I want Helldivers but medieval. Endless undead and monstrous forces that the soldiers are fighting against in a large group community effort where all players benefit from the actions of each other.
Using magic to obliterate the forces of "evil" in cool ass ways offers a bit more flexibility than Helldivers stratagems.

let me state clearly here:
baldur's gate 3 is one of very few RPGs I've beaten. it is the first RPG I have ever, ever in my life replayed. it is one of the few games I've replayed.
this game has fucked with my brain chemistry irreparably

The DLC bosses are massive. You need all the strength, speed and skill to take out even ONE of them, let alone all three. However, with just the right skills and with the right weapons? You can take them down in minutes. #codevein #bandai #soulslike #anime

the other thing I didn't realise is that the stuff I was complaining about in my first reblog of that post was stuff that eventually would get much easier once video games became my dominant hobby
I saw a video once a while ago where they hooked up eye trackers to an inexperienced FPS gamer and an experienced FPS gamer and the inexperienced one's eye movements were all over the place trying to figure out where to focus and what is going on while the experienced one's eye movements stayed largely in one or two places, flicking from, say, the HUD to the center of the screen but very efficiently
and I think about that all the time because I think that sums up gaming in general. eventually, with time, that sort of thing just. happens, without you really noticing. eventually, with time, you settle into ease

Now that all that other stuff is out of the way, there is only one more situation to deal with. Putting a new butt in that blood filled throne. But before that, I'll have to remove Silva. And I don't think he's down for that. #codevein #bandai #soulslike #anime

something really interesting is that since I've started learning programming, I've begun to look at video games differently. I still enjoy them, and they're still a huge passion of mine. I still watch other people play games. but now, I find myself analyzing games beyond artistic merit or how fun they are. now I look at a game mechanic and try to figure out how it was made, how I would recreate it or if I *could* recreate it with what I've learned so far/the game engine I've been using. I don't intend to copy these games, it's just a thought exercise that I can't seem to help but engage in. it's like my brain is rewiring slowly and there's nothing I can do to stop it except give up learning. honestly, I love it. I feel like I'm learning a useful skill for the first time since I started composing music (which is, coincidentally, something that will be useful for game development) in 2021. before that, the last time I felt this way was when I was conversational in Japanese in early 2020 (which sadly I did not keep up with studying after lockdown) I'm starting to feel like I could turn this little hobby into a career with a hundred more hours of practice and a little bit of luck. and that's more than I can say for anything else in my life, so really I guess I'm lucky that youtube last month decided to recommend me the video that eventually led me to finally, after years of wishing I could, just sit down and start learning how to make games. anyway this is a long post and I don't think anyone will ever read it. the point is I forgot how incredible it feels to learn, really learn something I *want* to learn without the pressure of a deadline or a grade, to learn for the sake of learning and developing a new skill, and I wonder if this is what people who get phds instead of dropping out of college feel like

I made a timeline summary of this today's article (linked here) about what went wrong in Veilguard and its production (in case you are curious but don't want to read the whole article, which I do recommend)
Pre-2017 Darrah and Mike Laidlaw were already talking about Joblin (DA4) but that was paused to focus on Mass effect: Andromeda in 2017
EA started to eye live service games so in October 2017 they decided that DA4 would become a live service game too (Mike Laidlaw disagreed). Laidlaw steps down from art director and is replaced by Matt Goldman
They start working on DA4 Live service (called in code Morrison) but the team is very small as most people are working on finishing Anthem
Goldman is the one who wanted a more lighthearted entry that would be more suitable for an online game, instead of the dark DA of the past
2019 Anthem flops
In 2020 Hudson (head of studio) and Darrah (head of franchise) resigne. Gary McKay announces that DA4 will be a single story game and not a live service one
This change is done without allowing any reset of the previous work or revision at all, but the team was only given 1 year and a half to transition back to a single player and told to aim for the a big market
The article stresses that many decisions were made with no time, thinking that only a year was left till release, so rushed decisions piled over other rushed decision
End of 2022 testing of DA4 has negative reactions (lack of choices and consequences, caused by the fact that the game was thought of as a multiplayer so no choices can impact the world)
2023 new internal team from Mass Effect was added, which caused conflict as apparently they started to exclude DA leaders from the meetings
It was the Mass Effect team that added the emotional finale but the article stresses that these changes only ended up increasing animosity as the DA team was told before that they had no resources or time for such story additions, but somehow because the Mass Effect team decided it, then it happened
Mass Effect team also remarked that Goldman's snarky tone felt dated and out of style so the dialogue rewrites started (which caused tonal inconsistencies)
Mass layoff at Bioware in Aug 2023 (I think. This date was added by me) demoralized the team even more
The first trailer for Veilguard in 2024 is not well received
The game comes out to mixed reviews, and ends up with half the players EA predicted

a part of your nightly routine before bed is sitting on your living room couch together, doing separate things.
for him, it’ll always be playing some sort of video game. whether it’s on his pc at the coffee table, or playstation, he tends to sit there until the late hours of the night until you’re ready to go to bed.
for you, it’s usually reading, or any kind of arts and crafts. whichever relaxing indoor hobby alludes your interest that day. occasionally you’ll grab a second controller and spend hours together playing multiplayer (he loves this the most) but typically it’s just sitting in each others presence while doing your own thing.
because of this, your boyfriend has grown a bit of a habit.
whenever he dies in the middle of a game, instead of yelling or shouting, punching or kicking—he immediately lets out a huff of frustration and nearly attacks you with his lips.
grabs a dual handfuls of your cheeks, smushing his lips into yours with a sloppy kiss. he does this repeatedly until you’re giggling and he’s practically kissing your teeth, circling your whole face until he’s had a good enough fix to cool himself off and press play.
sometimes he tosses his controller next to him and groans into your lap, silently pleading for your soothing hand to feather his hair and your smiley words of encouragement. it ends with him sitting up and leaning in towards you, wordlessly gesturing to his cheek. for extra luck of course.
and when he’s really frustrated, he just as quickly throws his head into you with a groan, demanding your love in every way he insists.
“tell me you love me. tell me i’m perfect for you. tell me i’m amazing and i can finish this level because you’re my girlfriend and you don’t date losers.”
you have to comply, of course, filling him in word for word what he pleads, and even a few more improvised encouragements all with a giggle. just enough for him to press play with straightened chest and all fired up because you believe in him.
when he finally does beat that level, he only has you to thank. you’re his good luck charm, after all.

I’ve been playing Nightreign solo(because I will be cold and dead in the ground before I give one red cent to Sony, or any other gaming company for that matter, for online play) and it does kind of baffle me that they don’t have NPC party members to help with the single player modes balance. A lot of these bosses are clearly meant for a team of 3.
They went through enough work to implement one for the tutorial area to help show off a few of the multiplayer mechanics, like how to revive a party member, but didn’t set it up as an option for solo play outside of that?
I’ve admittedly always liked summons in Souls games, so I’m biased. But in preparation for the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC last year, I made it my mission to git gud and went through every souls game I had, and all their DLCs, without summons including a new file for Elden Ring, with my mission to kill every boss, no summons, and did it.
This game, meanwhile, is humbling me in ways I never imagined I would be humbled by a soulslike since I accomplished that task.
It may be a low blow, but Code Vein did NPC companions years ago, and they did a good jo- … well, they did a job.
I think I’d enjoy Nightreign a lot more if they at least had the option for those of us too cheap principled to pay for online.
Anyone know how it plays on Steam Deck? Might have to switch to a digital steam copy instead of PS5 so I can party it up.
