Buffalo Bills Deliver on Time Late

It’s tough to beat the Dolphins when they don’t obey officials.  The Buffalo Bills did as told.  Such limitations led to them passing for 139 yards and holding the ball for a measly 23:41.  Congratulations to Miami on their granted wish.

Bills fans are glad their favorites contributed to another uncompetitive Thursday Night Football game.  Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit spending the fourth quarter trying to remember baseball players was thrilling in its way.

The good news for the Dolphins is that they didn’t concede a field goal on their first drive.  They’ve undoubtedly spent this current somewhat long break focused on that.  Buffalo’s fourth down contrast with Miami’s flaming failure couldn’t have set the game’s tone better.  Ed Oliver is Miami’s offensive coordinator.  He says go for it.

James Cook was responsible for a one-play drive that barely used any clock.  What was he thinking?  I guess scoring was a worthwhile tradeoff.  An 18-point game would be a pretty good basketball showing.  In football, it’s a career night.  Cook served as Oliver’s counterpart in how he stepped up this outing to serve as the primary threat.  If trends continue, they’ll each serve as a distraction from the latest featured Bills against Jacksonville.

A multidimensional play jumps off the page.  Options begin up front.  Blocking seems far more accomplished in their first pair of examples.  I blame Ken Dorsey, as that’s always a good idea.  A more straightforward steamrolling technique has enabled the rushing attack that Buffalo relies on in an alternate dimension.  The success following handing off means not having to rely on whoever’s their quarterback to move spectacularly.

Josh Allen loves the Power Glove.  It’s so bad.  Particularly tiresome concern trolls outsiders fretted that a fearlessly intense competitor would be felled by a bruised non-throwing hand.  Coincidentally, they’re the same ones who spent a very fulfilling offseason claiming he’s overrated.

First play’s receiver Dalton Kincaid heard he wasn’t part of the offense.  Four receptions doesn’t seem like a lot except for how it’s four times as many as he had in the opener.  Bettors who look for what’s next instead of thinking what’s now will continue indefinitely should anticipate the de facto top receiver trending upward.

I wish the Bills hadn’t shown they can still defend with Terrel Bernard hurt.  We were one more injury from seeing how good Josh is at linebacker.  The Joe Andreessen story   has a chance to sound even more implausible if he can seize opportunity.

The primary concern for the opposing quarterback is living healthily.  But the Dolphins still have to figure out what to do about the way he played while he was feeling his best.  To honor his favorite quarterback Josh Allen, Tua threw to Bills.  Maybe he’s right-handed.  I’m not saying the arm he uses is weak, but he couldn’t even heave it into the stands.  It’a apparently tough to aim at the crowd and hit it.  Ja’Marcus Ingram’s interception with the score was like homering during an intended intentional walk.  Fans have been urging the wrong quarterback to slide.  If it makes Dolphins fans feel better, Tua makes more than Josh.

Having a saboteur helps.  Jordan Poyer remains so fond of his erstwhile team that he undermined his current employer with a cheap shot.  If that wasn’t enough, his wretched angle before a missed tackle ensured Cook scored his most impressive touchdown.  Players may leave, but the attachment may remain.  A beloved departed player is still the Bills MVP.

I hope everyone has had fun with a season that’s speeding by Cook-style.  A  decent portion of it is already done.  We’re already through 11.8 percent of Bills games this season.  As with winning so dominantly, the math astounds.

Feeling like you waited forever for something that’s over instantly is the welcome downside of starting 2-0 in under four and a half days.  Taking a vacation the week after Christmas seems like revelry is spaced too closely, but you may as well enjoy another Tom and Jerry while presented with the opportunity.

That was one odd time for a Sunday off.  Playing Thursday then a week from Monday is throwing off routines.  Scattering the schedule across multiple days provides countless options for watching professional football just like you’re not stuck choosing the best television option out of three.  That’s why you’ll soon get to tune in to games at 10:37 a.m. on Tuesday.

Winning against Miami constantly is fun.  Why didn’t they dominate a divisional rival like this before?  I guess it’s tricky, what with having to assemble a good team.  But conditions have finally come together.  Similarly, Bills night games haven’t inspired dread in awhile.  Perpetual struggles were long enough ago that you forgot your tweets about them.  Dredging up pain is best when you’re no longer suffering.

Jayden Daniels: 2023 Heisman Trophy Winner

Senior quarterback Jayden Daniels from Louisiana State University was announced as the 89th winner of the Heisman Memorial Trophy during ESPN’s 2023 Heisman Trophy Ceremony Presented by Nissan on Saturday (Dec. 9), originating from Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York, N.Y.

Fellow Heisman finalists quarterback Michael Penix Jr. of Washington, quarterback Bo Nix of Oregon and wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. of Ohio State finished second, third and fourth, respectively, in the Heisman balloting.

Daniels is LSU’s third Heisman winner as he joins Joe Burrow (2019) and Billy Cannon (1959) among Tigers to hoist the bronze statue. He is also the 20th quarterback in the last 23 years to win the award and the 39th quarterback overall.

The 6-foot-4 Daniels, born in San Bernardino Calif., completed 236-of-327 passes for 3,812 yards and 40 touchdowns with just four interceptions while also rushing for 1,134 yards and another 10 scores.

He leads the nation in total offense (4,946), TDs responsible for (50), passer rating (208.0, currently above the NCAA record), yards per pass attempt (11.7) and rushing yards by a quarterback (1,134) while his 40 TD passes are tied for first.

Daniels earlier this week was named the 2023 AP Player of the Year in addition to winning the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm, Davey O’Brien National Quarterback and Walter Camp Player of the Year Awards. He is also a five-time SEC Offensive Player of the Week winner this season.

He became the first player in FBS history to rush for 200 yards and pass for 350 yards in a game when he did it against Florida on Nov. 11, collecting 372 yards through the air and 234 on the ground. The 606 total yards broke the SEC record. Daniels joined Heisman winner Johnny Manziel as the only other player in SEC history to pass for 3,500 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in a season and is the eighth player to do it overall.

Daniels’ passer rating of 208.01 is a Heisman best and his 4,946 total yards is tied for the third-most by a Heisman winner, matching 2018 winner Kyler Murray’s total. His 50 total touchdowns are the seventh most in Heisman history and his 3,812 passing yards is 12th most.

Daniels is the fifth player in the last seven years who won the award after transferring and he is the first Heisman winner born in California since Matt Leinart won it in 2004. Despite the drought, California has still produced 14 Heisman winners, more than any other state.

He is just the third senior to win the award since 2006, the other two including Burrow (2019) and DeVonta Smith (2020). Daniels, the first Heisman winner coached by Brian Kelly, is the 34th winner from the SEC.

Penix Jr. is Washington’s highest finisher ever in Heisman balloting, topping defensive tackle Steve Emtman’s fourth-place finish in 1991. Nix is Oregon’s highest finisher since Marcus Mariota won the award in 2014. Harrison Jr. is Ohio State’s highest finisher since C.J. Stroud was third in 2022.

The 2023 Heisman Trophy ballots went out to 928 electors, which includes 870 members of the media, our 57 living Heisman winners and one overall fan vote presented by Nissan, premier partner of the Heisman Trophy. All ballots were submitted electronically to the independent accountants at Deloitte.

Cleveland Browns receiver Jordan Cameron says it's the attention to opposing defenses instead of issues with quarterback Jason Campbell that has slowed his speed in recent weeks according to the May Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

"I need to improve my speed and need to find a method to get open",'' said Cameron. "I must try to get in there and perform better. I must perform better and contribute to the team and do everything I can to assist this team. This is what I want to do."

The third-year player was enjoying a stellar 2013. however his production has started to drop significantly the past two weeks, with the new starting quarterback Jason Campbell targeting Cameron just 18 times over the course of the past three games. Cameron is a 45-yard receiver who recorded 45 catches for 515 yards and six touchdowns through the beginning seven games of the season, is averaging just seven catches for 33 yards the last two games.

Cameron, who had been emerging as a big-play threat for the offensively-challenged Browns this season, says that defenses are rolling coverage his way and are now limiting his effectiveness downfield. Cameron, who is just a rookie receiver, says it's his job to work harder and take on the defense and that he's not worried about chemistry with his team's quarterback.

"I don't think that it's Jason not at all Cameron said. Cameron declared. "They're blocking you on the line and then somebody hitting you on the second level. So it's just a little more difficult to chemistry with madden 23 mut coins the route. The timing of the route is slightly off."

Ferris State: 2022 NCAA Division II College Football National Champions

It’s 1,050 miles from Muskegon, Michigan, to McKinney, Texas, the site of the 2022 Division II NCAA football title game.

But on Saturday, the two seemed a lot closer as Ferris State wide receivers Brady Rose and CJ Jefferson — who both starred for Muskegon high school teams — delivered big plays in the Bulldogs’ 41-14 mauling of Colorado School of Mines for FSU’s second straight national championship.

Ferris State became the fourth team to win back-to-back D-II titles this century, and the first since Northwest Missouri State did it in 2015-16. (Grand Valley State also won consecutive titles in 2002-03 and 2005-06.)

Rose, the former Mona Shores star, connected with Jefferson, the former Muskegon standout, for a 48-yard gain on a halfback pass early in the second quarter to set up a field goal, and Jefferson had a 19-yard run for a touchdown late in the quarter to extend the Bulldogs’ lead to 20.

Meanwhile, Ferris State’s defense harassed Mines QB John Matocha and completely shut down the Orediggers’ offense. Mines entered Saturday’s game averaging more than 40 points a game; it managed just 21 yards in the first half. Matocha, who won the Harlon Hill Trophy (D-II’s version of the Heisman) on Friday night, had just two completions in the first half — and one to a Ferris State player; Matocha’s throw late in the second quarter popped off the hands of his receiver and into the arms of FSU defensive back Sidney McCloud, who took it 31 yards for a 27-point FSU lead.

The Bulldogs’ offense did just fine without a Harlon Hill finalist, as Mylik Mitchell completed 14 of 18 passes for 161 yards to keep FSU moving. Jefferson had seven catches for 95 yards and Rose added four catches for 50 yards and five rushes for 39 yards to his long pass. (He also had a tackle on defense.)

On defense, FSU’s Caleb Murphy, the Harlon Hill runner-up, went without a sack — he had 25½ entering the game — but still had three tackles (1½ for loss) and pressured Matocha all day. Jordan Jones had two sacks and 2½ tackles for loss for the Bulldogs as well. The dominance on defense for FSU was such that the Orediggers didn’t pick up their initial first down until there was 7:26 remaining in the second quarter; the Orediggers’ first third-down conversion didn’t come until there was just 16:27 remaining in the game, after nine straight failures.

Indeed, prior to the third-down conversion — a 6-yard pass from Matocha to T Smith on third-and-4 from FSU’s 16 — Mines’ biggest play had been a 25-yard punt that bounced off an FSU player and was recovered for a 50-yard gain. The Bulldogs’ defense recovered quickly, forcing two incompletions, a run for no gain and, finally, a sack by Jones on fourth-and-10. After the Orediggers got their first third-down conversion, they scored on the next play on a 10-yard pass from Matocha to Michael Zeman.

After another Ferris State touchdown and a swap of fruitless drives by each team, Mines scored its second TD as Matocha found Josh Johnston on a 14-yard pass.

But Ferris State wasn’t done, as Mitchell led the Bulldogs on another clock-killing drive before handing the reins at quarterback in the red zone to Carson Gulker. He scored his third TD of the game on a push by the offensive line that carried him about 6 yards. Gulker had eight carries for 17 yards but scored from 2, 1 and 6 yards out.

The Bulldogs finish the season at 14-1, with their lone loss coming Oct. 15 against Grand Valley State. This is FSU’s eighth straight 11-win season, the fourth-longest active streak in all divisions, behind only Ohio State (10, Alabama (10) and FCS-level North Dakota State (11).
