Things To Order at Mexican Restaurants You Never Know About
When you go to your favorite burrito shop, do you always get the same stale tacos or chimichangas (which, by the way, was probably originated in America) despite the fact that you adore Mexican food? Maybe you have been afraid to visit that very genuine restaurant down the block. Because you are concerned that you would not recognize anything on the menu. You would not need to worry about your next Mexican food fiesta after reading this tutorial on the top meals to sample in Mexican restaurants.

So many people are still talking about wanting to change their lives and I’m wondering whether I even need to. My life is pretty awesome. I’ve never lost a loved one suddenly or unexpectedly. I didn’t even lose a grandparent until I was 17. I’ve never been hospitalized. I’m in good physical shape with no major medical conditions. I’ve never been uncertain that I’d have my next meal or a roof over my head. I’ve never been unable to buy food or clothing or necessary supplies. I’ve never had a huge family issue with family members hating or not speaking to each other. I count my parents, my sister, my grandma, and my cousins among my best friends. I’ve never been hugely betrayed or cheated on or abused. I’ve never been a crime victim. I graduated from college and have an advanced degree.
I’ve been to over 30 countries, over 30 U.S. states, and 27 U.S. national parks. I’ve been to some of the most recognizable cities in the world, including Sydney, Tokyo, Beijing, Singapore, Paris, Rome, Prague, New York, Chicago, Seattle, Las Vegas, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Dubai, Madrid, Miami, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Venice, and Athens. I’ve watched the sunset from New Caledonia and Aruba and the middle of the Mediterranean. I’ve ziplined through the Costa Rican rainforest. I’ve walked over the border from Thailand to Myanmar. I’ve taken road trips in Europe where I’ve been to 4 countries in one day. I’ve hiked in Patagonia. I’ve dodged traffic in Hanoi. I’ve seen the sunrise over Ankar Wat. I’ve ice skated in the biggest mall in the world on my birthday. I’ve watched New Year’s fireworks in Brisbane, Queensland and Cusco, Peru. I’ve stopped for lunch in Lake Como. I’ve stood on the Great Wall of China. I’ve ridden a train through the Candian Rockies. I’ve been to the place I consider the world’s most beautiful - Glacier Point, Yosemite - 4 times. My family owns property in Florida and the Hamptons so I have a beach getaway about 10 times a year.
I have an apartment with my own washing machine and dishwasher. I have a job I can work remotely whenever I’m sick or otherwise need to be away from the office. I have coworkers I actually look forward to seeing. I have a cat who loves me. I live about 30 seconds away from a bakery, ice cream shop, Mexican restaurant, pizzeria, and bagel shop, and within walking distance of three grocery stores. It takes me about 4 minutes from my door to the train platform to get to work. I say this just to point out that my day-to-day life is almost absurdly easy.
Some people would look at my life and think there are still things missing from it; I don’t have my own house, I don’t have kids, I’m not married, I have very few friends who aren’t from work or family, I don’t have my own car, I don’t make six figures, I’m still just an “associate” without a prestigious job title or ranking within my firm. But I still have a lot that most people don’t. I need to remind myself of that at times, because sometimes I even feel unsatisfied. I never feel like I’ve learned enough; I’ve never read enough books or watched enough movies or practiced enough hobbies to please myself. I often feel happy doing activities alone, but sometimes I wish I had a close friend my own age to hang out with just once a week or so to make things more interesting. I live somewhere convenient, but there are trade-offs; it’s loud, there are too many lights obscuring the sky at night, it’s crowded, it’s not where I want to be forever. I haven’t even figured out whether I’m serious about doing some of the things I say I want to do; move to the West Coast, open my own law office or other business, conduct research and write articles, buy my own house where I can have chickens and a root cellar, climb mountains. Maybe I’m just too complacent a person deep down? I fear that. I’ve found that a decent life can be a trap; if things are good enough, you can start to genuinely wonder if it’s worth it to work any harder or take any more risks to make them better. Let this be a reminder that nobody’s perfect, I guess; I have a lot that’s enviable but I still don’t have all the answers.

16 August 2003 - nebula at the Foothill College observatory
Some weekend in August 2003, circa 16 / 17 August 2003
Hi everyone Since returning to the USA on 13th August 2003, I have found it no longer necessary to make multilingual summaries of my stories, at least not for now. At some stage they will return.
I wanted to let you know about a time that I drove my mother to Foothill College on a Saturday night, possibly 16th August 2003. My mother wanted in particular to see the new star as part of Nebula NGC 3603 and the new star called Chandra. There was a public viewing at the observatory in the northwestern part of the campus. It is closer to the softball field than it is to the football stadium, practically on the opposite side of campus. Foothill College is a community college located in Los Altos Hills, off El Monte Road, Moody Road and I-280.
I came over on the Saturday evening from my then-apartment in Foster City, with a hamper full of dirty laundry. My parents allowed me to wash my laundry for free, and they also donated the detergent. At the time, only my mother was at the house, as well as our pet cat Eric. Other family members were away on their own personal business. I think that night, my mother asked me to stop by the Pollo Loco Mexican restaurant, on Grant Road just a little south of El Camino Real, in Mountain View, CA, to pick up a couple of burritos, beans, rice, guacamole, sauce and sour cream. I brought those home. This was a time, when I liked to have the hot sauce, so I had to bring mild sauce for my mother. I washed my laundry, we ate our burritos and after I put the washed laundry into the dryer, we had left in my Jetta, the car I had at the time, for Foothill College.
The way to the college was fairly straightforward. We would drive along Foothill Expressway to El Monte Road and turn towards I-280. I drove under the I-280 interchange, and went into the first entrance past the stadium. The campus has a one way roundabout ring. The best parking lots would be the ones in the northwesternmost section, namely 3 and 4. Foothill College is hilly, and some places may have an incline/decline. I found a good spot in lot 3.
We walked up to the observatory next to Lot 3. I think there were about 50, 60, 70 people in front of us. The line went a bit slowly, and it probably took an hour before we had our turn. At least it was not quite as long as it is to cross from Tijuana, BC, Mexico, into San Ysidro, California, USA. When it was our turn to see, we took about a minute to notice the supernova in Nebula NGC 3603. I was able to spot Chandra. It was really neat.
When we left, there had to be about 100 people waiting their turn. We went back to the car, drove home, I picked up my newly dried laundry, and drove home along CA-85 and US-101. Traffic was light at the time, so the drive to Foster City did not take too long, average speed was about 65 mph or 104 km/h.
Anyway, this more or less concludes the Summer 2003 vacation. Hope you have enjoyed it.
The next adventure will be in the Hong Kong and Macau S.A.R., as well as a layover in Tokyo Narita. Hope you will join me then.

15 Best Restaurants That Have Vegan Options (in the world)
Tumblr media
Veganism is a lifestyle choice that eliminates animal products from one’s diet and lifestyle. This includes all animal-derived foods such as eggs, dairy, honey, and gelatin, as well as clothing and personal care products that are made from animal products or tested on animals.
People often choose vegan restaurants for ethical and environmental reasons. Eating vegan reduces the demand for animal products, which in turn reduces the number of animals raised and slaughtered for food. Additionally, veganism is an environmentally friendly choice as plant-based diets require fewer resources to produce than animal-based diets.
Eating at vegan restaurants can also be beneficial for your health. Eating plant-based meals regularly can help you get the nutrients you need without the cholesterol and saturated fat found in animal products. Additionally, vegan meals tend to be lower in calories than animal-based meals, making them a great choice for those looking to lose weight.
Some of the most popular vegan restaurants around the world include By Chloe in New York City, Veggie Grill in Los Angeles, and Mana Food Bar in Chicago.
Additionally, in Europe, popular vegan restaurants include Cloud Cakes in London and Green Rabbit in Paris.
In Asia, popular vegan restaurants include VeganBurg in Singapore and Loving Hut in Taiwan.
In South America, popular vegan restaurants include Vegans of Buenos Aires in Argentina and Vegarte in Peru.
Lastly, in Australia, popular vegan restaurants include Vegie Bar in Melbourne and Gigi Pizzeria in Sydney.
Asia is home to many vegan restaurants, from small local spots to large chains. Some of the most popular vegan restaurants in Asia include Loving Hut in Taiwan, VeganBurg in Singapore, and Veg Out in Hong Kong. Additionally, popular vegan restaurants in Asia include Souley Vegan in Japan, Loving Hut in Thailand, and Fauna in India.
South America is home to many vegan restaurants, from small local spots to large chains. Some of the most popular vegan restaurants in South America include Vegans of Buenos Aires in Argentina, Vegarte in Peru, and Greenbox in Brazil. Additionally, popular vegan restaurants in South America include Nirvana in Chile, La Yuca in Colombia, and Amor Vegetal in Venezuela.
Africa is home to many vegan restaurants, from small local spots to large chains. Some of the most popular vegan restaurants in Africa include Plant Junkies in Johannesburg, The Living Food Kitchen in Cape Town, and Revolution Kitchen in Cairo. Additionally, popular vegan restaurants in Africa include Soul Green in Lagos, The Black Herbivore in Dakar, and The Vegan Table in Nairobi.
The surge in veganism has reached incredible heights, from the renowned Michelin Star restaurant in New York City going completely plant-based to Burger King’s vegan franchises. Businesses have picked up on this trend and the potential it holds, and we are all for it! A survey from Cornell University reports that one out of every 10 Americans do not consume meat. However, vegan restaurants are not only for vegans and vegetarians. For all the food-lovers and globetrotters, we’ve compiled a list of the top vegan eateries around the globe. The quality of their dishes is remarkable, even surpassing that of Foie Gras and caviar.
The restaurant KLE traces its roots back to the German Sauerklee, a plant with a long history. Local ingredients are used to make mouth-watering dishes, and the Spanish-born chef Zineb Hattab adds her own twist by combining Moroccan and Mexican flavours.
KLE is not only a one Michelin Star restaurant, but has also been awarded the prestigious Michelin Green Star for their commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly practices, such as not serving animal products and using organic produce.
Everyone can enjoy the amazing quality and flavour of their vegan-friendly dishes, complemented by a 100% vegan wine list. In a relaxed and intimate atmosphere, visitors can savour dishes such as Panna pistachio ravioli and violet and orange blossom meringue for dessert.
Joia has been at the forefront of plant-based dining since its inception in 1989, with 80% of its menu now being vegan. In 1996, it was the first vegetarian European restaurant to be honoured with a Michelin Star and recently won a Michelin Green Star.
Chef Pietro Leemann creates dishes through a careful process of experimentation and exploration, while opting to leave out all meat and restrict animal products such as dairy and eggs to a maximum of 20% of his recipes.
The restaurant also puts a strong emphasis on eco-friendliness and sustainability, with customer health being a priority. Joia avoids using heavily processed items, such as gluten and sugar, in its dishes.
It’s no surprise that Vegan Beat is so highly-rated by both locals and travelers! With a Tripadvisor Travelers Choice Award for 2022 and top ratings from Happy Cow and Google, this vegan street food restaurant offers a unique fusion of Mediterranean and cross-cultural cuisine.
Their signature side dish – spiralized potatoes with beet sauce – is the talk of the town, and the menu also features mouthwatering options like sweet potato burgers and mushroom gyros.
Prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is casual, so vegans and meat-eaters alike come back to Vegan Beat again and again!
Reading reviews of vegan restaurants is a great way to get an idea of what to expect before you visit. You can read reviews on sites such as Yelp and Google, or you can read reviews on vegan restaurant review sites such as HappyCow. Additionally, you can ask your friends and family for their opinion on vegan restaurants they have visited.
If you’re looking for resources to help you learn how to cook vegan-friendly food, there are plenty of options. You can find vegan cookbooks, vegan cooking classes, and vegan cooking websites that offer recipes, tips, and advice. Additionally, you can find vegan-friendly meal delivery services that offer pre-made vegan meals.

When I was a small boy, we’d eat out once a year, always at the Berni Inn in Doncaster. The choices were not extensive. To start, it was either grapefruit juice or pineapple juice, and then it was breaded plaice or steak. Mind you, customers were able to choose how they’d like their meat cooked. For an hour. Or for much, much longer. The vegetables, meanwhile, went into the pot when you booked the table.
I knew this was wrong, even when I was only six, because my dad was a fanatical cook. He would cook for people all day. He cooked for the postman. He cooked for the women who worked for my mum in the barn at the bottom of the garden. And when he ran out of people to cook for, he’d make elaborate cakes for the birds.
Tumblr media
He would rise at six so he could start cooking and I still yearn for some of the things he made. Tripe in a simple milk sauce, especially. And his roasted heart was one of the cornerstones of my childhood. Alongside Mungo Jerry, being bullied and the hedgehog-print jeans my mum made for me because Levi’s were too expensive. And which were the root cause of much of the bullying.
Later, in my teens, he would take me to London occasionally, and we’d go to a restaurant at 235 King’s Road, which was called 235 King’s Road. Or an Italian place on the Earls Court Road called Il Palio, where Bruno the owner and his chef would have furious rows all night long. And then at lunchtime, he’d take me to a place he knew in Marylebone for a salt beef sandwich.
Later, as my mum’s business started to become more successful, we’d go to San Lorenzo in Beauchamp Place and Odin’s, which belonged to Peter Langan. And I didn’t like the food they cooked because it wasn’t plain. It wasn’t simple. It wasn’t tripe in a milk sauce. It wasn’t roast heart.
Much later, AA Gill did his best to make me understand food and cooking. He would take me to places where the rabbit tasted like bacon and the pigeon like ham, and he would swoon and kiss the chef on the mouth. And I’d stare wistfully at my pigeon, thinking, “If I’d wanted something that tasted like ham, I’d have ordered ham.”
This is why I despise all provincial restaurants today. And please don’t write to tell me about a place your daughter-in-law has just opened in Penrith, because I won’t like that either. In restaurants outside London, it’s always about the chef’s ability to create a visual taste sensation. No one’s allowed to talk. You are expected to sit there in reverential silence, marvelling at how the single piece of cress is a perfect accompaniment for the bubbles in the broth.
And it’s bollocks. When I go out to eat, it’s because I can’t be arsed to do the washing-up. I want exactly what I’d make at home, only without the faff of making it. Shepherd’s pie. Spaghetti bolognaise. Lamb chops with new potatoes. And no effing sauce. I also don’t want a new concept, where I order 876 little things and then share them all with the people on the table by the loo. Or plates made from wood, or metal. I swear to God, restaurants that do this always provide cutlery that you can’t hold properly, so you can’t stab the waiter.
Tumblr media
What a whopper: Clarkson lovingly cradles a marrow grown in the new kitchen garden at his 1,000-acre farm in Oxfordshire
What I hate most of all, though, is travelling with film crews. Because when we are abroad, they treat food as fuel. Which means we never walk the streets looking for the sort of restaurant that does home cooking well. They just eat whatever is provided at the hotel, which is almost always like the sort of food you get in Birmingham.
Nicola Formby — aka the Blonde made famous by AA Gill’s reviews — is always suggesting little places in back streets that do great gnocchi on a bed of lightly killed rattlesnake, but I don’t want that. I want simple. I had roast grasshoppers in Cambodia and Burma and they were terrific. I had a trout, plucked from the stream next to my table in Croatia, and then grilled. And that was even better. But the absolute best food I’ve ever eaten was a bruschetta in Bologna. Bread. Olive oil. Tomatoes. Basil, probably, and maybe some balsamic vinegar. I can’t be sure because after smoking half a million cigarettes, my taste buds have the sensitivity of steel. All I knew is they were really good tomatoes on a really nice piece of bread.I can add another couple of things to this list of culinary triumphs. The chicken pho by a chef called Ms No at the Six Senses Con Dao island resort off Vietnam. And the Denny’s breakfast experience in any of those Reacher towns in the red bits of America. If you break a perfectly poached egg, and in Denny’s the poached eggs are always perfect, onto their hash browns, I swear you end up with a taste sensation that would stop Jesus in his tracks. I have searched the world for hash browns made the Denny’s way, but when they’re offered, the chef has always suffused them with his own twist. By which I mean “ruined them”.
I have a similar global quest to find a better eggs benedict than the one I was given at the then Regent Hotel in Hong Kong, back in 1988. So far, it’s no dice. No one gets the simplicity right. Simplicity is always the key to my enjoyment of food. It’s why, when I cook, I never use cheese unless what I’m making is cheese on toast or a cheese sandwich. This is because cheese is a powerful flavour that sits in the pan like the Russian president sits in a room full of diplomats from former Soviet states. It’s the same story with bacon. Pop that into the mix and what you always end up with is something that tastes of bacon.
“Are you not getting the delicate hints of pomegranate?”
“Nope. Just bacon.”
Tumblr media
All of which takes me back to my dad’s roast heart. I sometimes look online for how this might be made and what I get is “roasted ox heart stuffed with a mushroom duxelle” or “beef heart braised in wine” or “lamb’s heart stuffed with lemon thyme and streaky bacon”. No. And then no again.
And nor can you serve them with a Dover sole so you have the chance for a jokey “Heart and Sole” offering in the menu. I just want heart. I like the taste of it as it is. I like the texture and all I want added is a spoonful of mashed potato to mop up the blood.
I’ve just started an internet thing called FoodTribe, on which people can share thoughts and ideas on food. And I’m going to be sharing this quest for simplicity a lot. I may even go further and start turning the stuff I grow on my farm into straightforward food that I can sell in my simple, straightforward, unheated shop.
As I write, I have three sheep that are due to go “down the road”. I feel sad in some ways, but I’m cheered by the fact that I can have their hearts. And even more cheered by the fact that I’ve accidentally grown 20 tons of potatoes. It’s going to be a supper that makes me feel young again and it will be the first I’ve grown entirely by myself.
Yes. I started a kitchen garden earlier this year and have spent the past few months taking a weird pride that the spring onions, and the carrots and the peas and especially the golden beets, all of which were grown by my own . . . ability to tell girlfriend, Lisa, and gardener, Josh, exactly what I like.I don’t know why we enjoy eating vegetables that we’ve grown ourselves more than those grown by some disinterested Mexican on minimum wage. Maybe it’s because we know we haven’t urinated on them. Or because we know that no carbon was burnt in their trip from the soil to our table. But whatever the reason, we do. And I cannot wait to do that with meat as well. It’s simplicity in its purest form.
Jeremy’s recipes will be added to the next post to avoid this one turning into an enormous monster

Most expensive cities (CNBC) Zurich and Paris have displaced Singapore and Osaka in a recent report on the world’s most expensive cities. The two Asian cities previously joined Hong Kong at the top of the rankings. That’s based on The Economist Intelligence Unit’s latest Worldwide Cost of Living index which shows how the coronavirus pandemic has affected the prices of goods and services in more than 130 cities as of September 2020. According to the report, Zurich and Paris’ jump to first place was due to the strengthening of the Swiss franc and the euro. “The Covid-19 pandemic has caused the weakening of the U.S. dollar while western European and north Asian currencies have strengthened against it, which in turn has shifted prices for goods and services,” said Upasana Dutt, head of Worldwide Cost of Living at The EIU. New York City is used as the base city in the index. The top ten: Zurich, Paris, Hong Kong, Singapore, Tel Aviv, Osaka, Geneva, New York, Copenhagen, Los Angeles.
U.S., Canada, Mexico to extend border restrictions until late December (AP) U.S. land borders with Canada and Mexico are expected to remain closed to non-essential travel until Dec. 21 at the earliest amid a rising number of U.S. coronavirus cases, officials in Washington and Ottawa told Reuters on Wednesday. Mexico’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the decision later on Wednesday in a post on Twitter. The restrictions were first put in place in March to control the spread of the virus and have been extended on a monthly basis ever since. In Ottawa, a Canadian government source said the travel restrictions in place at the Canada-U.S. land border would remain in effect for at least another month.
Recession With a Difference: Women Face Special Burden (NYT) For millions of working women, the coronavirus pandemic has delivered a rare and ruinous one-two-three punch. First, the parts of the economy that were smacked hardest and earliest by job losses were ones where women dominate—restaurants, retail businesses and health care. Then a second wave began taking out local and state government jobs, another area where women outnumber men. The third blow has, for many, been the knockout: the closing of child care centers and the shift to remote schooling. That has saddled working mothers, much more than fathers, with overwhelming household responsibilities. “We’ve never seen this before,” said Betsey Stevenson, a professor of economics and public policy at the University of Michigan and the mother of a second grader and a sixth grader. Recessions usually start by gutting the manufacturing and construction industries, where men hold most of the jobs, she said. The triple punch is not just pushing women out of jobs they held, but also preventing many from seeking new ones.
U.S. to Drop Case Against Mexican Ex-Official to Allow Inquiry in Mexico (NYT) The Justice Department has asked a federal judge to drop drug trafficking and corruption charges against a former Mexican defense minister to allow Mexican officials to investigate him, Attorney General William P. Barr announced Tuesday in an abrupt reversal a month after the official was arrested in Los Angeles. The official, Gen. Salvador Cienfuegos Zepeda, had been Mexico’s defense minister from 2012 to 2018 and was accused of taking bribes in exchange for protecting cartel leaders. But Mr. Barr and Mexico’s attorney general, Alejandro Gertz Manero, stopped short in a statement of promising any charges in Mexico. In a court filing, prosecutors acknowledged that the Trump administration had determined that preserving its relationship with Mexico prevailed over pursuing the case. “The United States has determined that sensitive and important foreign policy considerations outweigh the government’s interest in pursuing the prosecution of the defendant, under the totality of the circumstances, and therefore require dismissal of the case,” they wrote in asking a judge to dismiss the charges.
Biden’s DIY transition proceeds without Trump assistance (AP) President Donald Trump’s refusal to cooperate with his successor is forcing President-elect Joe Biden to seek unusual workarounds to prepare for the exploding public health threat and evolving national security challenges he will inherit in just nine weeks. Blocked from the official intelligence briefing traditionally afforded to incoming presidents, Biden gathered virtually on Tuesday with a collection of intelligence, defense and diplomatic experts. And as the worst pandemic in a century bears down on the U.S. with renewed ferocity, the current administration is blocking Biden from collaborating with its response team. Biden’s representatives instead plan to meet directly with pharmaceutical companies this week to determine how best to distribute at least two promising vaccines to hundreds of millions of Americans, the biggest logistical challenge to face a new president in generations. The moves reflect how Biden is adjusting to a historically tense transition. With no sign that Trump is prepared to facilitate soon a peaceful transfer of power, Biden and his team are instead working through a series of backup options to do the best they can to prepare for the challenges he will face as soon as he takes office in January.
When Trump Goes, Can the Democrats Hold It Together? (NYT) The Democratic Party is struggling with internal contradictions, as its mixed performance on Election Day makes clear. Analysts and insiders are already talking—sometimes in apocalyptic terms—about how hard it will be for Joe Biden to hold together the coalition that elected him as the 46th president. The intraparty dispute burst out full force on Nov. 5 during a three-hour House Democratic Caucus telephone meeting. Moderates angrily lashed out at liberals, accusing them of allowing divisive rhetoric such as “defund the police” and calls for socialism to go largely unchallenged. Those on the left pushed right back, accusing centrists of seeking to downgrade the demands of minorities, including those voiced at Black Lives Matter protests. Abigail Spanberger, who represents the 7th Congressional District in Virginia—which runs from the suburbs of Richmond through the exurban and rural counties in the center of the state—voiced her instantly famous critique of the liberal wing of her party during the phone call: “We have to be pretty clear about the fact that Tuesday—Nov. 3—from a congressional standpoint, was a failure,” she told her Democratic colleagues. “The number one concern that people brought to me” during the campaign “was defunding the police.” And “We need to not ever use the words ‘socialist’ or ‘socialism’ ever again because while people think it doesn’t matter, it does matter. And we lost good members because of that.” Representative Rashida Tlaib, whose Michigan district is among the poorest in the country, and who is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America—directly countered Spanberger and other moderates: “To be real, it sounds like you are saying stop pushing for what Black folks want.” Other Democrats who describe themselves as democratic socialists, including the former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, have become a substantial Democratic constituency.
Pandemic media syndrome? (Scientific American) According to Claudia Wallis, of Scientific American, recent studies have shown that the pandemic’s toll on mental health has been even worse than experts expected, especially among young adults. Roxane Cohen Silver, a psychologist at the University of California, Irvine, found that “increased engagement with media coverage of the outbreak” is a major driver of anxiety among people of all ages. “If people are engaged with a great deal of media, they are more likely to exhibit and report distress, but that distress seems to draw them further into the media,” Silver says. “It’s a cyclical pattern from which it is difficult to extricate oneself.”
Sweden’s coronavirus strategy (Washington Post) Even Sweden appears to be abandoning the Swedish model. On Monday, the country’s authorities banned gatherings of more than eight people as they grappled with the second coronavirus wave surging through much of Europe. The new restrictions followed other protocols coming into effect this week, including protective measures around nursing homes and bans on alcohol sales at restaurants and bars after 10 p.m. The shift in tone is noteworthy given Sweden’s notorious light-touch approach to the pandemic. “It is a clear and sharp signal to every person in our country as to what applies in the future,” Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said during a news conference Monday. “Don’t go to the gym, don’t go the library, don’t have dinner out, don’t have parties—cancel!” Hospitalizations are rising faster in Sweden than any other European country, and Sweden’s per capita death rate is several times higher than those of its Nordic neighbors Finland, Denmark and Norway.
Amid pandemic, Belgrade street kids find comfort at refuge (AP) In a small, brightly-colored backstreet house in Belgrade a teenage girl is drying her hair, while two others eat lunch in the kitchen. A group of boys are having their temperatures checked at the entrance as a precaution against coronavirus. It’s another busy day for Svratiste, or Roadhouse, Belgrade’s first daily drop-in center for street kids that for years has been a rare oasis of warmth and comfort for the Serbian capital’s most vulnerable inhabitants. Since opening in 2007, Svratiste has welcomed hundreds of children—some as young as five—who have come here to warm up, wash or eat. With social isolation growing and the economic situation worsening in the pandemic, the center’s role has become even more significant. Apart from providing food and clothes, the Svratiste team has also sought to help the children socialize and get to know their town by visiting playgrounds, cinemas and theaters. A key effort has been to include them in the education system and make sure they stay. During the pandemic, the center helped with online classes that most children have no means of following. One of their success stories has been Bosko Markovic, now 18, who first came to Svratiste five years ago. With the center’s help, Markovic has finished high school and now has his eyes set on becoming a policeman, he told the Associated Press. “They (Svratiste) have made me a better person,” he said proudly.
Pompeo To Visit Israeli West Bank Settlements During Farewell Tour (Foreign Policy) U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in Israel today as he continues his whistle-stop tour of U.S. allies. Before he heads to the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia, he is planning on making history. Pompeo will visit two Israeli settlements both considered in violation of international law, one in the Golan Heights and one in the West Bank. By doing so, he becomes the first U.S. Secretary of State to visit either site. His de facto endorsement of the Israeli occupation stands in contrast to the outgoing Obama administration’s moves in 2016, allowing passage of a United Nations Security Council resolution declaring Israeli settlements on Palestinian territory illegal by abstaining from (rather than vetoing) the vote. His visit also comes as Israel plans to expand a settlement in East Jerusalem, despite outcry from the United Nations and European Union.
Reassured by Biden Win, Palestinians Will Resume Cooperation With Israel (NYT) The Palestinian Authority said Tuesday that it was resuming its cooperation with Israel, ending six months of financial hardship for tens of thousands of West Bank residents and signaling relief over the election of Joseph R. Biden Jr. It was one of the first clear signs that anticipation of a new administration in Washington is having an effect on international relations. The Palestinian announcement undid a set of stringent measures imposed by Mahmoud Abbas, the authority’s president, in May in a desperate protest against plans by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel to unilaterally annex large portions of the occupied West Bank. The Trump administration had indicated it would support some form of annexation, which would have imposed Israeli sovereignty over land that the Palestinians have counted on for a future state. Mr. Abbas cut off security coordination with Israel, raising fears that attacks might go unprevented. He also severed civilian ties, including those that help Palestinians travel into Israel for work or medical treatment. Most painful of all to his own people, Mr. Abbas stopped accepting routine transfers of more than $100 million a month in taxes that Israel collects on the Palestinians’ behalf, funds that account for more than 60 percent of the authority’s budget. The lack of funds forced salary cuts for tens of thousands of public-sector employees, compounding what was already a devastating economic crisis because of the pandemic. “Praise God, I feel so relieved,” Rami Kitaneh, 35, a nurse at the Hugo Chavez Ophthalmic Hospital in the central West Bank, said Tuesday night. “I gave up so much since the start of the crisis, but now I can breathe.”
Security officials worry Israel and Saudi Arabia may see the end of Trump as their last chance to go to war with Iran (Business Insider) European intelligence officials are alarmed about the possibility of military action towards Iran in the waning days of the Trump administration. Concern that Trump—who has pushed for maximum pressure on Iran—or a combination of Israel or Saudi Arabia creating a military confrontation in the waning days of the administration has been a concern for over a week, according to three European intelligence officials who spoke with Insider. The news that last week the president requested a list of military options from his military and diplomatic advisors has sent these concerns into overdrive. One fear is of unilateral action by the US to force a military clash that might make it impossible for the incoming Biden administration to return to the 2015 joint nuclear agreement that traded sanctions relief on Iran for an end to its nuclear weapon programs, all three officials said. They declined to speak on the record in exchange for their candid views on the situation.
People go hungry in Ethiopia’s Tigray as conflict marches on (AP) People are going hungry in Ethiopia’s rebellious northern Tigray region as roads are blocked, airports are closed and the federal government marches on its capital in a final push to win a two-week war. “At this stage there is simply very little left, even if you have money,” according to an internal assessment by one humanitarian group, seen by The Associated Press. The assessment, based on a colleague who managed to get out, said people “will stay where they are, there is no place in Tigray where the situation is any different and they cannot cross over into the other regions of Ethiopia because of fear of what would be done to them.” For more than a week, the United Nations and other aid organizations have been warning of disaster. Long lines formed outside shops within days of the Nov. 4 announcement by Ethiopia’s Nobel Peace Prize-winning Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed that a military offensive had begun in response to an attack by Tigray regional forces on a military base. Trucks laden with food, fuel and medical supplies have been stuck outside the region’s borders. Banks in Tigray were closed for days, cutting off humanitarian cash transfers to some 1 million people. And even before the fighting, a locust outbreak had been destroying crops. Over 27,000 Ethiopians have fled into neighboring Sudan, burdening villages that have been praised for their generosity, though they have little to give.

Maybe this is just an American thing, but I find the idea that Chinese cultural exports are unpopular confusing when there’s multiple Chinese restaurants in pretty much every city in the entire country. It’s easily one of the most popular restaurant genres in the country, much easier to find than almost any other foreign cuisine (With the exception of Mexican food).
And of course all the famous Chinatowns, martial arts, Chinese New Year celebrations, and, again, if you count Hong Kong as part of China you get some incredibly popular and influential film-making.
I guess I just don’t know how much more you guys want.

“Kay! I’m heading out!” Tori shouted as she hurried to the door.
Jackson had texted her to let her know that they had pulled up in a taxi, waiting to pick her up. She didn’t get to hang out with them much outside of promotions, so she was really excited.
“Don’t stay out too late!” Chan called.
“Call me if you need anything!” Hyunjin shouted from the kitchen.
She agreed and dashed out the door. She paused on the ground floor of the building, taking a moment to look at herself in the mirror. She was wearing one of her favourite outfits; a jean skirt and a black cold-shoulder top. Her shoes were just scrappy sandals, and she wasn’t bringing a jacket because it was supposed to be warm anyways.
The taxi was waiting just out front, and she quickly walked up. The door closest to her was kicked open, and she sat down as Jackson slid over to make room for her.
“How goes it...little Stray?” Jackson asked, giving her a side hug and squirming so she could do up her seat belt.
“It goes good.” She joked back. “It’s great to see you guys. Hi Marky.” She reached around and patted him on the shoulder.
“Hey, Tor. What do you want to do today?”
Ever since Tori had joined Stray Kids, GOT7 had kind of taken them under their wing. Jackson, BamBam and Mark were especially close with the foreign line, and they all loved to spend time together.
“I dunno.” The taxi pulled away and headed out to the street. “I assumed you guys had made plans.”
“We invited you out. Why should we make the plans?” Jackson asked.
“Because you invited me out.” She wrinkled her nose at him. “What about Mexican food? There’s a new restaurant in Gangnam that is supposedly amazing. Some top chef is cooking there.”
“Mmmm...sound good!” Mark cheered. “I vote for that.”
Jackson agreed, so Tori googled the address and gave it to the driver. Then she quickly phoned the restaurant and asked what their seating arrangement was. They were incredibly helpful, and offered them a private room. Tori thanked them and they were on their way.
“How’ve you been, Tori?” Mark asked as they drove.
“Oh, you know. Same as always.” She stared out the window. It was just past lunch time, and the streets were filled with cars.
“You were amazing at the award show.” Jackson complimented. “You looked so tough!”
Tori snorted. “Thanks. It wasn’t really my type of thing.”
“Doesn’t matter.” Mark said. “You were incredible.”
“I learned from the best.” She winked at him.
They chatted for the rest of the drive, talking about everything from new choreography to Jackson’s plans to visit him family back in Hong Kong. When they arrived at the restaurant, it was full to the brim. There was even a line of people waiting outside to get in.
“Are you sure they have room for us?” Jackson asked worriedly.
Tori nodded. “They have a room ready for us. Let’s go.”
They stepped out of the cab, all keeping their heads down as they approached the doors. Still, people seemed to catch on, and there were cameras flashing as they walked.
Tori smiled at the host as they reached the door. “Anneyonghaseyo. I called earlier. There should be a reservation under the name Park Heechul.”
The man didn’t even have to look down. “Right this way, Miss.Park.” He led them into the restaurant.
“Miss.Park?” Jackson teased.
The inside of the restaurant was dimly lit, decorated in a classic design of traditional mexican architecture. The smell of spices wafted in from every corner of the building, and Tori could practically feel herself drooling.
They stepped into a back room, and found a little table set up for three people, hidden behind a screen.
“Oh, it’s so cute!” Tori clapped.
“Whatever. I was promised a taco.” Jackson complained.
“We have the taco bar platter on it’s way, sir.” The host bowed and left the room.
Jackson pulled out the chair for her, and she sat down and waited as they settled themselves around the table.
“It smells amazing in here.” Mark gasped.
“I’m so hungry.” Tori moaned as the shadow of a waiter holding a tray of food passed by their screen.
Jackson raised an eyebrow. “Did you not eat this morning? Are you on a diet again?”
“Are you? We told JYP to make sure that the nutritionist wasn’t being too hard on you. If you get much thinner you’re going to disappear.” Mark worried.
Tori shook her head, laughing slightly. “Nothing too extreme, don’t worry. I just didn’t eat because I knew we’d be having a big dinner.”
Mark nodded. “Okay, but it they put you on some ridiculous restrictions you call us. We’ll figure it out for you.”
“Who? JB? That’ll go well.” Tori giggled.
“We’ll figure it out.” Jackson pointed between him and Mark. “We’re your oppas, we gotta look out for you. Or, if all else fails, we call Suzy.”
“How is eonnie?” Tori asked.
“Busy.” Mark replied. “We’ve barely talked to her.”
The rest of their meal dissolved into meaningless chatter as the food and drinks arrived. Tori took two tacos, and then three more when the boys kept adding them to her plate. The boys each ate five. Quite honestly it looked like the waiters were a little disturbed by how much they ate.
When their bellies were full, they sat back in their chairs. Jackson requested the bill and called a taxi to come pick them up.
“Who’s paying?” Mark asked.
“I can. I haven’t payed yet.” Tori offered.
“Nope.” Mark refused her. “You don’t count. It’s Jackson, me, or the company card.”
Tori rolled her eyes but relented. In all the times they’d hung out, GOT7 had never let any of the Stray Kids members pay. They finally decided to put it on Jackson’s card, and they payed well and left the restaurant.
There was a bigger crowd outside now. There were definitely some fans who had arrived for the soul purpose of seeing some idols. They waved and smiled as they stepped into their taxi and headed home.
As they dropped her off, Jackson and Mark promised to invite her out again soon. She agreed, and gave both of them a hug and a kiss on the cheek before she went inside.
