“The truth is every queer person has right to come out on their own terms and on their own timeline. They also have the right to choose not to come out at all.
The forced conformity of the closet cannot be answered with the forced conformity in coming out.”
- Alex Claremont-Diaz, Red White and Royal Blue
Tumblr media
Those who participated in bullying this then eighteen year old child actor into coming out on social media, calling him a queer baiter because he played a bisexual character on a lgbtqia centered Netflix series really didn’t understand what that show was about.
This is a show about acceptance and love and just being yourself and showing that there are no social ideals that you have to conform to. You can be masculine and like guys. You can be feminine and like girls. This is a show about being confident and who you are but it’s also a show where they’ve made it clear that you only come out when you’re ready, and on your own terms.
It’s representation for so many people gay, lesbian, bi, trans, arocace… it’s showing that representation which is so important for so many people.
To those people who forced him out of the closet through constant bullying you’re not supporting the ideals of this show at all. You’re not being progressive by publicly harassing an actor who played a queer character because he’s seen with people of the opposite gender, so “he couldn’t possibly be queer himself”. You’re being a fucking asshole who couldn’t get it through their thick heads what this show was trying to get across to their audiences.
The term queerbaiting is being thrown around so loosely these days that even playing a queer character on show and not labeling yourself as such yourself is queerbaiting. Queer actors play cishet characters all the time. Are you going to bully them into announcing that they’re straight? I mean by your logic they have to be for playing that character or else it’s morally wrong.
Kit Connor played a bisexual sixteen year old who just realized he was such and had a whole identity crisis. He was scared and was worried that people close to him wouldn’t support him. His ‘friends’ are homophobic assholes and his brother is a bully. He’s scared that people he loves won’t accept him. He’s scared they won’t think of him the same way. When he tells his mother that he’s bi he gets that moment of relief when she hugs him tells him she’s sorry if she ever made him feel like he couldn’t tell her that. He’s relieved that she accepts him for who he is and that she doesn’t think of him differently than before she knew.
Kit Connor never got to have that moment with his mother because people who call themselves fans harassed him to the extent that he was forced to come out to social media before he was ready.
People need to just be more fucking aware.

What I really like about Heartstopper is that while it shows us that being queer is okay and wants to give us confidence, it also makes sure to let us know that we do not have to come out and shows how hard it can be. When Nick tells coach Singh none of the rugby boys know about him, she doesn't tell him they'll be fine with it, she tells him he doesn't owe them that information. And later, when he feels bad because he couldn't make himself tell them, Charlie says, "I think that there's this idea that when you're not straight, you have to tell your friends and family immediately, like you owe it to them. But you don't. Obviously, I want you to come out when and how you want to. And if that takes a long time, that is completely okay." And I think that if it never happens at all, that's fine too.

february finally answers, but how can you be sure it's not just an echo? the voice responds, copying and mocking your own words and pleads. if you're shouting back, february, you have to be louder than that.
the definition of love is so old-fashioned. in every language, i'll shout from the mountain tops how much i am in love with you, truly. if only people would know what i really meant by it. if only you really knew what i meant by it.
if you're shouting back, february, don't let it be dismissive. i am being clearer than i ever have been. you have to understand that i'm serious. i need you to understand.

Charlie, this is not your fault.
I don't care what David thinks anyway.
I mean, it was never gonna go perfect with everyone.
Coming out to my mum was amazing, but there are still awful people in the world, like my brother.
Like, you know, when you came out.
But I can handle it.
I promise.

Y’all felt so comfortable demanding Kit Connor label himself, speculating about his sexuality and harassed him so much that he had to out himself (clearly before he felt comfortable sharing that information publicly) just to get you all to shut up and leave him alone. I hope you all feel ashamed of yourselves tbh.

books i read this january:
1. 'station eleven' by emily st. john mandel
5/5 stars — literally so good, such a great start to the year. i loved the writing style and the story and the characters and i am forever grateful to the friend of a friend who kept telling me i should read this because he was totally right and it's so good. definitely recommend this if you like apocalyptic stuff that's more an exploration of humanity than action/thriller
2. 'ghosts: the button house archives' by mathew baynton, simon farnaby, martha howe-douglas, jim howick, laurence rickard and ben willbond
3/5 stars — everything i wanted from a ghosts book tbh, loved getting to hear more about the characters but i would've liked a bit more serious stuff about fanny (this isn't really a criticism just wish there had been because she's such a compelling character to me)
3. 'i am malala' by malala yousafzai
4/5 stars — really good for anyone unfamiliar with pakistani culture and politics to help explain recent history as well as being genuinely very interesting. definitely recommend
4. 'heartstopper: volume 5' by alice oseman
3/5 stars — cute and nice to read as a queer british teenager, i like alice oseman's art a lot and i liked how she approached the topics discussed in it. only 3 stars just because like it doesn't really speak to me personally not because it isn't good or anything
5. 'never let me go' by kazuo ishiguro
4/5 stars — i have a weird relationship with his writing i feel like with both the books i've read by him the endings have just been a bit lacking for me? but not for a reason i can actually define and i still really liked the rest of the book and i really like his writing style as well
6. 'yellowface' by rebecca f. kuang
4/5 stars — not my favourite work by her but i found it really interesting to read. idk it's been quite controversial and i don't think i know enough about the issues discussed in the book to have an opinion but it did make me think about a lot of things i'd never really considered before which was why i found it interesting
7. 'gideon the ninth' by tamsyn muir
5/5 stars — this book was right up my street; i absolutely love gideon and the way the book's written. gideon and harrowhark's relationship was really compelling and i love the concept. if you read this book (please do) i would recommend that you read the glossary before you start the book because i spent at least the first 50 pages with no idea what was going on but after that it was amazing
8. 'the seven husbands of evelyn hugo' by taylor jenkins reid
3/5 stars — kind of just not my thing, sorry to all my friends who love it (none of them are on tumblr lol). i thought it was interesting but it just wasn't really my taste
9. 'tsunami girl' by julian sedgwick and chie kutsuwada
4/5 stars — i definitely didn't expect to enjoy this as much as i did but i actually really liked it the whole way through. the characters were great and i found the romance subplot way more well-written and believable than i expected (this might just be me because i'm a bit weird about reading relationships as romantic in books so a lot of straight romance where they sort of just expect you to pick up on it as romantic purely because it's a boy and a girl comes across as really flat to me and i end up just deciding that they're only friends to me whereas in this book i actually did read their relationship as romantic and wanted them to go out)
10. 'nation' by terry pratchett
5/5 stars — i think this is the first terry pratchett i've read other than good omens and i really, really enjoyed it. it took me a while to get into but i liked the characters and also found the sort-of-romance in this believable which was cool. also just really interesting to be honest, i recommend this as well

just finished heartstopper and thinking about the bizarre take I saw on Ben being shitty writing because he’s portrayed as the villain…?? I see this season as a redemption arc for him. I think his writing was sympathetic — letting him have enough growth and letting us have enough insight into his character, whilst also being fair to Charlie and sending the important message that yes, people can change and be better but you’re not required to forgive them.
The ~villains~ this season aren’t fucking Ben lmao they’re Darcy’s mom and to a lesser extent Nick’s dad (and to an even lesser extent Nick’s brother).
