The "Walk."
Video by Jalynne Dutton
It isn't just that it's "knee" bends as it "steps" forward: It's that you can also see her "hands."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To give you an idea of what I see/sense when I look at this: Here's Gramaw.
Tumblr media
Now. I don't want to stir up anymore "Native American Legend = Dead Man Walking Tornado" misinformation. I will say many native cultures believe that storms are intelligent "Entities" of some sort that can be spoken with and reasoned with. Some don't believe the same. Many believe there are spirits in the sky and that storms are either part of that spirit, a spirit of its own, or are caused by a spirit (such as Red Horse or Thunder Spirits / Frog Medicine.) And some natives even do believe that "If you see a man in a tornado you are about to die" because they were taught as much, but taught so after someone with authority came into contact with that misinformation and co-opted it.
But to believe there are spirits, entities, beings, or even "man" in the clouds/in the sky/inside storms/inside twisters, is not a set of beliefs that are totally outside of the scope of all native belief systems.
I for one think if you *sense* an entity in a storm, you should take cover. If it feels like the storm is watching you, if you get that eerie feeling, just get underground. Even if you don’t believe in spirits or supernatural things, understand that That feeling is produced by neurochemicals, and those neurochemicals had about a billion more years of "experience" with surviving natural selection at any point. So listen to that feeling, because the ancient people that didn't develop that neurochemical reaction to bad storms probably didn't survive and reproduce like your ancestors did. Trust your neurons.
Part of a larger series- Edited Jalynne Dutton video clips also shown at link below.

love watching weather science videos but like. why am i 1000x more interested in tornadoes over hurricanes. they're both spinning air
#we wanted to be a stormchaser when we were younger#nowadays we have to worry about our health too much to have such a risky high-stress high reaction time job#been watching nothing but tornado history videos for days it's one of our intermittent special interests#stemming from the weather science workbook we OBSESSED over as a kid#would read that thing cover to cover multiple times a week. i was the kind of autistic who would read the Encyclopedia for fun#i actually had a fave encyclopedia entry as a kid and now i cannot fucking remember it 😭#i also learned what sex was through the encyclopedia 😭😭😭😭 was legit my first exposure to the concept#but like even though we watch A TON of weather videos including tons of stuff about thunderstorms and blizzards#(thunderstorms my fucking beloved. favourite weather pattern ever. cumulonimbus my bestest friend <3)#most of the videos we watch are mostly tornado videos. and hurricane videos feel boring to us#even though hurricanes are wayyy more powerful#tornadoes are still fucking powerful it's just more. concentrated#tornadoes to me feel Targeted like. that's weather that says Fuck YOU in particular actually#especially multivortex tornadoes where you can literally have two houses both in the middle of the storm at once#and still only one of them gets destroyed#or like pictures you can see of demolished houses with their mailbox in the yard simply untouched#i like to watch tornado videos bc they help me. prepare. just in case#our state gets hit with tornadoes pretty frequently though not as much as tornado alley#and i like to know all the information for sheltering and what to do in the event of a collapsed building and such#i have a little survival kit in the bathroom just in case with like basic first aid and a radio and bottled water#bc thats probably the safest room for me to be in since it's not near any external walls and also hiding in the tub is usually good#also in the event you're caught on the road during a tornado#DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE shelter under a bridge or overpass#those work basically like straws where as the air gets pushed through it goes MUCH faster and gets dangerous way easier#as far as im aware the best place to be is in a ditch or hole if you absolutely cannot find a shelter in time#if you do not have a car with roll protection then being in your car will probably be worse#NOT AN EXPERT THO pls verify this information on your own if you think it is relevant or necessary i have poor memory and can be stupid#i just know that overpasses are dangerous as hell

I remember watching the TLC documentary on this and it gave me nightmares for weeks.
youtube
Of course now I’m a meteorologist so I would describe that documentary as a “traumatizing yet formative experience”
AFAIK this documentary is where the “Native American legend” may have originated. At least when I looked it up later everything just sourced this video except for one redditor who swore his grandad told him about this. Which … is not exactly the most reliable source.
Not saying it’s not a myth/legend that exists - I know this stuff can be poorly documented but interesting how this was the earliest source I could find for that factoid.
Anyway, I do highly recommend this documentary because it captures the utter horror. Though some of the stuff at the end about the meteorology is a little off, the NWS interviews were good but I have some issues with a few clips (specifically they showed reflectivity data instead of velocity data when saying “green next to red = tornado” which is not correct).
What are dead man walking tornadoes? :O
it’s a multi-vortex tornado. i dont remember the tribe it originates from (i think it was cherokee), but there’s a native american legend…? saying? that goes “if you see a man in a tornado, you are about to die.”
Tumblr media
the most infamous shot of a dead man walking tornado hit jarrell, texas in 1997
Tumblr media
it did so much damage to the town it caused the scale that tornados are measured by, the fijita scale, undergo revisions, and it made anchoring buildings in the tornado alley region pretty much mandatory. (it took the entire town off the map. only those who had taken shelter outside of the town or in underground bunkers survived.)
two more examples of dead man walking tornadoes looking like a person are a tornado from 2011 that hit cullman, alabama
Tumblr media
and a tornado from 1975 that hit xenia, ohio

Amendment to previous headcanons
The fruit that “deviled” to become Dragon’s Hebi Hebi no Mi was not a lucuma.
It was a chili.
Specifically an aji amarillo chili with that one “twin” genetic mutation that puts two fruits on one stem. It fell off the plant in Urpi’s garden when it was ripe enough, and whatever causes devil fruits to do their thing did its thing (with the assumption that “natural” devil fruits form in a similar way that the SMILEs do).
The twin bodies of the devil fruit spiral around each other in a double helix pattern like a vibrant yellow-orange multivortex tornado. It- like all devil fruits- tastes foul, but comes with the added bonus of being extremely spicy.
Cue little Dragon- in his single digits and already a tiny, capsaicin-loving fiend- finding it while he helps his mama in the garden. Of course he sees it and thinks that, because it looks kinda weird, it’s gotta be extra spicy. And of course, the Monkey D child does what a Monkey D child does best.
… And promptly discovers he was more correct than he hoped.

What do you think of the "Dead man walking" tornado?
I'm assuming you mean the 1997 Jarrell F5? If so, hauntingly beautiful. The "dead man walking" shape was caused by it being multivortexed. It had obliterated 38 buildings the town of Jarrell, leading to 12 dead and 27 injured. It lead to $40 million in damages
Here is an image of the "dead man walking" for anyone else who doesn't know what i am talking about.
Tumblr media
You can clearly see the multiple vortexes. However, it is to be noted that it was mainly a wedge shape while tracking into Jarrell.

Double Creeks estate
Sadly, in the decades afterwards, the population of Jarrell has not grown all too much after the event. At the time many had moved away due to rebuilding costs.

Y'all wanna hear some even scarier shit?
-Tornadoes emit a specific electromagnetic howl that can be detected from up to ~30 miles away. There are alarm boxes just now entering the market that will EEEEEEEEE when they pick it up.
-There is no law or rule that a tornado has to be visible. Tornadoes form from the ground-upwards. The funnel coming down is just a side effect. Humid soil, no debris to pick up and a high cloud base means that bitch can be invisible even in clear air.
-We still do not know exactly why a tornado successfully forms. There are storms that have all the perfect ingredients and will never show their dangly bits, yet some of the strongest tornadoes can come from a careless whisper of forecasted risk.
-Extremely strong tornadoes can have vortexes that reach out to the side and split vortexes on the ground. These are so indicative of a monster that the Native Americans had a saying (paraphrased) "If you see the dead man walking, you're already a dead man."
Tumblr media
One of the most legendary tornadoes, the Tuscaloosa Multivortex EF-4, sported them in spades.
Tumblr media
-Tornadoes in the Northern Hemisphere rotate counterclockwise 99% of the time. But if a storm's updraft/"horseshoe" is strong enough, a clockwise tornado can form on the other side aswell, and sandwich you.
-Tornadoes can be so unbelievably strong that they scour the dirt three feet deep.
-Tornadoes are not beholden to the motion of their parent storm. There is nothing to stop one thinking "Fuck this town!" and sitting stationary for ten minutes, turning 90 or 180 degrees, or retreading their tracks.
I've been reading facts on Wikipedia again, and i'm overcome with the need to terrify non-Americans with the most underrated Terrifying American Thing: TORNADOES
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Due to a quirk of mountain and ocean placement, the east-central United States has a higher number of tornadoes (particularly exceptionally strong tornadoes) than any other place on Earth.
And they're so fucking scary oh my God

i had another tornado dream last night. i got in a car with a bunch of random people to chase a storm that was morphing between being a stovepipe and multivortex tornado. i tried to take a photo to send my dad so i could be like "a multivortex tornado in pennsylvania in december????" but i was borrowing a phone from someone else and they deleted the camera app somehow and the storm dissipated before i could find a way to take a picture :(

Sky Wielders in Re:Roll V0.2
Please note that the following is playtesting material, and may be changed.
Sky Wielders draw their talents primarily from their Speed, using the element of air and their natural reflexiveness to strike quickly and escape again, rather than focusing too much energy on a single hit. In battle, Sky Wielders are a flurry of movement borne by the wind itself. This battle style is reflected in their personality – Sky Wielders tend to jump quickly to conclusions, and just as quickly to action. Sky Wielders focus on mobility, enhancing their reflexes and speed.
Sky Wielder Keyblades use Quick Attacks for their Weapon Type.
LVL 1: ABILITY POOL*
At first level, you gain access to the following Abilities: Dodge Roll, Block, Reversal
LVL 1: FORMCHANGE
At your first level in Sky Wielding, you have learned to adapt your weapon to the situation.
Choose two Subclasses that belong to a Weapon Class other than Keyblade Wielder. At the beginning of your turn, you can use an action and 2 MP to temporarily change your Keyblade’s shape to one of the two Subclasses. You can spend 2 MP at the beginning of each turn to maintain this form.
While Formchanged, your Keyblade gains the following benefits from its new shape:
You can choose to use the Subclass’s Weapon Type instead of the Sky Wielder’s Quick Attacks.
You can choose to use the Subclass’s Weapon Range rather than your Keychain’s Weapon Range.
You gain access to all the passive benefits of the base Weapon Class.
You gain access to one first-level Ability conferred by the Class or Subclass which you meet any other prerequisites for. You choose the Ability the first time you Formchange, and must use the same Ability when Formchanging the same Subclass later. The Ability must cost 3 AP or lower.
You can choose an additional Subclass to add to your Formchange repertoire each time you gain a level in this Subclass.
You can only Formchange once per battle. If you Formchange outside of combat, you must spend double the MP, and you cannot Formchange again until at least one combat has passed.
LVL 2: REFLEX IMPROVEMENT
At second level, you gain a permanent +1 to your Reflex. This bonus can exceed the usual restrictions on Talent Points.
LVL 3: FEVER PITCH
At level three, you gain access to the Fever Pitch Command Style. While Fever Pitch is active, you roll a d4 each time you use a Combat Ability to attack; if you roll a 4, any being you hit with the attack is Air-Tossed until the start of their next turn.
LVL 4: ABILITY POOL
You gain access to the following Abilities: Aerial Finish, Glide, Reversal Slash
LVL 4: FORMCHANGE IMPROVEMENT
At fourth level, your Formchange improves in the following ways:
You can take two Abilities instead of one from your chosen Subclasses when using Formchange – one from the base class’s first-level Ability Pool, and one from the Subclass’s fourth-level Ability Pool. For existing Formchanges, you can add an Ability from the Subclass’s fourth-level Ability Pool to the Formchange. The new Ability is subject to the same restrictions as the first.
You can trade out any of your Abilities from your existing Formchange Subclasses for another Ability from the Class’ first or fourth-level Ability Pool. When trading out existing Abilities or adding new ones, they now must cost 6 AP or lower instead of 3.
When you meet a character who has levels in a Subclass you’ve chosen for one of your Formchanges, you can spend at least a week of training with that character to gain one additional Ability from either Ability Pools you have access to in that Class/Subclass. You can only do this once per Formchange; if you choose to train in a different Ability for this Formchange, it takes the place of the previous Ability.
LVL 5: CYCLONE
At level five, you gain access to the Cyclone Command Style. While Cyclone is active, Moving does not take any actions, as you rocket across the battlefield like a spinning top.
LVL 6: MULTIVORTEX SHOTLOCK
Tumblr media
LVL 7: ABILITY POOL
At seventh level, you gain access to the following Abilities: Ars Arcanum, Horn Strike, Wind Raid
*Further Abilities are available through the base Keyblade Wielder class at the same levels.
