I have a few autistic characters from various stories and want to do them justice and make sure they're sympathetic characters. I've done research on autism (and plan to do more) and taken that into account when planning their personalities and relationships with other characters. The problem is I'm not quite sure how to apply this to actual writing and write them as clearly autistic without falling into negative stereotypes. Do you have any resources I could use to get started with this?

It might help to be aware of what the stereotypes about autism actually are. There’s a brief overview of stereotypes here and there’s also a list of types of characters we’d like to see more of here.  We also have a stereotypes tag.

In terms of how to apply the research you have done to your writing, it may help to look at an example that I have used before.

A non-autistic example: Think of Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling (yeah, bit of a leap, but bare with me).

In Harry Potter, Harry’s best friend, Ron, is poor by wizarding standards. This does come up at times, but most of the time other things are happening that are more important in the narrative. Growing up poor is important to Ron’s character. It explains some of his insecurities and affects how he behaves, but it is not actually one of his character traits. Ron’s poverty is always there––he doesn’t stop being poor when his story is about helping Harry find Aragog or being Quidditch keeper––but it isn’t usually at the forefront of the reader’s mind.

You can incorporate your character’s autism in a similar way: the autism can be important to the character, but without being important to the plot or usually important to the narrative. Autism can affect your character’s behaviour and perception of the world, but it is not a character trait.

Think about incidents where your character is affected by being autistic. To continue with the Ron analogy, here are some incidents when he is affected by his poverty:-when he can’t afford to buy pumpkin pasties on the train-when Ron’s wand is broken and cannot be replaced-when he has to wear the horrible dress robes

Next, think about ways that being autistic affects their day-to-day life. For Ron and the lack of money, the effects are:-his books and clothes are mostly second-hand-he needs to think carefully about how he spends his money-he is judged by other students

Finally, think about ways that being autistic shapes their attitudes or ways of thinking. Some of the ways that Ron’s attitudes are affected by growing up poor are:-he feels some resentment towards Harry’s wealth-Ron often feels second-best and that he doesn’t measure up-he is self-conscious about his belongings and feels that he is judged for his appearance

I would focus on incorporating autistic traits into how your character interacts with their environment. I wouldn’t necessarily worry about trying to make their behaviour “clearly autistic”–there isn’t just one way to be autistic, and sometimes writers can inadvertently over-emphasise the differences between autistic and neurotypical characters, which can be very othering–instead, focusing on exploring the character’s motivation can help you to create a character which seems realistic.

If you want to help make it really clear that your character is autistic, it helps to call them autistic. This post can help with how to do that.

I’m submitting this for a quick review of my anatomy before I finalize this creature design! (I can draw legs though I swear)

cool design so far! I’d suggest shifting the wing shoulders back so they’re behind the front limb shoulderblades rather than on top of them. the keel (I’m guessing that’s the keel under the ribcage?) would also need to shift back behind the front limbs rather than directly under them

the lower leg on the hind leg is a bit short, so I’d suggest lengthening that. a good tip to keep in mid is that the wrist on ungulate legs tends to be the same height as the heel (along w/ the elbow and knee being at the same height, but u seem to have that down)

the hip looks like it’s a wee bit too vertical, though it’s not necessarily apparent in the style of your outline. just keep in mind that the hips help hold up the spine, so the spine typically lays against a somewhat more horizontal hip structure

Some Creed Stuff Bc he deserves some love and content, and a quick look into his thoughts.

Last session our awesome tiefling rogue Creed experienced some light racism when we left a small town after we finish a recent quest and headed over to our next adventure. Since rual towns aren't used to seeing Tielings too often and he was rasied in a very wealthly home it hit him a little harder, since he just saved their town, he understood the fear in a human's eye when they saw him, but if they looked past his demon like form, and of course flirtatous exterior, he's an all around softie. And yes ,he knew was very in considerate of Symps feelings when he mentioned killimg orcs and taking their gold, he just didn't think the bard was anything like those Orcs, Symp is his best friend, and different from all of those orcs in the cave. And he'll make sure to make it up to him after this whole mess is done and over with.

im really interested in having an indian ringneck (not right now, but in a year or two when i move out) but ive never owned a bird before; should someone who is only heavily bird-experienced get one or as long as i do enough research will i be okay?

I don’t think ringnecks are as high maintenance as macaws and cockatoos, but i’ve only had tiels (and other mod I talked to hasn’t had ringnecks either), so don’t take our word as gospel.

I’ve seen people say there’s no such thing as a starter bird, it depends on what bird fits you best! I think as long as you do a lot of research you should be okay.

ETA: also, please, please adopt! there are so many parrots who need homes and purchasing from breeders only further this problem :(
