Just found there’s little to no written content for Suzume here, so I started another wip on a whim. This’ll probably be a mix of romance and angst.

Eyes open, the air around you still feels ethereal.

It's gotten worse, your ability to tell the difference between your dreams and the waking world. The worst part of it is your keystone; the one thing keeping you tethered and grounded is missing.

Staring at the familiar ceiling not a couple feet above you, you reach out and touch it. The coolness of the surface tingles through your fingers. It sure feels real.

The sheets and blankets that cover you keep you wrapped in warmth as they do most mornings.

You release a sigh. Time to bite the bullet.

Reluctance and anticipation overwhelm your heart, but you bring yourself to turn your head to look past the edge of the elevated bed and over the rest of the rented flat.

There's no one.

“(Name)...”

There's no one... 

“(Name)...”

He left...? 

“(Name).”

Your eyes open, a sharp intake of air expanding your lungs. Blue eyes and a tousle of dark hair immediately greet you. His face is worried.

A pad from his finger swipes gently at your cheek, taking a tear you hadn't noticed away with it.

“Hey...” his voice is soft but laced with concern. You realize most of his body is on top of yours, providing a comforting weight. "Happy sunrise. You were in a deep sleep again. You okay..?"

“Souta?”

He smiles at that. “I'm here.”

It's been some time since Monaca started living with them and Nagito revealing his... new hand. A couple of weeks ago, Makoto and Kyoko had visited them to inform them about the Neo World Program being under testing. Apparently, the Neo World Program is supposed to undo Junko's brainwashing and completely rehabilitate the Remnants of Despair.

Chiaki is a bit wary, simulations like that tend to have something go wrong with them, but despite that, she is excited. If there's a chance to save her old classmates and friends, she will take it, no matter the risk.

Right now, though, she has a more pressing matter.

Getting Nagito's chain collar off. She noticed he's been trying to scratch his neck a lot lately, but couldn't because of the collar. Unfortunately, Monaca lost the key during Bing Bang Monokuma's attack and picking it proved difficult, even for Izuru.

Didn't help that Nagito resisted their attempts at getting it off. Guess that's Ultimate Despair for you... They take pleasure in things they hate. It must be so uncomfortable. He'll probably get markings on his neck from all that chafing...

Everyone's sitting on the couch playing together. Today, Chiaki had set up her Gamecube and had started up Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures. A fun 4-player game they can all enjoy. Nagito was having a bit of trouble, on account of only having one functioning hand, but was doing well enough. His Ultimate Luck may be to thank for that, or maybe he's just that good.

Unfortunately, their play session was interrupted by a notification coming from Chiaki's phone. "...Oh, it's work. I need to send in some reports, so we'll need to pause the game for a bit." In reply, Monaca started whining, "But we just got to the booooooss! Monaca doesn't want to stop playing. Big sis should ignore any Future Foundation work and continue playing with Monaca and Big Bro! ...Oh, and Mr. Stalker, I guess."

"Sorry, but I can't do that. I've been putting these reports off for a while already, so I really need to deliver them. Munakata-kun's gonna be mad if I put it off anymore." Chiaki put her controller on the table and stood up. As Monaca tried to grab at her skirt, Nagito gently laid his hand on the little girl's shoulder. "Now, now Monaca-san, don't be so impatient. Let's play another game for a little bit while Nanami-san does her work, alright? She unfortunately can't abandon her duty forever."

"Hmmm... Okay! But Mr. Stalker isn't allowed to play with us." Monaca brightened up instantly and made to swap over to the Switch. Chiaki didn't get to hear what they ended up deciding on, but could tell Monaca was happy with whatever she started playing.

She walked into the isolated corner she's fashioned into a make-shift office, and sat down at her desk to get started on those reports. After a few minutes had passed, she heard a knock on the door and steady, even steps heading to check who it was. Faintly hearing the door opening, she deciding to let Izuru handle it and focused back on the reports in front of her.

At least she planned to. "Hey! Nanami-san, Nanami-san! I've got great news! ...Ah, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to interrupt you while working! I'll just, uh, get back to you later...?" Makoto shouted as he burst into her office, almost completely covering up the sound of Kyoko dicussing something with Izuru and Nagito. ...With the occasional snide comment from Monaca. "No, it's alright. What did you come here for? Did something happen?"

"Yes! Or, um, kinda...? Nothing really 'happened' per say but... Anyway, it's good! Really good!"

"...Well, what is it then?" Chiaki was honestly getting a bit impatient, eager to get back to writing the reports so she can finally be done with them. "Um, I told you we were working on a way to undo Enoshima-san's brainwashing, right?"

"Yeah, the Neo World Program, right?"

"Yeah! It's finally operational! We can get started on rehabilitation now! Kirigiri-san and I have already made plans with Togami-kun to have the islands and the pods readied for the 15 of them! We've got boats and everything ready to sail them all over too! I don't know how no one has caught wind of it yet if I'm being honest, but everything's going super well!" His excited rambling almost managed to lose her with everything he was saying, but she somehow managed to keep up. Somehow, I doubt it's just that they haven't been caught. Someone must have noticed it by now, it's far too big an operation for no one to notice. Which means someone is trying to help cover it up. ...Could it be...?

"...Hey hey, slow down a bit. Islands? boats? Where exactly are you taking them, Naegi-kun?" Chiaki had a few questions regarding the plan, but decided to point out what she deemed most pressing. "Oh, sorry! I totally forgot to mention that! The server for the Neo World Program is located in a small archipelago in the Pacific Ocean consisting of six islands called 'Jabberwock Island'. Apparently, the Future Foundation reconstructed an old administration building on the central island into a base so they could rebuild the island." Why do you say that like you're reading it off a tourist guide? "...I'm not sure why they didn't go throught with that plan, but now we can use it to help the Remnants recover!"

"I see. And I guess you're planning on the Remnants continuing to live on the island after rehabilitation too?"

"Um, well, that's the plan, yeah! They... can't exactly just wander around freely, even after being freed of the brainwashing. The Future Foundation -no, not just the Future Foundation, the whole world wouldn't like it if we just... let them go. As much as I hate it, they did kill a lot of people. Rehabilitation can't undo all their crimes."

"...Yeah, I get that. They'll serve their time living on the island. ...Much preferable to prison, I'd say. Maybe... after enough time, they can get the opportunity to visit the rest of the world. Maybe they can help restore the world in exchange for getting to leave the island occasionally."

"...I hope we can get to that point. I'm just worried about if the Future Foundation will ever come to accept that they're rehabilitated, even long after the fact. These guys are a real stubborn sort, you know?" Makoto let out a sheepish laugh, trying to cheer himself up. "...Hey hey, are you going to stay on the island too?"

"Huh?"

"I mean, you'd need someone to watch over their recovery after the program... probably. Some of the Remnants don't seem to be doing so well, physically speaking. I ran into Owari-san during patrol some time ago and she... looked like she hadn't eaten a thing in weeks. And everyone has heard about the ones who traded their body parts for Enoshima-san's." Nagito's hand was a prime example of one such instance, but even that was far from the most disturbing one. ...Tsumiki-san will need to be kept a close eye on. Out of everyyone, her health will probably be the worst...

"Oh, yeah, you've got a point... I was considering it, but there's no way we'd get away with being gone so long. Of course, we'll take some time to watch over them after they first wake up from the program! But..."

Chiaki understood what he meant. As the leader of the 14th division, and the fact the Future Foundation already knows he has plans of some sort regarding the Remnants of Despair, there is no way he could just up an disappear. That said...

"Then, I'll do it."

To Mod: So far what character do you think definitely gets mentally better as part of their character arc?

//Well there's a couple, so I'll make a small list.

Toko is the big one. I did a full analysis of how much she's improved mentally since the events of Danganronpa 1 and Ultra Despair Girls.

Makoto's arc for these last few arcs of the story are a key one.

Mukuro is another big one. Her entire role in the story is the big bad's sidekick turned over a new leaf and trying to cope with the horrible shit she spent like, 20 years doing.

Mikan, although her's is a bit wishy washy because she tends to regress back into her Despair self every now and then, but she sees it mostly as a way of confronting and accepting that side of her that's a little bit mental.

Nagito is another big one. Though not initially, he's definitely on that path now. He's kind of coming around to accepting that his mindset was warped and that he really only convinced himself that Hope and Luck were what they were because his talent did so much to ruin his life, so he kind of had to find the positives somewhere, but now that he's sort of facing that part of himself instead of running from it, he's starting to become less of a twat.

I'm gonna put Izuru on this list to, but his is a little looser. He's not getting "mentally" better so to speak, but he's becoming more of a person and less of a template the more he interacts with the others.

Another big one is Munakata. His is also about trying to overcome his past and being less of a dick than he was in DR3.

Angie's character arc is this too, even though I don't touch on it very often, but with everything she's been through she's not all smiles all the time anymore, because she's done putting on a front and trying to let God solve all her problems.

Tenko's character arc from this point on falls under this umbrella.

Miu's character arc has been this since the end of Phase 1 all the way up to this point, and even though I really didn't like The Tower arc back when I made it, with what Miu was able to do in this chapter, it was so worth writing it in the end because it's a great way to show how far she's come as a person.

I want to say Kokichi is this as well, but he hasn't really changed that much, he's just learning how to drop the front and show a little bit of sympathy and weakness when it matters.

Sora had some trauma that she needed to overcome, and that's shown best in Rise and Shine with the situation where she was afraid to take off her restraints, fearing what she might do, but bit the bullet to save Kaede and Monodam.

Iroha went through quite a lot of development in Survivor compared to her last canon appearance in the Omake thanks to Kokichi's influence and the fact that she's lived a life away from all the Despair and dread, and that's done a lot for her mentality and personality. She's not half as selfish as she was during the Killing Game.

Akane Taira's like this too, but more on that to come.

And lastly, this is sort of what's going to happen with Uchui from this point forward. He's managed to overcome the ghosts, beat Zetsubou, stop his father's project for good, and now he just needs to mentally heal the cracks. And after a long time of being alone and suicidal, he's finally willing to accept help for his problems.

the apothecary diaries kinda au with reisaru. Minakata is a future heir to imperial throne but for now pretends to be a mere high ranked official. Saru was literally high key brought into palace to work as a low staff. saru is extremely annoyed by it and wants to return back to brothel (where he was left as a child and raised by high ranked prostitutes who were better parents than his actual ones could ever be). and apparently during his own investigation of unexplainable deaths muna sees saru coming to same conclusion and becomes progressively interested in him. also saru is angry so he throws hands with people even if it’s consort’s dumbass maids.

and then one of grateful consorts takes him under her wing and then munakata sees saru at one of celebrations dressed all rich and without his usual hairstyle and with different glasses that make him look softer and oh yes munakata is in love. also saru’s explanation to looking and behaving like that is that being soft and gentle in brothel, as well as being a young pretty boy, isn’t a good thing.

Imagine everyone is so smitten with Munakata too because of his good looks, he’s just smiling and sparkling at everyone while Fushimi glares in disgust (and that only makes Munakata more intrigued). Fushimi’s mom was a high-ranking courtesan who got tricked by her lover into getting pregnant and dumped the baby at the brothel before going off to become a high powered merchant instead. Fushimi was raised with a bunch of loving big sisters who always told him how pretty he looked even though he’s crabby all the time. He teaches himself useful things like medicine because he didn’t want to be worthless like his father, he’s returning from the market with a bunch of herbs one day when he gets grabbed by some random dudes and sold to the palace as a servant. 

Fushimi figures if he keeps his head down maybe he can get out of this without having to do any more work than necessary, in this AU say there are both male and female concubines so it’s okay for male servants to work in the inner palace without being eunuchs. Fushimi is befriended by boisterous servant Yata, who shows him all the ropes and tells him about the ‘frilly pretty guy with glasses’ who’s in charge of the inner palace operations. The first time Fushimi sees Munakata he doesn’t get what the fuss is about, that guy is definitely weird and creepy (also while servants in the inner palace can be male the one in charge is assumed to be a eunuch, so you have Fushimi thinking Munakata’s like that the whole time). What Fushimi doesn’t know is that Munakata is basically in disguise, he’s actually the future heir to the throne and is basically showing his competency and abilities by pretending to be a mere official even as he directs everything in the inner palace to his liking.

At some point there’s a scandal due to the unexplained death of an infant in the inner palace and Munakata naturally takes charge in finding out what the issue is. As he’s doing his investigation he gets an anonymous tip about the face powder the concubines are using, though Fushimi did his best to be sure he wouldn’t be caught Munakata still finds out that Fushimi was the one who solved the case. This makes him very intrigued, there appears to be a particularly skilled servant in the palace. He maneuvers things so that grateful concubine Awashima (who is one of the highest ranked concubines but also semi-working for Munakata behind the scenes) takes Fushimi on as one of her personal servants. Munakata of course uses this as pretext to visit Fushimi constantly and put new unexplained cases in front of him, Fushimi is annoyed by having to do all this work but somehow it isn’t so bad either, having someone who believes in Fushimi’s abilities to this extent. 

Of course eventually there’s a big garden party and as one of Awashima’s attendants Fushimi has to attend, which is when they all find out how pretty he is. Normally Fushimi keeps his hair all messy and has big thick glasses and maybe he even seems slightly tanned normally or wears color contacts that make his striking blue eyes brown, but that’s all an act — he learned quickly living in the brothel that being a slim pale pretty boy would make him a target. When he arrives at the garden party he’s got all that makeup and disguise removed though, he’s given a more stylish pair of glasses and his hair is more combed and of course he’s so pale and gorgeous looking. Munakata has been looking for Fushimi specifically to give him a hair pin and almost overlooks him, for once struck speechless by the sight of this ‘real’ Fushimi. He recovers quickly of course, noting that Fushimi is indeed even more skilled than Munakata ever would have thought. He puts the hairpin in Fushimi’s hair and Fushimi assumes this is just a weird court thing, having no idea why everyone else keeps looking at him and whispering.

Saya: Whoa, another lovely pattern.

Munakata: Yeah, I bought it at first sight. …By the way, if you don't get back on track soon, it will be dark soon.

Saya: Oh, you're right!

I think it's pretty clear from this chapter that Nisio had a lot of other storylines planned, though I'm not sure how much attention each one would have gotten

Toshusai's mission to round up the Gun Eyes, Yosaimura's mission to dredge up the Unsinkable Aircraft Carrier, and of course Iroha's mission to save the Battlefield Dancer, all could well have been their own story arcs, but it's also possible that all but the latter would have been background events. Regardless, Nisio is telegraphing that there was more story to tell, and that we'll need to fill in the blanks on our own at this point

In a certain sense, I appreciate that Nisio is showing me what could have been. Being given breadcrumbs even after the story's conclusion allows me to continue creating the story in my heart, even if the canon is beyond my reach now. To borrow Nisio's wording, it feels less like the story has ended and more like it's stopped

Endings usually come in one of two flavors - wrap-ups or "our journey continues," but this one kind of feels like both in a way. It's demonstrating how the previous storylines wrapped up, but while also showing what new journeys started since then and which were never completed. It's a bit more realistic in that way, as people's lives aren't stories that can be bound neatly in the narrative of a book

That said, this is still a story, and some elements do need to be presented neatly. With the story concluding with every class working as a unit, I think it's fair to say that my take that this was, at its core, a Friendship story was correct. I wonder if perhaps every first-year class was made to treat the other classes as enemies or rivals specifically to build up to the point where they would be allies later? It would make sense for a military academy to lean into basic team-building structure like that, as the stages go as follows: Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing. Every class is built from strangers, they're put at odds with each other to become acquainted, their dynamics normalize, and then they can operate efficiently with that familiarity. It makes sense for this to be repeated at every level, from intra- to inter-class relationships, and possibly even inter-school relations. In the end, I do wish that we could have spent more time exploring those relationships, as they were easily the most engaging part of this narrative

Oddly, the most reassuring thing about this ending was that it kind of gave me closure to a question I've had for over a decade now: was Medaka Box canceled? Based on this ending, I'm inclined to say no. There are so many parallels between these two endings - the timeskip, the where-are-they-now, the final shot of a group photo, the literal credits sequence. It was all so familiar that I recognized it pretty much immediately, but there was one key difference: while Medaka Box took us through the goings-on of the entire casts' lives, very little of it felt like story that could have drawn out the series' lifespan. I mean, sure, it could have, but none of it felt like it was meant to be story that we would have seen directly. It was everyone catching up and talking about what they've heard their friends have been up to, but with the exception of Munakata becoming an exorcist when ghosts or demons haven't been an established concept up to this point, all of it was just "oh, she's a baker now, he's a cop now, he's a politician now, she's a calligrapher now," etc. None of it was of any real consequence to the lives of the cast, it was just flavor text to reminisce on the events of the story and how far everyone has come

Here, I feel like we could have seen all of it and it would have been engaging. We're not just touching base with old friends here, we're waking up from a coma and learning that we missed all of the fun. It's such a vastly different feeling that I can't help but feel like this is how it would have felt if Medaka Box were canceled, therefore it most likely wasn't

I'm sure I could come up with more to wax poetic on with this series, but to be honest, I'm getting exhausted here. It's heartbreaking seeing one of my favorites get cut down like this, and as some of you may have heard, Martial Master Asumi has been canceled as well. I don't want to harp on this for much longer and make myself sadder, so I'll conclude on as positive a note as I can

I had a great time writing about this series. Being able to explore shonen tropes through Nisio's lens is always a delight and a bit of a trip, and getting the chance to share that experience with others was great fun. Iwasaki's art was fantastic, as evidenced by how many of these girls I absolutely fell in love with, and I'm glad I got to see so many parallels to Akira Akatsuki's style. I actually have to wonder if the styles of both series were directed by Nisio's vision or if perhaps Iwasaki is a fan of Akatsuki. Either way, this last year has given me the opportunity to relive my time with Medaka Box while also giving me something completely new at the same time. I'm so grateful that Nisio and Iwasaki at least got to make it this far, and I hope that we'll get to see both of them again in the near future

This is the only key piece drawn in promotion for Soulless Army and predates the game’s 2006 release. It was prominently used for the game's cover, the official guidebook cover and a pre-release poster. I couldn't find any commentary for this piece, but it seems to be drawn in the style of an action movie poster. In the bottom half of the artwork can be seen Tae, Narumi, Raidou and Kaya. Notice Raidou's confident pose and smirk in comparison to the others characters. Surrounding them are the demons Tsuchigumo, Azumi, Ippondatara, Hitokotonushi, Nagasunehiko and Mishaguji, who have seemingly been summoned by Raidou. Gouto is also hanging out at the bottom. Looming in the top half of the artwork is General Munakata with his army of Yomikugutsu and Rasputin holding a Nesting Doll. Even further above them is the Soulless God Oumagatsu and a group of floating Hiruko.

The title of the piece itself is still unknown, but following previous Kaneko PS2 cover naming precedents, it’s likely something simple like ‘Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army’ or just ‘Soulless Army’.

Funny thing about Munakata being against the Kamakura project is that he basically becomes his own Izuru Kamakura.

I do like that he still sounds like Hajime.

The thing is Junko and Izuru are intellectual equals.

But Junko has the upper hand.

Izuru doesn't see Junko as a threat, she's able to fool him and implant the seeds of wanting despair in him.

She knows his situation better than anyone, because he knows all the outcomes and so does she.

She's bored and knows he is too.

And uses that in her favour.

Which is sweet.

And Junko in the infirmary.

Makes sense that Mukuro doesn't like Izuru, especially cos he injured Junko and Junko's fangirling over him.

I say seeds like it was done all sneaky and cryptic but girl just despair speeched him.

I'd say Junko has issues but we all knew that.

Wasn't who I expected her to grab first... Especially because Ryota didn't become a despair.

But that doesn't mean he escaped her grasp.

general rant: i don't like the anime adaptation. (surprise!)

ah yes, danganronpa 3. love it or hate it, the anime adaptation was extremely impactful to the series in terms of the information we learnt about the characters and certain events. (on a tangent, i personally loved human chiaki, even if it doesn't make thematic sense for her character... i hate to love her i do...) but when it comes to the adaptation's characterisation of junko... i think that it leaves much to be desired. not even listening to jamie marchi's top tier voice work for her was enough to save her, and i genuinely believe jamie marchi's voice is a perfect westernised interpretation of junko's character.

there are two main points of contention when it comes to junko that stops me from truly enjoying the installment- firstly, her characterisation. secondly, her impact.

first of all, junko's characterisation did a complete 180 when you compare her in the anime to the games. in the anime, she has a blatant disregard for people around her. in the games/light novels, junko held a lot more restraint. i can't get over how many of the key events in the tragedy were experiments done by junko in preparation for the events of trigger happy havoc, which, to her, was the climax of the tragedy. but, not only that, a lot of what junko did during her school life was done inconspicuously. in danganronpa zero, the e-mail sent to the reserve course students was sent by a redacted sender that only the combined efforts of a software engineer and a spy could uncover. junko spread awareness of the tragedy of hope's peak through word of mouth before leaking the video- and not many people knew that she was the one who spread it, much less the person who "discovered" the event. she also erased her memory with yasuke's help in order to evade suspicion from both the school and the student body (specifically, survivors of the killing game), and, not to mention, she got interrogated by the school- and this wasn't a simple interrogation, either- yuto claims that they analysed her brainwaves and did a non-verbal communication (kinesic) analysis on her! and they let her go free and closed the investigation into her!

when making junko, kodaka said that he wanted to create a cute, visually appealing character who was just irredeemably evil. i believe the dichotomy he wanted to establish in her character influenced junko's in-universe reception: her ability to evade suspicion was a result of her nonthreatening appearance. because of her innocent, cute look, virtually no one but her victims suspected her.

so, with that in mind... her literally blowing up a car with mukuro in her first appearance? getting juzo to write her off on paper by threatening him with his secret crush on munakata? mocking ryota in front of a crowd? i just don't think these would be things she would do, unless she was intentionally trying to provoke them. and who knows, maybe she was- but, like she said in danganronpa zero, all of this was just to set up for the events of trigger happy havoc.

when junko says that things were "moving along exactly according to her scenario", the implication i got was that no one noticed what she was doing. most of her outrageous behaviour would take place behind closed doors.

speaking of which, a particular pet peeve i had about the despair arc was junko making mukuro sing during the killing game they forced the student council into. personally, i think that just made the scene more comedic than anything. i feel that from trigger happy havoc, junko and mukuro were not perceived as this slapstick comedy duo- they always gave me the feeling that they were intimidating in public and worked exceedingly well. yes, junko is abusive towards mukuro- she berates her, humiliates her, and tries to kill her- but she wouldn't do that when they're in front of strangers that have not yet embraced despair.

i also am just not a fan of how they simplified junko's relationship with despair. yes, i know, "but kodaka said she was supposed to be fully unsympathetic!" i think... she was already pretty unsympathetic to begin with? when you think about her ultimate analyst abilities and how everything she has done has been calculated, not to mention the antisocial behaviour she acts out... i feel that's infinitely more terrifying than the "randumz teehee XD i think despair is funsies!! random people suffering is comedy gold!!" junko that was shown in the anime. "junko's a character whose entire motivation is despair!" her motivation is still despair in the games! just because it's a bit more nuanced doesn't mean it isn't!

i have a lot of gripes about the tragedy of hope's peak academy, now that i've read danganronpa zero. i feel these are all common gripes, though- like how the anime tried to shift the blame of the tragedy off of izuru by making him only kill one person (in self-defense!), as if junko's attempt to win izuru over with her ideology meant nothing- isn't izuru supposed to be slightly more interested in her ideology than everything else? the lack of scale of izuru's involvement in the tragedy of hope's peak academy made the reserve course's reaction very disproportionate.

in general, i was just very underwhelmed by the lack of focus on the reserve course and how we didn't get to see their bubbling resentment- despite them adapting the twilight syndrome murder case as well, which, you know, was a case that involved the deaths of two reserve course students and the involvement of one main course student. i'd imagine that was the first shockwave that rippled across the reserve course student body. like, they'd lose their trust in the main course as being "pinnacles of hope". maybe even scared for their lives?

i also, surprise surprise, have a problem with how they interpreted brainwashing in the anime adaptation! as a result, i do not like ryota mitarai, as the unfortunate face of this interpretation. i don't mind writing with ryotas, of course- but i think their relationship and what they do will need to be completely replotted.

(on a tangent, i... really don't know how ryota's talent would be of help when it comes to enhancing junko's videos at all. they're "live action". if anything, an ultimate filmmaker/visual effects artist/editor would make more sense than a 2d animator. hell, a 3d animator would make more sense than a 2d animator.)

so, let's talk brainwashing. i will say that brainwashing as a concept existed in the series before dr3, but i will also say that how brainwashing's portrayed in those installments is completely different from how it's portrayed in the anime.

in danganronpa zero, yasuke said that junko brainwashed the students by taking advantage of her victims' (in this case, the reserve course students) already existing emotions of her victims and manipulating them with information. this information, as we know already, can be in the form of a video, written word, or spoken word. this is also supported by monokuma in sdr2:

not only that, brainwashing in danganronpa zero is associated with repetition. a reserve course student in the monokuma cult watched it around 5,818 times.

now, moving onto the despair video in particular- from how i interpreted the description of the video, i believe that the video was meant to look amateurish. ryoko talks about how the video looked like "obscure video art" or "avant-garde dance"- her narration emphasises it feeling like a (fictional) movie done by the reserve students:

words that take up the entire screen, colours that real broadcasts would never utilize:

obscured, low quality video footage and audio:

the despair video junko sent to the reserve course was not meant to be appealing. if anything, the video should look more like a snuff film. it should look shocking- whether it's because the quality is bad or the contents are too explicit: ultimately, the video something that you can't believe is real at a glance- that you have to watch again just to make sure you saw it.

brainwashing, as described in the novel, is a psychological phenomenon rather than an actual physical event.

now that we've tackled the novels, let's move onto the games. the games don't quite expand on how brainwashing works as much as danganronpa zero does, but we know that it's mentioned in both sdr2 and udg.

in udg, there are the monokuma kids, who wear monokuma helmets that are similar to the helmets the reserve course student cult wore:

furthermore, in sdr2, there's a manga in the bio lab that talks about how the tragedy became so big. it mentions the importance of repetition (via media saturation) and inciting pre-existing emotion in danganronpa's brainwashing.

it also uses the term itself, referring to what members of ultimate despair did to spread the ideology:

sdr2 doesn't give us much insight on how junko utilised it for class 77-b, but it does give us insight on how ultimate despair utilised brainwashing for the world: by using their influence and talents. using software. coming up with new laws and policies. so on and so forth. to me, it doesn't seem like they used the despair video that junko used on the reserve course students- which implies that brainwashing is not necessarily done through the despair video. it can be done with anything- so who's to say that junko needed to use the despair video on class 77-b?

not only that, the neo world program truth bullet also mentions the term in its description, especially in relation to rehabilitating the remnants of despair. the neo world program, which was created by a therapist, neurologist and programmer- which means this is a virtual therapeutic simulation meant to assist with deprogramming victims of brainwashing- especially victims who were in a cult. and junko's ultimate despair group is essentially a cult.

now that i've laid out how brainwashing works, we can see how the anime utterly simplifies this phenomenon, turning this intensive, multi-pronged process into one magical anime video (with magical ~subliminal messaging~) that conditions you to "desire despair". it's, for all intents and purposes (and pardon mois francois), fucking bullshit. if you ask me, if you replaced that despair video with the lobotomy mukuro did to chisa, i don't think it would've made a difference at all! and i hated the lobotomy more than the brainwashing!

i know, i'm supposed to brainrot about how badly they ruined my girl- but honestly, the way they did junko dirty wasn't through characterisation- it was how they butchered her actions. the lack of attention given to both the reserve course students and class 77-b is frankly insulting to her, seeing as these two groups were key characters in the worldwide tragedy. i've done my fair share of complaining about the reserve course students, so let me end this rant on class 77-b.

i wish we got to see why junko was so interested in class 77-b. once again, nagito pulling a gun on junko was funny, but him breaking into her secret lair because he was lucky- not even in an accurate way to his luck cycle, mind you- was just unsatisfying at a second watch. i know this is probably because both future and despair arcs were being developed and aired simultaneously (if i remember correctly), but i still think that there were ways to make the despair arc satisfying, especially since there were so many existing characters in that arc.

if you ask me why junko was so interested in them in the first place: from what i can infer from the games and novels, i think that junko took advantage of class 77-b because they perfectly embodied the arrogance and contempt of the main course students. because of this, i don't really mind that junko didn't take advantage of them in a more personalised manner, although i still prefer it and want to write plots in that vein! but i think that class 77-b was used because of what they represent- the ultimate flaw in hope's peak ideology- rather than who they are as people.

...also, where the hell is my boy yasuke in all this???

Reisi Munakata

At a first glance Munakata is the poster boy for Scepter 4 in terms of his look, proper uniform and all but a further glance into his design reveals key aspects of his character. Let’s start with just his Scepter 4 outfit in general. Despite being one of three most important characters in the organization that the series focuses on he doesn’t have much deviation in his outfit the way Awashima and Fushimi do. I like to think this is intentional. He is supposed to represent Scepter 4 as its leader and king of the blue clan. The role this puts him in gives him comfort and purpose. But look at his neck. Unlike other characters he wears a cravat, possibly as a nod to the styles of aristocracy or royalty. But also think about how a cravat fits. It’s right around one’s neck, possibly symbolizing that while Munakata takes comfort in his role, it also serves as a detriment to him and his growth as a person.

Well..I want to tell you about my character and my part-time mascot. His name is Roman Vikulin, he is an Ultimate Military Policeman

His appearance has changed many times. This is appearance of 2020-summer 2022

He has been in Danganronpa fandom since November 2020. It's a long story to tell about this character, but..I'll tell you part. 2017-Terrorist attack in the St. Petersburg metro, he was injured and was in shock, later knocked out the suspect with a folding baton, joined army in 2018, and later joined police. In 2020,he was involved in an accident where his parents died, and later joined Task Force 141. His career ladder was going up. In December 2020, he fell in love with the girl of his dreams-Aoi Asahina, he lost her repeatedly for various reasons. He was diagnosed with PTSD (due to his service in army, police and in Task Force 141).

Ship Naehina gave success and key to creating 1st successful ship with my character. Other name of ship was "Wave of Justice". He had enemies..It was Sakakura and Munakata from Future Foundation,mostly. And you know perfectly well that they overstepped his bounds. So it would be better for these two not to anger him, otherwise they will get a hail of bullets from him.
