If Luhrmann’s direction is one wheel of this glorious Rolls Royce of a movie, then Austin Butler’s performance as Presley, and Tom Hanks as his manager, Col. Tom Parker, are two others
Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis delivers a deliriously smashing ride. The story of Elvis Presley, the pop culture phenomenon, who married country music with Rhythm & Blues, is told in Luhrmann’s trademark eyeball-searing…
It’s no secret that the Hollywood Comet loves musicals.
In 2010, I revealed I had seen 400 movie musicals over the course of eight years. Now that number is over 600. To celebrate and share this musical love, here is my weekly feature about musicals.
This week’s musical:
Song of Norway (1970) – Musical #764

Produced by ABC Pictures Corp., distributed by Cinerama Releasing…
Guys… he finally did it! He gave us the jungle room scene! Respectfully thank you Baz! Finally giving us what we need! And the way Austin is looking is… I-I’m speechless!

(Not to be dramatic, but this GIF has me weak.)
I met 21 year old Elvis just about a year ago when I began dating Red West. Elvis had always been so gracious, allowing me to stay at his house when things got bad at home and inviting me to things that only the Memphis Mafia were invited to.
Things had gotten bad at home, I called Red and he came to pick me up to stay at Graceland. I met Red at school, he was something….Special, but he always took care of me. The feeling of relief that came over me when we walked into Graceland, the smell of Gladys’s home cooking, the sound of the Memphis Mafia laughing and Elvis’s laugh overpowering them all.
“EP, I’ve got, Y/n.” Red yelled. “Oh, bring her in man!” Elvis yelled. We both walked into the living room and got comfortable on the couches. “How you doing?” Elvis asked, looking at me. “Oh, good. Do you mind if I stay the night tonight?” I asked. He nodded, understanding. “Of course, stay as long as you need.” He said. “Thank you, Elvis. I promise I’ll be out of your hair tomorrow.” I said. “Boys, dinner is ready!” Gladys’s yelled from the kitchen. The boys got up and ran to the kitchen, except for Elvis, he walked slowly next to me. “I’m sorry it’s not good at home. You’re welcome here anytime for as long as you need.” Elvis said with a smile. “I really appreciate that, EP.” I said. We walked into the dining room and I sat next to Red.
Dinner wasn’t too eventful, we all just enjoyed some delicious food and caught up. I always enjoyed this simple dinners though. “I’m going to head to bed, thank you Mrs. Presley.” Jerry said as he got up from the table and carried his plate to the kitchen. “We should probably do the same.” Red said as he stood up. “Thank you, Mr and Mrs Presley.” I said as I grabbed our plates. “Don’t worry about it, dear. We’ll clean everything up.” She said with a smile. “Are you sure?” I asked. “Of course, get some rest.” She said. I nodded with a smile and followed Red to his room. His room was small, but nice. I always left a small bag of “Necessities” in the room. I went into the bathroom and changed into my pajamas, brushed my teeth and crawled into bed.
Red laid down next to me and immediately pulled me into a kiss and climbed on top of me, which led to his hands on my breasts and sliding down between my legs. I choked on the kiss and pulled away. “No, not yet.” I said, pushing his hand away. “But, baby I want you.” He said. “I’m not ready, Red. We talked about this.” I said. “Come on, you’re just nervous.” He said as he pulled my shirt over my head. “Red, stop. I don’t want this.” I said, tears forming in my eyes. “Oh don’t flatter yourself, you know you want me.” He said, pulling my pajama shorts off of my hips. My hands fought to stop him from undressing me but I lost. He had won.
Elvis’s POV
I sat in the TV room with my peanut butter banana sandwich on a plate in front of me. I was about to head to bed when Red walked into the room. “Damn.” He said smiling as he walked over to the bar. “You seem happy.” I said, nodding to him. “I sure am, Y/n is damn good.” He said as he poured himself a drink. “One drink, Red. Are you saying what I think you mean?” I asked. “Her pussy is damn tight.” Red said, shaking his head. “Watch it. We don’t kiss and tell in this house.” I snapped, pointing my finger at him. “Oh come on, EP. You know you want to fuck her.” He said. “You better watch what you say next.” I spat as I stood up, walking over to him. “She’s my girl, I can say whatever I want about her.” He said. “Get out of my Goddamn house.” I said, grabbing him by the neck of his shirt. “Fuck you.” Red said. “Get the hell out.” I said, storming out of the room and walking up to my bedroom. As I passed Red’s room, I heard small whimpers and cries.
Y/n’s POV
After Red left, I tried to wrap my exposed body in the blanket, as I was in too much pain to grab my clothes off the floor. I pulled my pillow into my chest, buried my face into it and cried. The memories from the past half hour flooded my mind, the pain making me shake. I heard the door squeak and I buried my head deeper into the pillow. “No, more. Please!” I sobbed. “It’s just me. Its just Elvis.” His soft voice said, coming closer to me. I lifted my head and looked at him as he squatted down next to the bed. “What happened?” He asked softly. “He-um-he.” I said before breaking down again. “You weren’t ready.” He said, it wasn’t a question. “I wasn’t. He promised he’d wait.” I cried. “Come ‘ere. Let’s get you out of here.” He said. I nodded and he started slowly lifting me, making sure the blanket had me covered. I whimpered as he lifted me. “What’s going on?” He asked, searching my face. “Hurts.” I cried. “Where? Where are you hurting?” I pointed between my legs. “Down there.” I whispered. “Take a deep breath for me, I’m going to get my mama.” Elvis said, slowly laying me back down. “No! I don’t want anyone knowing.” I said.
“Y/n, you’re in pain and I don’t know what to do. I’m getting mama or I’m calling the doctor.” He said. “No, you can help me. You can help me.” I said. He looked at his arm that was placed under my legs, noticing blood. He looked at the white sheet wrapped around me to notice more blood. “You’re bleeding.” He said. He stood up and left the room. “No! Don’t leave me!” I cried.
I laid there, trying to catch my breath and failing miserably until I saw Elvis coming back into the room, his mom behind him. “Oh, Y/n sweetie.” She said, covering her mouth. She kneeled down next to the bed and stroked my cheek. I looked up to see Elvis had left the room, I felt vulnerable. “I’m going to look, we need to see if you need a doctor. Is that ok?” She asked. I nervously nodded and she barely lifted up the blanket. “I’ll be right back, sweetie.” She said and stood up, walking back in the hall where Elvis was standing.
After a few moments Elvis came back into the room and walked over to me. I felt safe with him in here. “We have to call the doctor. I’m going to get you to my room since it’s easier to get to.” He said. I nodded and he lifted me up. I cried as he carried me to his room, finally feeling a little relief once he laid me down. “Good girl.” He said as he laid me down. “Mama called the doctor. I’m going to grab you a shirt.” He said as he stood up. He came back with a black long sleeve shirt of his. “Do you need help?” He asked. “I don’t know if I can move.” I said. He helped me by putting the shirt over my head and arms, moving the blanket further down on my waist so I could lay back comfortably. “Thank you.” I said. “Of course.” He said. He stroked my hand as we sat in a comfortable silence until the doctor arrived. Elvis walked out and Gladys took his place next to me.
The doctor examined me and told me I tore, I had multiple 2nd and 3rd degree tears and if the doctor wasn’t called when he was and I continued losing blood things could have gone bad. He got the things out of his bag to stitch the tears and got started.
Elvis POV
I stood outside of the door, my heart hurting as I heard her gut wrenching screams and cries. I walked down the stairs still hearing her cries faintly, needing to breath when I saw Jerry on the couch. Obviously awoken by the commotion. “Jerry, is Red still here?” I asked. “Yeah, he’s playing pool.” Jerry said. “Take care of him. He did that to her.” I said. “Is she doing ok?” Jerry asked. “I’m not sure, the doctor is working on her now.” Jerry nodded and started towards the pool room. I walked up the stairs again to my room, the door was now cracked open and the room quiet. I pushed the door open to see the bloody blanket laying over her, her chest heaving and silent tears coming down her cheeks. Mom was holding her hand and trying to calm her down with kind words.
She looked up to see me standing there, she nodded and got up, I took her place next to Y/n. The doctor and mama left the room.
Y/n’s POV
“Lay with me please.” I said, with a sniffle. I felt the bed sink down next to me. “Did the doctor find anything wrong?” He asked. “Uhm, I had multiple tears. He said if he wasn’t called when he was it could have gotten bad. Thank you, Elvis.” I said, looking at him. He was laying on his side, one arm propping him up as he intently watched me. “I’m so sorry, Y/n.” He said. “Hold me please.” I said as I moved to face him. I whined as I got settled. “Do you have another blanket? This one is a little…bloody.” I said. “Here.” He tossed the old one off of the bed and pulled the comforter over me. The shirt he gave me went almost to my mid thighs so I wasn’t completely exposed. He pulled me into his chest and stroked my back. “Get some rest.” He whispered, kissing my forehead. I sighed into his chest and slowly dozed off to the sound of his heartbeat.

Hi, thank you so much for asking! I'll always jump at the chance to share my opinions on musical theatre so thank you for the excuse!!
Hadestown
I don't say it lightly when I say that this show is a masterpiece. I was lucky enough to see it on Broadway with Eva and Reeve and also once on tour. It's spectacular.
2. Six
It's not a perfect musical in my opinion but I think it's just so clever and for some reason the title song always makes me cry. "Heart of Stone" is damn near always playing in my car.
3. Come From Away
(technically came out 6 years ago but close enough)- I don't find myself listening to the music very much but watching it on tour was breathtaking. It just gives me hope in the goodness of every day people and was expertly written/staged.
4. Titanique
I am very biased because I saw the original cast in previews when it was still in the basement of Gristedes. I was in the front row Marla Mindelle as Celine Dion gave me a high five when she came out. I laughed so hard I cried. I've always loved the movie Titanic and it was a perfect parody. I'm glad it has continued to be successful. Also, it's the only jukebox musical I like besides Mamma Mia.
5. Schmigadoon! (Season One)
Okay so I know this isn't a "musical" in the traditional sense but HEAR me out. I think the show was across the board so perfect for me. A well crafted narrative, extremely catchy (almost too catchy) music, compelling characters to root for, and it both makes fun of and praises old timey musical theatre. I love golden age stuff and had so much fun picking out the references and themes. Cecily Strong plays a character named MELISSA (my name) who is a know-it-all about musical theatre. I have never ever ever felt more seen. If anyone needs to feel something again, or just kind of touch base with why you love theatre, watch Schmigadoon. I really loved season two as well, but most of this is about season one. Plus you can't go wrong with that cast.
Honorable mention: Beetlejuice (I just need to see it first, hopefully will see it on tour soon). I am also curious to see Kimberly Akimbo and Shucked but don't know enough about them yet to make a fully formed opinion.
