in the au with merman speedwagon and human jonathan i imagine jonathan carries speedwagon a lot, he just wants to be with his beloved jojo but it just takes him so much effort to move on land 😭 or maybe he pulls him around in a wagon which he learns to push on his own and "speedwagon" is more of an affectionate nickname jonathan gives him as he scoots around in the wagon 😂

Ngl, I feel like people underrate my man Speedwagon a lot in regards to physical strength, and I don't mean this as an offense or anything! I'm merely trying to get at something, so please bear with me.

Og!Speedwagon is strong. Probably way more than the average 180cm/5'11ish tall guy as it can be attested by the fact that, even with his arm and ribs broken as they were at the time (+ a punctured lung), Speedwagon was the one who carried completely on his own an unconscious Jonathan to the hospital after the fire (lets not forget that Jonathan weighs 105kg/232ish lbs). In addition to that, Spw also canonly obliterated zombies with his brute force alone using a sledgehammer (zombies are resilient af to the extent where regular humans are no match for them). Carrying his own weight shouldn't be much of an issue for him, I think.

I feel like, much like merman Jonathan in his version of the AU, merman Speedwagon would be able to move around on the land with relative ease (considering he's a sea creature, used to move underwater). However, Jonathan being Jonathan... he would still want to carry Speedwagon around as much as he can, and there would be a few reasons for that:

-Jonathan is a considerate man. So, even if Speebs doesn't struggle a lot moving around, he would still try to help him. In this AU, Jonathan has never been a merman, so he can only assume it must be difficult for a merperson outside of the water to move around the way Speedwagon does (Spw reassures him with full honesty countless times that he's okay and etc, and Jonathan can see it's true, but he also can't fully shake the thought off that maybe he just doesn't want to bother him during those times that he may be struggling for real)

-Strength aside, the scrapes and cuts and etc to a merman's tail from constantly brushing and grazing against the ground are a thing nonetheless, so that's another reason for Jonathan to want to keep Speedwagon from moving around the ground too much. Speedwagon probably doesn't mind the cuts and etc with how heavily scarred he already is (the "ehh, I'm already marred. what's one more scar added to the count anyways?" kind of thing), but of course, Jonathan does care and does worry about it, especially with the latent possibility of his cuts getting infected.

-Speedwagon using his arms to move around also mean he's unable to do things someone with his arms free would be able to. This one is not like A Priority, so to speak?? But it's definitely something Jonathan keeps in mind a lot, considering that he wants Speedwagon to experience this world as best and as comfortably as he possibly can.

-Last but not least: Jonathan enjoys carrying Speedwagon. He truly loves having him that close to him, and feel him in his arms, and experience things together, getting to see his reactions to new stuff, and so on. Jonathan has always given me the vibes that he loves physical contact a lot (I see him as the type of guy who loves to hug and cuddle/snuggle), so he would definitely take any and all chances he gets to hold and hug his merboyfriend. A bonus to that if homophobia is a thing in that universe: They can get openly physical like that and pass it off as "I'm only helping him around, nothing sus about it".

ALSOOOO, your idea about the little wagon and "Speedwagon" being mer!Speebs nickname is absolutely adorable!!!! I think it makes a lot of sense, too, since there's probably no wagons (not as we know them, at least?) underwater, so it's quite fitting, imo!

I'm gonna go for mer!jon because i had a mermaid phase when I was three and it has not gone away in the preceding 21 years i'm starting to think it might not be a phase after all (IM GONNA VISIT THE NEW MERMAID MUSEUM IN WASHINGTON THIS SUMMER AND IM SO FUCKING EXCITED!!!!!! anyway)

so I have a LOT of different ideas for mer!jon aus but I think some of them would be more befitting of a selkie or siren au (pointless hill i WILL die on: sirens and mermaids are wildly different things they dont even LOOK similar! Sirens have the head of a human with the body of a bird!!!) so uhhh here's my Thoughts on one potential au and yes I'm stealing the "human anthropologist" element from the little mermaid bc it uhhhh slaps

1. Jon can shapeshift into a human form at will and does so somewhat often

-his grandmother used to take him to the surface fairly often before she died, half as a kind of know thy enemy thing and half because she could drop him off at the library whenever he was being a nuisance, and also bc occasionally she wanted, like, a pastry

- jon's mer form has an absolutely MASSIVE tail- adult mers tend to be 13-20 feet long, and he's around 16 feet long himself. this makes it fun when his human form is about 5'2"

2.This shift is reversed if the mer in question is put into a large body of water. Rain or a shower won't have an effect (shout out to the tale of emily windsnap) but a bath or river or ocean will. This will be plot relevant later

3. Because I'm a huge sucker for the trope especially for comedic reasons there's definitely a "you saved my life now i owe you a lifedebt" thing that happens. So what happens is that Tim is out doing some water sport probably kayaking and ends up saving Jon from some threat. There's not ACTUALLY a life debt in Jon's culture, but turns out you can just LIE, and Jon wants an actual person to study, so he hauls his MASSIVE FISH BODY onto Tim's kayak and is like "hi i am obligated my the rules of mermaid law or whatever to live with you until I save YOUR life" and for a second Tim is like....uhhhh.... and then he's full "adult life is already so goddamn weird this might as well happen"

4. Cue wacky roommate shenanigans and also Tim bringing Jon to work and by bringing Jon to work I mean Jon refuses to stay home. He introduces him to his colleagues like "This is jon he's a researcher from...oxford.. and he'll be hanging out with us in the archives for..some length of time" and Jon leans over and whispers "hey where the fuck is an oxford". Sasha, current archivist, is also sercretly a mer and clocks him ON SIGHT and is like oh fuck he better not say anything. Jon thinks she is just a surprisingly relatable human. I love hijinkery

5. everything i touch in tma WILL be jonmartin, do not separate them, so the second Jon lays his eyes on Martin he's like tim tim tim tim tim tim WHO is THAT <3! and Tim's like "oh that's martin :)! he's cool" and then Jon is like hhh I'm gonna date him so hard and date him so hard he does. Martin, of course, does not know Jon is a mer, and Jon's like ohhh nooo what if he doesn't like me once he finds out im not human...

eventually all four of them are like on an outing and idk how but Tim like,,falls into a river and Jon automatically goes into save him fufilling the totally not made up "life debt" but his secret is out...luckily Martin's had a special interest in mermaids since he was like nine so he's like MERBOYFRIEND THIS IS THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE and then they have a lifelong and happy very infodump based romance together the end <3
