The true jewel of my outfit is an instrument that has accompanied us for decades and struggles, which is part of our idiosyncrasy "the classical guitar", a symbolic replica of Mangoré's beloved guitar, which wove an indelible connection between Paraguay and El Savior. This outfit is not only a tribute to music, but also a reminder of how Mangore united two nations with his music, leaving an indelible mark of love and brotherhood. My suit is not just a work of fabric and colors, it is the embodiment of the passion and legacy of a man who transcended borders, touching people's hearts with every note of his guitar.

Imagine if AtS s4 & BtVS s7 were fully utilizing the fact their arcs take place in the same universe and the main characters know each other so it's really one big story. (yeah I know different networks)

In Lessons, Willow moved a flower via magic 6,112 miles from Paraguay to England. She explained, "It's all connected. The root system, the molecules...the energy. Everything's connected."

Buffy turned her house into a shelter for outcasts, orphans, & refugees. Crowded together for months, sleeping on the floor, in line for the one bathroom. It's cabin fever that started the mutiny.

Meanwhile Angel owned a hotel with a huge lobby, offices, elevators, 68 suites (living room, bedroom, kitchenette, bathroom), a few unexplored rooms.

Willow drove to LA to tell Angel that Buffy died. In AtS s4 AI never told Buffy that Angel was missing. In AtS s3 Gunn said she's the "love of his life & that ain't no short life." Yet it didn't occur to them she would want to know or could help find him. In s7 Buffy (a month post rescue) says "I would've given up everything I had to be with--I loved him more than I will ever love anything in this life."

Willow could've tethered Buffy's house to Angel's hotel, only a 120 mile distance. Every Potential as well as every Scooby & AI member could have their own private apartment with suites to spare.

Buffy lived in Los Angeles 16.5 of 22 years. It's on her mind in s6 when talking of the hallucinations. "And I was just some nutcase in LA." In s7 did she see the news reporting on the city raining fireballs and a localized eclipse with 24/7 darkness?

In BtVS s1 Buffy was Jocasta (Oedipus' mom-wife) on stage. In AtS s4 Angelus mocks Connor/Cordy saying "there should be a play." In The Puppet Show a demon hunter who had an affair with a Slayer was turned into a ventriloquist dummy. Angel has been a puppet literally & figuratively with the PTB.

Hyperion is named after a titan from Greek myth, dad of Eos (dawn), Helios (sun), & Selene (moon). Does Angel know Dawn is Buffy's daughter?

Greek is big in the verse. Willow writing a Sappho poem in Greek. Anya, "It's like a Greek tragedy." Willow called upon the titan Kronos for revenge on Glory. In s8 comics Buffy's Sysiphus analogy.

Met Oracles--portal connected post office to their realm, entrance written in Greek "gateway for lost souls"--the day Angel & Buffy reunited. "Together you were powerful, alone you are dead."

If the Scooby Gang & Fang Gang shared info they'd realize they were in the same situation.

Ra-Tet (conduit for Senior Partners) were the five manifestations of the Egyptian god Ra. It was the Egyptian god Osiris who resurrected Buffy.

Buffy dreamt of Potentials in September and they started to arrive at her door in December yet Faith didn't know a thing til late April or early May.

Putin is nostalgic for the dysfunctional USSR of his youth. He also wishes to be known as one of the greats of Russian history. His ego is what this war is really about. Attempts by Elon Musk or other ignorant dupes to placate Putin miss the point.

Putin isn’t interested in compromise or in making a deal. He’s not acting like the normal leader of a country. He’s lost over 60,000 troops and has little to show for it. A normal leader would have made a face-saving excuse and resigned months ago. Putin is willing to continue no matter how much it hurts his own country. 

Russia’s war, led by an obsessive dictator, reminds me of a dictator and a conflict in South America in the 19th century. Francisco Solano López, who inherited the dictatorship of Paraguay from his father (Carlos Antonio López) foolishly went to war against his neighbors.

Paraguay was in no sense prepared for a major war, let alone a war of the scope that Solano López had unleashed. In terms of size, Solano López's 30,000-man army was the most powerful in Latin America. But the army's strength was illusory because it lacked trained leadership, a reliable source of weapons and matériel, and adequate reserves. Since the days of El Supremo, the officer corps had been neglected for political reasons. The army suffered from a critical shortage of key personnel, and many of its fighting units were undermanned. Paraguay lacked the industrial base to replace weapons lost in battle, and the Argentine-Brazilian alliance prevented Solano López from receiving arms from abroad.

Doesn’t that sound just a little familiar? 😉

Apart from some Paraguayan victories on the northern front, the war was a disaster for Solano López. The core units of the Paraguayan army reached Corrientes in April 1865. By July more than half of Paraguay's 30,000-man invasion force had been killed or captured along with the army's best small arms and artillery. The war quickly became a desperate struggle for Paraguay's survival.

Russia’s survival is not at stake – at least so far.

Paraguay's soldiers exhibited suicidal bravery, especially considering that Solano López shot or tortured so many of them for the most trivial offenses. Cavalry units operated on foot for lack of horses. Naval infantry battalions armed only with machetes attacked Brazilian ironclads. The suicide attacks resulted in fields of corpses. Cholera was rampant. By 1867 Paraguay had lost 60,000 men to casualties, disease, or capture, and another 60,000 soldiers were called to duty. Solano López conscripted slaves, and infantry units formed entirely of children appeared.

Like Solano López, Putin is short of troops. But conspiracy theories and paranoia are plentiful in Russia.

Imagining himself surrounded by a vast conspiracy, he ordered thousands of executions in the military. In addition, he executed 2 brothers and 2 brothers-in-law, scores of top government and military officials, and about 500 foreigners, including many diplomats. He frequently had his victims killed by lance thrusts to save ammunition.

The war ended very badly for Solano López and Paraguay.

Allied troops entered Asunción in January 1869, but Solano López held out in the northern jungles for another fourteen months until he finally died in battle. The year 1870 marked the lowest point in Paraguayan history. Hundreds of thousands of Paraguayans had died. Destitute and practically destroyed, Paraguay had to endure a lengthy occupation by foreign troops and cede large patches of territory to Brazil and Argentina.

The most conservative estimate points to a loss of 8.7% of Paraguay’s population in that war. The Economist in 2012 reported a much higher loss.

The war, known in Paraguay as the “War of ’70” or the “Great War”, was among the worst military defeats ever inflicted on a modern nation state. According to Thomas Whigham of the University of Georgia, as much as 60% of the population and 90% of Paraguayan men died from combat or, more often, from disease and starvation. Other researchers put the figure considerably lower—but still atrociously high. 

Putin, one way or another, is leading his country into doom – or at least decrepitude. In addition to the combat death toll, an estimated 800,000 people have fled the country since the war started. Those are mostly younger, more tech-savvy, and better educated people. The country is being depopulated of its future.

The Soviet Union should be left in the dustbin of history. To prosper in the 21st century, Russia needs to act like a normal country and choose normal leaders.

Manchester and Newcastle diary

I went to Manchester and Newcastle for the weekend to see my favorite artist in Newcastle. Very random. But here are more random things to happen:

While boarding the plane the flight attendant said “Congratulations for yesterday” while he repeated my name. I was confused for a minute because all I could think about was the Argentina and Paraguay game where Argentina won. Curse my Argentina mind to only think about football and Messi. Classic Argentina. But no, he kept asking me if I lived in Spain (which I do now) and I said yes but still didn’t get it. Until I realized October 12th is the day of the Virgin of Pilar which is very important in Spain. I knew it. But I am Argentinean and had slept for less than 5 hours probably.

The guy at the passport control in Manchester asked me the usual questions: Why are you here? Do you know anyone in England? Where are you staying? Are you staying in Manchester? So I said “No, I’m going to Newcastle for a day tomorrow” and he was very confused (stop shading Newcastle English people) so I told him I was going to see a concert. He then points out he is from Newcastle, and I try to be friendly and mention the football team which I had watched a few games a few times (they are not winning the champions, Matty Healy) and he goes: yeah, it’s all we have. And when I point out how they had won against PSG he goes: yeah whatever. I guess he wasn’t into football.

I went to see the Japanese house at Newcastle University and it blew my mind. I love smaller intimate shows (Istg Amber smiled at me during boyhood). The entire set I was just vibing and singing along to the songs. It felt so beautiful, almost religiously. During Sunshine Baby when they said “Hold on to this feeling because you won’t feel it for long” I started crying which I had never cried during a concert. Amber radiates such a beautiful and fun energy you can’t miss it.

On my way to the airport, the taxi driver asked if we could stop for petrol ( at 4 a.m. This is the second time an Uber/taxi has asked me to stop for gas in a year. It’s always so awkward not to mention how dangerous it can be. I am alive and well so no worries but it’s always good to have someone tracking your location when you are in a taxi/Uber etc.

To be honest, I really liked Newcastle and Manchester was okay. But every time I go to England I think about moving there. I need to stop going because I get this horrible feeling that I need to stay but I can’t. I might write more about this soonish because it’s been troubling my mind for the past month and need to get it out.
