What is the Island Prize?

It's a literary competition held each year for African writers (people who were born in Africa or who belong to the African diaspora) to potentially get their first ever book published!

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم Sedikit berbagi tips buat teman-teman semua, apabila MALAS dan merasa TIDAK NYAMAN untuk mengetik di ponsel dalam berkarya dan berdakwah lewat media sosial dengan tulisan (Contoh: Instagram). Karena jika ini terus dibiarkan, tentunya kita bakal menjadi KEBINGUNGAN dan TIDAK SEMANGAT. Contoh nyatanya seperti SAYA. Sebenarnya masih rada-rada malas sih, tapi setidaknya ini ialah langkah awal dalam menghilangkan kemalasan dalam diri. Karena saya sebenarnya lebih aktif di depan PC dibandingkan dengan ponsel, karena saya pribadi tidak suka berlama-lama bercermin di depannya. Sudah banyak aplikasi yang memiliki kemampuan mensinkronisasikan data antara ponsel dengan PC di zalam sekarang. Jika masih bingung, mungkin bisa mengikuti saya untuk memakai "Evernote" sebagai aplikasi untuk menyimpan catatan, foto, dll. Di PC Windows saya kira sudah disediakan aplikasi khususnya. Untuk yang memakai OS GNU/Linux distro Debian (terkhusus distro Ubuntu dan distro bawahannya seperti Lubuntu & Kubuntu) bisa memakai aplikasi pihak ketiga dari Evernote seperti "MixNote." Tentunya dengan syarat PC harus online agar catatan bisa tersinkronisasikan dengan ponsel. Silahkan cari di Google untuk aplikasinya di PC. Ngga punya PC? Tapi ponsel support OTG? Bisa diatasi dengan menggunakan keyboard eksternal untuk mengetik. Selamat mencoba dan tetap semangat dalam berdakwah. My exams have officially started!

This means that in three months I'll be able to write to my heart's content, but until then, here's an update on what you can expect next:

Next in line to be updated is my Decepticon Scenario book. The next chapter's title will be "Revenge is sweet" (I wonder who's getting revenge on whom 😏). I have made some progress (Megatron's part is complete and Starscream's is close to completion).

The first of my G1/IDW books which I will be working on is "Rocking Jazz". I am not even a third into the first chapter, but at least I've got it rolling!

Listened through a few times on my laptop. Everything sounds great from the last revision - just a few notes:

0:00 - Why is guitar only in left ear?

0:13 - high trumpet is too piercing

0:36 - Strings too quiet

1:03 - Delete grace note in trumpet. It’s just A - F# - A, A - F# - A, A - F# - A, A-A-A! See attached sheet music. Should grow in intensity each time.

1:06 - What’s the “Ahh?” not intentional

1:07 - lyrics are “Bah, doo, bah doo, bah doo dum bah doo [repeat]” - sounds a little all over the place

1:18 - Trumpet line is very sloppy - can you tighten this up? Maybe we were wrong hiring the junior high kids after all.

1:33 - same, see above.

1:41 - “Septemboh” here doesn’t rhyme with “Remembuh” at 1:45

1:49 - Trumpets.

1:52 - Turn up riffs

1:53 - Enough. Just take out the trumpet from here to the end.

2:23 - Vocals sound too much like they were recorded in a bathroom.

2:35 - Try some different “Yow’s” - should sound like he’s winking at the girl across the bar.

3:08 - ARE YOU KIDDING, TRUMPETS

3:23 - Trumpets. I'll be finding new instruments for the remaining tracks.

3:24 - Bass should be more staccato this repeat.

Fade out at end should last another 20-30 seconds to really give the right vibe. Want to really hit that 4th chorus strong before we fade out.

MixNote – Easy and fast to take note

There is always something memorable in our life. MixNote is a simple and safe note app to help us do the record thing.

 As its name says, MixNote can take note with many ways to mix all your notes in one app.

 How to start?

Open MixNote, click “+” to create a note.

There are four icons at the bottom: camera, picture, to-do and voice. So you can add pictures by taking photo or from the gallery directly, create to-do list and record voice.

 MixNote supports tags. Click the tag icon to add tags. These tags are shown in the left menu of the app. When you want to view all notes in the same catalog, just to find the tag, such as travel, recipes, diary, etc.

 Talking about the diary, it’s a very private thing. If you don’t want other people to view a note, MixNote can help you lock and hide it. How to make it visible? Just shake you phone in the home page. As for the unlock method, if you want advanced protection, you can select password, pattern or fingerprint lock in the Settings of MixNote.

 MixNote has a ToDo widget. You can add it in the home, so you can check the schedule without opening the app.

 What’s more

There is a hidden feature with the “+”. That is you can start recording voice by long press it. When you want to start recording quickly, it will be very useful.

When you need to write a memo during a call, such as a phone number or meeting time, you can shake the phone to start recording your voice. No need to find pen and paper.

Producing 101

As a record producer I work with some crazy talented musicians, but every now and then I get paired up with a musician that doesn’t quite hit the mark. Maybe they can’t play with a metronome or maybe they can’t double parts. Maybe their own personal bar of where “good” really sits is a little skewed. The way I handle them can influence the performance I get and it’s pertinent that I make the right decision on how to deal with a less-than-awesome musician.

Step one is to figure out how thick their skin really is. Are they going to cry when I ask them to redo something? Are they going to take it way too personally or will they step up and knock it out like a pro? I feel like I’m a pretty good judge of character but there are times when I miss the mark.

Most of the best performances are going to be in the first fews takes of a line (This is assuming they know the part), and then they typically get progressively worse. You beat somebody up for an hour on the same line and they start playing one take slightly better than the other and it’s important to keep in perspective that one isn’t “the take” just because it’s good by comparison. Review the first couple and compare to keeps things on a level playing field.

Sometimes all they need is a break. Go to dinner, take a breather, joke around, do 20 push ups, whatever.

Sometimes you have to break someone down for them to snap out of whatever ego / entitlement / mentality they came in with so you can get what the song needs. They cry, Sometimes they quit. Most of the time they respect me and I end up with a great take once I get them to the point where they’re about to tell me to fuck off.

Musicians can be cocky, pushy or have a certain mentality because they came from here or went to school there or had this gig or that gig or whatever. I can be just as pushy tho and if it’s my clients money thats on the table I’ll get what I need or I’ll bring in someone who can do it in less time. That person is always around the corner.

At times I’ll let these type of people do what they think is right, then ask them to come in and listen. Next we do it my way so they can hear the difference. Hence the job of the producer.

Be gentle if you need to be. Be their friend, but always be brutally honest. It’s the only way people learn or grow. Artists have everyone in the world kiss their ass and tell them how great they are. Managers, family, friends, label people, A&R, you name it. The producer is the one guy who keeps it real and doesn’t budge. It’s his job to make sure things get done correctly and hopefully help you grow a little along the way.
