A/N: So sorry it took me so long to get back to y’all! Here is a sneak peek for part two of MTAF! Chapter 2 should be here soon. :)

“Welcome, make yourself at home, my lady. Mr. Barber will be here shortly. In the meantime, he left this here for you.” In the center of the foyer, a round table sat, an envelope and a velvet blue box in the middle as a flute of champagne awaited you. “We were made aware that this is your favorite.”

You nodded, mumbling a small shit when you took a hold of the velvet box, the weight making you place it on the table where it sat. Gasping at what lay inside the box: a tremendously beautiful necklace, a grayish sapphire blue diamond surrounded with a halo of sixteen smaller white stones.

The chain seemed to follow with similar stones, only bigger and with square cuts and ovals.

It’s beauty was almost indescribable.

“Le bleu de France.” Nora announced.

“The Hope Diamond.” You muttered, taken aback by such surprise. “Isn’t this worth millions of dollars?” Though the career as an actress gave you a fortune, you could not imagine spending such a big amount of money on a necklace, even more so gifting it to a random person you’ve never even met.

“I believe so.” She smiled. “Come, we must sit you for dinner.”

With a shaking leg, you studied the dining room, messing with the silverware whilst doing so. “Mr. Barber will be here shortly, madam.” Sensing your uncomfortableness from the lengthy wait, she simmered. “Can I get you anything?”

Speak of the devil, and he shall appear.

Before you, the epitome of a gorgeous man walked in, tall and lean. You blinked, taken aback by his appearance, dark blue suit fit on his body. He offered his hand. “Andrew Barber, it’s a pleasure. Forgive me for the wait. I had things to take care of.”

He seemed so incredibly familiar, like if he was someone known, hidden in the back of your mind.

You stared causing the gentleman to chuckle lowly as he kissed your knuckles, gently caressing the side with his thumb. You smiled of course, always set to perfect first impressions, ignoring the dollop of what seemed to be blood on his white dress shirt, almost hidden behind his blazer.

'The Batman' --A Review

I watched this on a whim, really. It's not that I dislike Batman, it's just that after umpteen movies and reboots and relaunches and everything else, I couldn't possibly imagine what yet another Batman movie would have to offer me that's actually new.

I was quite happy to be proven wrong.

It's not often talked about, but you see it lurking on the covers of old-school Batman comics. "The World's Greatest Detective" it proclaims and after seven movies (I'm going from 1989 on- I know there were a few before that in various forms) at no point has anyone actually leaned into that concept in a hardcore way- until now.

Yes, The Batman is pretty much all about Batman (Robert Pattinson) getting his Detective skills on and trying to find out who murdered the Mayor of Gotham City, Don Mitchell Jr. (Rupert Percy-Jones) A previously unknown villain, calling himself The Riddler (Paul Dano) takes responsibility for the murder and, after Lt. James Gordan (Jeffrey Wright) summons Batman to the scene, it's revealed that The Riddler has left him a message. The next night, The Riddler strikes again, killing Commissioner Pete Savage (Alex Ferns) and leaving Batman another message.

Working with Gordan and Alfred (Andy Serkis) Batman begins to unravel the mystery The Riddler is providing- leading them to a trove of pictures of the former mayor in the company of a woman, Annika Kosolov (Hanna Hrzic) at the Iceberg Lounge, a nightclub run by Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Farrell) one of Mob Boss Carmine Falcone's (John Turturro) Lieutenants. Her roommate, Selina Kyle (Zoe Kravitz) also wants to know what happened to her, as she's missing.

The ring of corruption deepens, as Batman and Company discover that Savage was on Falcone's payroll as well as District Attorney Gil Colson- who is next to be kidnapped and sent to interrupt the funeral of the former mayor, Mitchell. The Riddler calls Colson's phone and threatens to detonate the bomb around his neck unless he can answer three riddles. Colson refuses to give up the name of the informant who took down former Mob boss Salvatore Maroni and is killed. Batman and Gordon initially think that the informant is the Penguin, but what they find- along with Annika's corpse is that Moroni's operation merely transferred to Falcone's control along with many corrupt Gotham City Officers helping out along the way.

Batman's past (because it can't be a Batman movie without talking about Batman's past) comes into view. Alfred is almost taken out by a letter bomb addressed to Bruce and The Riddler leaks evidence that Thomas Wayne hired Falcone to kill a journalist while he was running for Mayor- as revelations about Martha's family history of mental illness were about to be revealed. Alfred insists that Thomas only wanted the journalist silenced, not killed, and was going to turn himself in to the police and is convinced Falcone killed them both to keep them quiet.

The pieces come together quickly after that-- The Riddler strikes one final time before being unmasked and arrested, where he taunts Batman with the revelation of his final plan: the destruction of Gotham's sea wall and an attempt to kill the new Mayor-- Batman prevents one, but can only aid in the recovery efforts of the flood- but doing so, finds new purpose- to inspire hope in Gotham City.

Overall: Best Batman movie I've seen in years. I wasn't sure how I felt about Pattinson in the role as he seemed very emo in the previews, but he channels a ludicrous amount of intensity into it. This is a young Batman, just starting out on his superhero journey and he's learning and making mistakes and all of that is just refreshing as hell. The cast is excellent - Andy Serkis brings a new take to Alfred Pennyworth that works really, really well- I love it. Jeffrey Wright works perfectly as Lt. Gordon. Colin Farrell is incredible and absolutely unrecognizable as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin. But the best part about this movie is that it's shot and feels like a thriller and not a superhero movie. You could absolutely put this up against any number of thrillers and it would hold its own. A movie that is not weighed down by the superhero of it all and doesn't trip over its own cape? Now that's worth watching. My Grade: **** out of ****

Warnings: Implied age gap (based on my research Reader would be around 26-27 and Andy around 35), mentions of mob business, Reader has a backbone, cursing, broken nose, mentions of blood, Reader knowingly makes bad decisions (at least three), mentioned drinking & implied drunk sexy times 🙈

A/N: Andy is not married and doesn't have children in this fic.

He was on the phone when your head popped through the door crack. He beckoned you over with his fingers and you carefully closed the door behind you, standing in front of his desk, waiting for his call to be over.

"I know how much money he gave me Tony, but the contract you signed recently clearly stated that I get you pardoned for ONE thing - money laundering. I kept my end, but it's not my fault you got in trouble for other things - solicitation, DUI, drug possession and arms dealing are not covered in our contract. Now I have a meeting so we can talk later about what I will want to get the previously mentioned charges dropped. In the mean time, do think about how you will say yes." Andy smirked and finally met your eyes as he ended the call.

"I have a meeting in 3 minutes, so whatever you have to say or ask, better do it quickly, Sweetheart." He leaned in his chair and listened.

"It's about that client. He's bleeding all over the sofa and I just wanted to let you know that I'm going to the store and cleaning up as the leather shouldn't soak up that blood." You explained nonchalantly and pointed to the corridor laying behind the closed door of his office. Andy stood up immediately.

"What do you mean he's bleeding? What the fuck happened?" He walked around his desk to get to the door.

"I broke his nose. It's surprising how much blood pours out of it, really." You shrugged and stopped your boss in his tracks.

"You broke his nose? Why?" He blinked.

"Yes. I punched him after he hit on me and refused to take no as an answer." You raised your chin up slightly, making Andy raise his eyebrows and smile down at you.

"While I approve of it, you can't go around punching clients."

"Andy, I took this job because the pay is too good to pass up. And I understand that with every good thing compromises have to be made. That's why when I hear yelling, shoving, punching and screaming coming from your office, I pop in my earbuds and I continue working. When I see people wanted by the police strolling in and out of your office, sometimes in worse shapes, I don't pick up the phone and call 911." Andy crossed his arms over his chest and observed you with interest. "But hitting on me and not getting my disinterest, flat out trying to grope me...that's where I draw the line. Please pass that on to your clients."

"Duly noted." Andy nodded slightly, a smirk playing on his lips at your boldness.

"I'm gonna go to the store now and you two can continue the meeting." You once again pointed to the door and only exited when he gave you an acknowledgement.

He chuckled when you walked out, leaving the door opened and said to the client: "You can go in and try not to get blood on the carpet. I really don't want to deal with Jack today."

After the meeting was done, the client walked out of the office, nodding at you cautiously before Andy followed him out.

"I had a little talk with Bryce. Don't worry he won't bother you again." He smiled as he stood in front of your desk, you nodded briefly as you typed at your laptop. "So, how many noses have you broken so far?"

"Just two." You looked up from your screen.

"How long have you been practicing Taekwondo?"

"Zero time, but I have been boxing for the past 7 years."

"Isn't boxing a bit violent?"

"That's rich coming from the man who runs an underground crime ring." You laughed and leaned back in your chair, looking up at him.

"Fair point. I shouldn't be judging others by their appearance." He lifted his arms in surrender.

"I was thinking - you've been working for me for over a year now and I never offered to take you for a post-win drink. Would you care to join me today?" Andy offered and stepped closer, his thighs bumped at the edge of your desk.

"What are you celebrating?"

"Putting Tony in his place. I owed his father for putting me through law school and his proposal was to help his son out until I feel like I have repaid my debt to the Stark family. This was the last favour and I feel like I deserve a drink. Will you join me?" He smiled at you. It was a bad idea. You knew it. But so was taking this job, according to your friends and it was going well.

"One drink?"

"Just one." He smirked when you stood up, turning off your computer and taking your red blazer hung over the chair.

The red blazer was the first thing that came into your view when you opened your eyes in the morning. You groaned softly as your world still spun, turning over and coming face to face with your handsome boss. You blinked a few times, sobering up really fast as flashbacks from previous night came rushing to your head.

That ONE drink you were supposed to have.

The little cozy corner you two sat at.

The warm sound of Andy's laughter.

Those damn drinks you kept ordering even though the smart part of your brain told you not to.

Andy carrying your red heels as you walked down the few streets to get to the metro station.

The brilliant idea to kiss him, because you wanted to know how danger tasted like...

"Fuck." You whispered to yourself and you covered your head with your hand, chewing your bottom lip. This was probably the worst idea yet.

"Good morning, Sweetheart." Andy smiled as he woke up to you sitting in the giant king sized bed and kissed your naked shoulder.

You know that whole arranged marriage with a mob boss trope that never gets old?? It's that, but our mother was the one married off. Our new step daddy (Steve? Andy?) has a severe soft spot for us and spoils us every chance he gets. We're "daddy's little girl", so you can imagine how irate daddy is when aforementioned little girl comes to him fidgeting and requesting to see a doctor bc she's discovered that she's allergic to latex. We just wanted to lose our virginity before heading off to college. Maybe our step daddy can teach about alternatives to latex and safe sex when he's finished having his conniption fit. My 2021 Favorites

Following the lead of @thedarkplume and sharing my favorite reads from 2021. Thanks to all of you that blog and share your stories with us. I read tons this year, and honestly, there were only a couple that I didn’t finish. Appreciate the time you all take to craft such amazing work!

It’s important to note – ALL of these blogs are 18+. Follow this guidance and don’t read if you’re not old enough (you'll be blocked for sure). These are in no particular order, they’re all fantastic.

Ok, here we go…

@k-evans-writes, Higher Love – Chris Evans x OFC Nickie Morrison. This series is SO fun and Chris and Nickie’s world is the best! Great character development, our hero and heroine are trying to navigate the terrain of a relationship between two mega stars. I sit impatiently every week waiting for the next chapter 😊

@stargazingfangirl18 is one of my favorite finds this year. Everything she writes is great but a couple stand out. The first is Taken

Dark!Steve Rogers, Dark!Ransom Drysdale and Dark!Andy Barber. Warning: This is a brutal read and not for everyone. It’s incredibly compelling and well written, but proceed with caution.

My favorite of her work, however, is Necessary Arrangements, a Mob AU series with some of our favorite Chris Evans fictional babes. This story is FANTASTIC. It’s so clever and we learn more each chapter about the “readers” and their relationships. Andy Barber, Ransom Drysdale and Ari Levinson are some bad dudes but don’t give up on them – each chapter we get more insight into their stories and who they really are. And there is some delicious smut to be had! I highly recommend this one, don’t miss it, it’s great.

The next one is one that’s ongoing and she gave us a DOUBLE CLIFFHANGER before the holidays, so I’ve been knee-deep in suspense waiting impatiently for more! I am so damned excited for more of this, I took out a cone in the Chick-Fil-A drive thru when I saw on my phone that a chapter of this story had posted (it was one that had already posted but I’m so READY for more!). This story belongs to @river-soul, The Witness. Your testimony is set to put away one of Boston’s biggest mobsters - your former boss (Ari Levinson!). Stuck on an isolated farm with Marshal Steve Rogers, unexpected threats and complications arise as the trial approaches. Andy Barber is your attorney and you’ll meet some other friends from the MCU as well. This is such an incredibly crafted story and the characters are so well defined. There is a ton of suspense, you're constantly uneasy waiting for what's ahead and Reader really gets put through the ringer – such an excellent read. DO NOT MISS THIS ONE. P.S. Everything @river-soul writes is amazing so be sure to check out her masterlist.

@mycapt-ohcapt, Escape with Chris Evans – Chris Evans x OFC Nicole Frasier – When Nicole wins a contest to visit an escape room with Chris Evans, she never imagined what might happen and what the future would hold. Great chronicle of the development of a relationship, characters are well written. Gets kind of angsty but such a good read. I discovered this fic on WattPad, you can find it there as well.

@rodrikstark, Everything and Beyond – Steve Rogers x Reader – This is a sweet, fluffy budding romance that makes you root for this couple to get together. Very enjoyable read.

@avintagekiss24, We Loved With a Love That Was More Than Love – Steve Rogers x black!reader, but this story has ALL our fave CE characters in the house. This is ethereal, elegant and well-written with some world class smut that is truly the ultimate fantasy. Compelling and twisty. Your panties are going to be toast after this one.

@heliOs-writes, Slow Like Honey – This is another writer I’m so glad I found. Absolutely stellar, every work on the masterlist. Eloquent writing and well thought-out stories and characters on the whole list. This particular story is Steve Rogers and his daughter’s first grade teacher and their budding romance. I love how Steve is portrayed here, flawed but so sweet. It’s a real, slow love story with great character development. I love the way Steve is portrayed in all these stories, so good! And some delicious smut along the way!

Another of my favorite writers (though I don’t think she’s writing any more) is @tropicalcap. The only way I know to describe her storytelling is that it’s effortlessly beautiful. I love, love, love her portrayal of Steve Rogers in all her stories. ALL of them. And they’re all amazing, read them all, but particularly I love (and re-read often) On the Line. I laugh out loud every time, it’s so good. Steve Rogers x Reader throughout her stories have this passionate relationship that’s chill and intense at the same time, and there’s so much beautiful, languid lovemaking – she’s just such a good writer!

@jtargaryen18 – She is one of my very favorite writers. One of her fics was the first I read when I found Tumblr, and she just keeps writing great stories. Though they’re all good, this year I loved and recommend

1) All Heaven in a Rage – this is Steve Rogers x Reader. What starts out as an honest intention to help a girl who has caught Steve’s eye following the Snap becomes a dangerous obsession. While this is a Dark!Steve Rogers, I think it’s such a great and realistic portrayal of what it must have been like for the Avengers after the snap. After the devastating lost suffered at the hands of Thanos, Steve is distraught and he just wants to save someone – his intentions are pure, even if they’re twisted. Such a good story!

2) Out of Darkness – Curtis Everett x Reader – This one is still in progress. Full disclosure – I haven’t seen Snowpiercer. I’m seriously squeamish when it comes to graphic violence and my friends tell me there’s lots of it, but I get the gist of the story and I love this depiction of Curtis. It’s difficult in such a dystopian society but our reader is truly a badass and I love her moxie in this story. Lots of suspense as Reader earns Curtis's trust and they slowly fall in love with plenty of angst and suspense, so good!!!

3) His Inheritance – Mobster Steve Rogers x Mobster Daughter Reader – This series is ongoing and boy, is it a good one. Steve Rogers is at his mobster best in this one but our reader gives him more than he bargained for. She’s not going quietly into the dark world of the mafia. Love this story so far and literally refresh my phone once an hour to see if there’s a new chapter.

My last recommendations are from one of my very favorite writers on Tumblr that wrote my very favorite fanfic ever, Stark Spangled Banner. The writer is what-is-your-plan-today and her OFC Katie Stark and her love story with Steve Rogers is the most incredible thing of beauty. It is truly a writing masterpiece as it weaves through the MCU and its many movies while watching Steve and Katie and their blossoming relationship that becomes tried and true, unconditional love. It’s just so frickin’ good, READ IT. Everything she writes is wonderful but in particular this year I loved

1) Riding High and Riding On – Frank Adler x OFC Felicity “Fliss” Gallagher – This is another fantastic love story with twists and turns, some suspense and some absolutely delicious smut. Fliss is tough, brave and vulnerable, all at once, and she manages to find the soft side of Frank and wrap him around her finger. Love this couple and I was so glad she gave us a sequel.

2) Murder, He Wrote – DARK Ransom Drysdale x Investigative Reporter Reader – This is a twisty, turny dark story that hooks you and then throws you an incredible curve at the end. Our reader has written a story about Ransom Drysdale that he wasn’t thrilled with, and he decides pay her back. Riveting and addictive, you’ll really love this one. Then, you have to read the sequel -

3) Consciousness of Guilt – Andy Barber x Reader from Murder, He Wrote. I love how this relationship develops. It’s so realistic and sweet. Andy is damaged and lonely and our reader is still reeling from her experience with Ransom, and their relationship is a slow developing burn that includes some yummy smut along the way. I love how the characters grow together and are finally able to trust and love - even though there are challenges up until the end. It’s ongoing but close to the end and it’s a must read!

I have to give honorable mention to Leave No One Behind (Ari Levinson x OFC Hannah Horowitz), Too Loose and You’ll Lose It (Jake Jensen x Stella ‘Arty’ Stevenson) and Rock & Roll People in a Disco World (Paul Diskant x Reader). @WIYPT-Writes is the queen of the OFC – she creates people that I think about long after I’m done reading her work. I’m in awe of her talent and look forward to what she has to offer in 2022.

The Batman (2022)

The origin story of Batman always struck me as fit for opera. Imagine it like this: the son of fallen nobles decides to take the mantle of vengeance, and in his adult torment there is the peril of making indistinguishable right and wrong. “And thus is born this weird figure of the dark… this avenger of evil, ‘The Batman’”. Such intense personal conflicts, coupled with unending ethical questions, is fodder for dramatic opera. One can dress the dramatis personae up in costumes from nineteenth century Italy or early twenty-first century Gotham, yet the drama remains. Enter Matt Reeves’ The Batman – the most operatic film adaptation of the Caped Crusader ever made, for better and for worse.

Batman films and television have attempted an ethical dialectic to varying degrees of success. The 1943 serial was American wartime propaganda; the 1989-1997 live-action movies value their villains and unique production design over character development; and Christopher Nolan’s trilogy also doubled down on its villains while attempting to parse Bruce Wayne’s morality rather than his psychology. More than any of its predecessors, Reeves’ adaptation portrays Batman as a cerebral, rather than physical force of nature – a decision which hews this treatment closer to the character’s original characterization than any non-animated Batman before it (see: Batman: The Animated Series and 1993’s Batman: Mask of the Phantasm). Heavy influences from the limited comic book series Batman: Year One and The Long Halloween ensures that this Dark Knight is less of a superhero, more a sleuth.

In the midst of Bruce Wayne’s (Robert Pattinson) second year as Batman, Gotham City Mayor Don Mitchell, Jr. (Rupert Penry-Jones) is assassinated by a figure calling himself the Riddler (Paul Dano). Against his subordinates’ protests, GCPD Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) allows his ally, Batman, to investigate the murder scene. There, Batman and Gordon acquire a thumb drive (Riddler always leaves clues for Batman believing he will always be a step ahead) pointing them to the Iceberg Lounge – a nightclub owned by Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin (an unrecognizable Colin Farrell) and operated by mob boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro). There, Batman will run into Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), who works at the nightclub as a waitress, as he attempts to unearth Riddler’s motivations and ultimate objective.

Also starring in this film is Andy Serkis as Bruce Wayne’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth – who does more problem-solving for the brooding Batman than one might expect.

Ever since Christopher Nolan convinced Warner Bros. that every Batman film needs its protagonist to be unrelentingly dour, filmmakers working with the Batman canon have adjusted for cinematic vitality elsewhere. One hundred and seventy-six minutes is a long time to wallow in the grimness of The Batman. In order to prevent The Batman from becoming a miserable headache to watch, Reeves improves upon Todd Phillips’ attempts to make Gotham a character as the latter accomplished in Joker (2019). The perpetual overcast skies and heavy rain is London or Seattle-like; the discontent and internal suspicion within the bowels of a corrupt GCPD reflect its corrupted core; and its Big Apple-esque public spaces always seem to have anarchical undercurrents. More than ever, Gotham feels like a city unsure and unable to press forward in combating the crime spree and, eventually, the domestic terrorism that it is facing.

Cinematographer Greig Fraser (2012’s Zero Dark Thirty, 2021’s Dune) just misses from a complete triumph here, in his and Reeves’ attempts to characterize Gotham. Fraser’s framing is immaculate and his lighting – less Taxi Driver (1976), more The Long Halloween – replicates the theatrical staging and color grade of a Batman comic book. But Fraser’s insistence on a shallow focus in interior scenes, an approach that is becoming more prevalent in modern tentpole movies, has mixed results. The shallow focus grants one-on-one conversations intimacy, but renders all the backgrounds as a blur. Thus, the funeral scene feels like it is being set in a much smaller space than it actually is. The decision also undermines the sensorial assault of the Iceberg Lounge, depriving it of the visual shock alongside its potent aural effects.    

The screenplay, by Reeves and Peter Craig (2010’s The Town and both parts of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay), does not make much attempt to obfuscate the deadly puzzle the Riddler presents. If one is expecting an impenetrable mystery with unexpected red herrings, the detective letting on less than they actually know, and moral ambiguity, you might want to watch Agatha Christie’s Poirot instead. The Batman is more interested in Bruce Wayne’s deepening awareness in a political and criminal justice systems that reveal themselves to have few redeeming qualities. Worthy reform is not impossible, but extremely difficult in an environment rife with assassination attempts, secretive mob rule (Bruce appears quite surprised to see how deeply the rot here lies), and a police force besieged by hourly violence.

Typically, The Riddler’s actions are set by his ego, plotting violent actions to prove genius intellect against all comers. Reeves and Craig adjust this to make him a political ideologue with a Twitch-like stream. He appears not to outlast Batman in a murderous game of wits, nor is there retribution on the Riddler’s mind. Instead, the Riddler desires to expose the wretched internal workings of Gotham City’s political elite, which has been preventing relief for the city’s downtrodden. Despite these admittedly justified concerns, the Riddler’s means to accomplish his goals are fitted within the framework of a typical superhero movie and the subgenre’s needs for escalation. It also does not help that the Riddler expresses his opinions in a way that recalls the most dedicated adherents of the QAnon conspiracy theory and eventually advocates for actions that result in a third act that strays inorganically and somewhat tediously from everything that came before.

However conflicted the writing and characterization of Dano’s Riddler may be, Reeves and Craig make a wise choice by pairing this Riddler with an inexperienced Batman. Early on his career, Batman’s reputation is a formless one – a vigilante who just so happens to be yet another face waging violence nightly, his opaque intentions (“vengeance”) distrusted by the majority of the GCPD. We, the audience, and the residents of Gotham have no strong feelings for a vigilante who stands only for vigilantism through most of the film. There is no Batman mythos to fear or rouse. There is only a detached and rich young man in a clunky suit (perhaps on purpose, as many previous live-action and animated Batman suits show a flexibility that allows for graceful movement in combat), who shows little interest in anything or anyone else outside of his nocturnal job. Even though the cacophony of the closing threatens to derail Bruce Wayne’s development as a person, The Batman is able to chart his growth in terms of moral responsibility, the nature of his vigilantism, and (as a thematic undercurrent) his understanding of the class stratification in the city. Several times in The Batman, Bruce Wayne will relate his thoughts, presumably from his diary entries. Though some might dismiss this as just more exposition, there is a purpose here. In these instances, the film is taking inspiration from comic books – namely, thought bubbles or the squared internal monologues commonly found dispersed across a story. There, Bruce Wayne relates his growing consciousness of what his desperate home city needs most. It is this writer’s hope that he can better embody those beliefs in the expected sequel.

A strong, though not spectacular, acting ensemble is of great help from fending off the film’s potential tonal blandness. Pattinson is purposefully one-note in The Batman – spoiled, distant, unsociable (a direct contradiction from the usually charismatic-in-public Bruce Wayne). Kravitz is sufficiently mysterious as Selina Kyle, but something feels incomplete with her performance. Is it Catwoman’s assured sexuality or a slyer sense of humor? In any case, Kravitz is a treat to watch. Jeffrey Wright makes a serviceable Jim Gordon – still a mid-level cop (answerable to superiors, but wielding plenty of authority over others) that will someday become the GCPD Commissioner – and Andy Serkis does not leave much of an impression (the aloof behavior of Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne towards Alfred does not help). Paul Dano injects a smidge of his performance as Brian Wilson in Love & Mercy (2014) to mixed results. The runaway standouts among the antagonists are the caked-up Colin Farrell as Penguin and John Turturro as Carmine Falcone. Farrell and Turturro are a study of contrasts. The former unafraid to show his scarred face and to be vocal and vulgar; the latter hiding behind his sunglasses at all times while staying restrained and observant. Perhaps both are leaning too heavily on Italian gangster stereotypes, but they successfully convey the Old Gotham menace – those who ran the city through threat and intimidation before the likes of the Joker, Poison Ivy, and Scarecrow arrive to replace them.

None of these situations or performances would be as compelling without Michael Giacchino’s atypical score. The superhero movie subgenre has, gradually, become hostile to melodic expansion – preferring Hans Zimmer’s approach where he treats orchestras like a drum (DC or Marvel, it matters not). Giacchino (every Star Trek film since 2009, 2009’s Up), whose body of work has resembled little of Zimmer’s, channels Zimmer’s bass-pounding sensibilities and combines it with the orchestrations heard in Batman movies scored by Danny Elfman (1989’s Batman and 1992’s Batman Returns) and Shirley Walker (1993’s Mask of the Phantasm). Amid the oftentimes brutal scoring, there occasionally peeks through a romanticism that would never be possible in a Zimmer superhero score, while Elfman and Walker-like strings, winds, and chimes converse across the film.

Catwoman’s motif is one of the most-played in the film, usually to sultry strings, as it sells the sexual tension between the cat and the bat. In its most complete appearance, the strings accompany a light jazzy piano (recalling John Barry’s score to 1981’s Body Heat), as if yearning for something better in life, away from the long hours and lurid stares at the Iceberg Lounge. There are two headline-grabbing motifs, and both are for the same person. The first, of course, is Batman’s theme (0:00 in “The Batman”). Its main motif is barely a motif – four notes (three repeating tones, then a descending major third) – as it serves more as a rhythmic tool rather than anything of melodic or harmonic interest. This is where Zimmer’s influence is clear, as Batman’s motif is played at a vast range of dynamics depending on the situation (what Giacchino accomplishes with four notes is far less interesting than what John Williams did with two in 1975’s Jaws). More interestingly, is the Bruce Wayne/Gotham theme (beginning 0:27 in “The Batman”). It is an aching idea that steadily grows to include the entire orchestra, encapsulating the tragedy of Bruce Wayne as the film progresses and as this motif displays the most development throughout. The clearest expressions of all of the film’s motifs come in its various suite-like cues. That includes the wondrous “Sonata in Darkness” for solo piano, as performed by UCLA professor Gloria Cheng (1991’s JFK, Star Wars episodes VIII and IX) for the end credits. With his hands in multiple film franchises, it is surprising that Giacchino has not reeled in his sense of invention. The Batman is one of his best scores since Incredibles 2 (2018) and War for the Planet of the Apes (2017).

News of a sequel to this Batman movie quickly followed its release last March. From a musical and visual standpoint, one hopes that the next film will feature a more vibrant Bruce Wayne (well, at least as vibrant as Bruce Wayne could possibly be) in addition to Batman sleuthing. As it stands, Matt Reeves’ The Batman is a breath of fresh air in the Caped Crusader’s film canon after years of mistreatment and misunderstanding of the character’s mythos from Warner Bros. The film’s opera-like dramatic ambition and endless darkness might seem unwelcoming but, thanks to the arresting visuals, performances, and a stunning score, this is the most watchable live-action Batman movie over the last half-decade.

maybe his metabolism just slows down a bit with age

his sedentary job

some stress eating

that new bakery across the street with the ~cute barista~ (are we thinking x reader? Ransom? a Seb character?)

whatever caused it, there's suddenly a layer of fat accumulating on Andy's middle

oh something more like a beer belly

all those late movie nights and all that beer late at night

maybe it just barely brushes the tops of his thighs when he sits down

nice and round and firm

rounds out underneath all his shirts and pulls them tight against his belly

maybe he doesn't notice at first, his slacks are getting uncomfortably tight and all his dress shirts are gaping at the buttons, but he's too stressed lately to focus on anything else really

and then he's sitting in that coffee shop again after he's already eaten lunch and he's drinking a caramel latte and eating a huge cinnamon roll as an afternoon snack

he's shifting around and arching his back to get comfortable, but that just pushed his belly more against his shirt and suddenly he hears this ping

and when he looks down there's suddenly a gut sitting in his lap and his button down is gaping over the widest part of it

how did he not notice gaining weight?

but when he looks around if anyone saw him pop that button, he catches the barista's eye across the room

and they come around to Andy's table and put down a chocolate muffin wrapped in a napkin with the barista's number on it

(oh God sorry this is already so long, but somehow I've never though of dad bod Andy, ugh straining the seams of those tailored suits, ohh throwing around that new weight when he gets angry, his thick waist giving him an even more imposing figure 🤤)

that boy did not grow up knowing any boundaries, just surrounded by abundance, excess and indulgence

breakfast doesn't exist, they're too preoccupied with looks to eat when they can't show off, it's boozy brunch over business dealings

vanity is the only reason Ransom hasn't porked up yet

but the constant dieting and over-exercising has sparked a gnawing hunger inside him, a craving to finally give in and eat his fill

and when he finally gets over that eternal dating phase and puts a ring on someone?

his well-maintained physique is gone in a heartbeat, his abs are basically gone after the wedding night

a married man doesn't need to draw any looks anymore

it's a happy coincidence that his partner likes Ransom's weight gain as well, because he surely wouldn't have gone back to dieting even if they hadn't

he has to retire that big, white sweater from the movie within barely two months

Ransom doesn't just eat until he's satisfied

his greed extends into his eating habits as well

after he experiences it for the first time, he always eats in utter excess until he is completely full

stomach aching, squirming in his seat, stiffling burps and cradling his distented belly

it looks ridiculous at first, a round ball of food tacked to his front

but his body quickly catches up that little overstuffed belly

he slows down a bit once he finally thinks he's caught up on all those years of denying himself

but a good 50lbs have settled on his body at that point

all wide and heavy, plush fat and soft rolls

ohhh I imagine he'd have the softest under belly, all velvety smooth, striped with stretch marks, but Ransom would take care to use lotion on them every day

and in the metaphorical sense too, he mellows out a bit when he's not constantly hangry and two seconds from a binge

he's still an abrasive asshole on the outside most of the time, but you actually get to see his softer side

and even though your marriage was mostly for each of your families' sake you actually fall for each other

getting very "just the two of you against the world"-vibes, very "mob boss and mafia wife" :D
