TV Tag Game!
— list 8 shows for your followers to get to know you better. tagged by @abliafina-18782 thank you my lovely!! 💕
No one judge my list. I'm a gay depressed ND british person who's really a grandma in the body of a 22 yr old.
1. Downton Abbey
Tumblr media
This is my most rewatched show. I can quote it all in my sleep. No more needs to be said.
2. Midsomer Murders
Tumblr media
Also heavily rewatched. If it's on on the TV, my friends do a game where they see how long it takes for me to guess what episode it is. Shortest time has been a few seconds, longest time a minute. It has over 22 seasons and I know all the episodes so well.
3. BBC Merlin
Tumblr media
What's not to fucking love? Gay, fantasy, swords, humour... perfection. Apart from the last episode... we don't talk about the last episode.
4. Star Trek - The Original Series
Tumblr media
This was a big part of my childhood cause my mum is a huge Trekkie, but it was also on the TV every night at 6pm during sixth form. Which became a ritual and an emotional support crutch. Didn't matter what happened during the day - tos would be on the TV at 6pm and everything would be fine.
5. BBC Miranda
Tumblr media
I don't need to say anything else apart from: look at the gif. Of course I have an emotional connection to this show.
6. The Vicar of Dibley
Tumblr media
Similar to the caption for Miranda... the gif speaks volumes... I also listen to this to go to sleep.
7. The Good Life
Tumblr media
Now this is a British sit com from the 70s, based around a man and his wife who live in the posh suburbs of London. One day he decides to quit his corporate job and become self-sufficient, so he and his wife turn their garden into a farm with crops and animals and it's just carnage. They live next door to an uptight posh woman (right in the gif) who's very disapproving and her husband who is Done™ with life. I can't explain it well but it's funny and very entertaining.
8. Dance Moms
Tumblr media
Can't believe I'm putting a reality TV show on this list but it's iconic. It's really familiar so I like rewatching random episodes and watching clips on YouTube. I just find it entertaining.
No pressure tags: @unmistakablyunknown @derpinathebrave @ladymarycrawley @foreverralways @babygirllinds

a list of (maybe?) all the queer characters that appear in midsomer murders.
cw for homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, abuse, death, violence, slurs and sexual content.
spoilers for all series.
Series 1-5
Notes:
Where possible I've avoided using specific labels but used descriptions given within the episodes by the characters themselves or others.
I've included brief descriptions of their role in the episode and other details. These are not intended as full summaries.
I've used the wiki to check details so hopefully it's fairly accurate.
Season 1: Tom Barnaby & Gavin Troy
Gerald Hadleigh, E01S01 Written in Blood. Sexually abused as a child, he kills his father and runs away. He is revealed during the episode to cross-dress and is described by other characters as a transvestite. He attends a gay bar in Causton. Other characters, including Troy, express confusion and/or disgust at his cross-dressing and his dresses. He is killed by another character for implying he and her brother were lovers and her disgust at seeing him in a dress. Barnaby is largely neutral about Gerald, but does assume he must have seen a psychologist regarding his cross-dressing.
Tim Young & Avery Phillips , E02S01 The Hollow Man. They run a second hand bookshop and are partners. Avery expresses concern to another character that Tim is cheating and/or will lose interest as he did not identify as gay his entire life. Later, Tim is revealed to have been having an affair with a woman. She threatens to reveal the affair, but Tim confesses to Avery before she can. We see Avery crying in his arms as Tim tells him that he only loves him.
Simone Hollingsworth and Sarah Lawton, E03S01 Faithful Unto Death. Troy immediately calls them dykes cause of course he does. Sarah has a little chat with Barnaby about the joy of being the only gays in the village. Barnaby is very chill and accepting. Simone and Sarah fake a kidnapping to help Simone escape her (supposedly) abusive husband, kill a bunch of people and steal some money. Simone betrays Sarah after Sarah has gone to prison for her.
Season 2: Tom Barnaby & Gavin Troy
Ian Eastham and Charles, E01S02 Death's Shadow. Ian is discovered in bed with Charles (a youngish minor character) by our detectives. Ian says he is not gay and is disgusted by his own impulses. He is paying Charles to sleep with him.
Season 3: Tom Barnaby & Gavin Troy
Arthur Prewitt, E02S03 Blue Herrings. A resident of the residential nursing home. Almost immediately described as a "poofter" by Troy. Barnaby reminds Troy that it was illegal to be gay when Arthur was young. Troy laughs cause he's an arsehole. Arthur is a very particular and tidy person. He confesses to tidying another resident's room, accidentally scaring her and causing her death out of shock.
Frank Mannion, E03S03 Judgement Day. A TV presenter and judge for the village competition. Is mostly just flirty and bitchy. Honestly kind of delightful. Unfortunately gets a lot of snide homophobia from other characters.
Alan Bradford, E04S03 Beyond the Grave. He's briefly suspected of taking vengeance on a woman for not being into him but, in a hilarious analogy, he describes himself as "If sexuality were the Civil War, I'd be a Cavalier not a Roundhead". He then says he's never been attracted to the opposite sex. Luckily Troy makes no comment.
Season 4: Tom Barnaby & Gavin Troy
N/A
Season 5: Tom Barnaby & Gavin Troy
Melissa Townsend and Sally Rickworth E01S05 Tainted Fruit. Melissa is killed early on and Sally is suspected briefly after their previous affair was revealed. Their relationship is a secret and historical and really they're frenemies. Also Melissa is played by Lucy Punch and therefore incredible.
Honourable mentions:
Dennis Rainbird from the pilot episode, The Killings at Badger's Drift. Assigned suspiciously queer at Gavin Troy but there isn't much here to say either way.

3. Keeping up Apparances
Tumblr media
Legends only. i mean how else would i ever have learned about solid silver self-cleaning sauce separators, or the meaning of “limpid”? can probably quote most episodes word by word by now. #oggirlboss
4. Pasila
Tumblr media
idk what to say about this tbh. a finnish animation series about police station life and how all the characters should have some other job instead (or retire). jännä. i guess. tietäjät tietää. #mopedillaseinään
5. Kinnporsche
Tumblr media
the current obsession like you havent noticed. this show hit me on the head like a silver tray. just be gay do crimes find love and lose your morals in the process but its all fine its all fine its really not. but hey at least theres funny scenes! and then your heart is wrenched out of your chest. #tw:animal death
6. 5 Minutes Before Chaos
Tumblr media
srsly didnt even realise to consider a reality show as an option for this but im glad it came up bc these idiots, weekly on tv in the summer of 2014 were the driving force behind the part of my identity that calls itself a meme maker. block b were the chaos children of the kpop scene back then and we basked in all their betraying of each other. #sparrowjaehyo
7. Sex and the City
Tumblr media
listen let me have this. im old enough to have been young enough to not have clocked most of the things askew with the writing, i just loved the dramatics and the fashion and the big city dreams
8. Midsomer Murders
Tumblr media
bc when one dc barnaby ages out we bring in another dc barnaby and his ever-changing sidekicks. slowcooked oldschool countryside murder mysteries, just to my taste.
further tagging @jeffersonhairpie @mint-hint @bloomette @morayofsunshine if you feel like collating a list of your own!

I’ve decided that each episode of Midsomer Murders has a gay person in it even if there aren’t any explicitly gay characters in that episode (which there almost always are) because I’ve decided that GAVIN TROY!!!! is a deeply in denial gay guy.
Evidence:
1. He’s time and time again the most homophobic character on the show in a show full of characters of all ages and backgrounds who are pretty much fine with gay people or don’t care either way. He can’t be doing it to curry favor with his supervisor Inspector Barnaby because Barnaby has made it very clear that he doesn’t like it when Troy does that. He usually says something homophobic within minutes of meeting or encountering a gay person, though thankfully usually not to their faces. Gay people seem to make him genuinely nervous. Do you think they can tell, Gavin? That you’re like them? That you’re like them and don’t want anyone to know?
2. In the episode I just watched Barnaby says something like “Do you see what I’m getting at?” and Troy smiles helplessly, indulgently, and says “Yes, sir.” Thus starts my Gavin Troy Is In Love With His Boss agenda.
3. Gavin is a gay-ass name. That’s science.
Yes, it is quite unlike me to wait until the eighth episode of a show (that has 90 minute episodes) before strapping on my yaoi goggles. But before you tell me you’re proud of me for waiting so long, please note that almost every single one of the preceding episodes had canonically gay people in them so I didn’t have to make my own entertainment by pretending random characters are gay.

Midsomer Murders has like. a lot more gay people in it than I anticipated. all one-off characters so far, but still, I think it’s come up in more episodes than not? with great variety - sometimes they’re awful, sometimes they’re lovely; always they’re characters with depth. I’m certainly not going to come out and tell you it’s Great Rep or anything, but it’s really interesting to me, especially coming from a British show in the late nineties. I’ve watched a lot of crime procedurals and similar tv, and gay folks definitely aren’t depicted this often or with this much complexity in pretty much any of them, especially in any of the stuff I’ve seen from the aughts. (I’m not sure I’ve watched anything before this from the nineties.) things have gotten a little better in the last decade or so, but it’s often slow going.
it’s also interesting to me that in spite of any unconscious biases the writers might have affecting the way they write these characters, the actual expressed, on-screen attitudes are mostly quite accepting. Troy is sometimes a bit uncomfortable, and he tends to use, uh, not-so-polite terms, but there’s little to no malice there - if anything, he’s usually just kind of clueless. but Barnaby is quite straightforward about not minding anyone’s sexuality. off the top of my dome, there was the guy in 2x01 who expressed disgust at his own desires, but that aside I can’t recall any overt homophobia in-fiction so far.
…as an aside, am*zon claims I’m watching 2x03 Dead Man’s Eleven right now, but I went to look up something about the episode and it appears that I’m actually seeing 3x04. so. that’s interesting. still, though, the gay character is pretty good.

How is it that every episode so far of this detective show from 1998 has had at least one, usually, two, gays.
I'm four episodes into the first season and Every. Episode. So. Far.
Half of them have been more wholesome than the straights? Which isn't a high bar, considering what the straights are up to, but still. Absolutely baffling for a british cop show from when I was three.
(This is about Midsomer Murders, btw.)
(Don't... don't go into it without looking up the trigger warnings first. I've seen later seasons, and I was still absolutely blindsided by the very first episode being as full of [redacted] as it was.)

grunge rewatches midsomer murders pt 2
full disclosure: I'm mostly knitting and kind of watching bc I'm still rotted only season 1 of Little Mosque on the Prairie is available on prime & if I want to watch the rest I have to sign up for Disney+
but anyway, here's pt 2 of That Corpse Is Breathing Pretty Deeply Fellas You Sure She's Dead?
2x01 Death's Shadow
opening with a flashback. always a good omen. Gerald/Liam started with a flashback and that episode was fucking wild man
Judy Parfitt...Judy Parfitt...
I know I could look her up but I want to be surprised by how I know her
no Joyce don't fall victim to the wedding industrial complex
OH
SISTER MONICA JOAN
OF COURSE IT'S SISTER MONICA JOAN
I FUCKING LOVE SISTER MONICA JOAN
ahh good old Badger's Drift
all the good murders happen in Badger's Drift
"the head bounced into the hall" yikes
I knew there was a beheading in Badger's Drift I just got the episodes mixed up
why are there so many abusive husbands in these villages
well that hymn definitely isn't shared with the UCC
and we're back in the One And Only Lawyer's Office Set
oh that's a good murder
so dramatic and intense
love it
that corpse definitely isn't breathing
no lungs left
side effect of being burned to a crisp
please tell me someone's going to get an arrow through the neck
Chekhov's quiver
fine I'll settle for an arrow in the back
a character called Fletcher getting killed by a bow & arrow. beautiful
*gets caught in bed with a 19yo man* "I am not a homosexual, it disgusts me" baby boy... let me introduce you to the concept of internalized homophobia
"we never meant to hurt him" YOU LYNCHED A CHILD
WHY WOULD YOU PUT A NOOSE AROUND A CHILD'S NECK AND MAKE HIM STAND ON A RICKETY CHAIR ON UNEVEN GROUND IF YOU NEVER MEANT TO HURT HIM
gotta love it when the corpses don't breathe. such a rarity on this show
2x02 Strangler's Wood
only rated 13+? that doesn't bode well
this is the episode that was on PBS the other day that made me want to rewatch the series
they censored the word "shit"
idk why you can't say "shit" after 9pm on American television
anyway...let the commentary commence
if I didn't know that was Phyllis Logan I wouldn't believe it
11yo boys in the woods before school is never good
grown ass man can't take care of himself
stop infantalizing your husbands challenge 1998
ahh there's some good old fashioned victim blaming
I do appreciate a good Obvious Red Herring
I think one of the writers has a choking fetish
that comment's gonna get me some bots isn't it
"help my son is gay" "get a life"
I know I only watched this the other day but I already forget if they address why Kate Merrill recognizes Troy's name
like obviously he's written to her agony column, at least that's how they're setting it up, but I don't remember if they actually address it
"she's being dying for about 6 years now. we're getting used to it"
hey it's a Jenny Lind bed! *proceeds to sing Heave Away on loop in my head*
Come get your duds in order cause we're bound to cross the water
Heave away me jollies heave away
Come get your duds in order cause we're bound to leave tomorrow
Heave away me jolly b'ys we're all bound away
it's just not the same without Connor Bedard
what is with the kids in these villages? is there something in the water that makes them all psychopaths?
the continuity in this show is *chef's kiss*
gotta reference every previous case always
...is this what straight men find attractive?
is that cigarette ad supposed to be sexy?
I love the Terrible American Accent that is specific to shows like this
got distracted by making a knitting pattern more complicated than it needs to be because intentionally stressing myself out over a lace wedding veil is more interesting than rewatching an episode I just saw like 2 days ago
I'll try to be more focused for the next ep but for now it's eurovision performances and then bed
2x03 Dead Man's Eleven
ah fuck it's cricket themed I'm gonna be completely out of my depth
full disclosure: it's nearly 40c (104f) and I don't have air conditioning so if my computer (or my brain) overheats, the commentary will be brief
like this
nearly 20mins in and I have no clue what's going on because my brain is soup
haunted museum? 350-year-old family feud? that's all I've got
something about smoked mackerel
good god the sound on my parents tv is fucking awful
the music and screaming are painfully loud but the dialogue is barely audible
I get that Sandra is traumatized and all but jesus everything she says is a piercing shriek
wait a minute
the episode description mentioned cricket
why is there no cricket yet?
I want to steal my cat's cooling mat
can I make it through the last 30 minutes before taking a nap?
why am I not intrigued by this episode? is it boring? is it the difficult-to-hear dialogue making the episode hard to follow even with captions? is it the heat making it impossible to focus? we may never know
hard to tell if the corpse is breathing when it's buried
good lord that was the longest 7 minutes of my life how is there still 23 minutes to go?
*makes impatient "wrap it up" gesture*
OH MARTYR WARREN. it's a place!
I thought they've been saying Marta since 1x01
I assumed they were talking about a person who lived in Midsomer
someone everyone knows, runs a cute little shop or something, pillar of the community, everyone's nan kind of person
one of those characters who's always referenced but never seen. like Villix'pran or Captain Boday on DS9
apparently this is actually 3x04 Beyond The Grave. the real 2x03 has a really great cast (Imelda Staunton, Annabelle Apsion, Robert Hardy, Toby Jones). can't tell you who any of these folks are though
3 minutes left...
of course they read daily mail
but at least they're critical of it
ok nap time. summer is the worst.
2x04 Blood Will Out
the heat broke and my parents have gone out so I get the good tv tonight. let's wrap up season 2
Martyr Warren. of course it's set in Martyr Warren
this ep is about Travellers, it's gonna be culturally insensitive isn't it?
who is this guy
OH
he's Gibbs from Pirates of the Carribean
Hector Bridges reminds me of Dr Bombay
ok so far this isn't as bad as I expected
there's still an hour and a half to prove me wrong though
like yeah there are townspeople who are being dicks but so far the police have just said "please don't litter and please leave when you said you would"
"I'm not kinky"
no shit Troy
you're so repressed vanilla is too spicy for you
and that's coming from me
Barnaby gets points for the casual use of the singular they
please tell me those are not morris dancers in blackface
I do appreciate that the rich bigots are the baddies here and not the travellers like you would expect from a nearly 30 year old show
also appreciate the widow not grieving her abusive husband
"the killer did us a favour"
Wife Swap: version 2.0
ah there we go
Troy being the asshole we know and hate
love me some gossipy bitches gossiping about murder over a game of scrabble
this is some spec ops shit isn't it
nope not spec ops just a corrupt commander
Troy may be as kinky as a slice of wonder bread, but the writers of this show are definitely into some shit
or has AO3 just completely ruined me and I see kink where there is none?
"I made the classic mistake of not believing you had been abused" a cop making a good and sincere apology? I'm shocked
murdering someone with a shotgun while dressed in all white is a bold move girl
well that's season 2 over and done with I guess. see you back here for season 3.

Hi everyone,
I know that I said I’d post a what-to-watch poll for our next Zoom, but my hay fever (originally autocorrected to: gay fever, and I wish that would be the case) has slowly been killing me during the last days and I have about zero energy right now.
So to keep things simple:
If you answer no, which is absolutely okay, you’ll have to comment with a (feasible) alternative. 😄

I still don’t get why I have never seen Night of the Stag repeated on TV not even once. Sure OK there’s a sort of attempted (but foiled) sexual assault in it but they don’t seem to have any issue repeating episodes like Written in Blood which has both the paedophile teacher and past child abuse/rape storylines (also the ‘woman is so in love with her dead brother she keeps his mummified corpse in her house, violently murders his gay lover and is hoping his wife will die from AIDS’ storyline which is... kind of a messed up storyline even by Midsomer standards). They also seem to have no issue showing some other pretty screwed up episodes just with some of the more extreme bits edited out. Why don’t they show Night of the Stag then?

September 2, 2022
The fear of making a mistake is paralyzing, actually.
One of my roommates has just accepted a full-time job for after graduation which is... wild, to say the least.  It did briefly make me wonder whether graduate school really is the smart way to go but also like 1. what am I gonna do with a BS in biology and 2. what could I do with a BS in anthropology and I mean like yeah I’ve still got a choice and I could totally go and just teach myself how to code or whatever but also I don’t know if being stuck in a corporate machine is really for me.  It’s either grad school, minimum wage lab tech, or minimum wage retail.
I must admit that in my attempts to simplify my weekly cooking and make it easier to choose things to make by developing a ton of possibilities I have inadvertently given myself too many choices and have made it more difficult for me to choose things to make, somehow.  Ultimately the goal is to try two new recipes a month to gradually grow my repertoire but we’ll see how that goes.
Today I’m thankful for the Star Trek pre-TNG book I bought today for... wait for it... ninety-four cents.  I mean it’s basically fanfiction I think (there are so so many star trek books, it’d be pretty wild if they were all cannon) but STILL what a great price!!!  If I manage to finish the other Grishaverse books this semester, I’ll probably start on that one.  Today I’m also thankful that I had the foresight to make some thicc shortbread cookies before I left home because these things have been fantastic little treats this week.  A shame I’m going to gobble down my last one in a few minutes, but they brought me joy while they lasted.
Oh also I’ve been listening to EXU: Calamity E4 sporadically all week and I still have an hour and a half left and it’s fantastic and I am shaking down to my bones.  The crew is trying SO HARD to stop this inevitable event from happening.  This event that’s shaped the history of Exandria.  I need to get back to reading Crooked Kingdom; Midsomer Murders (the cowboy episode basically called me the n word and told me to go back to Africa (they had Confederate flags hangin about for a reenactment lol) but dang if it wasn’t a good’un) has held me in a chokehold during mealtimes (and during post-meal resttimes which is when the temptation to nap bubbles its way up) but I may have to force myself to call it quits.  The OG Barnaby leaves after this season I think anyway (and we still haven’t had a black speaking role (I’ve only seen two black extras, both dancers I think) (there’s been some East Asian rep but still, broken English stereotyping (more gay murderers than black ones, more trans representation than black representation oh my god (nothing against trans rep (though to be frank it was in the nineties and not favorable in the slightest) I just think it’s funny (or... perhaps culturally telling?) that there have been no black characters (and idk maybe that’s just a product of the setting: small, rural villages comprised mostly of the older well-to-do upper middle class))))).
