Hey! I’m gonna be a physics major next year, and I was wondering if the Mac and iPad combo have worked well for you, or if there’s something else you recommend tech wise?

short answer: yes.

but, im gonna use this has an opportunity to yap about my current study set up. this goes without saying, but what worked for me may not work for you, and my set up evolved over the years as i found what was best for me.

i use an iPad for lecture notes and homework. i think its the most organized you can get them to be without straight up LaTeXing the shit out of them (and i know people who do exactly that, more power to them)

i just write faster than i type, and an ipad allows me to copy paste equations and add photos and stuff which is helpful for diagrams. i use goodnotes 5, and i will sing its praises till the end of time.

i think it pays to develop a clear style for your homework and lecture notes, bc your work will be easier to navigate. here's an example of my lecture notes and my homework.

HOWEVER, you will mostly be having paper exams as a physics student so i recommend you don't get too reliant on your iPad. i tend to do all my studying in notebooks, or loose sheets that i can refer to. practice problems are always on paper.

i started using legal pads for this from the end of junior year bc they're so convenient! im also incentivized by the stock our dept keeps in the mail room.

i have to do a lot of calculations for research and i prefer to do them on paper or a blackboard if it's something im reasoning out. idk it's so much easier to be stupid on paper than on goodnotes. ofc my research log is kept digitally, but i keep a binder with all my old calculations (both correct, and incorrect) along with my main reference papers.

LaTeX is a good skill to have which i didn't realise until too late. if you have to write any paper that's remotely scientific, LaTeX is the way to go. none of that google docs bs.

i use both vscode and Overleaf for editing. i mainly just LaTeX my finalized research calculations into one big doc. it's much easier to show my advisor. also it looks cool.

i got a monitor when my laptop screen broke sophomore spring (something inside me broke as well that semester it was so fun). and if you have the option, i would totally recommend getting one. it's useful having a second/bigger screen.

i use mine for a bunch of things: coding, reading textbooks, genshin impact, Netflix, grading.

on the topic of textbooks, i use digital bc im cheap. but i do buy secondhand physical copies that i rarely reference, but keep around bc it doesn't hurt to start your hypothetical professor office bookshelf early. i only buy the ones i actually respect, like Peskin's Intro to QFT. but the digital copies are usually much handier. i keep an extensive digital collection of books and papers i might never need.

don't be like me keep your digital library more organized!

and yeah circling back to electronics! i use a Macbook Pro rn which has served me well. i guess things are different if you need to run solidworks or other specialized software, but you can always use the lab computers, so that was never a problem. i have an apple ecosystem bc im a slut for capitalism.. i mean i was already halfway there and now im just really used to it, so i like all my devices being friends with each other. my tip is always get more RAM than you thought you needed, and double the storage. but maybe that's bc im mean to my laptop and love hoarding files.

i also keep all my previous notes and printouts so may be i have an academic hoarding problem in general.

in the end, a mix of old school and new age technology bs works best for me!

hi!! first of all, thank you so much for saying that — it really does mean a lot 🖤 and yeah, as someone who’s still kind of new to sharing my writing, i definitely get overwhelmed sometimes. but honestly? i love getting requests. it’s really cool to me that someone would take the time to think about a story and send it my way. because of that, i usually just go with whatever i have the most inspiration for in the moment — i never want to half-ass something. if someone cared enough to send it in, i want to care enough to do it justice. and honestly, people have been super understanding about that, which i'm really grateful for.

and since you asked, here’s some of the stuff sitting in my notes app right now:

part three of the life we built series : this picks up after reader and jack’s daughter is born — it’ll cover her first twelve months of life, but not in a montage-y way. i want it to really show how their lives change: the little things like jack falling asleep with her on his chest after night shifts, their first trip to the lake with her, the quiet moments where reader second-guesses herself as a mom and jack grounds her without even realizing he’s doing it. it’s going to be very domestic but layered too — lots of marriage dynamics, balancing work and family, seeing jack in this new phase of life without losing the parts of him that have always been there. i want every month to feel like its own chapter of growth, not just for their daughter but for their relationship too.

an addition to the handoff universe (pre-wedding story) : this will be set a few months before their wedding —it’ll probably revolve around some kind of high-stakes night at the hospital (a bad trauma case or a near miss), and how that forces them to confront everything they’ve been putting off talking about — fears, what it means to build a future together, whether they can survive the life they've both chosen. it’ll feel a little heavier than the life we built stuff — more about the growing pains of trying to have it all. i’m consciously not leaning into pregnancy here, since TLWB already covers that side of life. and the universes stay separate — accountant reader vs. attending reader 😭 different lives, different dynamics.

dad’s best friend jack abbot fic (potentially robby’s daughter) : this one’s still brewing, but i’m obsessed with the idea of setting it over fourth of july weekend. reader would have grown up around jack — years of cookouts, pool parties, firework shows — and now she’s grown, back home from college, and the tension’s impossible to ignore. jack’s trying to stay composed because of loyalty (to robby, to her dad, to whatever rules he thinks still apply), but the dynamic is all heat and bad timing. if i go with reader being robby’s daughter, it’ll add even more conflict: not just the age gap, not just the forbidden aspect, but the loyalty jack feels — and the way he starts to realize that loyalty is tearing him up inside. thinking major national anthem x lana del rey energy: reckless, indulgent, a little dangerous, and completely inevitable.

a jack abbot x all too well (10 min version) inspired one-shot : this isn’t going to be a direct retelling of the song, but i’m pulling hard from its structure — moments flashing by, small details that add up to heartbreak. it’ll be one of those fics where you feel the weight of time passing, even if the characters try to pretend it isn’t. probably a former relationship between reader and jack that fell apart because of timing, or choices he made that he thought were protecting her. i want it to be devastating in a quiet way — not loud fights, but all the little silences, the missed moments, the things they almost said. very lyrical, very slow-burn angst.

a one-shot based on girls / girls / boys by panic! at the disco : you, jack, and robby have always been close. too close. the kind of friendship that feels a little dangerous, a little too intimate when no one’s watching. it’s always been half a joke — the three of you piled onto the same barstool, robby slinging his arm around your shoulders like he owns you, jack sitting just a little too close, like he doesn’t trust robby not to do something stupid. you laugh it off. they laugh it off. but everyone feels it — that spark pulling tight between the three of you like a tripwire. the story would open on a night that starts like a thousand others: post-shift beers at some dive bar that should’ve been condemned years ago. the alcohol’s kicking in. the music’s too loud. the glances last a little too long. someone bumps your shoulder and jack’s hand is immediately on your lower back, steadying you — fingers lingering like he forgot he’s supposed to let go. and when robby notices, he doesn’t pull jack away. he grins. like he’s been waiting for this.

I will assume (tm) means 'tell me', and I will use this to my full advantage to ramble about my opinions to one of my fav drdt blogs

While I can't deny that you raise many good points about this, I'm more on the fence that David genuinely did care about Xander. I'm not high on copium or an avid Xanvid shipper in denial, but there is some legroom to believe that Xander was someone David did sincerely care about, despite being an easy puppet to manipulate for him. Or, at the very least, Xander was one of the very--VERY FEW--ppl that David did grow to like. David snapped at Teruko during the first investigation when she tried to impersonate Xander, and he didn't have stars in his eyes. David blushed--physically blushed--when Xander said they should be friends. A physical trait you cannot fake. He also didn't disrespect Xander when he was belittling the dead, and you'd think if he was playing the part of the 'big bad villian' he would say something along the lines of "Oh, Xander was so easy" or "He worshipped me, I had him eating right out of my hand", etc. Of course, Arei's nasty personality was an easy target for him to insult, and he wasn't even close with Min (might even still resent her for killing Xander). While ppl can't deny Xander was an easy target for David's manipulation (the whole "David told Xander to kill Teruko" theory looks a lot more promising), there is also some signs that point to him legitimately caring about Xander

Not only Xander, but I also think he cared about Arei as well. Going to get a little side tracked, but still on the topic of David caring about ppl. David also blushed when Arei hugged him and said that he was nice too. Which is weird, cause (now I'm getting even more side tracked) if, according to Ace's account, Arei knew David's secret right off the bat for 'oh so conveniently' looking over Whit's shoulder, why would she take the words of a manipulator to heart? Yes, she was having a breakdown and probably needed some comfort, even if she knew it was a lie and didn't care who it was from, but she still saved Eden from Arturo, which shows that she, in fact, did take David's words to heart and tried to change

But back on topic to David and Xander. Despite my pfp and me still loving David as a character, I'm not putting any bias onto David still caring for Xander. He's a manipulator and was saying lots of insults he can't take back during the trial. I am also one of those ppl who believe he's upping the ante on his personality atm, but I also can't deny there is some truth as to what he is saying (no matter how the secret is worded, it's flat out true). Xander was a great person before the killing game, making positive changes in the world and doing his best to be a good, upstanding guy. And this was someone who listened to David's speeches religiously. Makes me wonder if David's speeches turned ppl into individuals that turned out much like Xander, it makes me raise a brow as to the line "Everyone exist to be taken advantage of", when he's making ppl change for the better

Again, I can be completely wrong about this, and David could be Nikei 2.0 and is really a manipulative and lying sociopath and proud of it. But I feel like while there is room for speculation and believing he really didn't care about anyone there, there is also some things that point to the sign that he did. While David is an S tier liar now, no one can really deduce what's a lie or not, at this point. I'm not going to say there is a 'stark difference' between how he is acting now vs how he was acting when he thought he was all alone in the prologue, but we can certainly see his personality back then is much more toned down than the show he is putting up

Interesting thoughts, though I should probably clarify that (tm) was meant to mean ™, though I'm not sure tumblr lets you put that in tags and I was too lazy to find out.

You raise a lot of good points, though I was mostly being contrarian in my argument in the first place since I knew it was a less popular opinion, but it was one I didn't particularly care about one way or the other. I suppose it's just a matter of interpretation. Since making that post, I've been thinking about it more and more and have decided I am going to double down on my own thoughts with the justification that him blushing was a matter of being flustered and his exclusion of Xander in his ranting was a matter of saving time from a writing perspective, but again, I have nothing against a more favorable interpretation of his character.

(editing this to say I really hoping this doesn't come across rude or dismissive, I just don't have much more in terms of thoughts on the matter. It is what it is to me and honestly, as tumblr's #1 self appointed Teruko enjoyer, I'm just mostly interested in his future interactions with her and less focused on other previous character relationships)

I think if Goten and Trunks played Stardew together Trunks would try and min max their income but Goten would be a financial strain because he passes out in the mines and buys pizza which are 600g (my friend is a financial strain on our farm in the same way)

Oh Thank Heavens a good take on Goten & Trunks playing stardew valley in my inbox ON a monday night . HE WOULD DO THIS !

The only time it's reversed is when Goten tries to diligently save money to buy a heater for their chickens becasue it's getting cold out. And Trunks keeps blowing their money on MORE SEEDS!!!!!

Things Goten does and thinks and says

- "No dude just pass out it's a free ride back home just a few coins man it's nothing valuable"

- He sleeps in Trunks's house when his own cabin is too far away (and also when it's not) and that would be fine if it werent for the ongoing inside joke where if Trunks doesnt absolutely see him out then Goten will double back and steal something out of his house

- The time Goten blocked Trunks in his own house with furniture

- Goten spending all day fishing and returning with trash and trash and trash becasue he ate the fish while he was out so that he could fish for more trash

- Goten being reluctant to put his trash in the recycling machine becasue it "takes too long" and it's easier to just leave the trash in his chests or, better yet, toss it out of his inventory and into the farm water source

- With that being said Goten doesnt like pollution and so when it makes him too sad he just puts the trash in Trunks's chests.

- He picks Trunks's crops to be "helpful" and it messes up Trunks's methods and routines

- "Listen man. I LIVE on a farm. I know what I'm doing." VS Trunks's "I GREW UP playing video games. I KNOW what I'm doing."

- trunks perpetually has the sense that Goten doesnt QUITE know how to play the game, until suddenly Goten presents Trunks with the Wedding Ring, an item that Trunks himself barely knows about and that cost a LOT of time and resources.

They're playing at a long distance becasue Goten finally got the Nintendo Switch to work on his geriatric and idiosyncratic TV and he doesnt want to move the switch and fuck it all up, so hes on a voice chat with Trunks. And Goten spent a LONG time on this gambit, he KNOWS that Trunks thinks that Goten is bad at this game, and he maintained that ruse and hid his knowledge about the ring so that it would be a surprise. Until they finally finally FINALLY had the man-hours and resources in for him to pop the question.

And Trunks barely knows about this item and it dawns on him that Goten knew something practical about the game that he didnt and he remembers only vaguely reading something abt the function of being able to marry other players and how the item was expensive and he didnt care much then. But hes on a voice chat with Goten and they were gonna go mining on Fern Island in the volcano and hes all stacked out and Goten was like "Hey you forgot your ring" and Trunks checked his inventory and was like "Nah I got both of them" and Goten was like "No you forgot this one." And then proposed on stardew valley and now Ttunks is sitting here staring at the screen slowly processing that Goten had flexed his whimsy once again

Theres a pause and Goten says "will you marry me dude" to make it real and from Goten's POV he cant see Trunks sit there and process it becasue they're playing at their own homes so from his POV theres just a loooong silence and then the dutiful sound effect of the item being accepted.

And they both literally had been talking about marrying other townspeople but the gambit was too impressive and Goten knew the risk of presenting it .. He knew that there was a 50% chance that Trunks would accept it and that they would both be stuck with this. And well. Here we are

They silently wed and that's that...

- Goten keeps cooking all the food items out of the fridge indiscriminately so theres never anything useful in the fridge. And whenever they go mining together Trunks keeps seeing Goten eating random and lavish dishes and desserts and it makes no sense becasue you're meant to go into the mines with a mostly empty inventory and clearly Goten is not doing that. Trunks has a stack of gold star cheeses to keep him going meanwhile hes hearing Goten say "hold on I gotta heal up" and put away an entire chocolate cake or "hold on I gotta clear up inventory space" and then he just eats random dishes like Autumn's Bounty and Fried Eggplant like WHAT ? Hes throwing back Seafoam Pudding in SKULL CAVERN ! He's popping a raw Super Cucumber becasue he felt a whee bit peckish while cutting down trees. WHY IS HE CARRYING A STACK OF FISH CAKES ? Why is he packing artichoke dip?? Why is he offering Trunks a Cranberry Candy as a celebration treat for breaking their depth record in the mines? Trunks accepts it of course.

- Goten loves the berry seasons. He loves picking that shit

- Basically Trunks is trying to be filthy rich while Goten is just trying to have fun and chill out

As someone who also made the transition from academia to industry, do you have any tips or advice on how to handle the different expectations? Thank you!

Hello Rose! Congratulations!! That’s so wonderful to hear. You’ve worked hard for this!

I’m very much still in the process of learning to navigate the transition myself but I will tell you all that I’ve learned so far. I’ve found that grad school has actually prepared me quite well for industry because of all the translatable skills I picked up (and even from college and other life experiences). So if you find this list is filled with some familiar things, then that’s a very good sign!

Have a method to deal with feeling overwhelmed. Going from academia to industry can feel like moving from a small rural town where you knew everybody to a big bustling loud crowded city. Oftentimes it will be sensory and information overload, and it’s easy to feel anxious most of the time. It’s best to have in your emotional tool-kit a few plans on how to navigate challenges like figuring out unfamiliar protocols and tasks, what to do if you make a mistake, how to decompress after an anxiety-inducing phone call or presentation, etc. 

I recommend not forming any emotional attachment to your projects, because unlike grad school where we worked on basically one big thing for many years, projects can come and go very quickly and seemingly unexpectedly in industry. And most of the time these decisions are not 100% up to us in R&D, but the business side of things, because if a project isn’t meeting a company goal (whether financial or otherwise), it’ll be put on hold or cut. (But that’s not to say R&D doesn’t have input, but we don’t often get the last say). 

Know your go-to person or persons for questions, from your manager and fellow coworkers for project-related questions to contacts in IT, HR, etc. And be protective of your right to ask questions and receive answers. This is part of your job, and this is part of their job as well. Everything that comes out of your department is a team-effort, after all. And time is money (and company goals fulfilled)--always remember that. And that includes your time as well, so taking 5 min to ask a question and getting a straight-forward answer is much better than spending 5 hours confused and doing something wrong! Not a day goes by where I don’t ask a bunch of questions (and most of them are: what does this abbreviation stand for? Because in industry, apparently if it can be abbreviated, it will be.)

Set clear expectations and goals with your manager, and check in with them regularly. Project goals are much more concrete and common in industry where project timelines (sometimes set by the business side) guide every decision, vs academia where decisions can be more experimental and free-flowing. Finding out your pace in this timeline and delivering what your manager expects is a two-way street where communication is key. Whenever I get a new project, I like to tell my manager “let’s touch base on my progress tomorrow” so we can a) catch any of my mistakes early, b) estimate when I’ll be done/ready for the next step, and based on that, c) see if we need to have more help. 

Follow what your fellow coworkers do in terms of small workplace-culture-things, like email etiquette (eg. reply to one vs reply all), when to start and end each work-day, how to respond to manager requests (my team likes each of us to reply with “ok will do!”), the best way to communicate (we prefer instant messaging via slack), etc.

Stay organized and prepared. Time is money in industry, and staying organized and on top of things saves time (and thus money). I’ve also found that it’s always better (and expected) to be able to provide an immediate answer to questions during meetings, rather than “I’ll get back to you” (unless it really is something that’ll take a while to figure out). So have your notes ready and well-organized. 

Related, document everything, or at least know the reason behind your decisions. Mostly because you may be working in a very large and interdisciplinary team (think sales, operations, marketing, etc) and they may not have the science-know-how to understand some R&D choices. Also higher-ups may not be able to remember every minute detail of a project, so it’s good to have all that on hand. The other day my manager actually asked me to remind her of the decisions we made during a meeting on one of her projects. Good thing I had taken notes!

Take the opportunity to learn who everyone is and what they do at the company that you meet. Company directories and LinkedIn profiles are great for this. 

Pay attention to the paperwork. Companies run on rules and regulations and contracts and legal this and that. Our choices can have more consequences now than when we were in school. I usually like to get 2nd and 3rd opinions on things (either from coworkers or from a more experienced friend or family member) that I’m not 100% sure on. 

Be prepared to have more trust placed in you and your decisions. Not really a huge piece of advice, but more like, hey, head’s up! Because one thing that was jarring for me as someone coming straight from grad school where our self-esteem was repeatedly pummeled down was how much more respected I am now. My feedback and project decisions are actually welcomed, trusted, and acted upon. This is in part to my degree, my experience, and the culture of my team, but wow, I haven’t felt this valued in such long time. 

Related to that last point, professionalism counts more now. Academia offers a bit more freedom in terms of how an individual dresses and acts, but company environments put more emphasis and expectations in those things (especially for customer/client-facing positions). Depending on your company, you may have a dress-code and be held to a certain level of professional etiquette. 

And lastly, take it slow, and trust that effort will never betray you. The learning curve can also be pretty steep--my coworker tells me that it’s at least 6 months for my position. I like to finish each work day by reflecting on something I now know that I didn’t when I woke up that morning--it really helps keep my self-esteem up and the feelings of imposter syndrome down.

Have you done angels vs demons before? That sounds super cool and interesting! If you have though, then maybe which sort them by holidays they obsess over?

I have not done angels and demons although I do want to, as of right now there is no angels-and-demons in my inbox, but I predict that there probably will be, and I really like the idea of the holidays.

The holidays that I am sorting: Christmas, Halloween, new years, and birthdays.

I think they all would go nuts over pride month, and would definitely celebrate other months and days like National autism awareness day, and Mental health month, and yeah.

Gryffindor would go nuts over Christmas.

They don't particularly care about it in the Christian sense, aka they don't care that it's Christmas, but they do love the holidays and all the traditions that go with Christmas, as well as the spirit of hope and that fuzzy feeling that comes with it. 

THEY WILL GO NUTS

They want to start immediately after Halloween, but Ravenclaw (who also loves the holidays, but why in early November?) makes them wait until the day after Thanksgiving.

But when you go to sleep that Thursday.., you wake up to a completely different Hogwarts

They put up Christmas lights EVERYWHERE. 

Mistletoe, coca stands, holly, bells, streamers, they bribe Hufflepuff to bake.

The tree is up (but not decorated)

And it’s not the magic of Hogwarts (well partly) But it's Gryffindor, who stays up the entire night with Hufflepuff and Hagrid and they spend the entire night setting up everything for Christmas. 

By the time you wake up, every single aspect or possible decoration for Christmas is up. (Yet there are somehow still some things to set up, and Gryffindor gets other students to join them) There is Christmas music playing, the whole place smells of pine and cookies and sweets, It's ALWAYS snowing, and everyone wakes up with their favorite sweet next to their bed. 

Hufflepuff is OBSESSED with birthdays.

They have a list of every students’ birthdays, what they like and who they like

It’s magic so it updates

But they talk to the person first to make a profile

They will go ALL OUT

They will decorate your bed and the area around it, and make sure your favorite foods are served for you and other people who also have the same birthday

Unless you truly don't want anything for your birthday, or you don't want your favorite food served (say it's like your mother’s homemade XYZ, and you like it served from her, or there is an aspect that you don't want to share)

Then the list will update, but Hufflepuff still tries to make your day good.

Hufflepuff loves to bake, and make stuff, so they will reel in Ravenclaw and they will work together with the person’s friends to plan a surprise party (if the person likes them)

I can’t think of a particular holiday that Ravenclaw would go crazy over

I feel like they would be the person who would be eating breakfast and be like:

“Oh did you know that today is _______ day?”

And then they would tell you a bunch of facts about it

They would definitely participate in all of the holidays, but like every five mins they would say some fun- or depending on how popular the holiday is- not-so-fun fact about the holiday

I feel like they would have fun planning parties and stuff

They would also have existential crises the night before their birthday, and new years eve.

They will tutor some students before breaks to make sure they don't have to work over break to turn stuff in.

You can always see them taste testing for Hufflepuff, and/or drinking coffee/coca while eating insane amounts of whipped cream.

Slytherin will start Halloween prep in AUGUST

One of the reasons Gryffindor can't start the holidays after Halloween is bc Slytherin is in mourning

They will decorate the entire castle

They hire Hufflepuff's baking skills and skills with detail to help decorate, as well as Ravenclaw to calculate sh*t (like the correct position to put X to get the desired effect and sh*t)

Gryffindor is the person they scare the f*ck out of.

They will decorate it on a scale of fun, and cartoony, to holy-sh*t-is-that-real-blood depending on the person. 

Like full-on horror house for some

And like spooky scary skeletons playing in the background with cute costumes and streamers and cartoony pumpkins everywhere. 

But like the horror house isn't the entire month or so, it's just you go to sleep listening to a faint “this is Halloween” and wake up to the screams of your fallen comrades.

But only for the people who sign up, and its varying levels of scary for how much that person can handle

Also, it might start later, give you some time to wake up

Anyways they will only stop mourning one you give them a pumpkin spiced latte or smth.

i see a lot of 13 yr olds on tumblr these days, so id like to share some advice i wish i had known using tumblr at age 13.

this is also probably not an original idea from me lol, someone has got to have done this before. i would usually put this under a cut but ive decided not to for now

be aware that this site is like NOTORIOUSLY harmful. you may think you’re above it or too mature for it to hurt you, but trust me, you aren’t. since you will probably not be stopped by that warning, maybe take some precautions/keep some stuff in mind to stay safe.

i had tumblr savior for my first experiences with the site. im pretty sure it still works and it’s regularly updated, so take a look into that. it blocks posts with certain keywords from being seen on your radar, and can also push/allow posts with other keywords to always be shown. i would advise getting it or a similar extension to custom block triggering/harmful content.

don’t put other/more popular users in your fandom/community on a pedestal. they’re people behind a blog, just like you are. don’t feel intimidated by the people in your own community, they are just people the same way you are a person. they can mess up at times, and so can you.

making friends is a great thing on this site, but keep an eye on new online friends’ behaviors. it is exciting to meet new people, but you want to be aware of toxic friends. same goes for your mutuals. overall, keep people on this site at an arm’s length until you’ve gotten to know them enough personally to know that they’re genuine people. as you get older you can relax on this, but as a young teen it’s better to be hyperaware than to be blissfully ignorant as you get hurt.

onto more broad things, your theme doesn’t have to be perfect. you dont have to make a custom html/edited html website theme for your blog, you can leave it as tumblr default. if you enjoy organizing that, then by all means go ahead! but don’t feel like it is necessary for your blog, most of the time you will get a new theme set up and check on it on a month and find that it actually looks terrible to you. if you’d rather just have it as a basic/default site, then that is perfectly normal.

your blog’s theme/topic is your choice, and can be uniquely you. some people have many blogs for many things, just a few, or just one with everything. it is up to you how you want to do it! the themes you choose, topics, are up to you. fads and trends are cool but finding what works for you personally is way more fun. your blog is supposed to be fun. you are supposed to enjoy using tumblr. don’t compromise that for a trend. make your blog(s) however you want, however it pleases you. it can feel pressuring to have a perfect blog, but it’s better to just make your appearance the way it would make you happy.

also, tag systems are awesome! but they are not necessary unless you’re tagging trigger warnings. always tag those! but i know a lot of people have personal tagging systems to organize their blog, which is totally cool! but again, personal tag systems are not necessary, and if they feel unnecessary to you, don’t use them. but again, tag triggering content, especially if you are asked to.

archiving/deleting/creating new blogs is a whole other process. some people like to start with a clean slate every time they switch to a new fandom, and let their old user be archived or deleted. this is perfectly respectable (and probably the right thing to do) personally, i just switch my blog over to whatever im feeling that month and people can unfollow if they no longer enjoy my blog (i dont have that big of a following on this blog). it’s really a personal decision, and if you want to restart your blog you will know when to/if you want to.

reblog art, but never “repost” it. aka dont take the image and post it on your own blog, just reblog it from the original poster. its common sense but not everyone knows? idk

if you end up having some or many followers, make sure to check yourself. appreciate your followers, respect them. they are people with blogs. just like you. don’t let a high number inflate your ego way out of proportion, it’s easy to fall into that sense of power.

respect people’s pronouns. even if you for some reason have a disagreement with them, or you don’t understand why/how their identity works, just use the correct pronouns that they ask you to. it costs you zero dollars and zero cents, and is incredibly respectful

as a young teen, don’t get involved/let yourself get buried in tumblr-wide discourse. examples of this include the bi vs pan debate, flag discourse etc. most ppl who i know who were attentive to things similar to that at a young age ended up being affected negatively by it. pay some attention to what pertains to you and also pay attention to what you can identify as right or wrong, but don’t let people’s opinions on your dash influence you in times of discourse. go and look at both sides of those kinds of debates if you’re interested, and form an opinion from there.

speaking of which, sometimes people will just post their takes on literally anything and youll come across it. take everything with a grain of salt unless there is links to proof (if applicable, not always needed). sometimes bad takes just havent had someone to reblog and disprove yet.

speaking of discourse, there is always discourse on this site in every fandom, every community. form your own opinions always, but keep your moral compass in mind. don’t compromise your morals and sense of right and wrong to enjoy certain fan-media. if something seems off, it probably is.

people make mistakes, and if someone did something kind of shitty/had a terrible take/belief (not irredemably shitty, those ppl do not need ur attention) and they genuinely apologize for the shit they did and learn from it, move on. leave some shit in the past, holding grudges isnt good for your mental health and people change. but again, always take things with a grain of salt.

you dont need a high follower count to get traction on your posts. it might help, but you can have a low follower count with high interaction or a high follower count with little to know interaction. the best advice i have is to tag what it is relevant to, whether it’s a fandom, aesthetic, etc and people who regularly check those tags will find it.

if you ever get anon hate for some reason, just delete it from ur inbox n move on. ppl who send anon hate want to see you post it and respond to it. if they said some really really MEAN shit though, it may be best to talk to a friend about it for comfort, or take a break from tumblr for a hot min. most importantly, report it, close your ask box/change it to no anonymous asks.

if at some point you choose to voice your opinion about a highly debated topic at the time, be aware that people who disagree might attack you for it. be aware, and be safe about it.

a lot of people swear by xkit. i have never used it in my life, but from the looks of it, it makes using tumblr so much more bearable. it breaks sometimes with tumblr updates, but apparently it’s worth it. again, look into it, but it’s not necessary to use the site.

do niche shit. start sideblogs without a plan in mind. make aus, make art, make writing, or make nothing at all. reblog the things you love wherever you want them to be reblogged. comment on people’s creations if you love them, they probably would love to hear how much you enjoyed it. appreciate how wonderful the better part of this site is, enjoy the free access to view and appreciate others’ creations and ideas.

FAQ regarding undergrad research

I thought I’d put this together because I remember when I was an undergrad looking for research opportunities I literally had no idea what to do or expect! So I hope this will help :)

Disclaimer: Some of these answers may only apply to undergraduate research opportunities in the life sciences in US universities that conduct research. 

How can I find a list of potential principal investigators (PIs)? 

You can search the department or research facility’s website for a list of research topics and PIs. Oftentimes there will be a description of the research and/or PI, or even a link to their own lab webpage. 

Do the PIs have to be professors I’ve had classes with before?

Nope! There are lots of PIs who don’t teach undergraduate courses, but they still have their own labs. Unless specifically stated by the PI, being a student in one of their courses is not an automatic requirement. 

How do I get started contacting them?

Send an email. I have a template you can use here. If you don’t hear back within a week, feel free to send a follow-up email (by forwarding your original email so the info is still there). PIs are busy people, so it might take them a while!

What year in college can I start looking for research opportunities?

As early as freshman year. Honestly, coming in with lab experience is not important for undergrad researchers; labs would rather have someone that can stick around for a long time. Training a freshman vs training a senior sometimes takes the same time (as lab techniques can be highly specialized that most college lab courses don’t cover), but a freshman is going to generate more data than a senior. In fact, many labs won’t take seniors for that reason, so start early!

But I’m a senior! What do I do?

Never fear, continue to contact labs! I would recommend focusing on PIs who know you and your work ethic (so a professor whose class you took and did well in), as they’re more likely to make an exception. I didn’t start looking for undergrad research until my senior year too, but a professor I took many classes with and did great in knew me well enough to let me join the lab, even though it was literally for just 1 semester. So it’s not impossible! 

What factors into a PI accepting/not accepting an undergraduate researcher?

A lot: funding, space, # of projects, availability of mentors, to name a few. Therefore, if a PI can not accept you this semester, don’t feel too down! There are many factors that come into play, and so much is out of your control.

Can I get paid or earn course credit for my time in the lab?

Sure! It depends on the PI, but some PIs may pay undergrads over the summer, or hire them as part-time techs. There are also undergrad fellowships/scholarships that can apply to lab research, as well as work study opportunities. You can also earn course credit for your time (just check with your advisor). Usually it’s 2 hours per credit, up to 3 or 4 credits per semester. These are things you can discuss with your PI during your interview.

How many hours/week am I expected to be in lab?

As many as you can give. Ideally, a continuous chunk of time is more useful; you’ll get more done by being in the lab for 2 hours straight than 30 min here and 30 min there. I personally like undergrads to be here at least 2 hours at a time for a minimum of 4 hours/week. If you want your own project, aim for 10 hours/week. But of course this is all dependent on your lab, the type of research you’re doing, and your own schedule. 

Will I be given an independent project right off the bat?

You will most likely be taken under the wing of someone in the lab (like a grad student, lab tech, postdoc, even another undergrad) to first help with their project and to learn research techniques. So don’t worry, you’ll be guided every step of the way! A lab will never just “throw you to the wolves” as that’s not beneficial for anyone. Then after you have a good amount of training under your belt, you and your mentor will see what kinds of independent projects you can take on (and many factors go into that, including how many hours/week you can be in the lab, etc). 

What do I do if after a few weeks, I decide I really don’t want to work in a particular lab anymore?

Please don’t hurt yourself by staying in a situation you don’t feel comfortable in (either mentally, emotionally, or physically). Meet with the PI privately and explain that you don’t feel like the lab is a good fit for you, and you would like to leave (maybe give a week’s notice so you can wrap some stuff up). You won’t hurt any feelings or burn any bridges if the exit is done politely. You have every right to do what’s best for you!

Will I have opportunities to be an author on a paper or give poster presentations at meetings?

Absolutely. It depends on your lab and project, but undergrads definitely have opportunities to be listed as a contributing author if their work is in the paper, and there are lots of poster sessions for students (your university may host a few themselves!). Chat with your mentor about these opportunities if this is something you’re interested in. 

How much research experience (including undergrad research) do employers/internships/graduate schools look for in a competitive candidate? 

At least 1 year. 

Are undergraduate research opportunities only limited to my university?

Nope! You can find opportunities (both paid and volunteer) at other research institutions in your area. Some may be specialized programs for undergrads that involve a competitive application process (and perhaps a great stipend too!)

I'll link my post on this topic here. same answer: unless you have a strong reason to put off applying (like a post-highschool academic program, outreach, job) i would apply before boards. universities don't really put balance breaking weight on your boards; more on what you did throughout high school.
