With recent advances in genetic sequencing and analysis, we now have a pretty good idea of how most modern vertebrate animals are related to each other. One of the biggest remaining mysteries in vertebrate evolution (and a major theme of my own research), however, is the relationships among the major groups of living birds.

There are some things that we all agree on about the bird family tree (which in some cases were already recognized before the rise of genetic studies), a big one being that modern birds can be divided into two major branches: Palaeognathae (ostriches, emus, and their close relatives) and Neognathae (all other living birds). Neognathae is in turn divided into Galloanserae (chickens, ducks, and their close relatives) and Neoaves (all remaining birds, which constitute 95% of living bird diversity).

Despite birds being one of the most intensely studied animal groups, however, essentially none of the large-scale genetic analyses that have been done on them so far have agreed with each other regarding how the major groups within Neoaves are related.

A new study by Stiller et al. (2024) might represent a big step forward in solving this mystery. Their results suggest that Neoaves can be divided into four major groups.

Mirandornithes: Flamingos and grebes. Stiller et al. found that all other members of Neoaves are probably more closely related to each other than to this group.

Columbaves: Consisting of two major subgroups, Otidimorphae (cuckoos, bustards, and turacos) and Columbimorphae (pigeons, sandgrouse, and mesites). Notably, Columbimorphae has been found by some earlier studies to be more closely related to Mirandornithes, but a second paper that was published on the same day by some of the same authors as Stiller et al. (2024) reported evidence that this previous result was probably caused by misleading similarities between the genetic sequences of Columbimorphae and Mirandornithes.

Elementaves: Consisting of Gruiformes (cranes and their close relatives), Charadriiformes (shorebirds), Strisores (hummingbirds, swifts, nightjars, and their close relatives), Phaethoquornithes (many waterbirds, including penguins, albatrosses, and herons), and the engimatic hoatzin. The exact relationships among these groups are still somewhat unclear; for example, Stiller et al. found the hoatzin to be most closely related to gruiforms and shorebirds (as had been suggested by an earlier study), but support for this result was not high. The hoatzin remains the single most difficult bird species to place in the bird family tree. The name Elementaves was newly coined by Stiller et al., referring to the fact that this group includes species specialized for life in the water, on the ground, and in the air (corresponding to the classical elements of water, earth, and air), as well as birds named after the sun ("fire"), such as the tropicbird genus Phaethon (Ancient Greek for "sun") and the sunbittern. This means that there is now a scientific basis for parodying Avatar: The Last Airbender using birds.

Telluraves: A big group consisting primarily of tree-dwelling birds, including songbirds, parrots, woodpeckers, kingfishers, and the various groups of birds of prey. An interesting result found by Stiller et al. is that owls are likely closely related to accipitrimorphs (hawks, eagles, vultures, etc.), which not all previous genetic studies had supported.

Stiller et al. (2024) provide further evidence for some bird relationships found by earlier analyses, but their results still doesn't exactly match those of any single previous study, so what makes this different from all those attempts that came before it? One is the amount of data. The genetic dataset analyzed by Stiller et al. was many times larger (both in terms of sequence length and the types of genes examined) than any study of this sort that had previously been done on birds. They also included over 360 bird species, which is more than what most previous studies had. Furthermore, they ran numerous tests to determine how the amount of data, number of species, and types of genes analyzed affected their findings, and in doing so were able to show that most of their results were relatively robust, or at least better supported than alternative hypotheses.

Another point of contention regarding the evolution of Neoaves is when the group originated. Were there already many neoavian lineages around during the Late Cretaceous, or did they mostly diversify following the mass extinction event that ended it? In the 2000s and early 2010s, studies trying to estimate the ages of bird groups based on rates of genetic evolution tended to find an older origin for Neoaves, but the majority of newer studies favor a younger origin, with most or all modern neoavian groups appearing after the Cretaceous (though one paper from earlier this year by a different team of authors advocated for older ages). Informed by recent studies on fossil birds, the results of Stiller et al. add further support for a more recent, mainly post-Cretaceous diversification of Neoaves (which I happen to think is more plausible than deep Cretaceous origins).

This almost certainly won't be the last word on these controversies by any means. However, at the moment I'm willing to tentatively consider Stiller et al. (2024) the closest we've gotten to approximating the true family tree of birds, and that is not a declaration I'd make lightly.

…Soooo…apparently they released TWO sneak peak clips for Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes & Huntsmen, Part Two and in watching them both, I noticed some things…

Although, the last movie ended on our heroes still being in Atlas Kingdom, judging the background of this room RWBY are in, they seem to be at Shade Academy in Vacuo this time!

For those who were speculating, this confirms that the timeline for the second half of the movie will take place shortly after RWBY (and Jaune’s) return from the Ever After in V9.

“Time dilation. Must be longer there than here.” “We’ve had some experience with that ourselves.”

Weiss’s comment to Flash time dilation . I don’t know whether or not that was a little callback to V3 when Weiss was with Winter and was gushing about her being close to learning time dilation (back when they were overloading her with new add-ons for her hereditary glyph semblance) or a nod to the end of V9 when the group returned to Remnant from the Ever After and time had fast forward a bit upon the group’s return?

Yang’s comments about Ruby being “driven” and “confident” since they got back. Got back from where? It has to be Ever After, right? That’s the only place that makes sense since it can’t be Atlas at all considering that Atlas is long gone.

Ruby’s arc from the events of the Ever After following her “re-awakening” isn’t as over or complete as the ending of V9 implied (and that some fans complained about given how much they built up her whole breakdown/ mystical suicide). Despite using the words “driven” and “confident” to describe Ruby’s new demeanour, you can definitely tell by Yang’s clear annoyance in the scene that what she truly means is that Ruby has become reckless since their return from the Ever After, seeming to throw herself into the fray of fighting the Grimm without any thought for her own well being anymore or even life beyond doing what she could to save Remnant.

Yang’s remark prompting Ruby about not caring about “the future” seems rather poignant. She says this while Ruby just acts all nonchalant about it. She just gives a rather dismissive response and continued to twiddle with her Scroll.

“...As long as we save Remnant, what else is there?”

What else…is there???

… Oookay, what in the fudge?

This feels SO WEIRD to hear Ruby Rose says especially if I’m correct about this taking place AFTER V9.

This is such a hand-wavy yet very depressing thing for Ruby to say. While she regained her confidence in herself from the Ever After, let’s address the clear elephant in the room that Ruby went from feeling overwhelmed by her situation to having a breakdown where she pushed away all of her friends and loved ones including one friend (Little) who was actively trying their best to help her to feeling like she wasn’t good enough to be the hero she wanted to become anymore to the point of stating outright that she didn’t want to be herself anymore to committing the equivalent of suicide to going through a whole ass rebirth scenario where she comes back as just herself, claiming that she was enough as she was to regaining her self confidence to… now becoming SO CONFIDENT AND DRIVEN that, according to her sister, she’s now reckless to the point of throwing herself into the lines of danger without any concern for her future cause according to Ruby…so long as she saves Remnant, there isn’t anything else for her to live for?

I mean she doesn’t word it like that exactly but the implication is definitely there. At least that’s how I interpreted it.

As always, I could be reading too deep into this or misreading the whole situation entirely. But regardless, I will say that I do oddly like this new Ruby.

I’m intrigued that we’re getting this little teaser of the Vacuo Arc and aftermath of the Ever After from the crossover movie in respect to Ruby’s side of the story. As a firm Little Red stan, this squiggle mesiter is always down to see some good ole character development for my favourite little red rose.

Hoooooooowever… at the same time, I’m also disappointed. Disappointed in the fact that we are getting this development in the crossover movie of all things.

What honestly would’ve been more compelling is if the RWBY movie was used to be the final chapter to RWBY as a whole. Similar to the Tales of Arcadia franchise which used their first and only movie to close off the entire series, three stories in the making (albeit rather disappointingly), it would’ve been cool if this movie was created to finally give RWBY the proper send off it needs, especially since we’re unsure of a renewal for V10.

But unfortunately…this isn’t the case here. This isn’t just a RWBY movie. It’s RWBY plus the Justice League and based on the trailers, the movie takes place in the JL universe for most of it in contrast to the first half of the film.

I dunno man. I like that they decided to tease a potential first look at V10 in the crossover movie. However at the same time…I wish they didn’t since; if the movie is hinting at a continuation of Ruby’s arc from the Ever After, I’m so mad that we’re getting it in a movie where outside of her core team, she won’t be sharing this new development with characters from her world and story i.e the rest of the hero team from Remnant.

As the teaser clips states, JNR are out for this movie. And there is a slight chance that Oscar may not be featured in this second part either.

So basically, the JL are probably gonna be the stand ins for JNOR and it wouldn’t surprise me if the only mature farm boi that Ruby will bond with/receive encouraging words of wisdom and guidance for this film will be Clark Kent/Superman.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, I do like Clark as a DC fan. It’s just that, again; he ain’t the super powered farm boy I wanted to see Ruby team up with for this movie.

This is just my way of saying it's things like this that makes me wish we got a RWBY centric film instead of it being a crossover.

I'm still gonna watch the second part when it's finally out (and I can find a site to watch it on) but still, y'know what I mean?

At least this makes me more invested in the second part of the crossover film cause I am curious where Ruby's story will kick off from here and will be left off for a potential V10 renewal.

Spirit would often be seen hanging around Maka and making attempts at getting her to give him a chance at being a good Dad but given how loud his attempts were people never realised that he had a younger son.

Most of the time it was because his son was very good at hiding himself, he was smart and kind, never stood out in a crowd but he didn’t share the families abilities in fighting, he was more suited to stealth missions or information gathering, he was a meister and his weapons were a set of throwing knives two twin brothers who were physically more imposing then he could ever hope to be.

The day you met the twins everyone was rushing around, you were a year younger than Maka but you were very rarely seen together when you were at school, you tried your hardest to be identified as a separate person to your sister but the only people that had succeeded with so far were the twins who stuck to you like glue. The upperclassman had an exam and most of them were cramming in some last minute studies before everything started, you were trying to weave your way through them when someone knocked you off your feet, Hunter one of the twins caught you setting you back on balance while Levi the other twin reached out, his hand latched onto the wrist the the guy who had just knocked you over “I didn’t hear an apology.” Levi said, his voice light, almost playful. “That’s because I didn’t give one.” The boy answered, trying to tug his arm away instead, Levi pulled him closer twisting his arm up behind his back. “I doubt that you are going to get what you want, little brother.” Hunter smiled as he stepped away from you to stand in front of the boy his brother was holding. “Guys I appreciate the help but this isn’t necessary.” You stepped forward and they both looked at you. “I don’t think that’s true, you know we’ve seen you around-” “You're nice to everyone, no one is nice to you, that’s not fair.” Hunter started the sentence and Levi finished it squeezing at the boy's arm, the boy who had bumped into you turned to look back at you and glared. “Get your freaks under control.” He ordered. “They don’t belong to me.” You informed him “I don’t even know him.” “He’s right!” Levi’s eyes widened as he threw the boy at his older brother and jogged over to you, Hunter caught the boy around the throat but before you could see anything else Levi took up a large portion of your field of vision, now the twins themselves weren’t very muscly but they were tall, taller than average, they would probably hit the 6 foot mark in the next few years but what really scared people was the disconnect between their actions and their personality, they were rarely aggressive with their words and there was always a smile on their faces. “I’m Levi and that’s my brother Hunter, we’re twin throwing knives and you're a meister right?” “Yeah my names-” “(Y/N) we know who you are.” He smiled. “Alright what is going on here?” You recognised your father's voice immediately although the playfulness that was usually directed at you was gone when he addressed others. “I think he was about to apologise to (Y/N) for knocking him off his feet right?” Hunter asked, his arm now looped around the boy's neck as if he were hugging him. “Sorry.” The boy muttered. “No problem.” You answered, Levi and his brother shared a look, Hunter let go of the boy and he scurried away. “You three, Lord Death wants to see you.” Your father said pointing at you and the twins. That was the day that you were paired together and they had never left your side since, even after finding out that you weren’t the best at fighting, even after you explained that they would probably never make it to the level of death scythes.

Levi snapped his fingers in front of your face as you blinked rapidly, focusing back on the present “did you hear me little mouse?” Levi asked. “Huh?” You asked. “Seems our miester is a little preoccupied.” Hunter smiled as he leaned forward on his elbow. “Hmm.” Levi hummed “something going on?” “They’ll call for us soon.” You mumbled and they both frowned. “What are you talking about?” Hunter asked. “They send us out when the others are busy and we all know that the others are busy.” You answered as your father walked into your homeroom and caught your eye gesturing for you to follow him. “Told you.” You mumbled.

Your father led you to Lord Death who briefed you on your mission and sent you on your way. The mission was supposed to be more simple then this but with the number of people here you couldn’t fight them all, you gritted your teeth “Hey little mouse maybe we should just go.” Levi suggested. “That’s probably the best option.” Hunter said, you wanted to argue with them but honestly there was no way that you were going to get out of this alive fighting them head on, so you turned and left the way that you came but when you were a safe distance from the house you were faced with your sister. “How many?” She asked, this was probably the first thing that she had said to you in a couple of days, with all the missions that she was on, you never really crossed paths anymore. “10 maybe 12” You answered. “Head back, we'll take it from here.” She said and you turned away from her as the twins appeared on either side of you and you headed back to the DWMA.

After that mission it was difficult to catch you outside of lessons these days, the only people that really saw you were the twins and that was only because you all lived together but it was your father who came looking for you. He had a key to your house so it was uncommon for him to be there but when he knocked on your door it still made you jump a little. “(Y/N) can I come in?” He asked. “Yeah.” You answered, you were sitting at your desk working through something and when the door opened you didn’t even look up. “What’s going on kid?” He asked as he closed the door behind him. “What? Nothing.” You answered. “Nice try kid… Something is going on?” He asked. “What does it matter? I’m no help out there anyway.” You mumbled. “What does that mean?” Your Dad walked over only stopping when you finally turned to him. “It means you should probably worry about Maka, she’s the one that’s going to save the world.” You informed him. “The world doesn’t need changing.” You could see that he wanted to laugh but thought better of it. “This has something to do with the last mission.” “Why do you bother sending me anywhere?” You asked. “I can’t fight, I can’t help anyone, I’m not worth the effort if you have to send my sister on clean up duty.” “That’s not what that was.” Your father said. “No then enlighten me, I watched her walk in there, she wasn’t even worried about the number, what did you send me for!? To compare, see who’s better, see who’s worth the training?” “Is that what you think?” He asked. “Have you ever thought that we sent you because you are the best stealth miester that we have you and we sent you because we knew that you could get in and out without anyone ever seeing you?” “I-” “You compare yourself to your sister too much and honestly, you are nothing alike, that doesn’t make you better or worse than the other, you are just different and when you work together you are dangerous.” He explained. “Now go out there and talk to your friends, they are worried about you, they feel what you feel so you should explain it to them.” He gently ruffled your hair as you batted him away. “Hey Dad.” You called as he walked towards the door, he looked back at you “Maka might not tell you this but you're pretty amazing you know that?” You asked. “Thanks kid.” He said before disappearing out of the room. You took a deep breath as you looked at the door where you could see the twins sitting in the living room, you knew that you should talk to them so you stood up ready to explain everything and get back to being you were before after all you apparently had a new skill to work on.
