I wrote recently about how Monster Reborn is important to Kaiba, but I also wanna talk about how HUGE Monster Reborn is for Yuugi and Atem. The first time the card is used in the show, Yami is symbolically reviving Seto, which is noteworthy for the Blue Eyes Boy, but it also shows Atem's growth. He's famously brutal in Season Zero, culminating in his applying a spiritual lobotomy to Seto in Season One. Using Monster Reborn to revive Seto is a sort of apology, fixing some of his Justice gone overboard. That tempering of wrath is Yuugi's influence, as the necessary opposite to Atem giving Yuugi the confidence to stand up for himself.

But that's not even the coolest thing Yuugi/Atem/Kaiba's does with Monster Reborn!!! I really want to talk about how the spell card is used during the finale, in the Yami/Yuugi final duel. Duelists use the spell often because it's the original recover card, and this show lives on comebacks. It's the card that literally lets friends come back. In the final duel, Yuugi has to let Monster Reborn go.

What happens is this: Atem goes to play Monster Reborn, to revive Slifer the Sky Dragon, the God Card he earned first, to swing for game, and Yuugi negates it. But he doesn't just use something like Magic Jammer or Solemn Judgement. He uses Gold Sarcophagus, a spell based on the very box that used to house the pieces of the Millenium Puzzle, and now the cards most precious to Yami and Yuugi. The spell card works like this: Yuugi places a card in it by banishing it, removing it from this world. And then, if Yami ever plays that same card, his copy is negated. This card only works if Yuugi knows how Atem is going to play, if Yuugi can see his very soul. And of course he can. They're soulmates. And even though the Pharaoh is precious to him, Yuugi has to stop his revival, to remove him from this world. Let him go. Yuugi has become confident and Atem has become merciful.

This is the Yugioh storytelling at it's best, not a vehicle for cardgames, and not ignoring them either. The duels as a look into the duelists, and their actions in game affecting and reflecting the outside world.

I think one of my old comparison layouts that feature different Regional Cover Arts for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game Trap Card, ”The Spellbinding Circle”, will have to do in preventing me from posting something stupid out of my current emotional moments.

In my Stash folders, I reserved an edited version of the Israeli Flag. Where the Star of David should be, I digitally removed it, and placed a Blue colored Pentagram in its place.

I will not post such a troublemaking, controversial point that I’d like to make about the hypocrisy of Human Beings during the current war going on. But it was still fun to make.

She had been mortally wounded. And probably, no one expected the warlock to live for another day. But her patron refused to give up: Her badly injured body could still be saved, they could still fix this up. Hastily and with a lack of understanding on how mortal bodies work, they tried to patch things up, infusing her body with their own essence. Crystal corruption grew rampant and took over parts of the body, even growing a single wing in the process. And she was back. Wrong, deeply wrong, but she was back. Death would have deep consequences for Laestis, but here she was- still on this world. Still her. Mostly.

Hello! Long time no Lae! I wanted to draw her updated look SO bad. She's now got partially fused with her patron/quori (since she's a kalashtar) and is the living embodiment of "came back wrong". It's fine, though, she's got a crystal horn- What's not to love?

Got the MHW:IB artbook and made myself very mad over how good the original Safi'Jiiva concept art was. I genuinely don't know what they were thinking when they made it what it is ingame.

Here is a discussion on the first times Monster Reborn is played, and one on the show's last use of the card. In Dark Side of Dimensions, Yuugi uses the same trick to defeat Kaiba as he used to defeat the Pharaoh. The film follows Seto working desperately to revive his rival and friend. Through ancient magics and future tech, he eventually maneuvers little Yuugi into a position which he believes will force Yuugi to bring back the Pharaoh. And Yuugi refuses.

So Kaiba tries to duel the Pharoah out of him, planning to put the spikey-haired protag in danger, so that the taller protag will come save him. Which I think is silly, because Kaiba can't invoke a shadow game. The climax of this movie, until outside forces intervene, is just a card game. But Kaiba is so sincere about it, it just works!

Nearly the last move of this duel sees Yuugi using a spell to bring out his Dark Magician, and giving Kaiba his copy of Monster Reborn. Yuugi doesn't need it anymore. He's his own duelist, and his own person, too. His deck is reminiscent of the one he shared with Atem, but it is not the same. Of course, Kaiba plays the spell. And of course, Yuugi saw it coming, had a counter ready.

It's the same trick, but it works just a little bit differently. He doesn't stop Kaiba from reviving his dragon, but he makes it powerless. He defangs Kaiba's dragon on his own, definitively showing himself as the stronger duelist. And then Yuugi finishes the puzzle, to show that the power has left it, too. Now that Kaiba's seen the move that let the Pharaoh move on, he's ready to let him go, too.

And it's fitting, right? That the last use of Monster Reborn would be played by the same guy it first brought back? And it's sad, a little bit, that he couldn't revive the duelist who revived him.

I think it's really lame that Atem swings in to steal Yuugi's W against Yami Aigami at the end of the movie.

can you imagine being Essek and watching this tiefling on a total power trip turn into a 10 feet tall--incredibly ripped??--god and kill the boy you're catching feelings for?? And brand you with some kind of evil cursed hivemind magic you're worried might corrupt you forever?? This thing that your friends swear was once family, but all you see is something monstrous and otherworldly and tearing himself apart at the seams, screaming when all their loved ones call out to him??

Just. the way it must have felt to see Lucien go from that to. Just the most sweet and affectionate little tiefling. Gentle and curious and so full of joy and wonder. He's got the brightest smile and warm eyes and this mischievous playfulness. He runs off at first--startled, scared. But then once he's calmed, the first real word he says other than Empty is Love. And right after that he calls out for his Magician, for this man who did everything he could to save him, held him close and kissed him so tenderly on the forehead--

And Caleb throws his arms around Essek and Veth and just watches the Nein all descend on Tealeaf and embrace him amidst laughter and tears and Molly's starting to smile again and Caleb's so so happy just to see him finally alive and.

In that moment, Essek understands why they came all this way--

When he met you, you were the most beautiful woman he's ever seen, and you found him to be adorable, and the secret relationship began with a song🎵

(Netflix Wukong) You approached him first. You glowed and shined above his home. Every night and sang sofly as Wukong would listen to your song, and it wasn't long before you two fell in love. He was an adorable sweetheart and you love him so much and Wukong grew obsessed you and your glowed as he would cuddle and kiss you. In otherwords you guys adored each other.
