Tales of Arcadia fic recs-Rise of the Titans fix it edition

This project's been a long time coming and I'm super happy to finish at last. Here we have a compilation of written responses to the complete dumpster fire that was supposed to be the franchise finale for Tales of Arcadia. Now this is not a comprehensive list by any means, just a collection of my personal favorites and what I consider the best fix-it takes of Rise of the Titans, broken down into several categories.

Bits and Pieces-Not full fix its, but some short little one shots and alternate takes that make the worst parts of of RotT easier to swallow.

Let’s Try That Again-Jim uses the Krohnisfere only to go back to earlier parts of RotT, not the entire franchise.

Instinct of Self-Preservation-Undoes Strickler's pointless death and Jim doesn't go back in time.

Remembering and Honoring a Hero-In a world where the Krohnisfere doesn't exist, the city of Arcadia gathers to remember the fallen hero, Toby Domalski.

Hope Overture-Canon compliant Stricklake, in the new timeline Barbara and Strickler are hit with memories they shouldn't rightly have.

Technically canon compliant-These fics don’t contradict any of the events of RotT, rather pick up where RotT left off with the new timeline of Toby being the Trollhunter. In general I'm not a fan of this particular type of fic. RotT was such a mess all around I don't like the idea of building on it, but the stories below are exceptions for a reason. Not only do these fics work as continuations, each of them is enjoyable on their own merits.

Challenging Destiny @pinkytoothlesso11-Picks up where canon left off, but with the twist of Jim and Toby sharing the amulet as co Trollhunters. From there it grows to include wizards, changelings, and Akiridions working together to bring back magic and create a better future for all. Not only is this story fantastic as it navigates the benefits and pitfalls of knowledge of the future, but the buildup to an eventual post-Masquerade world is set up so well. And this might be a continuation of canon but don't let that fool you, this story never misses an opportunity to throw well deserved shade at the source material.

Trollhunters: Becoming yeeterparker-A fun, fast paced romp that has the characters using their knowledge of the future to speedrun though obstacles while flipping the baddies off on the way. And not only are they able to turn some foes into friends, but troll Jim is back and he's here to stay. All the character interactions are so warm and caring, showing their strong bonds with each other in a way RotT wishes it did.

Atlas through the aftermath @atlasthroughtheaftermath-Jim went back in time, but from the very first morning in the past everything starts going wrong. The amulet was never supposed to choose Toby. Now Jim is forced to walk the line between truth and lies in order to use his knowledge of the future to ensure a better outcome. But as things drift further and further from the timeline he knows he finds himself adrift in uncharted waters. If you like fics that go into all the nitty gritty details with heartbreakingly realistic fight scenes and depictions of armor/sword fighting, this is the fic for you.

RotT fix its-Just like it says on the tin folks, fics that are complete rewrites of Rise of the Titans. But with better characterization, plot points that aren't hamfisted, no time travel retcon; and most importantly, no Steve mpreg.

Rise of the Titans-Secundo Ire @nickelwick-Part two in a series already containing a fabulous Wizards rewrite. Follows the same events of Rise of the Titans, only with the characters actually acting in character. But with the twist of someone else wielding Excalibur, and Jim going through a magical problem of his own. Not only do these changes make for a very interesting read but every character, even the minor ones, is well fleshed out and true to their established characters. All coming together to create an incredible franchise finale.

Fall of the Titans @purplerose244 This one's more a character study than anything else, but holy hell what a character study! This story goes through and analyzes each character's perspective and journey as they struggle against the titans, with plenty of Akiridion worldbuilding and a very interesting twist on the Arcane order's lore, and who gets Excalibur. Salty about how Jim-centric RotT was and the lack of compelling character arcs? Give this a read.

Tales of Arcadia: The Final Becoming @nikibogwater-Rather than focusing on Jim, the main arcs center on Douxie and Nari's relationship, but without sidelining any of the other characters. A rewrite that's short and sweet that never fails to deliver an epic finale with a satisfying conclusion.

The Eternal Day:Tales of Arcadia @rikalovesrice-An epic rewrite that really delivers on the promise to unite the worlds of trolls, aliens, and wizards. Along with some fascinating original lore and some killer redesigns of the Titans themselves (art on author's tumblr). Takes the bare bones of RotT and builds an incredible story on them. Brilliantly weaving the worlds of trolls, Akiridions, and wizards together all leading up to a final battle of epic magical proportions and a brave new world on the other side.

Entire series rewrites-Kind of a cheat category, which is why it's the largest, in that technically none of these fics are RotT rewrites. They're au takes on canon, and many of them were well in progress before RotT was released. Some haven't been updated in a while and some are on full blown hiatus, but they're all worth a read and all have been confirmed by the authors that they will be concluding differently than RotT does.

Becoming the Mask @magic-and-moonlit-wings-Possibly one of the most well known fics in the TOA fandom, and for darn good reason. Starts at the very beginning of Trollhunters with the premise, what if Jim was a changeling all along? Not a half-changeling or a sleeper agent, but a full blown self aware member of the Janus Order. An excellent highly detailed read, juggles a large cast of complex characters, and subtly addresses plot holes as they come along with care and attention.

What the Night Brings @blund3r-bust3r-When Jim has a chance encounter with a creature of the night he barely escapes with his life. Now less than human himself, he's introduced to a vast world below his feet full of danger and wonder, and sets churning gears that have been spinning for centuries. A wonderfully dark, fantastical au that stays true to a lot of existing TOA lore while still being very much its own story.

Sunshine through the Clouds aka shameless self promotion @rockymaidenvixen-Through events neither fated nor accidental, at five years old Jim Lake starts transforming into a troll with each sunset, and back into a human at sunrise. An ability both a gift and a curse that he carries with him through his childhood into adolescence. Changing nothing and everything once he's chosen as the Trollhunter (more about this au under the tag "sunshine au" on my blog).

Tulips of Time @avirxy-Starts with the events of Wizards, but with two major twists. Toby falls through the time rift with the rest of the gang, and Claire's the one with a shard of evil in her heart. Really this story does the trio's characters justice in a way Wizards wishes it did. The trio struggles to make their way in Camelot and find their way back to the future, but medieval Camelot is a harsh time for trolls and humans alike, with the line between good and evil getting blurrier by the day. And their greatest threat may just come from within.

A Brief Reliving of Troll Lore @i-am-gun-robot-This one's just getting started, and hasn't been updated in a long time, but is definitely worth a read. Did you enjoy Wizards but hate what it did for the overall TOA continuity? Then this is the fic for you. A very different take on Camelot of the past, with worldbuilding that can be dark, but is so very rich and nuanced.

Blue Moon Rising @tunafishprincess-On indefinate hiatus, but definitely worth a read. A half changeling Jim au with a dark twist. What if Jim was stolen from Barbara and found by the Janus order, and raised by the top changeling himself under the new name Atlas. Atlas though his fate was certain, but then on his first real mission a certain amulet calls a hauntingly familiar name.

Self Determination @appendingfic-A completed series rewrite that diverges from canon very early on. It starts with the premise, what if the Trollhunter was always human? Spinning out and crossing over with multiple other properties colliding on an epic scale. To say any more would spoil some of the truly earth shattering twists and turns this story has going for it. For those put off by all the crossovers this is a Tales of Arcadia story more than anything else, and you can still follow along and get fully immersed without knowing anything about the other properties tied into it.

👍🏽 A fic you bookmarked recently: I don't use AO3 bookmarks, because I tend to use incognito and not logged in so no one else browsing accidentally hits my last URL and ends up with - well, you know. But I do try to note down some of my fave fics for when I compile my end of year list, and in that vein the last two I added were Winner Takes It All by @skeptiquewrites, which was fabulous as per usual with Tee, twisty and angsty and just perfectly voiced, and along each garden wall by @oflights - I'm not usually especially into mpreg, but read this out of curiosity as a) I have heard SO much good stuff about oflights' fics and b) I have a fic of my own in mpreg fest next month. I'm so so glad I gave it a chance, it was wonderful and uplifting with brilliant worldbuilding and left me so keen to crack on through the rest of her oeuvre❤️

Star Wars planned Fics

Hi everyone!! I know this is late (much later than promised I'm sorry😭) I have finally finished compiling my list of some of the fics that I have parts planned for or am starting to plan. I’ll possibly have a google Docs up later on in the week so people can vote for what they want me to start posting working on more first, but until then post your top two/three preferences below or message me them!

Connection Made - obikin - Rating T - Modern Au, some fantasy elements -                                                                                         Summary: When window shopping in the middle of the backwater town of Tatooine, 13 year old Anakin Skywalker finds an old leather-bound notebook that he takes home with him. Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, in the city of Stewjon, a 14 year old Obi-wan Kenobi, is gifted an old family heirloom, a leather bound journal. Everything seems normal, until their writing on the pages start to disappear, instead replaced by someone else. 

Our found family - no main pairings (Background Obikin in some) - Rating G - Canon divergence, found family, family bonding, post Order 66 Au -                                                                                      Summary: This will be a collection of one shots that link onto my story A Ripple Changes Everything. It will include moments like what happened straight after Anakin left the order, how he met all his children and other important moments that are spoken about/eluded to (or will be spoken about/eluded to) in the main story.

One Nights Mistake makes a Family - main pairing: Obikin (background: one-sided Satine/Obi-wan) - Rating M - Canon Divergence, Set in the Clone Wars, Anakin leaves the order, Mpreg, unplanned pregnancy, One-night stand, slow-burn.                   Summary: One month after a drunken one-night stand with his former master, Anakin Skywalker ends up pregnant with twins. Scared of his fate and believing his former master still loves Dutches Satine, Anakin flees the Order with several of his troops, disappearing without a trace. Six years later, Obi-wan Kenobi still hasn’t given up the search for his missing former Palawan. However, after landing on the Planet Devon with a few of his troops on a recon mission, he runs into a very special set of twins, along with their very familiar mother.

Catch me Before I Fall - no main pair (might become Obikin?) - Rating T (may change depending on how it goes) - Canon Divergence, mentions of slavery/past slavery, mentions/implications of child abuse, PTSD, panic attacks, Anakin gets therapy, Jedi Council bashing (at first, they do get better).                  Summary: Two years have passed since the start of the galactic war against and things weren’t looking good for anyone, but the Jedi were coping, handing their emotions off to the force with ease. All except for one, who keeps it all hidden, dealing with all the criticism and losses by bottling it all up inside. It isn't until Healer Che throws a holo-diary, one of many, in the Councils faces that they see just how close to breaking their Chosen One is, and how ignorant they have been to his suffering. Will they be able to save Anakin from himself? Or will he fall?

Bonded to me (lets make this work) - Main pairing: Obikin (Background pairings: Quinlan/Ventress, other to be determined) - Rating T - Alternate Universe Au, Sith Anakin, Enemies to friends to lovers, Sith and Jedi work together/same order.                        Summary: Being Bonded is a great privilege for a force sensitive, at least in Obi-wan Kenobi’s opinion it is, and he couldn’t wait until the day he met his. That is until he actually meets him. Arrogant, reckless and hot-headed, Anakin Skywalker is the worst person he could be partnered with, and he doesn't think it would work... until certain things come to light to change his mind. Will these two be able to get past their differences to save the galaxy? Or will they bring about its downfall?

Can we come together to make a better life? - Obikin - Rating M - Alternate Universe Au, Sith Anakin, Separatist Anakin, lovers on opposite sides of the war, Shmi lives, secret relationship.                Summary: Two soldier on opposite sides of the war, fighting to keep their love hidden from their own allies and their enemies. Keeping their love hidden while trying to win the war is difficult enough without adding in all the secrecy and betrayal from their own sides while also trying to find a way to end the war. Will they be able to do it, or will they be consumed by the destruction the war brings? (I might create a prequel story for this one about how they met depending on how popular this is.)

Let’s be the best - Obikin - Rating T - Pokemon Au, slow burn, Pokemon Trainer Anakin, Pokemon Trainer Obi-wan, misunderstanding, stranger to friends to lovers, Same age Au, slow burn romance.                                                                                    Summary: 16 year old Anakin Skywalker has finally saved up enough with the help of his mum to start his Pokemon journey with his Charmander Vader to catch as many different types of Pokemon as he can, all to fulfil a life long dream of having a home filled with every Pokemon known. However all of this gets thrown into chaos when he starts running into legendary Pokemon from all over the world, all of which want him to capture them?! Watch as Anakin, along with his trusty partner Vader, make new friends and enemies while trying to make his dream a reality.

Beyond these Castle walls - Obikin - Rating T - Medieval Au, Fantasy Au, Prince Obi-wan, Sorcerer Anakin, Necromancer Anakin, Misunderstandings, Betrayal, War.                                                    Summary: Prince Obi-wan has lived within his castle walls for a long as he could remember despite peace reigning between Stewjon and its neighbouring kingdoms. However, before long a new enemy approaches to shatter this peace. An alliance is called, with the meeting being held in Obi-wan’s palace, allowing him to meet many new people, one being the mysterious Anakin Skywalker, a sorcerer with no land to claim he hails from. As dark times grow closer and misunderstandings come to light, will Obi-wan decide to remain safely hidden away? or go beyond his castle walls.

Familiar Faces - Obikin - Rating T - Canon divergence, Order 66 happened differently, Anakin doesn’t kill younglings, Emperor Anakin Skywalker, Anakin raises Luke and Leia.                            Summary: “The Empire had been in control of the Galaxy for 13 years by the time they were introduced to the public eye, though everybody knew of them. He looked at the Holonet for a moment and froze when he saw them. It was definitely his eyes looking back at him and his features on the girl. But how?” An Au of a different ending to ROTS, where Anakin didn’t really turn to the darkside or storm the temple, had a messy breakup with his secret boyfriend, overthrows Palpatine and now rules an empire while trying to keep his children (twins and adopted children) from blowing stuff up because they are bored. Meanwhile, Obi-wan and the remaining Jedi join the rebellion. Until, of course, Obi-wan sees the royal twins... reunion anyone?

Double Trouble - Obikin - Age swaps, Same age Anakin and Obi-wan, Palawan Qui-gon Jinn, Palawan Yan Dooku, Jedi Knight Obi-wan Kenobi, Jedi King Anakin Skywalker, matchmaking.       Summary: It’s bee three years since Obi-wan Kenobi last saw Anakin Skywalker, three years since they were both knighted and Skywalker decided to become a wandering Jedi, but that never stopped him from invading his every thought. Obi-wan had hoped that during this time, his silly crush on his fellow knight would have disappeared, but it hadn't. Now, Anakin was back by order of the council and had taken not one, but two Palawan's... that both seem to know about his crush. Obi-wan has to face his biggest challenge yet, finding a way to confess his feelings to Anakin without hiss attempts getting ruined by two padawans that seem to think they need to protect their master’s innocence.  

Vader’s Twin - Obikin - Rating T - Canon Divergence, Anakin Skywalker and Vader are twins, Slowburn, Anakin totally kidnaps his niece and nephew when he finds out about them, Vader is obsessed with his twin (to in a bad way though... sort of), order 66 happens differently, no younglings were killed, slow burn.                           Summary: After leaving the twins with their new guardians, Obi-wan Kenobi prepares to live his life in a cave to watch over Luke. But as he does, he sees a familiar face, one that shouldn't be possible. Meeting his former padawan’s twin, someone he never knew about, changes the future of Obi-wan Kenobi, the Skywalker family and the Galaxy in a way that nobody expected.

The More the Merrier - Obikin - Rating M - Anakin doesn't fall to the dark side, Harem of Obi-wan's, female Obi-wan, Knight Obi-wan, Master Obi-wan, Palawan Obi-wan, Sith Obi-Wan, OBK Obi-wan, Anakin gets a lot of love.                                                                      Summary: On what was supposed to be a simple mission, Obi-wan accidentally touches an ancient artefact, knocking both himself and Anakin unconscious. When they wake up, they realise that this artefact summoned five other Obi-wan’s into their galaxy, each who had lost their own Anakin Skywalker and they themselves had died, (So in Anakin’s words “What's the worst that could happen master? it won't mess things up here or there if they had already died where they were from”). None of the Obi-wan’s could get along, but there was one thing they could all agree on: Protect Anakin at all costs. Now Anakin has to deal with a group of over protective Obi-wan’s that keep trying to get into his pants, and emotionally constipated Master Obi-wan who doesn't know how to deal with different versions of himself lusting over his former Padawan, and the fact that Anakin doesn't really want to choose just one and makes himself a harem (Stop laughing Padme, this is serious.)

Trans A03 Data

Hello,

I've started compiling some data about trans-related tags on A03. This sheet is a work in progress. I thought I'd share it in case anyone is interested or has suggestions for areas of research.

Some interesting finds so far:

The majority of fics tagged trans character are in the category M/M (around 60%).

15% of fics tagged author is trans are also tagged gender dysphoria. Whereas only 6.5% of fics tagged trans male character are tagged gender dysphoria and 5.3% of fics tagged trans character.

Fics tagged trans male character are more likely to be tagged mpreg (1.74%) than the overall M/M category (1.42%).

But! Only 0.99% of fics tagged author is trans are also tagged mpreg.

One of the few bright spots of 2020 for me was that it allowed me the chance to read more fanfic than ever before, and I was able to join the Sterek fandom!

I have read literally hundreds of Sterek fics and met many wonderful people! So I figured i should celebrate!

I’ve compiled a list of my favorite Sterek fics that were published in 2020. There were over 5000 sterek fics published on ao3 this year, so obviously there are many great stories not being included, and all of this is based on my own preferences. Still, I think there’s something on here for everyone, so I suggest y’all check some of these out! (I personally recommend all of these, but please heed the tags and warnings as always)
