i've cried over will so many times ever since the show started all the way back in 2016 because he's suffered from the very beginning and it absolutely breaks my heart knowing that he's barely had any happy moments in his life. and it’s not just because he’s my favourite character and comfort character and i relate to him so much, but also because he’s the most kind, loving, strong and selfless person on this entire show and it hurts so bad knowing he’s never truly been happy.

he was abused and bullied as a child by his own father and school bullies. his family has always struggled financially and is looked down upon by other people in town. he suffers from anxiety. he has been struggling with his sexuality in a time where being gay isn’t accepted. he’s in love with his best friend. he got kidnapped and taken to an alternate dimension, resulting in more ptsd. he comes back and finds out the boy he’s in love with has eyes for the girl that opened the gate to the upside down that resulted in his kidnapping in the first place. he gets possessed by the mindflayer and suffers physically and mentally. his body was burning, his brain was being affected, the mindflayer was literally taking over him. he was willing to sacrifice his own life to put an end to it all. summer comes around and everyone is happy in their relationships and experiencing romance while will is alone. he just wants to play d&d because it’s an escape and distraction from the real world and he’s been through so much trauma. no one wants to play or spend time with him so he gets excluded. he has to watch the boy he’s in love with obsess over his girlfriend and it hurts so bad. he gets told that everyone is growing up and getting girlfriends and feels even more left out and isolated when he hears the words “it’s not my fault you don’t like girls”. he destroys castle byers, his hiding spot and safe place, and rips up his photographs and artwork because he feels so alone and different. he has to leave his best friend and the boy he’s in love with even though they’ve been by each other’s side since they were 4 years old. he gets asked if he’ll join another party and he says “not possible”, because he could never move on from him. he keeps his promise and creates a beautiful painting for the boy he loves most of something that’s incredibly special to them; their d&d party. he’s excited to finally reunite with him because they lost contact and he misses him so much. he goes in for a hug but is met with a awkward shoulder touch instead. imagine how horrible and embarrassing it would feel to have a hug rejected by the person you love most and just wanted to hold again. he’s excluded again and has to watch him with his girlfriend. they don’t talk to him or include him on their date. it’s like he doesn’t even matter. he gets told he’s being an asshole for looking sad and then confronts mike for not contacting him enough. he gets apologised to shortly after and feels a moment of happiness but it’s still sad because he doesn’t know what to do about his feelings. he sits with mike on top of a car and explains why it’s so hard to open up to the people you care about most in case they don’t like the truth. he knows he can’t confess his feelings for many reasons; the boy he loves is currently in a relationship and being gay wasn’t accepted so he doesn’t know how people will react. it’s devastating and terrifying. will ends up showing him his painting that he worked so hard on and his face lights up when he sees it. this makes the next part even more painful. will lies and says it was commissioned by his girlfriend and then confesses his love for mike, but he uses eleven’s name to disguise it. he pours his heart out and makes mike so happy. will needs mike the same way mike wants to be needed. they both need each other and they don’t even realise it yet. will calls mike “the heart”, because he’s his heart. mike has always been will’s safe place and comfort. when he saw that mike was upset in the car, he did whatever he could to make him happy. will inspired him, gave him motivation and made him smile. this entire scene shows us how selfless and loving will is. it’s beautiful but heartbreaking. will loves mike so much that he did what he had to in order to make him happy even if that meant sacrificing his own feelings and hiding the truth. then he had to watch mike confess to his girlfriend even though the monologue was filled with lies and mike copied will’s words since will is the one that made him say it in the first place.

will byers deserves to be happy. he has to get his happy ending. they can’t put him through any more pain. and regardless of what anyone says, i think he deserves to end up with the boy he loves most that he’s known for almost his entire life because that would make him the happiest. they belong together and they make each other feel safe. they bring out the best in each other. they can actually be themselves with each other. they both make each other feel worth something. will also told mike that he’s never felt like a mistake because of him. he isn’t just a “crush” to will, he’s the love of his life. they make each other the happiest and i just want to see them happy.

The hopclair hug at the end of vol 2 GETS me, for two main reasons:

1. the look Lucas gives her beforehand.

2. El's face during the hug.

The first one especially gets me, because Lucas, without knowing El was there with him that night, gives her this look of true understanding.

He doesn't know that she tried just as he did to save Max. He doesn't know that she holds just as much guilt as he does over her current condition. He doesn't know the many reasons as to why what they are feeling is so similar in that moment.

All he knows is that El cares about Max just as much as he does, and that she must be feeling just as awful as he is. In his mind, their only point of connection is their love for Max, and he's right. Their shared love for Max is what motivated them to try as hard as they possibly could to protect her. It's what fuels their guilt over their "failure" to do so.

Lucas knows that he misses Max, and he knows that El does too, and that knowledge is enough.

It's enough for him to find more comfort in the girl who he met less than three years ago, than he does in the two boys he's known almost his entire life. The two boys he met long before the name Max first entered his minds.

Because they don't understand. They can't. Not the way El does.

I want Will to be selfish.

I want him to cling to Mike. to unapologetically grasp his arm, hold his hand, caress and kiss him.

I want him to take up Mike's time. to always be with him, to always be taking him places, hiding out alone and spending time together so much so that when asked "where's Mike" someone always answers "with Will".

I want him to be so verbal with his love that everyone in a fifty mile radius knows. for him to always be saying how much he cares, what he loves about Mike, why he loves Mike, just that he loves Mike, and I want him to be told just as much.

I want him to be Mike's constant, to always be by his side, to always be pressed against him, whispering to him, attached at the hip, two peas in a pod, the one who always knows, that if you were to find Will you'd find Mike and vice versa.

I want Will to be able to be so unfathomably and purely in love and never be afraid to show it because by god he deserves it.

Will Byers deserves to be selfish.

sometimes i just sit here and i get so sad just thinking about how mike called for will so often, but joyce always clogged up the line. he used to whine about not being able to reach will to dustin :( so mike thought will moved on from him, will probably "joined another party" and he no longer considers mike important enough to be his best friend because he never heard from will anymore either. it was always mike putting in the effort.

but then will is unaware that mike is almost always calling him when his mom is working. will, instead, always saw how el would receive a new letter from mike every few days, while he got nothing. so he thought mike was back to being how he was in the summer of 85. always thinking about el and forgetting about his friends... forgetting about his best friend. but he kept waiting to hear from mike, because will was scared that if he tries to contact him first, mike would just be annoyed by him and they'd probably break into a fight again. but he neither received a phone call nor a letter. and so he thought mike was no longer interested in being friends with him. will thinks mike probably still finds will too childish or immature.

except will doesn't know that mike joined the hellfire club to play d&d again. he's trying to reconnect with things that made him happy as a child because ever since will and el left hawkins, nothing makes sense in his life anymore. and will was one of the biggest reasons for his happiness back in the days. but not being able to reconnect with his best friend just meant that mike instead now spends all his time in his basement playing nintendo, hoping to turn back the clock to last summer and just play the campaign will came up with and somehow make that last forever.

and what mike doesn't know is that, despite not being in touch anymore, he is still what gives will the strength in his life. he is who will thinks about every day, he is who will is spending hours painting for. paintings that will always gifted mike. paintings that mike hung everywhere in his basement and his bedroom.

god, i usually hate the miscommunication trope but this one time it's just too excellent. not to mention how mike still does not know the true intention behind the painting. imagine when the truth all comes into the spotlight for both of them.

Literally all signs now point to “El deserves better”.

(this is kind of a companion post for my gifset about similar thing)

But first shortly about Will and Mike so it’s out of the way.  I don’t like the whole “Will deserves better” from people who think Mike only acts as an asshole and a jerk. He made mistakes but that’s not his whole personality.

And most importantly, because Will knows Mike, he’s known him for over a decade, he shares his interests, he understands him even if they fight. On top of that Mike does understand Will more than anyone else, except his family. He stayed by Will’s side the whole of s2, while not treating him like he would break, and Will noticed that. Will loves Mike for who Mike is.

While Mike could be open around Will during s4, even saying how he feels insecure with El.

But with El, Mike acts different, he becomes someone else, he hides his interests (Would El even know who Superman and Lois Lane are? Mike compares them to him and El, but talks about it to Will).

Especially when they start acting more towards the romantic side of the relationship, there’s a clear difference when they’re together vs when with other people. Like in 3x1 when Mike starts singing a song he likes, and asks El if she likes it, and she doesn’t get it, she’s surprised and pushes him (playfully) away.

Then, season 4 showed a lot more signs that El is noticing something is off about her and Mike’s relationship.

She lies to him in letters, and he can’t say what she wants and needs to hear.

They’re not shown talking about basically anything. Just like Hopper in s3 said, they just spend time alone all the time. and idk? kissing? not talking?

El kisses him in 3x8 thinking that her ‘I love you’ hoping he feels the same, but it’s the opposite - Mike is confused. He goes home acting weird (most likely realizing the feelings he should have for El he has for someone else), and then during the time away from them, he spends the time calling but not reaching Will, and writing to El only “From Mike”. He joins Hellfire and lets himself be a nerd and a freak. He’s finding himself.

Yet he feels inferior in his relationship with El, like El is something that must be always better than him, a superhero. (A superman.) But he doesn’t talk about that to her, but to Will. Because despite their disagreements, Will is still beside him, patient, kind and listening, just like he always was, and just like he always will be.

And El definitely starts to notice that she doesn’t get what she could from their relationship - the note on the flowers, the monologue that definitely was full of lies and she knows it.

She loves the idea of who Mike is around her, but he can’t be fully himself around her, so who does she love?

Even on the airport it’s confirmed he wore a fake outfit in her favorite colors, hiding behind sunglasses, putting on a fake persona for her.

The monologue that doesn’t work - doesn’t magically fix all her problems to gain advantage over Vecna. On the opposite - she loses, and she’s never lost like this before. She loses Max, someone who was real and kind to her, who helped her find her true self. 

Great example about the elmike relationship is the pizza place scene in 4x9.

Mike and El are joking and laughing together. The atmosphere is light and joyful. They’re laughing together like normal close friends.

Until El initiates the hand hold. This moment when she silently reaches for Mike’s hand to hold hers.

He awkwardly does as she asks, but it feels off? He’s not fully there, not fully giving himself to her, there’s something holding him back. And just like that the atmosphere changes - it’s tense, contrast to just seconds before.

They both are trying to think of the right words.

I still believe this was supposed to be their break up scene, but because Argyle interrupted them, and because probably the Duffers wanted to show just how weak their relationship in romantic context is (- the following monologue against Vecna not working), they couldn’t say what they wanted at that moment.

Along with the two day time skip that follows it’s clear that something has changed between them, and either we will see in s5 they did actually already break up (in the two day time skip?), or soon from the beginning in s5 they probably will.

In the end they both deserves better, because El needs someone who she can be honest with, as well who will truly accept her as she is.

And Mike deserves someone with whom he doesn’t have to hide any parts of himself, he deserves to be loved and appreciated for all the love he gives with his actions.

(These are just kind of my thoughts on when I see people keep saying that Will deserves better than Mike, or Mike and El are perfect together. So yeah, if milkvans (or even bylers who don’t like Mike) are saying as arguments that Will is the one who deserves better, they clearly haven’t been watching the same show.)
