arthur 1x11 analysis
sort of
HERE to the other stuff i wrote about merlin
what i truly deeply love about merlin 1x11, the labyrinth of gedref is not merlin calling arthur out for killing the unicorn, or him telling gedref that he trusts arthur with his life, or merlin following arthur in the labyrinth against orders, or him being smart.
it's not even arthur wanting to sacrifice himself for the kingdom, or him taking the blame for what it's happening to his people and showing everyone that he will be a great, just king, or him not allowing merlin to drink poison in his place.
all these things are great, and beautiful, and they just say a lot about how great these two are, both as individuals and together, ready to sacrifice themselves for camelot and for each other.
no.
what truly gets me, what has my heart in a clench, what keeps me awake at night is this:
arthur saying that he is glad that merlin is with him.
Tumblr media
"I'm glad you're here, Merlin"
this is the part of the episode that most leaves me screaming and crying and sobbing.
because arthur, at this point, already knows he is going to drink the poison. he knows is he the one that will drink it, no matter what self sacrificing merlin has to say.
arthur here is not saying he is glad merlin is there because merlin is going to take his place and die for him. no, even if what he says just before may make someone think.
"I had no idea you were so keen to die for me."
"Trust me, I can hardly believe it myself."
this may make someone believe that arthur is glad that merlin wants to sacrifice himself for arthur (not that arthur will ever allow it).
but the truth is that arthur is glad that, since he will drink the poison and most likely die, he will at least be able to talk to merlin one last time. he is glad that merlin is there with him because he didnt want to die alone. he is glad merlin is there with him because merlin will be the last person he will see and the last person to see him.
and ultimately, he is glad that merlin is with him because merlin gives him the courage he need to do this.
arthur is brave enough. he is brave because he loves camelot and would die for his people, because he loves them.
but arthur is also brave because he loves merlin, be it friendship or something more, whatever suits you.
arthur is brave and merlin makes him feel brave as well.
and so, arthur is glad that merlin is with him.
he is glad that it's merlin the last person he may ever talk.
his first and true friend.
his loyal and brave servant.
his other half, even if he doesn't know it yet, but I'm sure he can feel it.
if arthur were to die, he is glad to do so with merlin by his side.
and the next thing that breaks me the most is that, whenever arthur has to face danger, he tells merlin to go away and save himself. and merlin always finds a way to tell him that no, he won't leave him. like in 2x13, the last dragonlord:
"Are you really going to face this dragon with me?"
"I'm not going to sit here and watch. I know it's hard for you to understand how I feel, but... well, I care a hell of a lot about that armour, I'm not going to let you mess it up."
which leaves arthur staring at merlin with undeniable affection.
Tumblr media
or in 3x12, the coming of arthur:
"Merlin, you should go with them."
"Nah, I've seen the woods already."
and i can go on and on about every time merlin refused to leave arthur's side, like any other servant may do, like even a normal friend could do. and every time, arthur looks at merlin with relief.
and i truly believe that, every time, arthur thinks: if i am to die today, I'm glad to die with you at my side.
he thinks, every time: I'm glad you're here, merlin

Gwaine does not seem to like magic much in the later seasons and happily hunts down sorcerers (dragoon, the guy from 5x05, finna) Thoughts on that?
I’ve answered similar questions before! Unfortunately, Tumblr’s search function doesn’t like me, or I’d link to my older analyses 😔
As early as 3x04 (Gwaine’s introductory episode!), Gwaine is implied to have some bias against magic. Not as severe as Arthur’s, but any bias can be dangerous. When Merlin goes to Gaius and Gwaine about the Stulorne blades, this is the reaction he gets:
Gwaine: I've seen those blades in action. They're forged using sorcery.
There’s quite a bit of emphasis on the word “sorcery” here, both in Gwaine’s speech and in the overall use/placement of it. The fact that the blades are forged using sorcery tells our protagonists why they’re capable of deceiving people’s eyes, but it does not in itself imply danger unless you see magic as a danger.
Later, in 3x08, Gwaine remarks on magic with a similar attitude:
Gwaine: Wyverns. Distant cousins of the dragon. They're creatures of magic, so be careful.
Again, Gwaine expresses their capacity for harm by bringing attention to their magical origins. But the worst is in 3x12, when Gwaine does nothing to stop Arthur from holding his sword against the throat of a child simply because he’s a Druid. Rather, Gwaine pulls his sword on the rest of the Druids when they come out to save the boy. It’s Merlin who has to tell Arthur to let him go. So, Gwaine not only sees magic as dangerous, but he believes that magic and innocence (not as in guilt, but as in youth and vulnerability) are mutually exclusive. He dangerously adultifies a kid who’s <10yo.
Thrice, in the introductory era of the character, pretty solidly confirms his perspective. However, Gwaine doesn’t seem to approach magic as an innate evil the way Arthur does. He more or less ignores Grettir, despite his flagrant use of magic to turn Gwaine’s sword into flowers. In season 5, he sees clearly that the Diamair is a creature of magic, but leaves with an understanding that he owes it his life.
Gwaine’s philosophy is openly stated in 3x04: “Nobility is defined by what you do, not by who you are.” If he’s to be true to this logic, then he has to accept that one’s actions/beliefs determine one’s character, rather than their birth circumstances. He has to apply this to magical people and creatures. And he seems to, in relation to Grettir and the Diamair.
Perhaps not so much to those he believe “chose” magic, for what he may assume is to the end of greed and power—some of the very traits he hates nobles for. However, there is only one instance to go off of, and it takes place in 5x05, where Gwaine’s like, 2 lines are the one that implies this, and the one telling someone to respect Arthur because he’s a king (even though Gwaine only respects Arthur despite that fact), so I’m inclined to ignore it.
As far as Dragoon goes, Gwaine seems to be under the impression that assassinating Uther would be evil, even though he has no motive for this. Uther had him banished and even threatened to cut his tongue out. I suppose he might just think that killing = evil, but considering how he’s employed to do just that—and it’s what he threatens Dragoon with—it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Perhaps because he sees sorcerers as a danger, he doesn’t disapprove of the magic ban, and therefore finds Uther’s death to be unjust?
They never really offer an explanation. I think the safest bet is that Gwaine assumes this means that Dragoon would want Arthur—who still holds the ban on magic in place—dead also. “Dragoon” actually plays into this idea.
It would be the same reason for the Finna situation. Arthur has already decided that she’s a threat, and Gwaine is receiving this information through his word alone. Gwaine’s exact quote is: “There’s a dangerous sorcerer at large,” who he wants to protect Merlin from. (It would be a very different story if Gwaine knew that Merlin was her accomplice—or rather, she is Merlin’s accomplice, heehee.)
So, while Gwaine doesn’t “happily” hunt down sorcerers—seriously, more like—he does show a bias against magic, believing it to be dangerous. However, he is also shown to overlook this bias from time to time, and I think it’s safe to say that he would have been able to make a repeat for Merlin if it came to it.

The dynamic between Morgana and Merlin/Gwen is so interesting in season 3/4/5.
Morgana enjoys the power play with them. The classism is strong with her. Merlin is a servant. Gwen is a servant. They aren't important or a threat. Well, for a while. That's why their dynamic is interesting.
Morgana doesn't start to see Gwen as a threat until she knows Gwen has a shot at ''her'' throne. She would rise above her in rank and she could not stand it.
In the episode 3x12 she allows Gwen to live not because she still care about her, but because she’s wants herself above Gwen. That’s how she sees her, a lowly servant that is beneath her rank. It was a great "fuck you" to her vision (Gwen on the throne). And that's why she enslaved her in season 5
Tumblr media
It’s a power move.
With Merlin, in season 3, she was not threatened by him knowing what she was up to precisely because she knew that nobody would believe him, especially Uther. She did try to kill him when he got in her way directly, but she never considered him important enough to actually scheme specifically against him. He was just a "stupid servant". Until she finds out that Merlin is Emrys.
Emrys is a threat. Emrys is worthy of being her mortal enemy. Emrys is the version of Merlin that can justifiably command her attention. In season 5 she doesn’t even call him Merlin anymore; she only addresses him as Emrys. Merlin is a servant and therefore of no interest.
After she drained Merlin of his powers, she was still scared of him
Tumblr media
Merlin the servant was literally dead to her.
