Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers: Dale Beside Himself: Dale and Dale Rescue Rangers (Comission For RainbowSixVegasSamurai)

So to start this one.. I messed up. RSVS comissoned THIS episode not Double O Dale. I think I miss remembered the episode as double dale, put it down as double o dale on my schedule and, I made a mistake i'm never making again: asking WHY someone wants to review this. I normally do this as a way of connecting with the client and getting at why. I still do my job fairly regardless, if it's bad even if they like it i'll say as much. But it's nice to know WHY this is beign requested and to avoid people who just want a work to BURN but for the wrong reasons. I'm deeply ashamed of this boneheaded nonsense and thus i'm reviewing the episode they wanted free. They didn't ask for this, didn't demand a refund, were entirely nice. So join me under the cut as I stop beating myself up and get to the good stuff.

So this one's way more my wheelhouse: a weird as shit episode with an intresting high concept premise

In this case in just the show's third episode, technically 8th after the pilot 5 parter since Disney Afternoon Episode numberings are a stygian maze of questionable decisions, in a show that's only diffrence from our world is tha tanimals exist and can make kids next door gadgets.. they bring in ALIENS.

They don't even really ease you into it, the episode opens with three forest animals.. who turn out to be aliens on vacation, Bric.. Brac.. and DTZ

Bric and Brac are preparing to go home, only for DTZ to announce he's not going. The other two forcibly drag him back.... because they don't want to do his share of the work. That's alll the justifaction we get for them not wanting DTZ to stay on earth besides "his faviorite food's not here" which is hastily tacked on to the last LINE of the episode. It's the episodes only real problem: it's hard to want DTZ sent back for more than being a jerk when we can count the reasons he should stay.. but not why he should go. He's fine eating leaves as a squirrel, so a lack of food isn't an issue, he can take up an earth form, and as long as he's careful with their tech he won't really disrupt how earth's progressing. If he was VITAL for going back i'd understand that but later on when Dale, who they think is DTZ, screws up DTZ' job piloting the ship they just.. take it over themselves. They REALLY don't seem to need DTZ to get home and could always come back for him later. They have no trouble contacting him later or actviting his ship remotely. The only reason we WANT him gone later is for doing something terrible.

More on that when we get there. For now we have dale screwing up.. for real this time not just "watching tv and Chip gets mad"... okay watching TV and chip gets mad is part of it but in this case he actually doing something wrong: Dale ate all the walnuts for Montery Jack's Walnut Wallaroos. And all the lingonberries but you REALLY don't need lingonberres for wallaroos it's just an added touch, so Dale goes to get nuts.

While getting nuts Dale encounters DTZ's disguised ship, which he hid as a giant walnut. He decides he wants to bust that nut but can't bust that nut in front of chip so he covertly sneaks his nut in to bust it in private, but before he can bust his nut, his nut busts itself to reveal the ship and DTZ.

DTZ tries to flee in terror, but in a nice turn Dale.. is friendly to the guy. It's partly because he was binging sci fi films earlier, but he offers the guy a spot on the rangers then and there. It shows that while Dale is the village idiot of this team.. he has a heart.

DTZ turns into Dale to avoid deteiction and since Chip dosen't see both dales at the same time tells Dale to go get his nuts. So the two go to get Chips nuts and gather a giant pile of chips nuts with DTZ's telekenisis (Kyle).

Dale naturally decides the best use of this earthshaking power.. is to fuck around a bit, having DTZ use his teleknsis to make chores easier. It's honestly a fun concept: usually when ther'e's a dopppleganger the hero just has them replace him outright and while Dale does have DTZ do most of his work instead of hide off somewhere he's in a hammock watching. Alas the fun ends when Bric and Brac phone DTZ to say their a comin for him, so DTZ tricks Dale into taking his place. And againt his is the only real reason to root against DTZ: ther'es no reason for hi mto you know.. not just stay, take on another earth disguise to hide better and join the rescue rangers properly.

He just goes for the dumbest plan, a plan that only works because Bric and Brac, despite being framed as the smarter ones... are dumb as a post and never bother to make sure they actually GOT DTZ or try and mAKE him shapeshift byf orce, something we saw in the opening they could do. They just assume Dale is him, Dale dosen't bother correcting them because he's got a free trip in a rocket, generally screwing around as usual while on earth the rest of the crew gets annoyed at DTZ!Dale as being too helpful. They also.. TRY to turn this into a be yourself metaphor, as Chip and Monty groused earlier about how much Dale sucks.. but .. it doesn't work for this episode> Dale just goofs off and eats someone else's nuts. Unlike Double O Dale chip has PLENTY of legit reasons to be fed up with Dale's crap this episode.

Meanwhile Dale has to try and return as Bric and Brac think he's gone native, and want to deprogram him... and when just giving him earthburgles, his faviorite food (some one eyed squid things), they decide to go with the resonable, sensible route of conducting some tests to make sure this is actually DTZ because ttheir you know shapeshifters and.. oh nope they just pull out the freeze ray and try to freeze dale till they can get him home. As if becoming another species permantely is a virus and not just.. something that might inevitibly happen to shapeshifters.

Thankfully Dale escapes and confronts his doppleganger, though they can't tell them apart. It's then Bric and Brac arrive and once again decide the best course of action.. is to threaten to blow up all of earth if DTZ dosen't show himself.

I do like this climax, not just the esclation, but the reveal that these aliens LIKE blowing up, so the threat isn't remotely empty. How Dale solves it is also clever: the Earthburgles. They actually set this up well too: we see some escape DTZ" ship when it's revealed to dale, they bring it up to dale later to explain what they are, and dale grabs some to force DTZ to show his hand. The others accept dale and just kinda brush off the first contact, near annhilation of the planet and shapeshifting while DTZ has some earthburgles before his ineveitble execution

Dale Beside Himself is a decent episode. Admitley there's a LOT more they coudl've done by the aliens.. but I understand this is an episodic 80s cartoon. And while it requires bric and brac to share half a braincell between them to work, the plot is fun, the concept is really creative, the idea of having someone work in concert with their doppleganger (Thoguh calvin and hobbes would do this concept way better about 10 months later with the duplicator arc. ), and the hyjinks are fun enough. A bit I didn't mention but loved is DTZ laughing at a knockoff of aliens. IT's not the deepest ep and it's emotoinal arc is messy and makes no sense, but it is a lot of fun to watch. we made it!! us open draw thoughts:

wta:

iga actually has a very manageable looking draw. there’s really no one on her side of the quarter that I could see troubling her. possibly mirra, but iga just beat her in that incredible match in cincy and I don’t think mirra is quite there yet. in the quarterfinal is probably jess (potentially danielle) who is cursed in slam quarterfinals. jess is also completely wiped from all the tennis she’s been playing and I’m not sure if she’ll have enough energy to beat iga. that being said, jess had beaten her before and it’s definitely possible, especially with the home crowd advantage. also, emma raducanu is in this quarter so that’s definitely something to watch out for!

I’d call this elena’s quarter, but I don’t even know if elena is playing. I’m genuinely concerned for her, her health struggles have gotten so much worse since wimbledon and she’s just in really poor form. if she really is down and out, I could see kalinskaya or garcia taking her quarterfinal spot. honestly though, that side of the quarter is nothing compared to the other side. we’ve got: naomi, penko, karo, leylah, yulia, linda, bianca, and jasmine. all in one half of a quarter! the best matches of the tournament are most definitely gonna be produced from here, and I really can’t predict who of this group is gonna make the quarterfinals. this is the quarter to watch out for and depending on who makes it out, they could challenge iga in the semis

coco’s quarter is also pretty stacked, but almost deceptively so. one side has maria and barbora, but both of them are SO inconsistent and could very easily lose early. paula and vika are also on that side and could make good runs, but you never know when paula is gonna have injury concerns. on coco’s side, emma navarro and marta could make things really difficult for her, but navarro is still in monterrey and marta is marta, she could implode at any time. and then there’s coco herself. obviously she’s the defending champion but she’s had some really shaky results coming into this. if she gets back into that determined, winning ugly mentality from last year she can totally make it through this but if the forehand and serve just aren’t working, she’s gonna have a tough time even getting out of the quarter

and finally, who I think is the favorite for the tournament, aryna. this is the best draw she could have asked for. her projected quarterfinalist is qinwen who she had destroyed in every match they played. everyone in her quarter is someone she can handily beat… except madi keys. everyone remembers that insane semifinal from last year when aryna got bageled and still won it. I think if they do play, that will definitely embolden her but madi is not to be messed with, especially at the us open. all that said, I think aryna has a good path to the semis and I would heavily favor her if she plays coco

interesting r1 matches: andreeva/osorio, raducanu/kenin, ostapenko/osaka, muchova/volynets, putintseva/noskova, andreescu/paolini, zheng/anisimova, keys/siniakova, kudermetova/jabeur

so far, jannik’s slam draws as the top seed have been absolutely brutal. tommy paul in the fourth round at the us open is rough, and the other side of the quarter is, well, daniil and stefanos. this should be a difficult draw, but both of them are barely even winning matches right now. daniil did just beat jannik at wimbledon, but he lost in the first round of canada and cincy, and stefanos barely did better. and if they played each other, I have a feeling it would be a very long five setter. honestly, I could see felix making a run here, maybe even to the quarterfinals. jannik is for sure still the favorite to get to the semis, and this quarter could implode on itself to help him. if daniil loses early, his biggest threat is tommy paul

carlos, on the other hand, got not one but two injured top seeds on the opposite side of his quarter (hubi and alex). he’s got jack and korda in his section, but neither of them hold up very well in best of five. the match to decide his r2 opponent is bvdz vs shapo. he really couldn’t have asked for a better draw here, though I’m sure he’ll find a way to fit a few epic five setters in there. hubi is definitely still injured, but I’m honestly not sure about alex’s form. if he’s healthy, he can definitely make the quarterfinals, but if not, that other quarterfinal spot is so open. matteo arnaldi, maybe? whatever it is, I’d be shocked if carlos doesn’t make the semis

this third quarter is going to be insane. the taylor-casper side could have an epic fourth round match between the two of them… or they could both lose in the second round. either way, I wouldn’t be surprised. on the other half, holger has been picking up some great form lately and maybe this time it will be enough to beat zverev. he came so close at rg and I think he definitely does have a chance, but unfortunately zverev is the favorite in that matchup. there’s also just a lot of people in this quarter who could potentially cause upsets and make deep runs: gael, bublik, matteo berrettini, lorenzo musetti, gmp. this quarter feels hardest to predict

and finally. this quarter. the grigor/rublev half seems like it’ll be pretty straightforward with maybe jiri causing an upset. with the projected fourth round, I’d say both have an equal chance. but the other half of this quarter is literally just last year’s us open but condensed. there’s a potential rematch between ben and frances in the third round and yes, the winner of that would play novak. I’m honestly not sure how to predict novak here, he looked to be back in his 2023 form during the olympic final but he’s been playing way below that for the rest of the year and hasn’t played a tournament leading up to this. I’m not saying he’ll get upset, but there’s definitely a chance of it and it’s for sure not gonna be easy for him

Mexican Matt Murdock Headcannons

Yay my meta was well received thank y'all. Here are some hc as a treat :)

Jacobo "Jack" Murdock is from Monterrey 🤠🇲🇽 Super Norteño, he sounds like a cowboy. Has the thickest accent, it embarrass Matt so much

Jack never went to high school and tells Matt to copy how the people on TV talk. They speak "proper" Spanish.

Dad's great great great... granddad was an Irish soldier in the Saint Patrick's Battalion. Hence "Murdock"

He was boxing in Mexico when he met Roscoe Sweeney. Sweeney promised he'd sponsor Jack's work visa and help him immigrate to the US

Sweeney never followed through with the sponsorship. He'll get around to it, don't worry. But as long as Jack's undocumented, he can't box for other promoters/organizers

He would go back to Mexico but he's making more money here than he could back home. Plus he met someone.

Margarita "Maggie" was training to be a nun until she saw him

Baby Mateo Murdock takes after her. He has her eyes, red hair, and pale skin Maggie worries will burn in the sun.

After the accident, Matt even has to translate what the nurse says for his dad. There's an interpreter when the doctors need to talk to his dad. It hurt hearing about his diagnosis and treatment from the doctor. It hurts all over hearing the interpreter repeat it to his dad.

Matt feels so guilty he can't help translate documents for his dad anymore.

His dad's funeral is the first time Matt meets his extended family. One of his Tia offers to take him in but that would mean leaving New York/the USA and going to Mexico.

He says no. New York is his home.

Sister Maggie is one of the few nuns who speak Spanish. And the only one who will read him poetry. She reads him Jose Marti, Juana Inés de la Cruz, Miguel de Cervantes. Matt likes her. Even if she's strict and doesn't tolerate his sass.

casserole recipe:

boiled or rotisserie chicken shredded (however much you want)

frozen corn/pea/carrot/green bean mix 1 bag should be enough but sometimes i like 2 (or whatever your preferred mixed veggie is)

shredded cheese (your favorite) (usually cheddar or mozzarella or i really like monterrey jack)

2 cans of cream of ____ soup (can be chicken, celery, ect)

ritz crackers (optionally butter to mix with it)

mix everything but the ritz into a casserole dish

crush the ritz and if you want mix with some butter i usually don’t.

put the ritz on top of the casserole

because the chicken is fully cooked, bake in the oven at like 350-400°F until the center is hot and the ritz are browned.

sorry this isn’t like a /real/ recipe. it’s just something my dad made growing up and so it’s just something that’s in my brain
