I recently had a conversation with a friend that made me realise that (maybe) people might not know that the Italian mafia still exists and actively operates all over Italy. Like, the general international public has this old-timey idea of the mafia that stops at the 1950s, with Al Capone, seedy bars, car chases with tommy guns etc. etc. or at least that seems to be the case for the people who don’t live in Europe, or otherwise close to Italy.
So, I made this poll. DISCLAIMER: this poll is NOT so i could judge people in any way. I can’t really fault anyone for not knowing about a problem so tied to Italian soil and culture, I was just curious.
NOTE: I’m not making a distinction between the actual Mafia, Camorra, Ndrangheta etc. etc. just pretend that all Italian organized crime is one big thing for the sake of this poll.

The restrictions on trans healthcare make absolutly zero sense to me at all. People should be able to do whatever the fuck they want with their own bodies. End of story. I'd ask why these bunk, GCSE level studies are getting held up as doctrine but I know why, you know why. It's to restrict what people can do with their own fucking bodies.

The really difficult thing about trying to get anxiety treated is that all the things im scared of right now are actual real world threats that are both possible and likely and have sometimes happened before, and are usually made worse by inaction. Like sure when I'm obsessed with the idea of my floor collapsing or some supernatural creature living in my wardrobe those are mostly not real and i can deal with that. But when its something like failing my 3rd attempt at higher education when i have a learning disability and no supports for it or getting investigated by the government in a way that only consists of phone calls and no written information when i can't cope with high stakes phone calls at all and will only get myself in a bigger mess if i answer them thats a real genuinely threatening situation that i can't just do some mindfullness about and ignore. I need a learning plan and legal advice, but they all require phone calls and when I'm this stressed i end up fumbling them, or not being able to make them at all because its too scary. This isnt just rumination and racing thoughts its acrually dangerous situations that could leave me homeless or imprisoned with no money and no job or education to ensure any kind of future.

So my headphone cable is slowly turning to stone or something because for some strange reason AudioTechnica used a material that gradually hardens with contact to human skin oils??? Seems like a pretty gross oversight on a thing that costs 300-odd bucks but what do I know

Reading flatland and obviously Bill’s home dimension and flatland aren’t exactly the same, but like. Since we don’t know which parts are different I’m just thinking. This is really unorganized and all over the place and probably doesn’t make any sense but
In flatland, it takes a LOT of planning for an equilateral triangle to be born. I’m talking like generations of interbreeding and methods for the fathering isosceles to get as close to equilateral as possible. It’s a huge deal. When an equilateral is created, it’s celebrated by pretty much everyone (for a miriad of different reasons but I won’t get into that). And being “irregular” in any respect is one of the worst things you can be. If you don’t “fix” your irregularity enough, you’re executed.
So imagine Bill’s family working their triangular asses off to have an equilateral kid, to give him a better life, and when they finally do it, he’s got that eye. From what we’ve seen of his parents, they seem to have taken care of him as best they could, but again, it’s been a whole ordeal just to have him, involving the whole community and family, and he came out wrong.
I imagine that’s probably why his parents took him to see the doctor and drink the “juice” that messed with his vision. They thought they were doing what was best for him. They didn’t blame him for his eye, didn’t hate him for it, but they felt the need to fix him, either to please their families or even just bring him to their own standards. The idea of irregularity being wrong is seen as natural and obvious, so they wouldn’t find an issue with trying to change him.
Another thing about flatland is that the mention of any third dimension or any idea close to that is pretty much criminal. (Spoilers i guess) The narrator of the story, a square who saw the third dimension for himself, is eventually locked away for talking about it.
So Bill was supposed to be a sort of miracle baby, I guess is the best way to put it. And when he came out just slightly but irreparably wrong, it was devastating. And then he starts spouting about 3D and the stars and he just wants people to understand, to see that it’s not dangerous, that it’s beautiful. But his parents don’t want him to get imprisoned or worse, so they try to keep him quiet. They give him his juice and his silly straws and wave away any ideas about the third dimension.
Bill was born a disappointment, one of the lowest life forms imaginable, and the only way he was gonna get anywhere in life was by losing his stars forever. He was told that the thing right in front of him wasn’t real, that he should stop talking about it, that he could get in trouble. So he had to show everyone that he was right. He would be a hero! He would be the kid who finally discovered where the light came from, something no scientist had ever gotten close to figuring out!
But in the end his parents were right. It was too dangerous. God bill tragic backstory is so ougrhhhhj grabs alex hirsch by the shoulders and shakes him

As someone who lives outside the UK, I find it so hilariously wild when "the monarchy brings in tourism" is used as a reason to keep this random family in power.
Tourists are not going to see or meet members of the royal family, it's not a Disney meet and greet situation.
Tourists visiting places of importance like Windsor and Buckingham Palace does not require an active monarchy to fuck over the working class.
If anything, I would be MORE compelled to visit England if the monarchy were abolished and the public were allowed to view the miriad of art the royal family have hidden away.
Visiting Versailles and being able to enter much better for tourism than if you could only look at it from outside because some nepo baby lives there.
So for anyone quaking in their boots about tourism post-abolition, worry not, tourists will come because seeing the monarchy was never the point in the 1st place.
