The new minecraft usage guidelines from mojang are actually fucking bonkers
Imagine a pasta company saying "um, if you don't follow our guidelines, and don't put a disclaimer before every meal stating that you are not affiliated with our brand, we have the right to revoke your pasta rights and will break and enter your house to take the pasta back"
Bitch I paid for the product it's mine now. It's cooking in the pot and you don't want me to have a good meal

Not me wondering why everyone is mad about the updated Minecraft Usage Guidelines (web archive link) since I'm not seeing HALF of the things being complained about on the updated Guidelines?
Like, the fluff are you on about with Server player queues being banned? I'm not seeing ANY HINT of that on the updated Guidelines???? o_0
(also can people stop mixing up Minecraft's EULA with Minecraft's Usage Guidelines please)

the disclaimer similar to the following: “NOT AN OFFICIAL MINECRAFT [PRODUCT/SERVICE/EVENT/etc.]. NOT APPROVED BY OR ASSOCIATED WITH MOJANG OR MICROSOFT” on your product, listing, description, website/webpage, and all other related materials.
Additional note for any copyright goblins, verbatim from the new guidelines: If you decide you want to share your creation with the community, you may do so... This applies, for example, if you want to set up and run any non-commercial blogs, servers, community forums, fan sites, fan clubs, news groups, events, and gatherings.

This is huge for Minecraft lore.
Found this through Shamwarizim_ on YouTube, Mojang's Minecraft Principles book has been uploaded onto the Internet Archive.
We now have access to all of Mojang's thoughts and guidelines for their future plans. There's a lot of stuff that obvious, like no blood or gore and personified mobs. There's also stuff that we already knew, like all real creatures being passive or neutral, and the things Jens showed from this book in 2020.
But there's a section towards the end of anecdotes: the story of how poppies and roses came around; how Illagers were thought up; how the repeater was created; the principles of the Beacon and how they see it as kind of a mistake; why they added charcoal as an alternative for coal; and 1 last story.
That last anecdote has actual lore behind it, and it involves everyone's favourite 3 block tall creepypasta. This book literally says what the goal of the Endermen is, entirely why they do what they do:
Tumblr media
So they're immortal (knew it!), but that's so huge. It answers so many questions. It also brings up new ones - like why are they doing this?
Now we just need to find the book that has the Trail Ruins lore in it.
Oh yeah, and here's the link to the book. I guess they give it to new employees.
And here's the guy who I found this out from:

Welcome to the Sunshine Institute, I’ll be your Warden.
An MCSM ask blog run by @afishnamedvish!
How kind of you to drop by, I’ve been awaiting another fool’s arrival. So, what have you done now to… disgrace the Admin?
[Forgot to feed the birds]
[Stole too many emerald blocks]
[Won a battle of wits]
[I’m not sure]
Not sure? How interesting. Well, it is my occupation to tell you exactly what you’ve done incorrectly. Here, let me see…who you are, and we’ll get some answers…
Tumblr media
How curious, I cannot seem to find a… singular name to you. No matter, it becomes a simple choice. I’ve had…worse.
I may as well acquit you with my crew if you wish to join the elites of the Admin’s hand. You may as well find a uniform that fits. And don’t try anything stupid; I don’t treat thieves and liars well.
[Ticket Filing]
Due to a sudden…surplus in activity within the Institute, I recommend you firstly schedule a meeting if you wish to talk. You may use my ticket (ask) system to keep yourself in the loop.
Here are some guiding topics you can look for (tags):
Warden’s meeting summaries - Answered lore tickets.
Warden’s solved tickets - Answered asks; lore-neutral/comedy.
Warden mutters - Bits of information; may or may not have lore.
Warden baubles - Little fun facts that may or may not contain headcanon material.
Warden approves - Positive (with an ask) comments.
Warden disproves - Negative (with an ask) comments.
Warden’s wall-worthy art - Reblogging art/posting art (of the Warden).
Warden’s emphasis - Reblogs.
Warden’s task (NEW) - Congrats, you asked about what you’re in for and now you’re informed. (User asks/tagged anon asks)
And don’t forget my reputation system: if you settle on my good side, you’ll be treated…less harsh by the associates and myself. Continuous bad behavior will not amount positively to you (users/tagged anons consistent asks) Now that you’re informed about how to reach me properly, I will show you what improper form is.
[Abiding terms]
Remember, you’re here to make good on the Admin’s side. I cannot believe I have to say this, but several Guests have tried these things. It’s unfortunate. Do not go about harassing other Guests or Associates, or you will be removed from your new lounge and sent somewhere less pleasant. Do not threaten me or any of my members, nor shall you intend harm upon anyone regardless of their charges or history. Do not interact with intent of profane or malicious behaviors; I do not accept bribes of any kind, nor will I tolerate any form of retaliation against these guidelines.
You are here to be reformed, and maybe one day, you’ll become his champion.
Welcome to the Institute.
[DISCLAIMER]: I am not affiliated with MOJANG or TellTale Studios in any way! This is simply a meme/“role-play” account derived from a character produced in association with MOJANG and TellTale. All copyright and trademarks belong to the respective companies.
[Please remember the person behind the blog! I am human! I have feelings and opinions and may not be comfortable with every ask! If I do not answer your ask, it is because I was not comfortable with it.]

hi there! i was wondering if you had any plans to restock the cyan minecraft axolotl sticker in the near future?
Hm, okay. I would really like to restock the axolotl stickers (they are selling quite well!) but I am also trying to adhere to the Minecraft usage guidelines (which you can read here, scroll down to the bit about handcrafted goods.) Game companies allowing for fan merch is pretty rare so it's really cool that Mojang has a policy that allows for fan merch! Maybe it's a bit naive, but I hope sticking to the policy might inspire other companies to create more lax fan merch policies!
But... for handcrafted products Mojang only allows for fans to sell 20 items featuring one original design. Which is really low! (I get the impression that usage guideline writers had bigger, more labor intensive, more expensive items in mind when writing that policy and not like, a sticker). I think there are two options moving forward:
We all email Mojang asking to change their usage policy to allow for more items to be sold. Or create a new section of the policy that allows for smaller items like prints and stickers to be sold in higher quantities.
We interpret "substantially similar" to be more broad. The policy notes that substantially similar designs will be treated as one design. But.. what does "substantially similar" mean? It's so vague! Are the different colors of axolotl stickers "substantially similar?" I don't know!! I can take rules quite literally so I don't know if this is a situation where I'm reading too strict of a definition into the rules. Do you think the different color axolotl stickers are "substantially similar?" Or are they different enough to be called their own designs? If so I can increase my stock to 20 each for each color but I don't know... I really don't know....
TL;DR: I don't know

Inspired by @doyouknowthismcyt I wanted to highlight some of the more obscure MCYTers that I enjoy
This is part 1, where I decided to pick three completely different but equally unique and interesting channels:
PiroPito (nana825763)
PiroPito has one of the most fascinating Minecraft let's plays I've ever seen, because he refuses to look up any hints or guides. His goal is to figure everything out based on the game itself. He's been playing since 2017 and he's still going (altho slower these days).
He has gotten spoiled a couple of times (mostly by his nieces who sometimes show up in his videos to be little menaces) but overall he's literally figuring everything out just using ingame guidelines, which Minecraft famously has very little of (and even less so when he started out).
Sometimes he misses some really basic things or develops some wacky misconceptions, but he's also really smart and very good at deducing stuff based on the smallest of hints. It's a joy to watch him figure things out. And it really changes your perspective on the game like no other series.
He also has an absurd level of patience and tenacity, and a little bit of an obsessive personality, which you really need in order to thrive with a challenge like this.
The Mojang team have also mentioned being inspired by his series:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Video rec: (you should watch from the beginning but if you want a quick taste, here's a fun one of him trying to figure out nether portals via trial and error)
youtube
Playlist rec:
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbqkLu2V1bJJUQ2aLZjFdz8decGs1kHg-&si=w_tQ3JyJ6JvI4emd
Squibble
Squibble is a redstoner who specialises on stupid and useless machines and bizarre obscure mechanics. Their creations are almost always either too impractical to ever build in survival or just entirely pointless in the first place, like absurdly elaborate ways to display text, 3D printers, flying machines that count distance based on hoe durability or the fastest way to automatically destroy the largest amounts of iron (the anti-iron farm)
The videos are never longer than they need to be, they're presented with a lot of dry humour, and the dedication to optimising completely ridiculous contraptions is just beautiful to watch. They will regularly reiterate how impractical or useless their projects are and then put hours and hours of hard work into making them the best versions of themselves.
(They're actually a lot like Zedaph in theory but not at all in terms of presentation. Zedaph in a different font, I guess)

Gneiss Name
Gneiss is a real life geologist who makes videos explaining geology via Minecraft and analysing Minecraft from a geological perspective. His videos are really cool because he's also a skilled coder and he makes cool displays ingame to help demonstrate what he's talking about, and he uploads the worlds so you can tour them yourself. They're like virtual science exhibits.
He also talks about colour theory a lot, also with cool displays and coding magic.

ok but can we talk about how mojang is now officially endorsing p2w servers on their official server list
those p2w servers not only violate their usage guidelines but they promote gambling and use every god damn dark path they can think of to get children to spend as much money as possible.
they already did it on bedrock but now its also on java… sometimes it feels like microsoft just want to destroy java and the community that was built around it

Minecraft's New Usage Guidelines Are Extremely Stupid And Dangerous, And Here's Why
Hello everyone, and welcome to a section by section breakdown of Minecraft's new usage guidelines. I do not have an education related to law or legal terminology, but I know enough to know that these usage guidelines are stupid, and downright dangerous when you get down to it.
Let's get started, shall we?
(Long post under cut)
Purpose
Tumblr media
This section does not have many issues on its own, I'm mostly providing it for context. But, I do think that it is ridiculous that they count 'any names which are confusingly similar to our name' as part of 'their name'.
And pay attention to the assets section. That'll be important later.
Target Audience
Tumblr media
So. I don't think banning non profits from hosting events to raise awareness using your game as a medium is a great idea. Everything else I can get, but the non profit clause strikes me as weird.
Also, this would likely apply to projects like The Uncensored Library, a project created as a collaboration between Blockworks and Reporters Without Borders. Anti-censorship is an 'agenda unrelated to Minecraft', and both of the organizations involved would fall under the groups they say cannot use Minecraft to promote an agenda.
While I understand that Minecraft likely wouldn't go after The Uncensored Library, it is discomfiting that this section appears to say that Minecraft cannot be used as a platform to promote awareness and change, at least by non-individuals.
Legal Agreements
Tumblr media
It's good that these guidelines do not form part of the legal policies. However, I do not like the last sentence, as it implies that if they decide it is not a 'good idea' they will not 'allow leniency with respect to how you use Minecraft.'
Subject To Change
Tumblr media
While it is common practice to have the guidelines be subject to change, most services will inform you when they change. Minecraft does not appear to be planning to do that. Also, it is unbelievably tone deaf for them to count any part of this document as having 'good intentions' with what we'll get into later.
All Uses
Tumblr media
"If we don't like what you are doing." That is quite possibly the most concerning sentence in this entire document. That leaves them so much room to get rid of anything that they 'don't like'. What if they decide they don't like The Uncensored Library? Or if they dislike a particular content creator, so they revoke their ability to monetize content based in the game? It is also a ridiculously unprofessional statement.
Also, "feel free to make requests"? This is just asking for people to attempt to put hateful guidelines in this document. As we'll discuss later, some of the guidelines already provide a platform for hate.
Essential Guidelines
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is just a summary, but I'll use it to talk about some of the issues.
"Do not be obscene." This applies even if you are on a private server, as far as I can tell. Policing what users do on private servers is again, ridiculous. If they are on a private server and using swear words or making obscene builds, they have in fact consented to see that content. You should not censor what users are doing privately.
They don't want you to include gambling or violence. What does this mean for PVP? For chance based games on servers? This cannot end well.
The disclaimer. I get that they are trying to cover their legal bases, but I honestly think that this is stupid. The people that use it aren't the ones who Mojang are worried about, and the people that won't use it, won't use it.
I'll talk more about the other issues in the sections specific to them, but trust me, it gets worse.
"We are trying to be open, honest, and most importantly, trusting."
I don't feel very trusted right now, what with the insane restrictions, Mojang/Microsoft.
Naming Guidelines
Tumblr media
Great to know that no one can name their videos things like "Minecraft- How to find netherite" anymore.
Also, "don't use any other aspects of any of our brand or assets as part of any related branding, including as a logo or part of a logo."
So, no one can use any Minecraft assets in their channel icons, anymore. Remember how the assets include stuff like all the blocks? Heck, they would probably count DanTDM's old logo as disallowed under this policy.
Also, it's again, horribly unprofessional to use "(we're cool with this)" and "(we're not cool with this)"
This is supposed to be a guideline for how to use their brand, assets, and name in an 'acceptable' way. They tell you to contact a lawyer if you're unsure about what the guidelines mean. I'm pretty sure most lawyers would laugh their ass off at the wording in this.
Personal Use
Tumblr media
That's not what commercial means. For something to be commercial, it quite literally has to have the intent of making money.
So if someone has a Tumblr blog, devoted to talking about Minecraft, that they do not make money off or intend to make money off, is counted as a 'commercial thing'. Again, very unprofessional wording there.
So, let's take a look at those commercial guidelines.
Commercial Use
Tumblr media
The commercial use section has multiple subheadings, and as such we'll go over them one at a time, starting with the first section.
Again, commercial does not mean any content that you publicly share. Commercial means something created and shared with the purpose of making money. Content shared for free, with no intention of making money, does not qualify as commercial use.
But they are counting it as such.
Let's start in on these guidelines.
In General & Domain Names And Websites
Tumblr media
(I combined these two because the first is so short.)
In General just says not to break any laws, which is totally fine.
Now, let's look at that domain name stuff.
"Your website only relates to the Minecraft game." So, if I mention a third party game at all, even in passing, I'm in violation of this. Cool.
"Any third party advertising does not harm our brand." You haven't defined what that means. Also, what the heck is someone meant to do if they run the website through a service that puts ads on websites run through it? Or, if they post a video related to Minecraft, that advertises for a third party brand that you would consider 'harmful to our brand'? Is it on the website owner to make sure that every little thing they post perfectly aligns with what you consider acceptable for the brand?
Constructed Promotions
Tumblr media
Oh, so individuals aren't allowed to promote charitable causes either, I guess. Or events.
Unless, of course, they gain written approval from Mojang or Microsoft.
Just think about that. You'd need written approval to build something referencing a specific charity, and post it on Reddit. You'd need written approval to make a skin that had the Make A Wish logo. You'd need written approval to build a Minecraft version of Tesco on stream.
Oh, and let's not forget, you would need written approval to post a build of anything from a movie, TV show, or video game.
Because they define anything shared publicly as being under commercial use, that means that you can't build and post a pixel art of your favorite anime character. That's not allowed. You need written approval.
You can't build the Upside Down from Stranger Things, and post it to Youtube. That's not allowed. You need written approval.
You can't build a tribute to Peewee Herman, whose actor Paul Reubens recently died, and post it here on Tumblr. That's not allowed. You need written approval.
This may be the stupidest part of these whole guidelines.
Videos, Streams, and Screenshots
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Are they seriously saying that you're not allowed to monetize content that doesn't have voice over? As fireb0rn said in his video on this subject, "What about speedruns?"
The first few viral Minecraft videos didn't have commentary. And they want to make it so you can't monetize the type of videos that built this community.
Also, apparently you're not allowed to charge money for Minecraft events using big screens to showcase gameplay, or anything displaying gameplay in public. Neat. What about conventions? (Oh don't worry, we'll talk about conventions later.)
"Sponsors and any callouts must be suitable for children and minors." There are multiple groups in the US, where Minecraft and Microsoft are based, that think that transgender people's existence isn't suitable for children. Hell, there are people who think that gay people's existence isn't suitable for children. This rule could be used to push queer content creators out of the game very, very easily.
Even discounting that, can a streamer take a sponsorship for a first person shooter game? Remember, they don't want you to include 'violence' in anything relating to their brand. Can a Youtuber take a sponsorship for a self-help product? Would that count as unsuitable for children, because it discusses mental health? Where is the line?
It seems like they're going to go after anyone who's put Minecraft content on subscription services. So, people like Aphmau may be in trouble. Twitch creators who put content about Minecraft behind a subscription will be in trouble. This honestly feels like a great way to drive away some of the most popular creators currently involved in the Minecraft community, but I guess Microsoft hasn't been thinking about that.
Live In-Game Events
Tumblr media
So, how are y'all planning to shut down live events taking place on private servers, that are being streamed? Is it terminating people's accounts? I have a feeling it's terminating people's accounts.
Also, great to know that all the constructed promotions bullshit applies here, too.
In-Person Events
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh boy, this one is a doozie.
Let's start with the fact that they are functionally banning conventions, unless of course you have an official partnership with Microsoft.
Heads-up, banning conventions will not help grow the community, Microsoft. It'll do the opposite.
Also, these guidelines are...interesting.
The 150 people limit means that a standard elementary school couldn't host an all grades (Ages 6 through 12) party themed around Minecraft, without entering into an official partnership with Microsoft. You see why that's insane, right?
And again, you can't use any assets on marketing materials. That includes all blocks and mobs.
This is insane. They say that this is to keep community gatherings from 'becoming commercialized'.
It seems likelier to me that this is to make sure that if an event is going to be 'commercialized', to turn a profit, a significant amount of that profit will go directly to Microsoft, through their partnership program. That's why they're requiring it. Not out of some 'good of their hearts' instinct to protect the community from big, bad advertisers.
Music and Audio
Tumblr media
Yeah, pretty sure this means you can only use royalty free music. Which is fine, but I have one question:
Does this apply to note blocks?
Would I not be allowed to create note block songs, unless I obtained proper copyright permission.
I know that under copyright law, I would be allowed to under fair use, as it's transformative, but-
Does Microsoft agree?
Servers and Hosting
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Great, there goes half of the popular servers.
Because loot boxes count as gambling.
Say bye to any server that uses them.
Seriously, what does the violence rule mean? Is PVP allowed or not?
How is someone supposed to make sure pirated accounts don't access their server?
I'm pretty sure that under these rules, you're not allowed to run subscription tiers on your servers, as that would qualify as 'charging different amounts'. And I know that some popular servers do that.
And you're not allowed to have "Explicit lyrics, or other unsafe/mature content." Basically, everything has to be perfectly child friendly. And we've already discussed why I don't like that.
And what the hell do they mean by "unsafe/mature content."? What counts as 'mature'? Does saying 'hell' count? Does mentioning depression? Does saying that you're gay? Is it anything that the strictest parent would object to? I know teenagers who aren't allowed to watch a video that even mildly references anything mildly objectionable. Like references to partying. These guidelines need better definitions, if they want anyone to take it seriously.
"In short, don't do evil things to players and you'll be fine." This is wildly unprofessional and vague.
Extended Functionality and Modifications
Tumblr media
Mmm.
So, if I use part of their mob AI code in my mod, to make it a bit easier to code my own original mob, does that violate this? What do they count as substantial?
Also, they can just decide that something 'doesn't count as a mod' and take it offline or sue the creator.
And while this is overall reasonable (I don't want people locking skins behind NFTs either!), I don't think that restricting modding is the solution they need here. I especially don't think that they should have the authority to say what is a mod and what isn't.
Books and Other Publications
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again with not using any 'assets' anywhere. Seriously, this is unreasonable. That includes every block and mob.
And of course, you're not allowed to use the word Minecraft unless it's a 'secondary title'. And it can't be in the official font. Yay.
Oh, and you must include 'enough of your own unique content'. What does that mean? Their examples leave something to be desired. Does a book explaining Redstone count as 'unique content'? Oh, and would this apply to fan-run magazines? I don't know if we currently have any going, but I want to know.
"(we're not cool with that)" great to know that I'm no longer allowed to sell any merch using your assets.
Well, any printed merch.
Oh wait.
Hand-Crafted Products
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Great to know that we're not allowed to sell anything using any of the assets, unless it's subtle. Lovely that all of those great stickers of stylized diamond blocks aren't allowed anymore.
Oh, and we can't sell remixes of Minecraft sounds or music now. Or monetize it at all, in all likelihood.
Oh and let's not forget.
You're not allowed to sell more than twenty pieces of merch of any specific design.
What the fuck.
Seriously? They're restricting how much of your own damn product you can sell?
You can't make more than 5000$ off it, either.
This is going to ruin lives.
That is not hyperbole.
There are vendors who make the majority of their money off of Minecraft related merch and designs. This is going to cause so many problems on the convention scene, not even bringing into account the aforementioned ruining lives.
In Summary
Tumblr media
This will be my summary, as well.
These guidelines do not help me understand what you do and do not want people to do.
They are overly vague in some sections, and overly restrictive in others.
These guidelines are pushing to make anything even remotely related to Minecraft entirely child friendly.
These guidelines are ripe for abuse.
Some people don't consider trans people 'child friendly'. Some people don't consider opposing views 'child friendly'.
You are taking away people's livelihoods.
And for what?
To try to prevent the game from being commercialized?
Newsflash, you're the top-selling game world wide.
You're already commercialized.
These guidelines are idiotic, and actively hinder the community that has been built around Minecraft.
If you don't backtrack, and quick, you are going to lose content creators.
You are going to lose players.
You are going to lose the community.
To my fellow players, spread this.
Make sure that Microsoft knows that we won't stand for this.
We cannot let them set a precedent of companies policing what type of content is made about their game, down to how much merch you can sell.
Down to if you can swear or not.
Down to making sure that you, as a person, player, consumer, are completely and perfectly child-friendly.
This is censorship, clear and simple.
Feel free to add to this post, and correct me if I got anything wrong here.
But most of all,
Feel free to tell Microsoft, Mojang, Minecraft
That We Will Not Be Censored
That
Minecraft Players Will Not Be Censored

I recently watched this video on Minecraft's new Usage Guidelines and
What The Fuck
Please spread the word about it. Server owners, content creators, your friends, random people uploading their builds to Reddit, all at risk. Queer people, Mature servers and communities, also at risk.
This isn't Mojang's fault (entirely) but it is Microsoft's fault. We need to tell them to Fix This and their Vague Exploitable Wording.
I think JoeHills already mentioned it on here, but I figured I'd provide a link to a video that summarizes the biggest issues.

compare this to mojang, who sold out to microsoft and became predatory in its Usage Guidelines that have made making content for the game potentially disasterous for anyone who doesnt fit whatever mojang thinks is adquate behavior. Re-Logic W indeed.

Sound the goat horns and spread the word.
Mojang (owned by Microsoft) has broken the law.
The GoFundMe for the case is here, but I recommend watching the video first so you know what's going on. They need to learn there are consequences for actions such as these.
TLDW: Mojang changed their EULA right under everyone's noses without informing people, to make commerical use guidelines apply to private use servers, and in the past banned guns and gambling without banning them in the actual game (crossbows and gunpowder) or in some presumably partnered servers (such as Hypixel). The Sweedish government is unable and/or unwilling to comply with the European Charter of Fundamental Rights, and several government institutions have made it impossible for Brose (video creator) to obtain remedy the violation of rights as a consumer under European consumer protection laws.

What is F(L)OSS about really? (Preview #1)
youtube
What is licensing, ownership and rights about?
I often describe such throughout the software domain but can easily be applied almost everywhere in society, like in hardware and culture. If I am not mistaken, it pertains to what you actually is your own, either it is home, furniture, computer hardware, software, artistic media, equipment, et cetera. Licensing is similar but has a more autonomous / shared ownership meaning applied.
And the reason why I believe that matters so much is because while the majority (of the human bell curve of demographics*) oftentimes ignore and brush off their personal agency on the wider scale of human planetary affairs, that attitude of distributing their energy & efforts towards current grand managerial bodies like big corporations and big governments is a quite short-sighted perspective and has a quite negative impact in our present day and potential future(s). It is not exclusively negative one-sided story but still, profiteers are not providing enough value for what you invest into their zone of control, monetary or otherwise... and that is very concerning considering the current global society context and the decisions made by such staff of managers & "drones".
The non-profit organization that is Creative Commons as well as my provided hyperlinks across this article should give you a decent insight into matters...
Spectrum of licensing paradigms
Tumblr media
Copyright, the large landlords & proprietary ownership models pertain to the old Liberalism way of thinking (at least if we are to follow it under late-stage capitalism, liberalism and the philosophy of contemporary feudal US law). Not always bad and could really be better implemented as seen in the centuries prior to now.
(I mean, when things were less... structured, competitive, authoritative and rigid in the West and elsewhere, the autonomy and liberties allowed by such a paradigm of a abundance of workforce & income was nice to have and use, but not without some costs even then. Compared to now where things also have costs but as those grew for the low & middle classes and were not compensated by such rigid old models by the aging rich baby-boomers population yet, which is a shame considering all sides really could use a update / upgrade in their to persist in profits and long-term positive legacy.)
But as of today, it is so often misused and taken to extremely abusive extents as shown by the actions of major corporations going all over with massive-scale spying (look at Oracle data tracking record of like 5 billion people and growing), malevolent compliance (look at how both Apple and Microsoft comply heavily with US governmental guidelines for data collection, either by on-chip spyware or otherwise...), critical citizen censorship (like in Continental China, Russia and even the US of A as demonstrated by Edward Snowden's), corporate cooperation & corporative law-craft evils (Valve & Nintendo implicitly agreeing to shutdown Dolphin emulators on Steam, the way Microsoft-Mojang Minecraft falls apart over 1.19 update matters and how major corporations overall back each other up knowing their days are counted), vendor lock-ins, big tech oligopolies and marketshare dominions, expensive prices for very low value provided even for corporate agencies, too much managerial staff oversight control on decisions over workers, failing advertising economy, low-security bottlenecks with malware + botnets (thanks for the "infinite" loop of "security" with leaks, major failures & bulk password breakers trade market against consumers being traded against the will by black hat hackers & operatives that get paid by every irresponsible hidden or not governing bodies autonomously in lawful impunity, that unofficial though-police & cultural choices fails the potential of us all and will accelerate much the descent to further of a societal collapse that is entirely unnecessary if we are to rise to the stars on-time for the dream we were sold to in life), overstaffing & underpay (Amazon & every other mainline corporation abusing his employees for quicker short-term profit, paying very often low-as-in-slavery wages and Amazon taking full control of their employees' communication channels for drone promotion), menial purpose-less tasks and walled garden policies (looking at Apple's overpriced options being less competitive than the value and price paid for such, as well as the hopefully not soon Microsoft going onto such a exclusivity market that they alienate the best in their customer base into migrating away to non-exclusive environments like Linux), along many other situations / issues as revealed by information leaks & literal living in this global culture, both in explicit and implicit forms.
Copyleft, open source, free culture and library economy are the basics of our best bet to solve our current state of affairs, at least compared to what late-stage capitalists offer to us. Not the best thing forever more, but something quite more competitive and more appealing both short-term & long-term to the other corner in the licensing spectrum for the next few centuries, (or until the copyright catches up in given value to the customer and ethics to the lower classes fast but that's very unlikely due to the current rich folks' greed & ideology...) After all, today's enthusiasts, indie artists and modders are tomorrow developers, maintainers and architects.
Permissive licenses, public domain, and third-way alternatives?

Nuances on licensing
~
I have a fairly specific example in mind over one thing we should do better for despite the prejudices ill-fully distributed concerning AIs androids and other smart instruments. You see, as a sapient-kind that most likely desires progress and growth for yourself and potentially other individuals, we have a strong responsibility to cater and take care of both ourselves and every single thing we have agency over (to an agreeable extent ofc, not zealous over it) for both autonomous GAI agents and our current clade / species of humans alike... (there are likely aliens and further future humans species awaiting to be born from our efforts this century, unless the meta history is exclusively a job for some other elder sapient species coming before ourselves, which is extremely unlikely)
Seeing how the current mainstream APIs (even OpenAI and Stable Diffusion's) and datasets available for generative AIs, machine leaning models and other such autonomous agents are quite unethical / illegally acquired and heavily biased against a few core values we share instead of promoting the better parts of our psyche and species, I wanted to point out and encourage the independent & humanist re-developments of such technical promesses before the time when we might lose fully those freedoms / rights to develop the very basics of such future-oriented infrastructure.
After all, if we desire to make sure of both growth, progress, autonomy and abundance for us and our species now and onwards, we need to make sure that we get the rightful tools for stellar expansion on-time. And among those Quality-of-Life things that will help us by far for such a purpose and more will be a benevolent GAI (modular?) system. And that takes initial efforts and gentle caring humane guidance to show and bias such a GAI module into the brighter futures that we aim for really. Also, we should not screw up the future of our species (and other sapients') seeing how grand, and magnificent those futures are really headed towards. (See Stellaris, Isaac Arthur, melodysheep and Kurzgesagt)
That being said, I design my constructed world for multiple purposes including to emulate / simulate history, learn & develop my skills, advocate for my worldview and show to each and everyone why how and what matters for the prosperity of the whole species.

Of course, here is the not-so-surprising cliffhanger twist ending of how all of it relates to (Woodrow) Wilsonism, global politics, socio-economics & the last half-millenium of historical patterns...
But that's for a later article. So take care and farewell!
