#my computer died and my laptop needs a new battery
i wish i could pay somebody to calmly and patiently walk me through a switch from a macbook to a different os and buying a different computer. new things that break up my routine and muscle memory scare me so much and i get so stressed that i shut down. one time my dad bought me new headphones without asking and even though i DID need new headphones and now i love them, i cried because i got so stressed trying to set it up and figure out how it worked. and i LIVE on the computer so that would probably be even MORE stressful than switching from one noise making device to another. switching to windows or linux would take so much out of me especially if i had to do my own research and figure everything out myself but i know i have to someday, if only to spit in apples face.
ugh. i’ve been putting off thinking about this for so long that i think it’s time to continue putting it off bc it’s just stressing me out thinking about it

With how often you make art I'm curious how many art files you have sitting on your computer. Do you make a new clip file for every drawing?
I cannot tell you how many images are on my computer because I don't even know my own damn self.
I got new clips files. I got clip files that got different drawings on different layers. I got WIPs I've have as WIPs for 2+ years. I got a USB JUST for my Beanstalked and Glitter and Guilt comic pages.
I got a dusty laptop I am currently excavating for old WIPs to finish before the battery on it dies.
They need to make a new storage size and name it after me is all I am saying.

Laptop Update:
Contacted Amazon and got an estimated delivery date for a charger. Nov. 16. But I don't believe them.
I think it's the charger that died because the computer tries to start up normal but doesn't get to it.
I have some money saved up for a new laptop but Obi Logic tells me that the sooner I get a new laptop the sooner the new laptop dies and I have to start saving up again. So if I can hold off with this old thing for a little longer with a $10 charger I will. Because she was working fine. "Fine" because her battery has been dead for like a year and only works while plugged in.
Anyways, thats the update.
If the charger doesn't work, I'll get a new laptop. I'm thinking we are looking at around a week for me and Eddie to come back. Give or take.
Cons: That's way too long for me with this loud annoying boy living in my head.
Pro: By then we are closer to Black Friday so if I DO need a new laptop I might just wait till then and try to get a better deal.
I still have Discord but I'm admittedly a little distant and quiet because this shit about not being able to write is messing with my head.

steady upward trend-ish
Dude’s symptoms improve by the day; he’s returned to work (remotely), though he is still in isolation on the porch.
I want to sit out there with him it’s the nicest part of the house. he was like “i know that’s why i was gonna stay in the living room, you should sit out here where it’s nice,” which, like, aw, that’s sweet, but bruh i fully do have to spend several hours a day in the kitchen doing all the cooking and washing-up, it’s not like I could sit out there that much anyway.
I have pulled up a chair outside so I keep going out there to sit and shoot the shit with him. That seems sensible. He’s still coughing a bit, so he figures he’ll wait another day or two, and then try taking a rapid test before he takes his mask off around me or like, goes to pick up takeout or anything.
I am working from home today and I’ve been at it for 5.5 hours so far and have transferred twelve ostensibly half-hour videos, and edited two of them. Yes! I realized I have Adobe Premier CS 5.5 on my old computer and guess what it can do, yes it can combine and trim and export .mp4 files, and that is all I need. So this old laptop may wind up with a new lease on life, actually. Not that I’m willing to donate it to work, hell no, but if it makes it so I can do all this work from home easily and not need to go in to work much at all, then I’m gonna do the shit out of that.
I have watched, by the way, two separate live births in these home movies, which like-- I super don’t get why people record that. But I hope this family is delighted to have that footage accessible to them again.
(The one was labeled that. “[Childname]’s Live Birth” as opposed to her egg-hatching? or being laid as an egg? IDK! This is a foreign culture to me.)
Hip is real bad lately so I’ve started riding my recumbent exercise bike. The batteries died in it so it lost the 500 miles I had on the odometer, so I’m starting fresh. I rode five miles on it the other day with no batteries in it, and those will forever not count, alas.... so, four miles down, 496 to go.... It seems to help; the muscles around the hip get painfully tight but 15 minutes on the bike loosens all that up and helps it sort of settle where it’s supposed to be. Yes I’m going to see a doctor soonish, but I know that the first thing they’ll say is “have you tried exercising” and the second will probably be “have you tried losing weight” and the third thing will be “let me know if it doesn’t get any better” after not giving me any more advice, this is my lifelong experience with doctors who won’t attempt to address a condition until the second time you complain about it, so I do want to turn up with 1) this is the problem, 2) these are the times it happens, 3) these are the solutions I have already tried. It’s worth a shot!
(For the record, the single worst thing I can do to my hip is sleep on either side, my front, or my back. The second-worst thing I can do is certain solo adult activities, which are now Illegal; who knew a hip joint could be a prude! Partnered is fine for some reason though, which is.... weird, but for obvious reasons that is currently Not Available to me. Alas.)
I’ve also been doing a bit of sewing. Now that I can edit videos it’s not quite the end of the world if I leave the room and come back and the half-hour tape ended at 21 minutes. I can just trim the deadspace off! (less than 5 minutes I won’t bother fixing but more than that, I figure a customer deserves not to have that to deal with.) So I set a timer and vanish to the basement for 15 minutes, and then I come back up and work on hand-sewing at the table for the last 10 minutes of the tape. I’ve cut out the pieces for one of those boyfriend pillows, and I’m assembling a dress i cut out ages ago. The fact that I can see and smell the outdoors and the weather has been lovely is making this also much more pleasant. And since I’m tied to the kitchen so much, I’ve been keeping up on dishes and cooking a lot. Which is awesome!
The downside is that it’s very easy and addictive to hyperfocus on the next video, the next video, the next video, so I worked 12 hours yesterday and will probably do the same today. It’s fine, I know my boss would be pissed to pay overtime, so I’m just going to take a bunch of this week’s hours and report them for next week, which is awesome. (Am I going to make it so I work 6 hours or less every day so they don’t deduct the half-hour lunch breaks they don’t pay me for that I never take? Maybe. Well I’m not taking the breaks, I’m chained to my watch and I’ve had multiple meals go cold because they were ready but I had to change out the tape.)
Anyway-- today I did take a break, actually, and I spent it sitting in the drive-thru pharmacy line at Rite Aid, to get a proper PCR test. I want negative results before chicken day on Tuesday, so I can be positive I won’t expose anyone. The rapid tests have all been negative but I have multiple friends who’ve tested negative on those but still been contagious, which is what I’m worried about-- I will trust a negative rapid test for Dude because he’s had one come out positive, but I feel like some people just for whatever reason don’t hold the virus in the right place for the rapid test, or just don’t-- vibe with it or whatever. IDK, I’m no scientist, I just know I wanted a Real Test for the chicken crew.
Yes yes I’ve also been writing but that has been sort of scattered. I should have a chapter update for tomorrow though.

My laptop battery died on me very abruptly right before I went to Spain (and right before I was going to backup all my files / temporarily move pics off my phone for space / etc. - it was a whole ordeal to scramble and get the files recovered to a separate hard drive at Best Buy 🙄) so I had to buy a new one and get it bare bones operational, and postpone actual computer setup until later.
Well later was today, I have installed a grand total of *2* programs on it - antivirus and an old version of Photoshop Elements (through Adobe's site!) - and it needed to reboot to finish install and now it cannot boot back up for some reason 🥲

I haven’t been able to play my game in weeks cause my laptop keeps having problems. First my battery almost exploded so my boyfriend installed a new one as well as 2 new ssd’s but in the process I was forced to install the EA app which made my game suuuuuper laggy. Then my laptop charger died and Razer has changed their charger port so I had to get a replacement off of Ebay which took forever. Then like a week later my laptop slid off of my lap (which has happened a billion times before) so I picked it up and the screen went black. Now if I open my game, it’ll crash my entire laptop after 2 minutes. Better Exceptions doesn’t pull up any mod issues and there are no lastCrash.txt files generated from the crash. And usually wouldn’t it just crash to my desktop, not shut down my entire computer?
I’m so worried that I’m going to need a new laptop. A new one with comparable specs to what I have now is double the price of my current one was when I bought it because of the chip shortage.😭

I don’t typically do vents/rants on my Tumblr anymore but I seriously need to vent about my latest situation.
My Windows 10 laptop suddenly and randomly died a few days ago. Earlier in the day it worked just fine, I had it at my grandma’s house and it ran just fine. But after bringing it home, it just stopped working. I thought the battery just crapped out, but according to the people at Micro Center (where my laptop still currently is rn) the entire motherboard shit the bed. This entire situation has been depressing me/stressing me the hell out for a number of reasons.
The only other semi-functioning laptop I have or ANY sort of computer that’s not my parents’ is an older Windows 7 one I used for many years before deciding to get a new laptop. It can’t handle more than 3 tabs in Firefox without it crashing, it can’t play TF2, it can barely handle Twitch or YouTube streams even with my fine internet, and it won’t even let me post or reblog stuff on Tumblr. I had to type this all in a Google Doc on my computer, then open the doc on my phone and copy it all on here. It is really hard for me to adapt to big changes like this, and in particular having all my higher-end games and things taken away from me in a flash like that has been extremely disheartening to me.
Then there’s the pricing. I had to get advice for getting my laptop because I may be a tech geek, but I’m not 100% knowledgeable on graphics cards or what’s the latest and greatest due to me ALWAYS being the last to know about... basically everything. I naively thought maybe it wouldn’t cost too much money to get it fixed, but the motherboard is $1200... the average cost of a new gaming laptop. So I’m back to square one. And this time, I have to pay for the laptop instead of my parents or sister, because the warranty expired.
This shit has been severely exhausting me and making me fall back into my negative feelings and mood. It REALLY just shows me that my life is super boring and my city is boring and I have nothing to do and literally ANYTHING that can make me happy or feel better just doesn’t work on older computers, if that makes sense. I thought MAYBE this year might have a better start or be an improvement over the last but if my luck is any indication, given all this shit that just might not be in the cards for me.

For anyone wondering why I haven't written anything lately, my computers are the reason.
I have:
- laptop from 2009 that has been everything I needed and more, capable of So Many Functions, comfortable keyboard, my beloved. Unfortunately, the touchpad barely works, the software is too old to interact with anything new, most websites no longer work on it, making uploading fic a nightmare, and now the battery has died a terrible death.
- shiny newer laptop that can do fuck all. Want to do this? Here's a shiny app! How about this simple function? Download an app! Want to do this basic function all laptops used to come with? An app!! Storage on external devices? What r storage? Why is external? Use CLOUD!!! Forget files and directories! Also, whoever designed the keyboard is a dumbass, because it's white letters against shiny metallic coloring. I'm close to using a fucking Sharpie to draw the letters on.
It also does something I've never seen a laptop do before: it refuses to open a WordPad document. I used to overcome the old software issue by pasting a fic into a WordPad document, then going to the library or another computer to paste it into AO3. The new laptop will open a new WordPad document, but it won't reopen it; it opens it in Microsoft Word (which I don't have) and won't do anything else. UGH!!
(And if anyone is wondering why I have this new laptop, options were very, very limited at the time, and it's still one of the BETTER laptops!)

How I got a macbook
The short of it is - I rekindled an old friendship about two weeks ago and while we were catching up, I mentioned that I needed a laptop since I was using my sister's own and my friend just offered me his macbook. I collected it later that day and have been using it since.
Side note: lately, I've realized that I don't need to tell stories (as in always relate the bridge of events) even if I think they're really interesting. Not really piggybacking off my last statement, this is one of my favorites to date because I wasn't even wondering about the bridge of events, I just kept telling myself that I have the laptop.
The long of it is this:
I was at the library where I frequent to do work and pull smalls (a colloquial term for making small talk, but mine personally is always entertaining conversations).
I had a meeting at 1 pm, and I had asked one of the library assistants if I could use the conference room. He assured me that I could, on the grounds that I took pictures with the animals for the conservation exhibit that was going on at the time. I agreed, obviously, and headed for the adult section.
While walking to the adult section, this guy I had blocked back in 2020 because he was high quality garbage called out to me saying, "Hi Selene," and I was like, "Hi Frank," and then I beelined for the adult section because I. Was not. Doing dis.
Y'all, I was in mild panic mode because of all the places to see this dude? The library? Literally, no one goes to this one because it sucks and is in a terrible location. I go there because there aren't a lot of people, the wifi is decent, it's really convenient for my commute and the staff members are all really nice to me. Why was he there? His sister was in charge of the animal exhibit and he was helping her.
But apparently, I was doing it because he followed me and we started talking. At first, I was like, wtf am I doing, then at some point, subconsciously, I decided we were friends again. The conversation was good and I caught him up on what I'd been doing lately since we hadn't spoken since mid-2020.
Stuff like this has been happening lately. Old, cool friends have been resurfacing, new ones have been appearing, and they all match my vibe these days.
My boss then messaged me to say that she'd be in office for the meeting, if I wanted to meet her there. I complained to my newly remade friend that it's kinda late for her to say stuff like that when I don't have enough time to make it there by one. He simply replied that he was going up on that side, so he could drive me there. Obviously I agreed because I didn't want to travel there. Good thing too because I forgot the charger and the laptop has no battery. Had I stayed, I'd have had to go back home to have the meeting anyway.
We dipped out of the library at around 12:20 pm, and while we were just catching up in the car, I told him that I'd been using my sister's laptop (ironically, he had given her that laptop). He just told me that he had a MacBook he wasn't using, so I could take it when we came back after my meeting.
I was like, "Are you fucking serious?"
He's like, "Yeah. It's not a problem. I have like two other computers."
And I was like, "Thank you so fucking much, I really appreciate that."
We continued catching up, I went to my meeting, he picked me up after, and we went to his house to get it. I've been using it since, and in fact, it's what I used to write this post.
Also, if you're wondering about what happened to the conference room... I did forget about that. When I went back to the library the following day, the library assistant did complain to me that I set him up, so we're good now.
Onto the manifesting side of things:
I just wanna say that I did get kinda desperate cuz I'd been needing a laptop for about 2 years at that point, but with my job being WFH and I didn't have enough cash for the laptop I wanted (a MacBook, obviously), I kicked my affirming into high gear.
Ya girl was not about to be waiting another six months or indefinitely for what she wanted. Especially since it was messing with my daily quality of life.
I think I was affirming for it for about a week before it showed up, but what I always made sure to do was remind myself that the lack of options in front of me did not affect the manifestation itself.
i.e. I'm gonna get it regardless of what's going on rn.
Anyways, I got it. I wasn't even thinking about what the bridge of events would have been.
Ya fave Moon Babe,
Selene 💜 🌚

My old laptop ^ has just gone into retirement after 7 years of use. I’ll miss it. I’m actually a little sad that it’s retiring, even though it’s just a computer. It’s battery only lasts for like three hours; so I needed a new one. And it’s helped me write a lot of material.
It was actually a clunky, slow thing: and it’s hard drive died on me three times. But I will still miss it. Ah wells. It’s still there in the cupboard if this newbie laptop decides to perish on me too.
 Farewell my friend.

I’ve been doing some armchair diagnostics on my laptop and man, I joked about my laptop seeming to have a “pressure point,” but apparently one possibility is not that far off - the issue potentially is something to do with the REED sensor? Reed switch? which detects ig when the lid is closed? so that the laptop goes to sleep?
but you see the problem is, there’s a spot just to the right of the trackpad where sometimes if I lay my hand on it, or if I accidentally move my phone there and the magnet latch touches it, makes the laptop to go sleep too.
I wonder if there’s a fix for that....

You know what’s funny is whenever I make a tech post I get people going “this is blatantly untrue” and I get people going “this is really good information and everyone needs to know it” and the dividing line is how much time you spend with people who are tech literate.
Yep, I would tell my computer savvy friends where they could get keycaps and fix their keyboards; I don’t even have to bother telling my computer savvy friends how to run a fifteen year old laptop because we’re all pretty good at it.
But GODDAMN I just read a response to my “cheap computer season” post that claimed that it was totally reasonable to run a macbook from 2010 and
Look.
That’s not a reasonable thing to tell a student who needs a functional computer to do research and write papers. (have fun trying to find installation discs from when the OS was still named after cats and have fun trying to get a browser to get along with that OS)
You know why most people bring me laptops with missing keys? Because the key got ripped off by their two-year-old and damaged the soldering in the keyboard and I have no idea it’s going to be “oh, yeah, that’s a ten dollar fix” or “sorry, that’s going to be an hour and a half to disassemble and reassemble and we’ll have to order you a new keyboard specific to that model out of new old stock” and the thing is the second one is much, much, much more common in my experience than the first.
Do I think you need to replace a laptop when the bezel is cracked? No. I also don’t carry my laptop powered on in the bag with a flashdrive sticking out of the USB port. Customers do weird things that I don’t understand and when a customer tells me they want me to fix the bezel they think it’s a twenty-dollar snap-on repair because they have no idea how this works and then they get mad at me when I explain “no, you’ve gotta have this specific piece of plastic, these haven’t been made in five years, and you might be better off buying a used model online than trying to track down a new bezel.”
So here’s the thing: Can Macs get viruses?
There are three answers here.
“No, of course not, Macs are made to be virus-proof”
“Macs need antivirus protection because, while it is less common than infections for PCs, there are types of malware that can infect macs and it’s worthwhile to guard against that”
“tEcHnIcAlLy a virus has to be self-replicating and IOS’s file management system [or some other bullshit] prevents that so TECHNICALLY Macs can’t get viruses and what you need is anti-malware software if you need anything because you’re fairly likely to have security through obscurity”
I’m aware of the third position and voicing the second position to people who believe the first position.
YES TECHNICALLY YOU CAN KEEP A COMPUTER RUNNING INDEFINITELY AND YES IT’S TOTALLY POSSIBLE YOUR LAPTOP WILL LAST TEN YEARS.
“Well if you treat it right and run it well it’ll be in great shape for a long time”
YES THAT IS CORRECT DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MANY PEOPLE WHO DON’T WORK ON THEIR OWN CARS DRIVE AROUND WITH THE OIL CHANGE LIGHT ON FOR MONTHS?!?
Tons of people in the world today use computers. They use computers every day, they use computers at home and at school and at work.
Tons of people drive every day. They use cars for fun and for commuting and for their jobs.
That doesn’t mean that all (or even most, or even half) of the people using these things is any good at keeping them running, or even has the barest idea of how to start tracking down a problem.
Someone in the notes of that post described a green line on their screen and thought that was a symptom of hard drive problems. I don’t have the hours in the day to catch this person up to speed on why a display issue on a laptop isn’t indicative of hard drive issues.
Do you know how much people think it’s going to cost to get data off of a broken drive? Not “won’t power up” not “won’t spin” but “I dropped this and part fell off and now it won’t power up or spin and also the platter is chipped”? I’m going to have to send that shit to a clean room and the customer is *staggered* that it might cost more than a hundred dollars to get their data. “Outrageous, what kind of blackmail operation are you trying to run here, just plug it in and get my pictures.”
A year or so ago I was at Jiffy Lube (ew). I’d been shooting the shit with the mechanic when a parent and child rolled in in a panic. And they should have been panicking! They’d thrown a fucking rod because they’d been driving with no oil in the car for god knows how long because neither of them had had the oil changed in the two years they’d owned the vehicle.
*I* can keep a 30-year-old car running. I can put a belt back on an engine in a dark parking lot with a wrench and a headlamp. I can drop a gas tank and replace my fuel filter and thumb my nose at the mechanics who tried to upsell me on “replacing your old, worn-out air filter” the day after I’d popped a new one into my truck.
These folks couldn’t keep a new car running with three alarms telling them what was wrong.
*I* can power up my 2005 macbook running Leopard and use garage band to record a song or do some design work on my copy of Adobe CS3; I can kludge its FF3.5 browser into playing nice with the internet and accept that it’s going to be a slow piece of shit.
The lady who called me confused by the fact that the password to her email was different than the login information for her grocery store rewards account will not be able to function if she gets a pop-up that says she’s using an outdated browser and will think it’s a virus if her bank won’t let her log in on that browser.
And you know what, I’m kind of sick of this attitude.
I would *fucking adore it* if computers were actually easy to repair; I’d love it if you could run new OSs on old hardware (especially on macs because I think apple are kind of shitheads about planned obsolescence).
But you know what, no, most people *CAN’T* reasonably expect to use a ten-year-old computer and have pleasant experience of it. It’s going to run slow. It’s going to shut down when they don’t want it to. The battery is going to swell slightly with the heat and your touchpad is going to go nuts. Your USB ports will stop working. Standard wear and tear that most people don’t know how to protect against and don’t know how to repair is going to make it harder to use AND software requirements will outstrip the hardware capabilities of the computer.
If your old computer sucks it’s not your fault. If you can’t happily use a 10-year-old laptop to do your homework that’s okay, it wasn’t designed for you to use it that way and YOU SHOULDN’T FEEL GUILTY ABOUT IT.
Because that’s kind of what a lot of these “well anybody should realistically be able to run a laptop from 2010″ responses comes down to: if you need new hardware you’re just not doing it right. If you have to replace your computer you didn’t make good choices when you bought it. If your battery dies it’s because you didn’t take care of it.
No. No. No. No.
This shit is A) designed to fail and B) actually really hard to keep running (hey how many blown capacitors do you think someone has to have on their motherboard before you say it’s not their fault for wanting to replace the laptop)
ALSO SOMEONE IN THE RESPONSES OF THAT POST LITERALLY SAID THAT IF YOUR BATTERY DIED AT THREE YEARS IT WAS BECAUSE YOU WEREN’T DOING THE DRAIN CHARGE CYCLE RIGHT AND FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU. It’s discharge cycles and heat, motherfucker; they are going to fail at some point and people shouldn’t feel bad if their batteries stop working after a couple years.
UGH.
You shouldn’t have to be a mechanic. You shouldn’t have to be a computer technician. Yeah, your shit will last longer if you know how to take care of it but, fuck. Imagine you were still using internet speeds from 2010. Imagine all your devices still had USB 2.0. Imagine you couldn’t log onto your online bank because your hardware won’t run he software that your bank recognizes because the hardware manufacturer decided it won’t support the older hardware.
What I was trying to get across in that initial post was “computers fail, and they fail pretty frequently; your life will be better and you will save money if you plan on replacing them at a regular interval and have reasonable expectations in terms of cost and failure. So buy a cheap computer now because you’re probably going to need one at some point”
And now I’ve got to Do A Yell about how there’s no ethical consumption under capitalism and it’s unreasonable to expect tired, overworked, broke people to become experts in computer repair in order to do their homework or play the goose game.
FUCK THAT.
IT’S CHEAP COMPUTER SEASON MOTHERFUCKERS. LAPTOP FAILURE RATES INCREASE AT THREE TO FIVE YEARS AND DESKTOP FAILURE RATES INCREASE AT FIVE TO SEVEN YEARS. RIGHT NOW THERE ARE DISCOUNTS ON NEW COMPUTERS AND IT’S CHEAP TO GET AN EXTENDED WARRANTY.
LIVE LONG AND PROSPER AND WORK ON COMPUTERS IF YOU WANNA AND PLAN TO REPLACE REGULARLY IF YOU DON’T WANT TO WORK ON COMPUTERS.
ALSO CHANGE YOUR FUCKING OIL YOU’RE PROBABLY DUE.

So, my laptop's battery died and I had to buy a new one, and I went to the technician to buy a new one and see if anything else was wrong with it. The man there was so shocked when I told him I had it for nearly 17 years 😂😂 And except the battery everything works well! But he kept asking me how it is possible to have a laptop so old work so well?? Without any problems?? And am I sure I don't want a new one?? Lol, I felt like Zen 😂 How do you think Saeyoung and Saeran would react? (or Yoosung)
Seven doesn’t know whether to laugh, cry, or ask God how that’s possible. It’s great to take care of things and be mindful of what it’s capable of, but even if you do the right thing and build it from the bottom up, it’s still going to reach a limit at some point whether anyone likes it or not. How you managed to keep it alive as you did makes him impressed and mystified.
He wants to know what your trick was, but you don’t have a magic trick. He bristles and says that you’re a good luck charm and that means you’ve got to stick close to him. He needs you to stand by when he’s working because that’s going to pretty much guarantee the safety of robots, babies, and more. Just be there by his side and look cute!
GE Saeran built everything he had. It took forever and it made his brain feel like it was going to burn off as he did it. He had to learn everything that his twin knew and then some, because to beat his brother, he had to be better and stronger as soon as possible. He’s surprised that you managed to keep something alive for that long, but it’s not a big deal to him.
He doesn’t really tinker much with computers anymore. He has his phone and that’s all he’s okay with for now. If he needs to get work done or something, he’ll grab it, but he prefers to not have the technology in his face for obvious reasons. He does compliment your care of your devices, though. He’d ruffle your hair and kiss your cheek with a smile.
