On This Day in History June 14, 1789: After the crew of H.M.S. Bounty mutineered against their abusive Lieutenant William Bligh (September 9, 1754 – December 7, 1817) on April 28, 1789, he was set adrift with the loyal crew members and some supplies in a 23-foot launch. What transpired next was one of the most amazing feats in nautical history.

The launch drifted for a total of 3,618 nautical miles (6,700 km; 4,160 mi) landing on the shores of the island of Timor, which is located in the southern end of Southeast Asia and was part of the then Dutch East Indies. The trip from mutiny to arrival to Timor took 47-days.

Bligh would be exonerated of any charges due to the mutiny on his vessel. He would eventually reach the rank of Admiral in 1814.

And they were both 500+ pages 🤣 OLD: The Night Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko 🧛‍♂️🧛‍♂️🧛‍♂️ One of those books I bought thinking, I want to read this before I watch the movie. As you know the movie was a long time ago so I've had this book for at least that long! Glad that I now can say that I've read it. I may or may not watch the movie... It was a lot more philosophical & the ending deserves the biggest eye roll *sighs* NEW: Mutiny on the Bounty by Peter FitzSimons 🛶🛶🛶 Not mu usual but I do sometimes try to read about history 😅 I enjoyed author's style of narrative prose. He made side (& sometimes snide) comments, sometimes, so that adds a bit of humour & enliven the tale for me. This is a tiny Treasure fountain pen in pink orange striped celluloid c. 1934-1939. This 3 1/2 inch lever fill pen features a gold plated stainless steel medium nib that is a Wearever type. The clip is stamped Treasure in script and the trim is lightly gold plated and shows a lot of plating loss. The cap top and barrel end pieces are black. There is no imprint. Treasure was a Wearever brand with a movie tie in to the 1935 film Mutiny on the Bounty, as noted in the 1936 Wearever Catalog and a photo from the film appears on Treasure gift boxes. Wearever registered the Treasure name on November 5, 1935. An obvious question is "Why create the Treasure brand for that movie?" Wearever also registered the name and logo "Treasure Chest" on November 5, 1935 and there are gift boxes with that logo and a photo from the 1934 film Treasure Island, released on August 17th of that year. There is also at least one newspaper advertisement for the "Treasure Island" pen and pencil combo found in the Des Moines Tribune on October 4, 1934. Treasure pens were aimed at boys and girls, were small, and be found in many colorful celluloids as lever fill pens, pen and pencil combinations, and clear barrel bulb fillers. Best Picture Project: Mutiny On The Bounty (1935)

I did not find this film particularly engaging. Gable and especially Laughton turn in solid performances but, for me, it just wasn’t enough to save this one. The last third of the film slows down to glacial pace and I found myself feeling pretty glad when it was over. Shockingly for the time, the producers did actually cast appropriate people of color for the Tahitian roles (although the roles as written aren’t very well served). There are very few roles for non-white actors in these early movies so it’s nice to see when it happens.

TAHITI THROWBACKS...

These two shots really bring the experience of sailing around French Polynesia home to me.

With long, two day stays at most of the islands we visited, and only 330 passengers on board each cruise on the Paul Gauguin, there was no rush to go ashore first thing every day. There were no great cities to dutifully traipse around.

Castles and cathedrals are pretty thin on the ground across French Polynesia as a whole. So, our sightseeing took on much more of a languid, loafing about kind of vibe. Beach days were peachy days.

So, a couple of post breakfast mimosas became something of a ritual most mornings. If I look chilled and content in that first picture- well, that's because I am.

The second picture was taken from one of our tenders- the 'Gauguin Water Beetles' as I nicknamed them.

Despite being a boutique style ship, the Paul Gauguin herself is far too big to dock at any of the islands, other than in Tahiti. Thus, we were in and out of the ship's tenders on a regular basis during our visits to and from the shore.

The local fishermen used to race after us in our wake. The wash from the propellers always threw fish to the surface. That's what the guy in the outrigger was hoping for as he paddled like an Olympic champ...
