i am reading a recently-published history of the New Romantics by dylan jones (Sweet Dreams - this thing is a TOME. 1700 pages, okay?) and

i am only in the beginning chapters and having to google uk stylistic terms bc when i say we are getting into the *minutiae* i am not exaggerating even slightly

but ANYWAY i highly recommend if you care at all about late 70s/early 80s pop music style and influence just for the music coverage writing. it has been SO long since i've read this specific kind of lyrical, metaphorically bombastic, sharply excessive prose, that flashy nme qua rolling stone type of description and rhetoric that i grew up on and love and *rarely* see these days. i hadn't realized i missed it so much

Currently reading: thick as thieves by Megan Whalen Turner (audiobook) and a house with good bones by t kingfisher (with my eyes). I'm also doing an audiobook reread of the lymond chronicles, which I highly recommend (both the books and the narrator) - but I just finished queen's play and haven't started the disorderly knights yet.

Last song: I haven't been listening to a lot of music lately but I did play beat saber last night on my flatmate's vr headset, I think the last song was rave in the grave by aronchupa - not my usual style but it has a very good map

Last series: I got about half way through a rewatch of nirvana in fire recently and then got distracted by something and haven't touched it in a month or so

I care little for best seller lists and book reviews, I fail to watch PBS, to listen to NPR, to read The New Yorker, not to mention mainland newspapers. Indeed I am embarrassingly out of touch with what is popular in the book world. I have a strong musical voice that lends itself to whispering on occasion but for which the daily imperative is a prison. My most glaring deficiency is that I am not detail-oriented, although I lied unwittingly during my preliminary interview and described myself as such. In truth, before being initiated into that Mansion of Minutia, I had no idea the true meaning of the phrase. Today was the birthday of Freddie Reign(celebrated) and the fandom laughed nervously at the greatest hits and missteps of the debacle so far while pacing the ramparts biting our nails and waiting to find out, are they gonna drop the bomb or not? What actually happened as of press time, pretty much the same thing as last year but with added weirdness from the Clark/Jungwirth clan. With the eyes of the fandom fixed unblinking on them today the Jungwirth family, perhaps emulating their beloved Trump, continued to behave erratically and unprofessionally on social media, deleting pictures of the child and each other. Some old pics of the child were posted, but even in those he looks, uh, mature for a three year old, there were no pics from today, no-one tagged his theoretical mother in anything, and that was that for them. From the Tomlinson clan, a couple of Louis' sisters made cursory nods towards the occasion at press friendly times.

Louis himself, while blessedly quiet on this subject, just like last year, did respond to a Syco tweet about the TV judge award which people were Not Happy to see and thought wasn't him tweeting (because Syco) but here's your annoyingly optimistic take- that tweet drew attention to something that wasn't really made clear before which is that he's running against SIMON; previously fairly indifferent, I was suddenly filled with a burning desire to see him win, and finding it very easy to believe he does actually care about this contest. Not to mention having the same effect as last year's tweet which is to say, "I'm around, I'm tweeting... But not about That."

Niall kindly popped up to take the focus off the tension of the day by answering about a gazillion tweets over his breakfast about whatever random thing people said to or about him. He was charming and funny and flawlessly executed his usual magical hat trick of seeming to be completely open and willing to tell us anything while remaining perhaps the most opaque and secretive member of the band which is, you know, really saying something. Some highlights- he reminded us that he has a new song out Fri, and that he's working away on NH2, wbk but still it's very exciting! He tells us NH2 will be "fun and sad" which sounds like about every day around here so cool cool, we're ready (spoiler, we're probably not ready.) He said yes to more merch socks! He dished about skincare and implied that he needed to lose weight(??!?!??) like the model™ he is, and when asked about a collab with Shawn he said they were going to try and then Shawn said, there is no try "we ARE going to" and then NIALL said, "let's do it then" and that my friends is what they call giving the people what they want!

I don't know what Arknight is but you have me interested.

Oh boy, my fangirling is paying off! Okay, I'll try to explain without doing one of my usual essays, and to my best understanding (since I only started a few months ago and I'm not caught up on every story sequence)!

So, Arknights is a mobile game available on the app store, Android store, and can be emulated on things like Bluestacks etc. If I were to boil it down to its basest basest components, it would be "War and Peace with furries" but it's SO much more than that. The setting is in an alternate Earth called Terra, and the main crux of the conflicts in the world is the divide between the Infected and the Uninfected. The Infected are afflicted with this little understood thing called Oripathy, and it's very dangerous. Even when an Infected dies their corpses are still capable of infecting others, so there is a huge segregation among the peoples of the various nations and the treatment of the Infected by these countries range from dismissive to... well. Anyway! You play the part of The Doctor (no, not that one... maybe), who in the story is an established trusted professional but when you start the game you're amnesiac so you're relearning all this stuff in-character. You work with Rhodes Island, a pharmaceutical company that is intent on fighting for equality between Infected and Uninfected. They help develop medicine, distribute it, and champion the civil rights of the Infected. Many of Rhodes Island's own Operators are in fact Infected, so you can see how that might be of interest to them. The problem is, ALMOST NOBODY in a position of power agrees with your mission statement, so that obviously Poses Problems.

There's a lot more minutiae to it, a beautiful amount of philosophy and emotion driven writing, and lot of the event stories, and side stories, delve into a lot more of the characters that are a regular fixture at Rhodes Island. The most recent event, Near Light, which you probably saw me fangirl about in the Most Lesbian Way Ever, focused on how the treatment of the Infected shows in the sports entertainment realm of one of the nations, among other things. It is a VERY FASCINATING game for someone of a literary and analytical mind, BUT it's also a gacha so if you just like looking at and collecting pretty furries you're still in for a great time. It has a lot to offer, and I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend anyone interested to try it out. It does get text heavy, but trust me the story that they weave and the interlocking elements are just so great to see come together.

Aaaaaaaaaaaand I wrote an essay. Of course I did. Sorry, I hope this gives you some manner of insight into the game that is taking over my mind more and more with each passing day!

EDIT TO ADD legitimately one of the best parts of the game is that unlike many other gacha, EVERYONE IS NOT IN LOVE WITH YOU. There is degrees of respect from most of the Operators, a small handful have a crush on you (Gravel comes to mind, I don't know any others but I'm leaving space open in case there are more) and some, either due to the circumstances or due to whatever past you no longer know, Are Not Here For You. I LOVE IT. ALSO ALSO! Ok But What Is Hera: To Catch a Star Even About?

Hera: To Catch a Star -- releasing in early 2023

I'm going to try to share as much as I can without spoiling the story...

The Plot

Rynn Hera discovers he is the forbidden offspring of a celestial goddess and a mortal. As a result of this, he is in great danger and is pursued throughout the galaxy, for his blood makes him more powerful than he realizes. The first two novels chronicle Rynn’s travels with a brooding stranger, a kind but determined celestial priestess, and a witty space pirate/outlaw who is quite literally wanted by basically everyone in the galaxy.

The Characters

I haven’t really introduced any of my characters on here yet because I plan on doing so closer to the release of TCAS (To Catch a Star) but the main character is:

Rynn Hera. He’s a literal child. Lives in a cottage in the woods with his grandfather. Loves anything covered in sugar (three words: honey glazed rolls). Is he a cinnamon roll? A downright crybaby? I’ll let you decide for yourself.

The Trilogy

There are three novels in the Hera trilogy: To Catch a Star being the first.

As the series progresses, the plot gradually becomes more complex and weaves more characters and subplots into the main story, which is Rynn’s journey (both literally and emotionally) as the forbidden celestial child, son of a goddess and a mortal. In the end, a massive war birthed from religious and political conflicts is on the brink of breaking out, complicated by the existence of the celestial child and his powerful blood.

The Aesthetic/Mood

This is just a little sample of the moods across the trilogy, so it’ll vary based on novel.

Over the summer I read a novel I just learned about, called “Whose Names are Unknown,” by Sanora Babb. The novel is based on some of Babb’s early childhood experiences and extensive work she did helping people in California’s migrant labor camps during the Dust Bowl and Depression of the 1930s for the government’s Farm Security Administration (FSA). 

In 1939 she completed “Whose Names are Unknown” but her publisher, who had initially been enthusiastic and given her an advance, declined to publish it. George Steinbeck, already a successful author, had just published “The Grapes of Wrath,” and it jumped immediately to the top of the bestseller list. The publisher felt another book on the same topic would be, in his words, “anticlimatic.” Babb’s novel wasn’t published until 2004, when she was 97 years old.

But Steinbeck’s novel owes a debt to Sanora Babb. Steinbeck began research in 1936 for articles that would eventually prompt him to write “The Grapes of Wrath,” visiting migrant labor camps that housed Midwestern Dust Bowl refugees. One of these camps was Weedpatch, near Bakersfield, California. Steinbeck befriended the camp’s administrator, Tom Collins. Collins helped Steinbeck’s research by giving him copies of detailed reports he and other FSA workers compiled about the people and conditions in the camp for the FSA. 

One of the people who helped write these reports was Sanora Babb, who worked at Weedpatch, and was also friends with Tom Collins. Babb even briefly met Steinbeck twice.

The amount and type of Babb’s notes that Collins gave Steinbeck seems unclear. Did Babb give Collins personal, private notes she might have kept as part of her writing process? Or did Collins only have access to the notes she took for the official FSA reports? Regardless, Steinbeck had access to at least some of Babb’s observations to inform development of his novel.

Some have accused Steinbeck of stealing her work and publishing it as his own and of not doing his own research. This idea appears to be based largely on a blog post that makes some assertions without offering any evidence. 

The executor of Babb’s literary estate said, “We have no proof that Steinbeck used her notes. We know her notes were given to him, but we don't know whether it was in the form of a FSA report of not. If that's the case, he wouldn't have known they came from her specifically. So we can't know to what degree he used her notes, or didn't, but at the end of the day, she was in the fields working with the migrants. She was the one doing that."

Writing in The Steinbeck Review, Michael J. Meyer noted numerous "obvious similarities" between the two novels "that even a cursory reading will reveal", such as Babb's account of two still-born babies, mirrored in Steinbeck's description of Rosasharn's baby. Among other scenes and themes repeated in both books: the villainy of banks, corporations, and company stores that charge exorbitant prices; the rejection of religion and the embrace of music as a means of preserving hope; descriptions of the fecundity of nature and agriculture, and the contrast with the impoverishment of the migrants; and the disparity between those willing to extend assistance to the migrants and others who view "Okies" as subhuman. Meyer, a Steinbeck bibliographer, stops short of labeling these parallels as plagiarism but concludes that "Steinbeck scholars would do well to read Babb — if only to see for themselves the echoes of Grapes that abound in her prose." I would say, however, that these similarities probably have more to do with the leftist, even socialist politics both writers espoused. Both were members of communist organizations at one point and both were strong supporters of labor activism and unions. Moreover, villainous banks, corporations, and company stores were, in fact, the cause of so many people’s poverty during the Depression and during the Dust Bowl. Clear-eyed, left-leaning writers like Babb and Steinbeck would certainly have elevated this fact in their fiction. Contrasting fecund nature/impoverished humanity, and disdain/kindness toward “Okies” seem to me like pretty obvious choices when writing about a human-made natural disaster (the Dust Bowl) and with a desire to humanize and generate sympathy toward both the victims of the disaster and toward the union movement. There is also a stillborn baby in both books, described in similar ways. That could, indeed have been something Steinbeck took from the FSA notes, as it is something he is unlikely to have witnessed himself. However, stillborn babies must have been pretty common in the FSA camps. Even this detail can’t be pinned directly to Babb’s notes, though it is suspicious.

In spite of these similarities, “Whose Names are Unknown” is very different from “The Grapes of Wrath.” Babb’s book explores the lives of her characters in ethnographic detail and portrays their lives and struggles with profound empathy and realism. It is clearly the work of someone intimately acquainted with the people and their moral universe, as well as the exacting minutiae of everyday life. Babb writes like an anthropologist, which is something I love about the book.

In “The Grapes of Wrath,” I think (and I am no Steinbeck scholar, heck haven’t even read the book since high school) Steinbeck was more concerned with creating a myth or grand narrative that encapsulated all of the good and bad aspects of America than he was with ethnographic truth. It has drama, good and evil, memorably flawed characters, and, importantly, an epic road trip that probably helped spawn the “road trip” genre of writing. It’s a book with many layers of meaning and emotional resonance. You don’t learn as much about the characters’ world and worldview as in Babb’s book, but you feel so much more and are moved to do something about it. 

Babb felt she was a better writer than Steinbeck because her book was more realistic. If realism is the goal, I would agree with her. Her book is vastly superior to “Grapes” in that regard. But Steinbeck’s book is art. It’s a reflection of reality distorted and expanded into the level of myth or dream. Both books are really good, and really important.

I highly recommend reading “Whose Names are Unknown,” especially if you enjoyed “The Grapes of Wrath” or are particularly interested in Depression-era culture and politics. I don’t know if her book would have been successful if it had been published in 1939, though I suspect her publisher was wrong and it would have sold well enough. It’s also pretty clear that sexism played a big role here. I feel like the subtext of the publisher’s decision was another book about the Dust Bowl (BY A WOMAN) can’t compete with The Great White American Male Author.

Hello! I think like I've never asked you, but what are your favorite operas and opera composers in general? I know you like Eugene Onegin (and Le Nozze 🤔?), which is understandable, but what about other stuff please tell me. You can even list your top 20 (or 30, or 50?) that'd be cool 😎

who, ME??? *blushes * (especially because I know you study music) well, if yOU think it would be cool I will indeed list an opera top 20! but keep in mind I have only been into opera for a year and I usually like to obsess over one opera at a time, thus I make very slow process in discovering new favorites (which I also love to do!)

Honestly it is incredibly difficult to “rank” but I will do my best. The first 10 are operas I actually listen to regularly, and am well on the way to knowing by heart (like Onegin my beloved <3) (YES I LIKE VERDI is it clear? I won’t apologize) and 10-20 are operas I have only seen/heard once but either love the story or the music or both.

Top on my list to watch next are Thaïs, Roméo et Juliette, and L’Étoile, the latter on the recommendation of @monotonous-minutia and @notyouraveragejulie… oh and definitely Don Carlos hehe @revedebeatrice. I also need to finish Idomeneo and finally get to Roberto Devereux! I’d also definitely like to see some operas by women and POC :) which reminds me I never got around to my Women’s Opera History Month assignment :( (yet!)

And I always take recommendations!!!!

follow-up to my previous reblog (about memory and executive function): I shared it with some friends who all reacted as hoped, causing me to turn around in my chair like a Bond villain of some sort, only to realise some toast I had made about an hour prior had gone uneaten. after talking to this with an online friend who is knowledgeable and learned in this sort of thing, I have since printed off an ADHD self-report form and am posting this to keep myself accountable for making an appointment with my GP about it tomorrow.

...but also, I recounted this whole incident to my flatmate later. my flatmate, who is a blessing, is an engineering student who is very good at the double bass and knows a lot about classical music as well as the methods by which medieval swords and armour were produced and anime I’d never previously heard of (to name but a few!), who yesterday explained to me the minutiae of their show-watching schedule (they have five shows on rotation -- one will be a non-plot based lighthearted thing to just tune in and out of, ideally fifteen minutes in length; two will be more long-form, serialised things that have a plot to get into (ideally one is thirty minutes and one is 45-60 minutes); one will be a cartoon or anime; there is a free slot they use for more sporadic things), and who also mentioned that they usually have significant difficulty getting their exams finished in the alotted time frame for reasons they had, until recently, not been able to place. they mentioned that someone said to them recently, it might be worth considering trying to get an autism diagnosis, something they said they hadn’t really considered in much depth before but did make sense. for a while I had been operating under the assumption they very much Knew(tm) about this, which I mentioned; I did second that recommendation and also mentioned I’d be happy to provide references for them at a potential consultation. we both found this exchange very funny. (flatmate also said something similar about my ADHD tendencies!)

What remains of Fall Anime 2020

You might have noticed that I haven’t been keeping up with my season impressions, mostly (but not exclusively) because it’s really boring to come up with new ways to say “it’s isekai, which means it’s garbage for stupids”. So here’s what I ended up finishing, in ascending order of goodinosity.

Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- Rhyme Anima

Ostentatious rap battles in an insanely stupid universe are very fun. The thing is that this doesn’t want to be a good anime, it wants to sell us on these characters, and the characters are pretty terrible on account of all of them being one-word gimmicks. So, let’s give them three rounds of introductions and have them solve lame, generic crimes for 8 episodes instead of setting up the rivalries that everyone suddenly has later, when the show gets good - because it does start delivering towards the end, and becomes really all I wanted. So I can’t even say I’m disappointed, but the first half of the show is almost entirely worthless. 4/10

Assault Lily Bouquet

I don’t want to be the guy that’s all “I’m mad at this show not catering to what I want”, but I do have to say that Salt Bucket is much better at being a goofy, lighthearted yuri comedy than it is at action (though there are a few choice cuts) and at having an engaging storyline. This is again just an ad for some game or other, so it’s no surprise it has about two dozen characters too many, but it also has quite a lot of superfluous plot - so much so that I suspect it was initially planned to be twice as long. Apart from that, it’s cool and all that some Gainax old hand got to make his own Gunbuster-like, but it’s just not very good at that and all I wanted was Kaede antics and bath scenes, of which 1 per episode is clearly too few. 5/10

The King's Avatar 2

King’s Avatar got a sequel and overall I have to say, I kinda like it more than the first season even though it looks much less ambitious and even the character designs were changed towards the bland. But I honestly don’t care much about the esports aspect of this and much of S2, especially in the back half, is more about schemes and social engineering - as close to an Eve Online anime as we’re ever going to get, I guess. It’s still very chinajank (why the hell does every episode come with a redundant chibi summary of itself, etc), and while I can’t call that “good” it does remind me of a time when I wasn’t filled with useless knowledge of anime tropes and was just enjoying the weirdness. Also, Ye God’s antics is as close to “looking for anime with OP MC” as I’m comfortable with getting. 6/10

Heaven Official's Blessing

Now how about some Chinimation that isn’t very janky? I only became aware of Heaven Official’s Blessing when it suddenly rocketed to the top of the MAL charts, so I gave it a looksie and oh boy. The first few episodes of this show are flat out gorgeous, quite funny and very very gay. So I was ready to agree with MAL for once, except it then launches into an arc that mostly consists of our dudes sitting in a dark pit telling each other stories that aren’t very interesting and seem barely related to the setup. Yeah, the back half of this just isn’t very good at all. And the subs are hot garbage. Still, the beginning is so impressive that I would recommend this show despite the middling rating it’s about to get. 6/10

Ochikobore Fruit Tart

You know the problem that these 5girls4koma stories have, where one of the characters is an annoying pervert, yeah? Well, in Fruit Tart every character is that character, and they’re rather cultured as well. Yes, it’s often of questionable taste and it has a terminal case of 4koma storytelling but dammit if I didn’t enjoy it. It certainly helps that this show’s greatest asset by far is Broko and it seems to be aware of this, because there’s a lot of Broko material. It would have probably have gotten a 6 but the last episode is just so... maximum Fruit Tart. I’m down for some trash if it’s as well made as this, and I do like my kiraralikes spicy, so thumbs up over here. YMM definitely V on this one. 7/10

Majo no Tabitabi

Speaking of things that are hard to recommend despite me liking them a lot, Elaina here challenges the very notion of what a TV show even is supposed to be. I assume most people tune in every week expecting to get something roughly similar. Not so with this one, you could get everything from slice of life antics to Higurashi-style gore, or reasonably deep character study to pervert comedy. I would say that the only unifying thread is the presence of Elaina, who is a very fun character, but there’s an episode she’s not in, so there you go. But I’m a connoisseur of the weird and I also have to say that I enjoyed every episode in its own way. Also, each episode stays remarkably consistent by itself, and in the end it wraps it all up with a sort of neat “life is like a box of chocolates” thematic bow, which isn’t earthshatteringly profound but hey, it’s there. Just don’t go in with expectations, especially not expectations based on the first episode. 7/10

Love Live! Nijigasaki

It’s Love Live. Good old reliable Love Live. Really not much to say about this one, any discussion of what makes this different from previous iterations is going to end up in minutiae only people who already watched this could possibly care about. I do have to say that while the musical numbers are as good as Sunshine’s were towards the end and there’s also a lot more of them, “looking budget deficient outside the CG” is the one thing I didn’t expect from something that’s ostensibly a Sunrise premium product. So boo on that one, apart from that it’s idols (an anagram of solid). 7/10

Garupa Pico Oomori

The chibi SD shorts based off Bang Dream are still better than the main show. Even if S3 was actually quite good, this is just the best thing you can do with 30+ characters that aren’t that deep. Garupa Pico specializes in absurd humor setpieces that at points is better at being Pop Team Epic than Pop Team Epic itself was. Take that, memelords. 7/10

Fire Force S2

Fire Force is just weird, man, and it’s sort of great. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a property of this magnitude show this much of the ol idgaf spirit. How about an episode where the A plot is the most evenhanded exploration of religion i’ve seen in anime, and the B plot is about blowing up a tryhard edgelord by exposing him to panties? How about a subplot where Batman and Thor infiltrate the vatican to kill the pope, only for that to lead into a gay rape backstory, only for that to be resolved by dank weed and dismemberment? It really is quite a thing, as they say. Now, Fire Force certainly delivers hard at points, but it’s also very scattershot, even if S2 is somewhat more consistent than S1. The weakest parts are unsurprisingly still the ones where it’s remembering its fighting shounen template, and that’s not only because I don’t like that, it’s also because it’s particularly and consistently bad at scheduling these huge, simultaneous multifight setpieces it often crescendoes with. But hey, at least these tend to look super cool. In short, Fire Force is a land of contrasts and still the only fighting shounen I give a damn about. 7/10

IDOLiSH7 Second Beat

Did you know that I think Idolshi7 is the best one of all of these huge-ass commercial idol franchises? Yeah, I think it’s better than Love Live, and as of Fall 2020 also the better looking one because Troyca still delivers where Sunrise apparently can’t. I guess still don’t like the music much, thankfully there isn’t a lot of that. It also still specializes in gigantic drama, and to its credit S2 is now much better at either getting to the point or at least making it silly and fun. You show that door who’s boss, Sou. Still fantastic Tsumugis all over the place as well, in fact I think I like all the characters now. Even Banri gets his big moment in this season! Yeah, this stuff is pretty cool. 8/10

Adachi and Shimamura

So here’s the AOTS, and it’s the lovechild of Bloom Into You and Tsuki ga Kirei. While it definitely isn’t as good as either of these two, because it lacks the “about more than just teenagers being hyperbolic about a crush” part from Bloom and the part where it has an actual ending from TgK, it carves out its own niche with its loopy, almost stoned tone that’s full of side weirdos and yuri hyperspace. It’s also uniquely focused, with a tiny core cast and even Shimamura doesn’t really matter all that much. This is all about Adachi, and thankfully Adachi is amazing. Amazingly awkward, that is. It’s very cute. So yeah, this is a bit too lacking in substance to aspire to classic status, but it’s a great time nonetheless. 8/10

Month of New Operatic Works #25: La Colombe (Opera Rara recording, 2015): Reactions

What do you get when you cast a short, fluffy Gounod opera with four magnificent singers (Erin Morley, Javier Camarena, Michèle Losier, and Laurent Naouri-- kudos to the anon who guessed all four) and record it? The answer: this recording.

And short and fluffy this opera is: clocking in at just under ninety minutes, the opera is yet another in a line of sweet little bonbons I’ve enjoyed discovering this month. Not every opera needs to be Big And Serious And Important, although you all know I love those. Sometimes you just need bonbons.

With that, the plot:

Set in a small cottage outside of Florence in the mid-1800s, La Colombe (The Dove) is about a visit that gets a bit...strange (but spoiler alert: it works out alright in the end).

Horace (Camarena) is a Florentine who once had some wealth to his name but spent all of it in an ultimately unsuccessful pursuit of the wealthy countess Sylvie (Morley). Unable to continue living in Florence, he has moved to this cottage with his godson, the angsty teenager Mazet (Losier in yet another fantastic trouser role @monotonous-minutia), and their pet dove, whom Horace has named Sylvie after the countess. They may be poor, but Sylvie the dove always gets her food!

Into the midst of this arrives Maitre Jean (Naouri), Sylvie’s butler, who has come on Sylvie’s behalf to attempt to buy the talented dove from Horace. Sylvie wants the dove because she is in a bit of a feud with another wealthy Florentine woman, Amynte (who never appears). They both have many riches and grand palaces, but Amynte has a parrot who can talk and sing. Sylvie has no such bird and as a result has lost favor with Florentine society (yes, really). However, she sees the dove from her erstwhile admirer as her chance. Horace firmly refuses to sell the dove, but it seems he still has a crush on the real woman...

As Jean leaves, Sylvie herself enters. Mazet (not knowing who she is) yells at her for a bit before she reveals who she is, at which point Mazet gets even more PO’d at her, while Horace is ecstatic. Sylvie finds herself also having some feelings and decides the best thing to do in this situation is to invite herself to dinner. Jean comes back and Sylvie announces that he will cook dinner using whatever Horace and Mazet have. End Act I.

Later that day, Jean gets upset because Horace and Mazet have basically nothing except beans. Mazet manages to find grapes while Horace decides that because Sylvie must have the best they can offer, he will kill Sylvie the dove and serve it for the meal.

He gives the bird to Mazet to kill while he goes and looks for wine. Sylvie enters and starts regretting her life choices. The quartet finish preparing and sit down to dinner. After some conversation and singing, they eat.

At this point, Sylvie once again asks Horace for the dove, only for him to tell her that he cooked it and they have eaten it. Sylvie is shocked at the depth of Horace’s love for her and reflects on her own growing feelings for him.

But there is still one final twist in store: Mazet runs off, only to return with Sylvie the dove, still very much alive. How? Mazet had found another bird to kill, cook, and serve in its place, and not just any bird, but parrot, and not just any parrot, but Amynte’s. All rejoice and decide to return to Florence together.

So yeah, despite the brief swerve into darkness, it’s overall a very sweet opera. Great music. The arias bop. The singers are as excellent as excellent can be.
