prior to ww1 you had a large cohort of people in europe with little to no direct experience of war who thought it was glorious and violence was empowering. they thought it would make "real men" out of boys -- instead it gave so many of them extreme psychological distress and trauma symptoms that mirrored the then common diagnosis of the feminine illness of "hysteria." deeply puzzling and angering, that this most "masculine" of noble experiences should break boys down into "girly" hysterics. what is wrong with them, that they didn't benefit from such a glorious thing??? the narrative cannot be wrong! the narrative is right -- somehow the humans are wrong.

Anyway. That's what I think of when people are mad that violence didn't "empower" Katniss. Even though violence, warfare, and being a soldier is depicted as inherently destructive for all the young characters. Not a single one, boy or girl, is truly made better by it.

You know, sometimes I get on here and debate messaging blogs I used to talk to all the time years ago, but I never do. I get nervous considering I was so young and now I'm much older than I used to be.

I like your point there! "Quickest path" connects for me to that bit from the quote "You've got to recognize them so they're not constantly sneaking up on you." Denying the struggle of living, each dealing with our own shit, doesn't make it go away - it makes us unarmed and not mindful about it, that's all. And of course art isn't the only way to reflect and engage with that stuff and everyone doesn't have to like the same art.

But the idea that it's the "progressive" "good person" position that it's wrong to explore complexity and admit people can change radically within a lifetime, whether through corruption or positive change? Is mind-boggling and disturbing to me.

In a really dark (trapped in an abusive home) period of my life, watching what Walt's simmering resentment and desire for control above everything else did to him was cathartic and helpful to me, in terms of getting on a path of letting go of things and moving beyond where I was at instead of holding on to bitterness. (It took a long time, I had to be safe before I could do that, but it got me thinking it over).

He let feeling helpless and enraged over the wrongs people did him and his fear of being powerless define him, he sacrificed everything--looked into his own frightened child's eyes and refused to repent of what he was doing--and, artistically, his ending is fantastic - because he dies not regretting what he's done! But we can regret what we've seen him do, we can say - I see why he's given himself over to this drug (he thinks he's so much better than the addicts who take his meth, but he's addicted to feeling powerful and in control at any cost), but nothing is worth this. And reflect on those complex emotions and where they can lead and how they're not wrong to feel - but what do we do with them? And what is the cost?

And there's even the great thing with Skyler being tempted by the power and money after feeling so powerless and pushed around. (And, of course, people reacted to her being tempted so differently and with such rage because of misogyny lol).

I love it! Good stories (or even "low brow" stories or stories that have issues in terms of execution but have something interesting at their core) that can explore change within a person are a delight. The fact that people can and do change every day, for the better and for the worse, is one of the sources of great hope (and fear) in life.

Katniss, a canonically mentally ill woman in book and films, and a woman of color in the books, being safe to have the kids she was terrified to want because her fascist society kidnapped and ritually murdered kids every year is not anti-feminist for fuck's sake.

"Reproductive rights" is about both advocating for the right to the choice TO safely have kids--especially for people who have been socially oppressed in ways that violently denied them that--and the right NOT TO as well. It's both.

It must always be both. Because it has always been something where the violence cuts two ways -- reproductive choice TO denied to some and reproductive choice NOT TO denied to others at the same time.

If you live in the US, this is a society that literally legalized cutting into disabled ("feeble-minded") people to take their ability to have kids. It's a society where doctors continued that practice well into the 1970s against women of color specifically because of racist ideology. That's the society. The idea that feminism and empowerment is NO BABIES is so gallingly simplified and erasing of multiple forms of violence against marginalized groups.

For me it's not even that some people don't want to - that's fine by me. They gotta do what they gotta do. It's how you're policed if you don't have those hangups and just want to do your thing and enjoy messy women being really human and messy. People don't just live and let live about it. A lot of people lose their shit concern trolling and purity policing.

There's something extremely depressing to me about how many people just don't want to get weird with female characters the way they do with male characters.

Like, I can kind of see why a lot of people feel weird about writing about bad things happening to female characters, but what it leads to is everyone putting female characters up on a shelf where you can admire them but you can't actually do anything interesting with them because that might be sexist or just make people feel bad. And I think that's actually a whole lot worse in the long run.
