As I was brainstorming ideas for a new outfit, I asked myself a simple question: "Why not create a modular outfit like I did with hair before?" This inspired me to design a dress with a top outfit that can be easily paired with other items, as both pieces can be worn separately. I know this might sound a little unconventional, but I just wanted to mix things up and try something new. I hope you're cool with my different ways of doing things and that you're able to put together some really cool outfits.

The "Rosalia (Dress) Skirt" is in the skirt category, and you know what's great about it? You can mix and match it with other stuff or even with some CC, and it still works like a charm. I personally think it looks cute and works well with sweaters, making it an excellent choice for fall outfits. I plan on creating some sweater looks with this dress in the future.

I've included a few examples to give you an idea of how it can be styled, but feel free to make it your own. Check out the photos on the site.

Rest assured that all the items are categorized correctly, but that doesn't take away from their individual shine.

I was so torn between the plastic and metal swatches/specs for "Amanda Earrings" that I just went for both! They're seriously gorgeous and go with pretty much any outfit.

how do you make chainmail as a hobby in the 21st century, sincerely a bored wannabe medievalist who’s been lurking on your blog since the beginning of your pentiment phase

It depends somewhat on what you want to make!

I've found various articles from The Art of Making Things useful for starting out, particularly the ones on the different types of metal and different weave patterns you can use, as well as their basic "getting started" article. I decided to go with European 4-in-1 style mail for my first project, since it's a good beginner weave and Dungeon Meshi is largely European fantasy-inspired, which also helped me determine the general size my rings ought to be since different sizes and thicknesses are better for different weaves.

I ultimately ordered 16 gauge galvanized steel rings with an inner diameter of 5/16" from The Ring Lord for my Laios armor, because it felt like a good material for my budget and the aesthetic I'm going for, and I did enough research to determine that was about the right size/aspect ratio for my project. But you can also order wire and cut your own rings if you're not as pressed for time.

Since I'm basically making the bottom part of a mail shirt (for now -- I'd eventually like to turn it into a whole shirt, which will take more patterning and planning) it's a fairly simple, modular project. You basically just add more rings or chains of rings to your base until it's the size you want. The 4-1 in the name of the weave I'm using comes from the fact that the basic way you link chains is to join together four closed rings with an open ring in the middle, then close the open ring to fasten them all. On the recommendation of the guy from the SCA who gave me a quick lesson the other day, I've been using two pairs of slip-joint pliers to manipulate the ends of the rings in order to open or close them, which has been working great!

It gets a little more complicated if you're making something with any curvature, like a mail hood, since you have to do reductions to get the shape right (making chainmail, it turns out, is weirdly like knitting), but it's really not too difficult or even too expensive a hobby to start -- just time-consuming, but I've been enjoying it so far.

RGM-89 Jegan

State-of-the-art during its first rollout in U.C. 0089 , the RGM-89A Jegan saw the Federation break from tradition. Instead of being an in-house development like previous Federation mass-production units, the Jegan was both designed and supplied by Anaheim Electronics.

Mainly intended to serve as a replacement for the rapidly aging RGM-86R GM III, the Jegan incorporated and improved upon many developments introduced with the RGM-88X Jeddah.

One of the most notable features of the Jegan is its head-mounted Vulcan pod. While previous mobile suits did have head-mounted Vulcan cannons, the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II popularized making these gunpods modular, rather than built in directly as they had been previously.

The standard Jegan A-type would see many refits over its lifespan. Eventually, the A-type was replaced by the RGM-89D, which became the new standard pattern. The vast majority of the D-type's changes were internal and software based, in order to keep the Jegan relevant as mobile suit development advanced.

While the A and D types were by far the most common, the Jegan saw over a dozen variants developed for different purposes, mission profiles, or to serve as testbeds for new technologies.

The Jegan became so ubiquitous during its service history that they could still be seen in service as long as 31 years after their deployment. When the Crossbone Vanguard attacked Frontier IV in U.C. 123, Jegan J-types were seen engaging the Vanguard's cutting-edge mobile suits.

The Jegan was originally designed by artist Yutaka Izubuchi for the 1988 film Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack.

Fashion & Decadence Culture

Fashion is notable on Azil as it is elsewhere, with different groups and cultures having long (or recent) traditions and recognizable styles that are unique to them. On average, modern collective preference wavers between comfortable and practical, to sleek and fashionable, but ever an emphasis on personal expression. Outside of unique places or events, it’s considered rude to judge an individual for their preference of clothing unless it infringes on cultural customs or the comfort of someone aside from the wearer, such as flashing lights in dark places or massive accessories that crowd others. While the exact rules are an understood concept that varies in social settings, the style, color and way one dresses is meant to evoke an idea of personal honesty and feeling, thus any number of fashions can be found in large cultural centers.

Buckles, bags, gadgets, blinkers, baggy pants with a form fit top–in a general sense, neon cyberpunk and eco-future-punk are the go-to ideas for average sensibilities. Runners can be seen sporting any number of athletic-minded modular fashions (zippers are as common as pockets), often in their signature colors, and bots are dressed to show off their mods or patterns in a tasteful manner.

As for formality, suit-and-tie fashion managed to worm its way back through convergent social evolution despite the knowledge of it being lost to history. Crisply ironed shirts and slacks with vests, ascots, chains and coats are considered “black tie” wear, though with certain notable differences from earth’s staple code. Neck decorations are common substitutes for jewelry, with ties being either silk or fractals.

Suit wear, also sometimes referred to “decadence wear”, is not limited to men. While dresses are considered peak femininity to match the pants and tunics of masculinity, cultural variance blurs the lines between men’s and women’s fashion. In Arrimask, skirts are considered high fashion for both sexes with pants also being used by both to facilitate work and comfort; layers are their main take away, with the absence of “workers hems” (pants) being a sign of wealth and status. Many arid locations also use sheath wear and flowing fabric for comfort, thus pants are considered decorative and fashionable as they denote the lack of necessity outdoors where circulation is required to be comfortable. Meanwhile, working class folks favor pants cut loose for mobility and wraps that hold air for carrying and cold weather. To the Weslans, the pants and vests are stern and cut a silhouette they appreciate for matching their formal, direct and militarized system, usually in pristine whites for active duty individuals which mirror their fatigues which are often blacks and dark blues.

A language evolved, as it does, in certain mixed social settings in regard to formal attire not unlike fan culture on earth. Following the “average” rules that are obeyed in all cases where the event is not tied into cultural heritage, these habits popped up in regard to self-expression, intention and other details based on one’s preferences in dress:

The base color means less than the accent colors; a base color is generally flattering but how they choose to accessorize and with what hue is thought to be an expression of personal taste. Warmer hues are welcoming and cooler ones denote a formal attitude.

In cases of suit wear styles, straight cut pants are worn for business and formality while shaped, belled pants with loose bottoms are playful and friendly, welcoming approach while the straight-cuts wish to be the one approaching.

The flamboyance of the attire versus the event is used overall to judge one’s persona with extravagance equating to self-confidence (or self-centeredness). In general gatherings, anyone is welcome to dress however they wish, but in cases where there is a centerpoint patron (weddings, celebrations, birthdays, etc) it is considered extremely rude to upstage them.

Men’s suit wear coats take after trenchcoats, favoring long tails and patterned inside linings while women’s often have bustles or waist trims. Coat length is a mark of formality.

Attached hem-extenders are occasionally used on menswear when coats are too formal, which they then use in the same manner as their coattails. Sweeping a hem between himself and another is a dismissal or disapproval while sweeping it away is an act of welcome; holding the coat end up is akin to holding a door, permitting the one at the “entrance” to approach. Turning quickly or otherwise making the coattails flutter when departing denotes displeasure and a “removal of footprints”, acting as a “do not follow me” marker. Not “sweeping” the floor leaves an invite to pursue or interact later on, particularly if conversation was favorable.

Men who favor shoulder cloaks over coats apply the same techniques.

For women, extenders go on the cuffs, acting as long sleeves they use in similar fashion. Hiding their faces behind their sleeves is an act of coyness but also of privacy, insisting on their conversation not be listened in on. Flicking a cuff hem is a dismissal of topic but balling them into the hand is a withdrawal from interaction; men are expected to back off if this is done, as it equates to “hiking one’s skirt” to cross a puddle. Sweeping one’s arms wide and allowing the cuffs to flow open is a welcome gesture of approach; if the cuffs are then picked up into the hand, it is a sign of engagement and to not be disturbed. Cuffs left to hang means “interaction welcome” even if the wearer is already involved with discussion. Bringing the hands together in such a way that they are covered by the hems is a polite dismissal of interaction or end of a conversation where either party may disengage. Hands left together in this way when attempting to approach is a hard ‘no’ to the approacher (visible hands is an invitation to talk).

For women favoring dresses, scarves or elegant sleeves are used for the same effect.

A lack of hem extensions removes this communication method and default to the ‘straight leg’ rules.

In formal gatherings where connection is favorable (mixers, company parties, galas, etc) it’s not uncommon to bring “favors”, which are as simple as silk cuts that match the accent color of one’s attire or other such things that act as tokens of interest. The context and meaning of receiving one is heavily dependent on the gathering and discussion held, but generally equate to an invitation to get together after the event ends. Business cards are the most common as they hold contact information that can be used at any time, but other favors are used to request company after the main event or even to “exit” together which can be a declaration of interest and visibility (i.e. if you’re seen leaving together it can be quite a scandal or subtle way to imply business ventures or courting). The return of a favor at any point is a rebuke of attempted affection or the desired deal.

In some cases, it’s considered a game to see who can pass a favor without drawing attention, leaving them in pockets, the palm or otherwise attached to their receiver. Adding up favors after an event is a bit of fun for school-age individuals.

This “speaking with motion” culture arose to save face by not drawing attention with yelling. It is considered extremely impolite to invalidate a silent command (don’t follow, drop the subject, etc) without good reason and to cause a scene (yell, cry, etc) is viewed as poor taste/low class. In most cases where there is not an obvious reason to do so, the one causing a fuss will be seen as the aggressor for their shameful behavior, thus it helps to keep everyone on their best behavior to know (sort of) that causing a scene when insulted or rebuffed will not win them any sympathy. (This doesn’t always work but generally it’s understood that way).

The host retains the right to dismiss anyone for any reason and is exempt from the “causing a scene” rule, as part of the host’s duties is to maintain harmony, levity and safety during the event. Sometimes that means publicly shaming someone.

Levels of formality (the minimum level of dress required):

“Tieless” is the least formal kind of party, equivalent to “dress casual” where one dresses well but without adhering to decadence policy.

“Button formal” necessitates a dress shirt and slacks but is otherwise considered informal. Accessorizing is minimal. Button formal is considered appropriately minimal for holidays and birthdays or social gatherings.

“Vested” or “three-cut” is the most common level of formalwear, requiring a nice shirt, vest and slacks; “three cut” is taken from the idea of each piece being tailored to the wearer and to have three pieces in a set is “classy”. Certain exceptions exist for cultural garments and most will equate standard formality for that group to this level. Substituting waist cinches or corsets for vests, blouses for button ups and skirts for slacks is acceptable; long skirts are less common than short ones, with knee-length being the average. Long socks or leggings/tights are considered classy and clean as opposed to bare legs.

“Covered”, “coated” or “pressed sleeves” is a fancy affair that requires a coat, shawl, cape or other outer covering. Attendees can accessorize as readily as they wish, and while coats may not remain on (sometimes they are taken to keep them safe, particularly at dinner parties) having one is the expected minimum. Short hems are the norm with extensions often used during social hours if coats are not kept. Wearing full hems to a coated event is considered extravagant. This is the most common “high formal” kind of event (high formal means having a full outfit: shirt, pants, vest and coat).

“Cotique” or “gilded” is the highest formality with emphasis on socializing. Accessories are in full display and coats/hems can be worn full-length as they are expected to be used extensively. Many of these events do not have full dinners, relying on small eats and drinks throughout the night to avoid discarding the overcoat. At one time these gatherings were more common but now they are special events, often put together by niche groups (think of ballroom dances) or for certain social gatherings of high society.

Substitutes/exceptions:

Blouses can be swapped for button shirts; corsets or waist cinches can be substituted for vests; skirts can be substituted for slacks.

Capes can be substituted for coats.

Short coats equate to single-shoulders

Long coats equate to full-shoulders

While it is not forbidden to hide one’s face, “masquerade” does not exist as we know it. Adding a layer of mystique, a masked individual often does so for privacy. In high formality events, masks are worn by security to “hide” them and not distract from the event, thus a guest wearing one is both suspicious and alluring.

Likewise, gloves are a form of communication tool. Wearing them at high-formal events acts much like straight-cut pants and can be used if one is wearing bell hems but prefers minimal interaction or a form of difference. The pants say “greet me, I am friendly” however the gloves prevent assumptions, acting as a barrier to the interaction. Dancing with gloves is shorthand for “this is merely out of politeness” and not to be taken further; parent-child dances, friendly dances, etc, are gloved. Gloveless dancing is considered more intimate, implying a desired connection, though this has fallen out of favor in modern times for being “too much”. Nowadays, gloveless dancing is the norm while gloved dancing is seen as unusual but retains its original meaning, as instead of attending with gloves already on, one would put on the gloves as a deliberate act of intention.

Cultural clothing and mannerisms are to be treated with respect and in cases where formality is not known, it is considered polite to ask. What is not polite is to call into question the taste of the wearer or insinuate they are low-class for having different standards than oneself (though it still happens).

Ball gown dresses act as entire ensembles for the “vested” look with shawls, scarves or certain coat styles acting as the gilded level coat requirement. Generally speaking, the eye-catching manner of dresses is usually reserved for hosts or guests of honor so they are easy to pick out in the crowd but this is usually noted in invitations that dresses are not permitted for these reasons.

Introducing a spell type I've been developing for a while: Mana Weaves.

As an introduction, a Mana Weave is working on the Principal of Mana's Centrality, or the idea that Mana is the substance of magic, and the matter your soul is made of. Under this philosophy, the process of casting spells of any kind is understood to be an act of Mana Manipulation. In the Mana Manipulation framework of practice, the Law of Three Fold applies, though I've found in my own experience that there are two ways to cast: cast with the ambient Mana in the environment, or cast with your own Mana, and the universe is much less quick to smack you if you cast from your own Mana.

Problem: I need to science up my magic by compulsion, I need to understand and iterate, but that takes a lot of Mana to use.

Solution: Mana Weave creates a bubble of partially your Mana and partially the ambient Mana, and it amplifies it in a contained work station in three dimensional space.

Setup: (only necessary to do once per wand)Take a dedicated wand and meditate, focus on bonding the wand to you so you can feel it as a part of your Mana essence. For this to work, this wand must be made so close as to feel like another organ in your soul's body. Then, find a point on your wand and ensure it is a point where you can easily place your index finger on on your dominant hand and hold it there for extended periods of time. (If you've played VRChat and used the markers, this is the rough visualization you're going for.) Focus your Mana from your belly and visualize it following a path around your heart and down your arm, into your hand and wand, then draw that path out from the tip of the wand. This is to give a focusing point. After creating that path, focus on moving the line where your fingertip rests in 3D Space to instead be bonded to your fingertip. Then, once the line is set, focus on cutting the points either side of the wand so that the path is a broken circuit. Once the connection is severed, that point where the line is bonded to your finger lets you complete the circuit and allow Mana Flow in a controlled way.

NOTE: Ensure you draw that Mana line through the point where your finger will rest on the wand and ensure that point is not at the tip of the wand.

Function: Ley lines naturally firm when Astral Caves flow near enough the Physical Plane for Mana to flow thick through the planar barrier. Over time it creates a selfperpetuating cycle of Mana from the Astral and Physical Planes blend and create a vortex. This vortex flow creates a field that sucks in Mana and amplifies it's energy output, or a "Locational Mana Density Shifting Field" that increases the Mana Density of an area that functions as a storage location, and thus amplifies the output energy draw and thus stronger magic you can cast. This weave functions by creating an artificial network of Ley lines in an ordered and repeated pattern as opposed to the more chaotic and random patterns of the natural ones. This allows the field it creates to be stronger and more structurally sound while being shrunken down.

Procedures: Take your wand and draw a mesh in 3D Space, then draw a circle around it while focusing your intention on bonding the mesh into a solid three dimensional weave. After this, you can draw circles in the air and draw Glyphs inside them. When creating the circles, focus your intention on letting what's put inside move as one piece that can jigsaw into place with other circles. (This last part is the foundation of my craft. All of my spells are comprised of Sigil Glyphs that can work together as building blocks. Think molecules and letters for how this modular images system interlocks together.) Place each Glyph in the weave and the Glyphs will draw from the Mana your weave draws in from both the environment and from you. The weave creates a self contained bubble that gives a space of super strong amplified Mana output, but fully workable as a work station safe enough for novices to practice most lone witch spells. After you place the Glyphs into position, place the Mana Weave in it's place wherever the spell requires, and then you just put a tiny bit of your own Mana into the weave to activate it.

Example Spell: Potection of My Soul

Cast Mana Weave around head and place the Glyphs inside, then grip the weave and mold it to your head shape, ensuring it is completely immersing your head in the Mana Weave boundary. Doing this ensures the effected enclosed space creates a saturation therapy of sorts and ensures that the spell is saturating your head, amplifying it and ensuring it's effects permeate your flesh. This can also effect the entire body, just mold the weave to the body and head together instead.

Where do you get your paper from and how do you create the specific sizes?

hehe this is a common question but I'll bite again

Amazon is a decent first stop I guess, but really you just want to hop into any stationery shop while at any mall. With modulars, quantity is often more important than quality. In the origami world good quality paper is mostly valued for large, complex single-sheet models, but for modulars all you really need is the right thickness and a bit of friction. There's a consensus that the best quality paper for modulars is along the lines of tant or stardream, but they're usually special orders that ship in inconvenient sizes or quantities.

Conversely, modulars need quantity, because if you only have 2 sheets of a pattern (which sometimes happens in the fancy packs), you won't be able to fold 30 units from it. I often need to buy multiple copies of the same pack to get reasonable quantities. So, unless you have a really demanding model - the bulk pack is fine. Just get what looks good: simple patterns, harmony, kami. And you can even get by for many years, as I did, with just sticky notes or colored printer paper (astrobrights brand).

For cutting I mostly just fold to size and tear, possibly with a template. It's very rare I need a ratio that's not easily foldable, and also very rare to have paper not tearable. I used to use a guillotine but it wasn't more accurate - maybe a more industrial one you'd find in an office would work better. The smartest folks use a razor as such:

Double Wrap Belt - to hold Many Things. Most of this belt is complete with progress photos to be posted soon. All that's left to do here is sew around the entire border for longevity and finish. I attached the buckle and belt keeper with snaps instead of rivets so the hardware could be changed out for other cosplays. I am creating a guide on how to make a double wrap / super long belt (it usually requires seaming two belts together).

Button Pouch - Completed Photos - Progress Photos & Buy Guide - This is a belt attachment designed to hold buttons to hand out at comic con.

I'm making my own pattern for this to exactly match her level 10 flask and I'm very excited! It's got such fun cut outs. I'm considering selling these with a flask if there is interest since I made the pattern entirely from scratch.

Belt Bag - I am so in love with the shape of this little bag I am so excited to make this. I am going to make my own pattern for this and size it up a bit so Gabe can hide their phone in there, and I'm going to make it so the lace wrap at the front is purely decorative with a hidden snap closure for easier phone access.

Two Brown Belts On Top Of A Black Belt - Even though I try to usually make my cosplay leather projects more modular / more adaptable for other cosplay or day to day use, this is So Specific and it's got to be designed to sit right despite all the stuff attached to it via rope / ribbon. My plan is to make a thick (3-4 inches?) black belt/panel (with corset lacing in the back). I decided to directly attach the two brown belts to the corset belt so they'd stay in place and so I can hide rivets to support the ribbon with stuff on it and due to the fact that I'm using 3D printed belt buckles that are decorative rather than functional. Currently On Hiatus - her new outfit fucks so hard (and I'm a black leather girlie at heart) so I set aside a bunch of already done cosplay work to pivot but I will get back to this. The plan here was to be as accurate as possible to her level 3 official art.

Waist Double Layer Belt / Harness - I have a design already worked out for this that very closely mimics the design in the official art. I planned for it to be modular so that you could snap the harness on and off as well as detach the belt pouch so it might be flexible for use in other cosplays/adventure core wear.

Coin Pouch - Completed Photos - I modified a pouch pattern to add the x criss cross lace detailing down the one side. This was my first ever leatherworking project.

Knife Thigh Holster

Project Note: Dyeing leather light brown/saddle brown is not very forgiving (I really hecked up my belt dip dye the first time) so if possible buy the leather already dyed the right color or practice on darker colors first is my recommendation to save yourself some heart ache (or, like, actually use dye reducer and dye in multiple passes but I couldn't figure out how I was going to store a bunch of reduced dye in my tiny apartment so c'est la vie)

Level 13

Knife Thigh Holster (but black & gold this time) - also a custom design. I'm giving this an attachment via swivel clip to my belt loop to act like a garter belt and keep the holster from sliding down. Instead of fucking around with tooling when I don't have time to learn a whole new skillset, I'm cutting a second thin layer of leather to add 3d moon and star embellishments.

Leather Corset - I'm probably modding an existing leather corset since I don't know if I'm Emotionally Ready to make one from scratch. Her corset doesn't look like it has boning but I want mine to because I like the structure. Trying to find gold moon hardware that doesn't have a face on it may be the death of me (why moon buckle have face on it!?!) - Update: I've decided to table this for this year and use a plain black corset that fits me well. I'll probably return to this as a later upgrade to the cosplay.

And Then What?

Jester Level 2 and whatever else my partners decide to cosplay next year. I also have some non-cosplay leather projects on the docket but I'll leave that for another post.
