ALPACA-TOBER!
DAY 31!
PASSION! FLAVOR!
FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS!
Thank you all so much for reading!
I apologize for the inconsistencies and delays and I am grateful that you stuck with me to the end. There was also much more that I wanted to show, but the format and my lack of discipline made it difficult to include everything.
I would be lying if I said I was completely satisfied with this project, but I am proud of being able to finish this first attempt at it.
Thank you all again for sticking by and reading!
Please enjoy the story and we will see you next ALPACA-TOBER!

Animal of the Day!
Mountain Tapir (Tapirus pinchaque)
Tumblr media
(Photo from San Diego Zoo)
Conservation Status- Endangered
Habitat- Andes Mountains
Size (Weight/Length)- 250 kg; 1.8 m
Diet- Leaves; Fruits
Cool Facts- Unlike other species of tapir, the mountain tapir has thick, wooly fur. Living in high altitude mountains, this thick fur protects them from temperatures that often fall below freezing. These solitary animals are most active during the day and spend almost all their time feeding. Standing on their hind legs, they grab leaves with their prehensile nose. Despite their poor eyesight, their hearing and sense of smell are spectacular. However, their large size and extreme living conditions make them a last resort for predators in the area outside of humans. Considered the most endangered tapir species, overhunted for their pelts and uses in traditional medicine, programs in zoos and wildlife sanctuaries are working towards increasing wild populations of mountain tapir.
Rating- 13/10 (One of the scariest skulls in the animal kingdom.)

I finished the tapir's family. I had contemplated including the Kabomani Tapir, supposedly a new species discovered a few years ago. However, after conducting extensive research, I found insufficient credible evidence to support its classification as a distinct species. Nevertheless, I did uncover information confirming the existence of four subspecies of Lowland Tapir. Some studies suggest that a black tapir photographed in Malaysia may represent a new species of tapir, yet most scientists contend that it is simply a melanistic variation of the Malayan Tapir. As these examples illustrate, animal classification is not always clear-cut. Therefore, I will continue to study this fascinating animal family and keep abreast of any new developments.
For the time being, this art print provides the most current depiction of the Tapir family, including the four subspecies of Lowland Tapir, the conservation status, and scientific names. You can purchase it by clicking on the link below. Tapir's Art Print Thank you for your support. Please like and share this image if you think it is worth it. See you soon with a new family. A loved one by many.

Mountain tapir (Tapirus pinchaque)
While most tapirs live in tropical rainforests, the mountain tapir lives high in the northern Andes mountains, in Colombia and Ecuador. Their woolly coat protects them from the cold at these altitudes. They live in two main mountain environments: cloud forest, a type of high-altitude tropical forest blanketed in fog and filled with moss, and Páramo, a unique South American type of alpine tundra with plants found nowhere else in the world.

I like the Autumn-like, warm color theme of Pepa’s family. Here’s two little pieces made in 2022.
First one is from September, set 15 years before the movie’s events.
Originally, I wanted to draw little Dolores listening to Pepa and Julieta’s abdomens, and then, looking puzzled, to Bruno’s, because he, being stressed about another simultaneous pregnancy of his sisters (and one of them having third child in short time), has doubled down on comfort food and gained a gut equally voluminous. But I assumed, it would be hard to convey a joke on paper and it will end to look too confusing, or its point of humor gets misinterpreted, so it turned as it is, an image of nostalgic memory.
Pepa’s look based on early concept arts by Meg Park.
Tumblr media
Second one is from May, and shows Antonio 10 years in future with his animal friends.
I was thinking how Antonio personality and partly interests are similar to Bruno’s, to the point some concept arts, also by Meg Park, of him look to me just like Bruno in childhood would look… He may grow to be sort of apprentice of his uncle, generational resemblance only becoming apparent with time.
Tumblr media
Also, I have hunch if Mirabel had never taken the action, it would be up to Antonio to save the family: a trait manifested by his gift is one, lack of which was a source of family’s issues – ability of understanding and communication. And rather sooner than later, the rats would direct him to Bruno anyway:)
His friends here are from all over the continent and only vaguely size-accurate, sorry for that, but I cared to include underappreciated Brazilian arboreal porcupine, who, in my opinion, is even cuter than capybara:)

thinking about "the Great Beast".
thinking about the superlatively unique and loveable creature, the tapir.
thinking about European colonial agents being perplexed and bedazzled upon first encountering the "forest cow" and the "elephant of the New World".
thinking about how an incredible extinct megafauna icon, the giant ground sloth, got its name (and became a central character in popular and professional discussions of paleontology and "extinction").
thinking about bulletproof moose.
thinking about eighteenth-century apothecary remedies.
thinking about how an animal name traveled from the Sahara in North Africa, through Arabic into Spain, to boreal forests of northern Eurasia, across the Caribbean and South America to describe "the beaste in which nature hath endeavoured to shewe her cunnyng".

The Pilgrim, Their God and The King of My Decrepit Mountain, Tapir! (2024)
Tumblr media
The debut of south London six-piece Tapir manages to be both entirely beholden to its influences (Radiohead, Richard Dawson, northwest American indie) and still rather remarkable. Ambitious in its three-act structure, vivid in its naturalistic imagery, reverberant in its declarations and pleas, each of The Pilgrim… repackages the familiar but does so with heart, flair.

We set out to cover the entire tapir family, but there's a debate about including the Kabomani Tapir. This newly discovered species hasn't been validated by all studies yet. Have you heard about the Kabomani Tapir? Do you think it's a distinct species or a subspecies of the Lowland Tapir? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Mountain Tapir
Family: Tapiridae Genus: Tapirus Conservation Status: Endangered Habitat: Mountain Forest Subspecies: 0 The Mountain Tapir, excluding the controversial Kabomani Tapir, is the smallest member of the tapir family. Unlike its tropical relatives, it thrives in chilly high-altitude environments within the Andes mountain range and is known for its thick, woolly coat. Unfortunately, decades of internal conflict in Colombia have both helped and hindered this species. While the instability has prevented hunting and habitat destruction in some regions, it has also made it difficult for researchers to study their habits and breeding patterns.
Despite the advantages and challenges presented by the conflict, the Mountain Tapir remains endangered. The species faces threats from hunting, habitat fragmentation, and the introduction of cattle. The current population of around 2,500 individuals may decline by 20% over the next 20 years, which is concerning given the species' already precarious situation. Protecting this unique species and their mountain habitats is crucial to ensure their survival. ________________________________ Credits: Handbook of the Mammals of the World. Book 2. Lynx Editions.
