I had an idea that won’t go away.

I’d like to co-operate with a queer woman on a fic that takes the set-up of Mary Tyler Moore, moves it to being a queer, multiracial cast living under Reagan, and has the cast of Bleach.

I was thinking things including:

WJM is instead based off the very real KTSF 26, a channel created for underserved minorities in San Francisco–also a large queer centre.

Instead of just being catty and unseen, Rangiku (Phyllis) and Gin (Lars) own the building and the reason Gin is often unseen because they have kids like nobody’s business and they are both trans. In the 80s. Do the math. (Ritual as Bess, but probably Moe and Yukio, too)

Rangiku isn’t catty–she’ll be more her usual self.

Rukia is in Rhoda’s role and befriends new neighbour Orihime (Mary). She and her brother Byakuya were adopted from Vietnam by rich Long Islanders, but when they came out as queer, they were disowned and came to SF to get a new start.

Yumichika owns Mr. Hemple’s. He’s not gonna give it an Asian name because racism would proclude getting customers. He plays straight much like JJ on Good Times, but when Orihime reveals she’s queer herself, he is all too relieved to drop the act.

Orihime came to SF recommended by Rangiku to get a fresh start because women no longer have to put up with the shite treatment like she got from Ulquiorra.

She interviews and gets a job with jerk-softie Grimmjow Jagerjacques (Lou Grant)–producer of KTSF 6 o'Clock News.

Editor Ichigo Kurosaki (Murray) quickly becomes a good friend, and just as quickly, it’s easy to see why sexist and homophobic anchorman Noitora Gilga (Ted) is generally disliked.

Ichigo’s best friend and beard Tatuki Arisawa runs a music video and music news show. She eventually falls for new assistant Chizuru Honsho just as newly divorced Grimmjow and Ichigo fall for each other. Tatuki and Ichigo ask each other for divorce simultaneously.

Grimmjow’s beard Tia (Edie) has him as just as much of a beard–it’s his sister Nel she loves.

Ichigo’s other best friend came with him to the station, and Chad along with Keigo do a children’s programme.

Soi Fon runs a women’s survival programme (in place of Happy Homemaker Sue-Ann Nivens) and dislikes all the news staff save Orihime–if they won’t get rid of Noitora, they’re no friends of hers–and constantly tries to “free” Orihime.

Her partner is station owner Yoruichi Shihouin, reflecting that a woman founded KTSF. Sadly, the board is why everyone has to deal with Noitora.

It’s a pretty easy transition since a lot of characters are similar. Noitora isn’t stupid in the traditional sense like Ted is, but his bigotry itself is set up as stupidity because bigotry is. Violent, harmful stupidity, but it is.

Of course, a big point is living as queer in the time of Reagan, which was a nightmare, and an important one to remember in the face of SCROTUS–making this pretty relevant.

But like the show the setting came from, it’s also comedic. Example scene I wrote:

Noitora takes something about burgeoning global warming info to be ‘gay,’ or says something sexist on air, or something else that would embarrass the station. After the show ends, Orihime pleads “Noitora, why..!?” N: “Why what?” Ichigo stands from his typewriter, “She wants to know why you’re you, Noitora.” Ichigo goes over to the coffee maker. Grimmjow comes out: “And I wanna know why you’re an idiot!” Noitora chuckles “Get hip with the kids, Grimmjow,” Noitora lifts chin up, sneers, “These days, if you’re smart, you’re a neeeerd” Grimmjow leans in"Oh yeah?“ Noitora grins arrogantly, "Yeahhhh.” “WELL, AT LEAST I CAN SPELL 'NERD’!!’” Grimmjow exits scene.

Anyone familiar enough with both source material and wants to help? I don’t want to do this as just a man writing an Mary Tyler Moore Show based work.

EDIT: I should note, I'm cool with NB, too (as long as you're not another guy) and mostly specifically noting /queer/ woman because this has m/m pairings as well, and "omg lol yaoi fanz uwu" are fucking nasty people who think queer PEOPLE are their personal playtoys via fetishising queer men through fictional men.

A trope that-Well i'm not sure i'd call it my favorite but it's definitely WAYYY up there and it's 'troubled but good kid'.I'm not talking about pick me girls or generic nerdy white boys,i mean kid characters who're genuinely weird and outcasts-Kids of color and baby autistics and eggs who get adultified,who get mocked and humiliated,who get fitted into boxes they don't want to and they act like real ones do instead of sanitization but that also includes the extreme unjustified punishments and loneliness that comes with.Most of the adults in their lives don't do anything to stop the abuse they're going through or if they're really unlucky,there's straight up no positive older figures to guide them so they're lost and there's no Neverland to fly away to.They gotta become strong,they gotta stay kind for their own sake,they gotta keep their shit bottled up because they feel enough of a burden already and don't want it to get worse,to not be even worse thought of.They didn't do anything wrong,they just tried to be good,they tried their best,but it was never enough for people's expectations

But it pays off.Their strength gave them the ability to be heroes as they slowly got older,their kindness inspired and healed others and they got it returned like they deserved,they were allowed to be a person and not a problem for once and now everyone thinks they're the coolest person ever because they ARE,they WERE,they ALWAYS WILL BE.Was i troubled kid?Yeah,you could say that.Was i ever really Robin?I'm not a role model.All i ever wanted was the normal life i couldn't have.I know-I wanted to show that i'm not so motherly,that i can have fun too.Because us weirdos have to stick together and nobody should be punished for who they are!
