I reblogged about a Good Thing which J. Michael Straczynski and the B-5 costume people did, and - about an hour later - it helped me finally reach an itch which I haven't been able to scratch for several days.

Long story short, @dduane and I are putting together a shopping list to send for some Continental goodies - nothing elaborate, just interesting hard-to-find pasta and that sort of thing - and one of the pastas was the source of that itch.

I'd been trying to remember its name so as to order some, but the name rattling through my mind was close, but wrong, so close that if I could just pin down where the wrong one came from, it would make room for the right one.

And it did.

The pasta name is "Pipe Rigate", which looks like this:

However, the name I was misremembering was "Paso Leati", which looks like this (on the right)...

...because it was Londo Mollari's "fighting name" as a member of the Couro Prido duelling society in the episode "Knives".

Ragù, garlic and Parmigiano Reggiano are not involved.

Sheesh.

My memory is so shit (stupid adhd 😡)

I just had one of my semi-daily "did I take my meds?!" moments and I had to try multiple ways to get my brain to spit out the answer.

I'm almost certain I haven't yet taken my morning dose, but only because the last time I remember the sensation of opening a pill bottle and feeling pills in my hand is from last night before bed.

Can I see the pills? No, but I can remember the touch of them in palm.

So, miles to km is 1.6, right? And the inverse of that is 0.6 or thereabouts, but I can't quickly do inverses in my head.

Okay, now what's the ratio for pounds to kg? I learned it as 2.2kg to the pound, not 0.45 pounds to kg.

Now on any given day, if you ask me to regurgitate one of those ratios, I am 90% likely to get it wrong. I'll quote you the other ratio or otherwise mix them up. Kilometers are bigger than miles, so 1 mile = 2.2 km, maybe? (No.)

But I can do Fibonacci in my sleep, maybe because I'm a programmer by trade. And because I'm trained as an engineer, estimation ratios like that are my bread-and-butter.

The other day I taught this trick to a friend of mine who's a graphic designer. She doesn't know the Fibonacci sequence by name, but she sure as hell does know the Golden Ratio. Never underestimate the utility of different ways of looking at a problem.

(My other favorite estimation ratio? To convert between Fahrenheit and Celsius, start with 20°C is 70°F and ±5°C is ±10°F. Is it perfect? No, but if you're trying to read a weather report and figure out how warm you're going to feel today, it's close enough.)

Fun little math trick I find really helpful: the ratio of a mile to a kilometer is within 1% of the Golden Ratio. That means that if you have a good memory for Fibonacci numbers (1 2 3 5 8 13 21 34 55 89) you can convert pretty accurately by taking consecutive Fibonacci numbers.

For example, 89 kilometers is really close to 55 miles (55.3). Or, say you need to convert 26 miles to kilometers: 26 can be written as 21 plus 5, so taking the next Fibonacci number up gives 34 and 8, meaning it should be around 42 kilometers. Sure enough, it's 41.8 km!

some golden guards + caleb

i wanted to take a break and do some character design of a few golden guards based off of some of the ones seen briefly in canon. i also drew hunter and caleb as references for faces and stuff. i tried to make them as similar as possible, but also looking very individual to one another. since belos claimed that hunter looks the most like caleb, i tried to stay true to that while keeping the other three looking similar but not quite as identical. anyways i love them <3 they’re like the most mentally ill family ever to me

these weren’t supposed to be real ocs or anything but then i ended up giving them names and backstories and so i wrote a little about them aaaand now im obsessed. i will try to make a full body ref for them, especially alistair and/or constance, if i have time

Do you think…at the end of Mockingjay when Haymitch and Katniss are in the President’s mansion and Haymitch spends all his time chasing Katniss down whenever she runs off to hide, but only in between getting super wasted himself and also being super mean to her…do you think sometimes he thinks he’s hallucinating Katniss? I am NOT making excuses for him, mind you, because “joking” that Katniss must be having boy troubles when she comes to him openly asking for his help has got to be Haymitch’s worst moment in the entire series imo.

HOWEVER… Haymitch has also been led to believe at least three or four times in the weeks since she was sent into the Capitol that Katniss is dead. And then when she DOES come back to him “alive” she’s so severely burnt and extremely traumatized beyond any consolation to the point of being unrecognizable. And Ma and Sid died in a fire. And District 12 was burnt to the ground. And everything Haymitch has ever loved has burnt away. Also, Haymitch is drinking again for the first time since the start of the war. I think it is wholly possible that in his least lucid moments he fully thinks the (real, alive) Katniss in front of him is another one of his personal ghosts. The ghosts who are mean to him and to whom he’s mean back in turn.

I sadly don't have the resources to answer all of these lovely knocks on my door, so it's time for Grandma Ozz to go. She will now disintegrate into an explosion of candies and belongings you wished for, then vanish into the void. A being of the néant.

I hope you all enjoyed your spooky holiday, kiddos. Although the horrors do persist on this blog, just in a less festive manner perhaps. If you want a healthy dose of haunting, just come for a visit.
