I gotta say I think this is an oversimplification. I don't know how much input Iwata had in terms of the Wii U's development / design, but a CEO does not typically work on the ground floor once they're in that position. They're a company and companies only care about the bottom line. The reason they market themselves as being compassionate is because it has appeal and makes consumers believe they're your friends. My Disney of videogames comparison wasn't just about revenue, but the surface level "friendly" image the company exploits to their advantage. For the gamecube and N64, their unwillingness to switch to standard DVDs bit them in the ass twice. If it were truly for audeince benefit, then they'd have realized how much more developers could push their games to be better when alloted better processing power. For the gamecube specifically, miniDVDs are just cheaper and far more difficult to make copies of (and thus harder to bootleg/pirate). The PS2 on the other hand doubled as a DVD player in a time where DVD players were notoriously expensive, which you could argue is far more consumer friendly than what Nintendo settled on. They were just being cheap, at the end of the day.

In my additional reblog I said Nintendo needs to have another Wii U, and what I mean is the Wii U had similar pitfalls in the sense that costs were offloaded onto the consumer. It retailed at $299 in 2012 which equates to $415 with inflation — most of that coming from the gamepad. The gamepad was also notoriously difficult to replace alongside having so many other additional components to worry about, and in my case, mine had issues mere months after release. The difference between the Wii U and Switch 2 is, with the latter, Nintendo knows exactly which market it wants to appeal to. They're not willing to dig in their heels about poor innovation decisions anymore, and we can see this with them essentially just... making the Switch 2. The Switch 1 still took the bits of the Wii U and redesigned it, settling on something that would have been the obvious on first attempt had they not, you know, wanted to make the Wii 2.

They realized they don't have to fit that affordable market gap anymore to make a profit, Microsoft basically gave up on the Xbox and Sony dug its own grave big time
