The "Walk."
Video by Jalynne Dutton
It isn't just that it's "knee" bends as it "steps" forward: It's that you can also see her "hands."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To give you an idea of what I see/sense when I look at this: Here's Gramaw.
Tumblr media
Now. I don't want to stir up anymore "Native American Legend = Dead Man Walking Tornado" misinformation. I will say many native cultures believe that storms are intelligent "Entities" of some sort that can be spoken with and reasoned with. Some don't believe the same. Many believe there are spirits in the sky and that storms are either part of that spirit, a spirit of its own, or are caused by a spirit (such as Red Horse or Thunder Spirits / Frog Medicine.) And some natives even do believe that "If you see a man in a tornado you are about to die" because they were taught as much, but taught so after someone with authority came into contact with that misinformation and co-opted it.
But to believe there are spirits, entities, beings, or even "man" in the clouds/in the sky/inside storms/inside twisters, is not a set of beliefs that are totally outside of the scope of all native belief systems.
I for one think if you *sense* an entity in a storm, you should take cover. If it feels like the storm is watching you, if you get that eerie feeling, just get underground. Even if you don’t believe in spirits or supernatural things, understand that That feeling is produced by neurochemicals, and those neurochemicals had about a billion more years of "experience" with surviving natural selection at any point. So listen to that feeling, because the ancient people that didn't develop that neurochemical reaction to bad storms probably didn't survive and reproduce like your ancestors did. Trust your neurons.

Bestiary Entry: Tornado People, on their way to kill us all!
What are dead man walking tornadoes? :O
it’s a multi-vortex tornado. i dont remember the tribe it originates from (i think it was cherokee), but there’s a native american legend…? saying? that goes “if you see a man in a tornado, you are about to die.”
Tumblr media
the most infamous shot of a dead man walking tornado hit jarrell, texas in 1997
Tumblr media
it did so much damage to the town it caused the scale that tornados are measured by, the fijita scale, undergo revisions, and it made anchoring buildings in the tornado alley region pretty much mandatory. (it took the entire town off the map. only those who had taken shelter outside of the town or in underground bunkers survived.)
two more examples of dead man walking tornadoes looking like a person are a tornado from 2011 that hit cullman, alabama
Tumblr media
and a tornado from 1975 that hit xenia, ohio

Brothership Bros. Attacks - My Thoughts
Tumblr media
It's nice that they made an effort to have these attacks actually play differently.
In previous games, if there was only 1 enemy, the Green Shell acted the same as the Red Shell. And if there were multiple enemies, after taking out the chosen enemy the Red Shell acted the same as the Green Shell.
Red Shell: Out of the two Shells, this is the clear winner. It's Mario's strongest attack until the mid-game, and even after that it still has a niche as a high damage, low BP single target attack. (That said I never had enough BP issues to be forced to resort to this.)
Green Shell: While it has a niche as the first multi-target attack you get, it drops off hard after the early game. Luigi's next Bros. Attack is also multi-target, but deals way more damage at only 2 more BP. Theoretically, it could have had a niche as a cheap way to take out hordes of weak enemies, but after the first strike, Mario's attack, and Battle Plugs it doesn't even have that going for it. At least it looks cool.
Tumblr media
Hatch Me if You Can: While it's cool to see Yoshi helping out the brothers, and it's the first multi-target attack on Mario, it also suffers from the same issues as the Green Shell. Once I got Bomb Derby, I never felt a need to use this ever again.
Tumblr media
Zapperator: And here's the point where you never need to use the Green Shell ever again. Like the Green Shell, it's a multi target attack on Luigi. But unlike the Green Shell and Hatch Me if You Can, it has a unique feature that keeps it relevant until quite late into the game: dealing equal damage to all enemies. You will need this for some of the challenge and even main story battles.
Tumblr media
Bomb Derby: For the third Mario & Luigi game in a row, here's Bomb Derby. Having played both Dream Team and Paper Jam earlier in 2024, I can definitely say they made this Bros. Attack much easier to pull off. The time limit for tossing the bombs is much more lenient, unlike the previous 2 games where you had to start the input as soon as Luigi got hold of the bombs. The newly added finisher is also a nice touch.
Jump Helmet: Considering this is Luigi's only single target Bros. Attack in this game, he definitely got a good pick. What I found really cool was how they changed it from Bowser's Inside Story. Since the Switch doesn't have a dual screen, they just pulled the camera back. Makes me wonder how a Partners in Time remake would handle its Bros. Items.
Tumblr media
Clockout Blow: The most popular Bros. Attack in this game by a long shot. And I can definitely see why. Pulling from all the best parts of anime, this move offers big damage and amazing visual spectacle. And the QTEs become easier once you realize there's set patterns as to how the bros show up.
Yoo Who Cannon: Unlike the Magic Window, which seriously suffered from being given a big finisher, Yoo Who Cannon was greatly enhanced. Not only does it look cool and deal massive damage, but it also gives what was previously a rather meh move a standout feature.
Tumblr media
Max-Mix Vortex: Aka Luiginary Typhoon 2.0, it's cool how they turned one of this game's field abilities into a combat move. My strategy for pulling off an Excellent is to press the A & B buttons 4-5 times at the same time and then fill out the remaining gaps with precision. I also love how the tornado changes its color depending on how many fire and ice balls were used.
Tumblr media
Conductor Connector: Aka: The Zee Egg if it didn't suck. While it has a learning curve with the outer space section, once you get that down you get high damage consistently. I wish you had gotten it a bit sooner though.
Final conclusion: While some Bros. Attacks were much, much better than others, I do have to applaud this game for not having a single Bros. Attack that I actively didn't enjoy using (for example, Paper Jam's Drill Shell). Even the weaker ones like Green Shell I still could whip out and not feel my pleasure suffering.

Wrong modern dragon has 3 separate social media accounts
1. Twitter; Main account, lots of links and fundraisers tons of social and community stuff (a couple bad photos of him looking awkward with people)
2. Instagram: Storm chaser account, lots of photos and videos of lighting or tornados and a couple of his truck
3. Tumblr: a blog dedicated to the questions his sons have asked him in no particular order and with varying degrees of absurdity
There also may be a twitter account dedicated to finding photos of his forearms but no one knows who runs it..
The amount of times he’s been feeling kinda shitty about himself and has read through twitter comments thirsting over him and his rolled up sleeves to cheer himself up is between him and the gods. He definitely rolls up his sleeves more often. Weird form of symbiosis, but it is what it is. He’s pretty sure he knows who runs it. A certain Louisiana man with a toothy sounding name and the attitude to match.
Easily the best photo on the storm chasing account he has is a perfect shot of intra-cloud lightning illuminating a huge nocturnal tornado. It had been a pretty risky chase to begin with, given the late hour and the severity of the storm system, and he’d had to haul ass through a squall line to get out of there, but man… that photo was what it was all about. The windshield replacement from the hail damage was worth it.
He gets a lot of controversy aimed at him for all the main account stuff because god forbid he care about his fellow human beings in the US of A, but he’s never the one who starts it. He finishes it, typically, and usually with generous use of the block button, but he never starts it.
Except for one instance on instagram with the storm chasing account.
So there’s a very famous documentary with horrific footage of a multi-vortex tornado that tore through Jarrell, Texas in May 27, 1997 and killed twenty-seven people. The documentary talks about an “old native american legend” where if you saw the “dead man walking in a storm, you were about to die”.
Now, most often the case in the US, saying something is an “old native american legend” is code for “we’re white and we made it the fuck up for dramatic effect”. This is the case for the infamous Dead Man Walking tornado of Jarrell, Texas. There are plenty of old, old stories from the tribes speaking of the storm systems that ravage the Great Plains, but the Dead Man Walking legend is a fake. And apparently him bringing that to people’s attention was “controversial”.
The Tumblr blog is very light-hearted. Also very, very nice to see such an openly LGBTQA+ space, because dear fucking LORD those spaces don’t exist very easily or openly in Oklahoma. He may or may not have found out he was actually demisexual from his time lurking on there. Until that point he had just chalked himself up as a gay man with an abnormally low sex drive.
He refers to his kids by code names in everything he posts. Ace is Tomcat. Sabo is Coyote. Luffy is Spider Monkey.
His top post is about the time Spider Monkey decided to unintentionally start a war with Miski- a little hen who wakes up and chooses violence every single day of her life- and somehow roped Tomcat and Coyote into it. The saga is still ongoing and doing numbers.

have you heard of "dead man walking" tornadoes? it's a multi-vortex tornado where the vortexes swirling around each other creates the look of a pair of legs walking and also apparently those are especially destructive tornadoes.
also my monster-obsessed mind is now thinking of wind elementals or storm giants based off that exact phenomenon
I have! There was a post *wait for it*... circulating on here recently (sorry) that introduced me to them. Love the idea of some elementals looking like that too!! Great idea, Anon!

About my "2024 is gonna be one of the worst tornado years in history" prediction:
I goofed on some numbers. I've been using the reported sightings in my count instead of the official NOAA counts for confirmed tornados. If the sightings number is accurate then 2024 is the 2nd highest active tornado year in recorded history for the USA.
Below: "Red Horse" winter run, December 29 2024
Tumblr media
If I use current NOAA confirmations this year is still in the top 5, in around 3rd or 4th place, probably 4th. But the sky is still very active.
I would say by late February, NOAA will have finalized its 2024 findings. At that point I can confirm if 2024 was the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th most active tornado year in recorded history.

I like fanfics where Inuyasha and Kagome are caught in inclement weather, seeing them all cozy together. I was wondering if you had a list of fanfics where our favorite couple is caught in bad weather?
Hello Anon -
You have unknowingly asked for a Mod Favorite list because our Fic Finders had so much fun putting this list together for you. This list is a mixed bag for setting and rating, and while predominantly one-shots does include a few multi-chapter stories that feature inclement weather. Happy reading!
Tumblr media
Snow Route by @superpixie42 (M)
Inuyasha thought he had the best idea for a surprise for Kagome. They would spend the longest New Moon night of the year (aka the worst night of the year) together in the market village inn, therefore turning a terrible night into a wonderful night. Except nothing ever goes to plan does it?
--
The Breath of Death by @roseheartwhitefox (E)
He should have seen the warning signs. The sudden chill in the air. The slow but steady increase of the wind as it shook the trees and blew the snow, completely obscuring his vision, burning even his tough hanyou skin with cold. The rapid pacing of the clouds through the sky. The fact that there were no animals out in the forest, despite it being the middle of the day. He had lived through it once before, and should have seen it coming.
A blanket scenario story featuring Inuyasha/Kagome. Takes place during the final act. Rated for explicit content.
--
Summer's Snow by @heynikkiyousofine (T)
A freak snow storm in summer and only one bed? What's Kagome to do.
--
Snow Bound by @petri808 (M)
College roommates Sango and Kagome along with Sango's boyfriend Miroku and his roommate Inuyasha head to a cabin in the mountains for a vacation. Chapter 3-5 contain sexual content.
--
The Last Stop by BanksDelivers (T)
In a world where demons are ostracized by society, Inuyasha has only his pride and the clothes on his back to his name. When Kagome offers him a place to stay during the approaching storm, will he take a helping hand?
Or, that story where Inuyasha is a stubborn idiot and Kagome has to rescue him.
--
The Bus Stops Here by @neutronstarchild, @fawn-eyed-girl (T)
At 6:04pm, while he was waiting to take the bus home, she would appear. He lived for those moments, waiting at the bus stop together, trying to build up the courage to talk to her. When the day finally came, she was late. And it was raining. And it was all he could do to keep her from catching a cold. But finally, they were traveling in the same direction, together.
--
His Hands by @quickening (K)
Thunderstorms are inconvenient most times, but the rare opportunity to closely study a grouchy hanyou is too good to pass up ... especially when said hanyou insists on sleeping on you. Fair's fair, right?
--
Rain by @lavendertwilight89 (E)
Inuyasha and Kagome get caught in the rain after they had taken on root-head. Inuyasha finally wants to talk.
--
Chasing The Vortex by @neutronstarship @ruddcatha @mickisketch @fawn-eyed-girl (E)
Inuyasha knew what happiness was. It was him alone with a tornado, because tornadoes were predictable, and simple. And being alone meant no more getting hurt. Then Inuyasha’s Ph.D. advisor dropped the ultimatum on him: to host a plucky photographer from Chicago to help get their weather institute funded, or else.
Kagome Higurashi, for her part, couldn't wait. She’d always wanted to chase tornadoes, and wanted to see how close she could get to one, to get that perfect shot. And lord knew the chaser needed the help! And for that week stuck together in tornado alley, it’s not just the debris that’s flying.
--
Fortune Favors The Bold by @mamabearcatfanfics (M)
"Dai-kichi! The person you await comes from a distant place. Be bold! It would be good for you to send them a message." Kagome smiled as she traced her fingers over the printed fortune, picturing a dog eared boy with white flowing hair and amber eyes. Inuyasha definitely fit the description of ‘comes from a distant place’ – you couldn’t get more distant than five hundred years into the past. But what sort of message would she want to send him?
--
Shiori no Yoru by ColhanTheDeviant (T)
Kagome falls victim to hypothermia, can Inuyasha save her? My first blanket scenario!
--
When It Rains by @dawnrider (E)
Modern AU: Kagome gets caught in the rain leaving work. Cursing her luck, she tries to wait it out. Her luck takes a strange turn when she runs into her crush from college. None other than Yash Inukai. And he's very pleased to see her...
--
Hold On by @lavendertwilight89 (E)
Inuyasha and Kagome get caught in a storm. Can he help her stay warm?
--
Stranded by @keizfanfiction (E)
Kagome's car dies in an empty parking lot, she's freezing her ass off, and Sango isn't picking up her phone. Help comes from the most unlikely of sources, and after some heated arguing, childish name calling, and some pretty fantastic sex, Kagome is--what--hey waiT JUST A MINUTE NOW--
---
The Blizzard by ananova (M)
Facing a snow youkai, Kagome and Inuyasha are separated from the others. Inuyasha is injured, and they are lost in a snow storm. How will they survive?
--
Mine by jaygirl987 (E)
She was so beautiful and pure. And his.
--
Base Instincts by ImaniJoain (E)
When Inuyasha is lost to his youkai half, Kagome must find a way to convince him to return to himself.
--
Many Glowing Moons by Woodrosia (M)
Oneshot. Kagome is a promising young priestess training to become the Shikon Miko. On the fateful moonless night of her biggest challenge, she comes across a mysterious, handsome stranger in a cave. An incredibly passionate tryst follows.
--
Night Giggles by SamuriFish (K+)
On a summer rainy day Inuyasha and Kagome get stuck in a cave. Somethings bound to happen. inukag oneshot!

Twisters thoughts
Okay first of all loved this more than the original.
I had seen people saying El Reno and figured that they were referring to the first scene in the movie with the rain wrapped tornado and three chasers dying. In fact it was not this and I gasped when the El Reno water tower was shown.
For those of you who are not weather nerds (I will assume most hence this bullet point) In 2013 the largest tornado ever recorded formed and went south of the town of El Reno Oklahoma, this is the only tornado to ever kill storm chasers directly 3 of them were professionals. The town of El Reno was extremely lucky that it didn’t get hit considering mobile radars measured wind speeds of upwards of 301 mph.
I’m torn on the overpass thing because that is in fact the worst place to be in a tornado and while yes three people died trying to hide under it, I still feel like the message conveyed may perpetuate the thought that it’s safe. And I do understand that if it’s the only thing that might save your life you’re going to do it
Found it clever that they named the radar trucks after other wizard of oz characters, I also enjoy that they did bring Dorothy back
The tornado wrangler dude seems very loosely based on Reed Timmer, to me at least
I enjoy the call out about the 10$ radar app, however the comment on that’s why everyone is there is wrong because all you have to do is look at the spc website to see where the potential risk is
They really missed an opportunity in not mentioning Doppler on Wheels especially because that’s where my mind went when they first mentioned the radars
I appreciate the emphasis about safety but man please someone cover your head, getting to a shelter is only going to help you so much and it won’t necessarily protect you from debris
The random mention of the Fujiwhara effect had me cackling
I would’ve rather the twins be a multi vortex rather than twins but I know it was a reference to the og movie so I’ll let it slide
I was very happy with the way they did the ‘tornado ratings’ in this one. Not only that but they explained what the rating means which is fantastic
I would’ve been perfectly happy without the tornado disrupting sub plot mainly because getting radar data as a triangulation is pretty cool an idea
I will say that until we fully understand tornados ‘disrupting’ one will not even be theoretical but I do appreciate how it wasn’t totally made up science, even if we were to do it the trick would be getting there at the right place and time
But hey tornado probes are a thing and have been used in tornados before and they hadn’t had a successful intercept until way after the first movie came out. They’re different in concept and appearance. Dorthy was based on TOTO which was not really successful. The ones today look like big orange cones.
So yeah that’s some coherent thoughts my brain is buzzing because I am a weather nerd and it was throwing big science words lefr and right and kept me engaged

had a dream i was in some kind of place or event with at least two of my old college professors and we were catching up and reminiscing and just as we were sitting down on folding chairs for some kind of outdoor portion of the place or event and one of them was saying "where did you get all of your little glass animals?" (not a thing that i have, largely) we looked up and all of a sudden there was a multi vortex tornado and a booming voice said "RUN"

Random Storm Chaser AU Ramblings
I wanted to ramble about this Au to more people, so yeah.
First off: There's a few tornadoes that the team won't screw with and will keep their distance. One of them is these kinds of tornado:
Tumblr media
The deadman walking tornado; aka, Multi-Vortex Tornado. They heard of the Jarrell, TX, event back in 1997 and had watched the El Reno, OK event live in 2013. They will stay back to wait until it passes through a town or city and help with the search and rescue operation. Though Trip would continue to man the monitors to keep an eye on the storm.
Second: Their favorite place to chase tornadoes is in the states with primarily flatlands with minimal to no trees for miles around. This gives them a clear view of the sky and the tornadoes from miles away.
Third: Their favorite part of chasing has got to be them working with each other and being around one of nature's beautiful yet dangerous marvels. Jen and Wes's particular favorite thing is just going on the adventures that storm chasing brings. They also love to help those who are impacted by the tornadoes.
Eric doesn't have a favorite part of chasing, though he eventually does grow to love chasing with the team and find at least some fun with it.
Fourth: Their favorite group to storm chase with is the Wild Force Team.
Fifth: Trip is the one who was into tornadoes and making things that could collect data from them. He met Katie, Lucas, and Jen, and they became amateur storm chasers. Then, they met Wes, who was quickly onboard and used his money to buy them the vehicles they wanted to storm chase in and the modifications to them.
They met with Levi and brought him into the fold, and he ended up realizing that he liked it and came back for a second season.
Eric... he had a favor he owed to Wes, and, as such, Wes dragged him along.

This is how Twisters (2024) could have been done in a God honouring way:
Jeremy Allen White plays Dr. Reed Harding, the storm chasing son of Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton. His partner in science and navigator is Simone Ashley, a meteorologist studying for her PhD. For the sake of simplicity, her character is also called Kate Cooper, just like in the new film.
Reed is madly in love with Kate, but the mere thought of confessing this to her claws at his fraying sanity, dredging up painful memories of his father's sudden death. Grief grips him, suffocating, almost addicting. He can't bear to suffer the same fate as his mother, left to storm chase without her soulmate. So he keeps his true feelings buried deep within, afraid to expose himself to the pain he would feel if he lost Kate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their ragtag-bunch-of-misfit-scientists is comprised of Anok Yai (in her debut acting role), Abbey Lee Kershaw, Milly Alcock, Manny Jacinto, and the one and only Danai Gurira. Meanwhile, Eric Bogosian plays the leader of another storm chasing team. He is a respected father figure to Reed and the rest, giving them all scientific and safety advice.
Relevant note: see how cool Anok Yai looks in glasses:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I want to see her chase storms so badly.
And now that everything is organized, we can begin.
Our film does not start with Reed; instead, we open on Kate. She is a young girl enduring a sweltering hot day at home with her mother somewhere in the American Midwest. It's the 1990s, and her mum is wearing incredible jeans (which I believe is worth mentioning. Women in the ‘90s wore jeans like nobody else.)
We take our time to build suspense: the wind picks up, wind chimes whirl (in a nod to the original), the tv with news of the oncoming storm flickers, screen doors slam, and curtains snap and billow. Kate's mother rushes outside, frantically securing loose objects in preparation for the impending chaos. She asks Kate to go back inside, but Kate is rooted to the spot, fixated on something in the distance.
Kate: "Mummy ... who is that man?" Kate's mother: "What man, honey?"
Kate's mother follows her daughter's curious eyes to the horizon. There is no man standing there. But there is a tornado--a Dead Man Walking tornado. (Maybe the film is called Twister: Dead Man Walking. Maybe not. We can workshop it. )
Tumblr media
[The phrase "Dead Man Walking" is commonly used to describe the appearance of some multi-vortex tornadoes. The multiple vortices look and move in such a way that the tornado appears as though it is walking. The expression is often associated with the 1997 Jarrell tornado due to a famous documentary, although it has been used to describe other tornadoes as well. The photo above is of the Jarrell tornado "Dead Man Walking." The gif below, I believe, is from the El Reno tornado which killed the TWISTEX team. RIP Tim, Paul, and Carl.]
Tumblr media
Here is when their town's siren starts wailing, and our action sequence begins. Kate's mother is appropriately terrified. Quickly, she gathers Kate and their dog and rushes to the car. She knows they are facing an F5 Tornado and that without getting underground, they will not survive. The problem is the only underground shelter Kate's mother knows is at a neighbour's house. And they need to get there. Fast.
I don't need to break down the action sequence beat by beat. You know the drill. Kate, her mother, and their dog are caught up in the tornado, but they make it to shelter and survive. As they emerge from their hiding spot underground, they discover that the entire town has been destroyed, including their house, wiped off the face of the earth. Begin opening credits and then cut to decades later, when Kate is an adult in love with extreme weather and chasing with Dr. Reed Harding, who she is in love with too.
(I'll have to do a Part Two as this got away from me. But the general idea for the plot is the same as the original. The team encounter tornadoes in order of increasing intensity. The first tornado we encounter (besides the F5 tornado which opens the film) is an EF-1, the next tornado is an EF-2, and so on. The last tornado of the film is another Dead Man Walking Tornado, an EF-5.)
