Paula Abdul - Straight Up 1988
Forever Your Girl is the debut studio album by American singer Paula Abdul. The 1988 album was Abdul's breakthrough into the music industry after being a choreographer for high-profile clients including Kate Bush, The California Raisins, George Michael, ZZ Top, Duran Duran and most notably Janet Jackson. At the time of the album's release it was the most successful debut album of all time and was the first time an artist scored four US Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles from a debut album.
"Straight Up" was written and produced entirely by Elliot Wolff, and was released as the album's third single. It became Abdul's first top-40 hit in the US, eventually topping the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1989. The single brought Abdul widespread public attention and remains her biggest international hit to date, reaching the top 10 in at least 16 countries.
It also earned Abdul several award nominations in the US, most notably including her first Grammy nomination in the category of Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1990.
The song became so popular that it ascended up the charts before a music video had even been shot for the song. The black and white video, directed by David Fincher and choreographed by Abdul herself in mid-January 1989, won four 1989 MTV Video Music Awards for Best Female Video, Best Editing, Best Choreography, and the first Best Dance Video. The video features an appearance by her friend, comedian Arsenio Hall, whose popular talk show had premiered a few weeks prior to the video shoot. Djimon Hounsou also appears.
"Straight Up" received a total of 73,6% yes votes!

Year-End Poll #40: 1989
Tumblr media
[Image description: a collage of photos of the 10 musicians and musical groups featured in this poll. In order from left to right, top to bottom: Chicago, Bobby Brown, Poison, Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul, Bette Midler, Milli Vanilli, Will to Power, Anita Baker. End description]

NINETEEN EIGHTY NINE the number another summer!
Okay Public Enemy didn't crack the top 10 so I'll stop.
But yes, we've reached the end of the 1980's. Soft rock and ballads are still a surefire way to perform well on the charts regardless of the changing trends. But one of those changing trends I'd like to shine the spotlight on is the rise of new jack swing, with the chart presence of Bobby Brown (formerly of New Edition), Paula Abdul, and Janet Jackson. The genre, with its fusion of r&b, funk, hip-hop, and dance will largely be associated with the 1990's, but these artists and tracks helped to set the foundation before we move into the next decade.
Another artist on here I want to talk about is Milli Vanilli. Not because of the song itself, but because it's a weird moment of music history and I want to talk about it. Girl You Know It's True was the duo's most popular single, but it was also the song that led to their downfall. For those who don't know, Milli Vanilli was one of the first major instances of an act being caught lip syncing during a performance after the backing track kept skipping. This wasn't a case of an artist lip syncing to their own tracks either, but rather it was revealed they were lip syncing to someone else's voice. The story goes to some rather sad places and it's questionable how much control Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan (the two men making up Milli Vanilli) had over their careers. According to the producer, Frank Farian, the session singers were brought in because he didn't believe the two men to be capable of singing themselves. Their request to sing on the album following the controversy were turned down and the group was fired. To this day, Milli Vanilli remains the only musical act to have a Grammy Award revoked by the Academy (seriously if you look up the 1990 award for Best New Artist, it still says "none"). While we won't get a major lip syncing scandal like this until Ashlee Simpson's 2004 SNL incident, the debate over lip syncing will continue in the coming decades. Especially with the rise of dance music, and artists like Martha Wash demanding credit for the use of their voices.

80s music tournament part five!
So far the winners heading to the final round are almost all men with only Bonnie Tyler’s “Holindg Out for a Hero” winning a round. Well, time to get some women to represent! All of these songs were each of this artist’s longest number 1 single of the decade.
Please choose one and reblog for a wider sample size! Fell free to tell me if you have another ‘80s favorite in the tags!
I have tagged the past polls as “80s music tournament”

Music History Today: June 19, 2023
June 19, 1963: Paula Abdul was born in San Fernando, California. The former L.A. Lakers cheerleader and choreographer scored her first hit in 1989, when "Straight Up" shot to Billboard's number one spot, becoming the first of four U.S. chart-toppers from her 1988 debut, Forever Your Girl; the others were "Forever Your Girl," "Cold Hearted," and "Opposites Attract," each earning a gold certification from the RIAA. This success laid the groundwork for her second act as a judge on American Idol. This televised singing competition began in 2002 and kept Abdul in the spotlight throughout the decade.

I got to episodes 6 and 7 last night but had no time to write my thoughts on them, so here they are now!
Episode 6 Dr. Teeth hugging Zoot so tightly is going to be the only Smooth Jazz content I get in this series, isn’t it?
Always good to see Baby Animal, especially seeing him develop his interest in music.
The band’s origin story was interesting, but I kind of wished they addressed the fact that Lips was a late addition to the band, cause the flashback with them painting the bus made it seem like he’d always been there.
Also, interesting origin for how they got the Mayhem bus! Never put much thought into that before!
Also, is Teeth’s backstory that is revealed in this series going to affect “Everyone Matters”? No, cause I’m too fond of the fanon I developed or am borrowing for that story, but I do like the backstory they gave him in the show.
Episode 7: Again, how vast are Lips’ music connections?! He knows one of the Bangles (his “Walk like an Egyptian” dance was cute), he knows Paula Abdul (was he responsible for her being on Muppets Tonight?), and he knows Paul McCartney, and straight-up ignores his call when Nora decides they don’t need an actual Beatle for their documentary (which killed me XD).
Zoot being unaware that certain celebrities are dead is pretty accurate, and I loved Morgan Freeman’s cameo.
Ugh, please assure me Nora/JJ doesn’t happen! I’m on Team Moog!
Really, Peter Jackson? You do TRILOGIES? Where are Meet the Feebles 2 and 3 then???
Also, on the note of the Feebles, I’m surprised they were even referenced in this show, since their movie was beyond R-rated, and I’ve heard from somewhere that one of Henson’s kids (I think it was Cheryl) was disgusted by that movie and considered it an insult to her father’s legacy.
Honestly, I’d like to know more of what happened when the Muppets met the Feebles. Why are two in witness protection and the rest in jail???
Gonna watch episodes 8 and 9 tonight!!!
