tldr: AI database scraping is a bitch and man the social media landscape looks pretty bleak rn woof

when deviantart starting pushing the eclipse redesign and got rid of access to the old UI it lost a lot of features and customization options and such that I and many other people enjoyed so it lost a lot of its charm, function, and users. so I stopped using it as much if at all

then when AI generated images started to pop off, the front pages (which always had an issue of always either only showing the same 5 popular artists who were buddy buddy with the site staff or untagged/filtered MS paint sonic inflation or anime foot fetish bases or some crap) became loaded with AI junk instead of, oh y'know, actual art

final straw was when deviantart started making their own AI image generator and made all accounts automatically opt in to having their images possibly used for the AI's database, and if you weren't ok with that, you had to manually go in and find and shut off all those new hidden settings. I felt I couldn't trust deviantart anymore, I liked having my deviantart page still up even if I wasn't active because it was my first social media site where I shared art back when I was 13 years old, a literal whole decade of growth and memories. but I felt I couldn't have that anymore without risking it all being scraped or misused, so I finally deleted a while back. still kind of bummed about it but yeah no deviantart ain't what it used to be

I'm kind of in a similar boat with twitter right now. my posts get no traction, I never see content from the people I signed up to see posts from anymore and instead get nothing but blue checks and scams and ads and bots and AI, you can't even scroll more than 20 minutes without RATE LIMIT EXCEEDED or paying up and joining blue check loser circlejerk club, oh hey did you notice all tweet contents and imbeds prior to 2014 just got nuked off the place of the earth with no warning, they're trying to make their own AI with a database fed by tweets unless you lock up your accounts, but locked accounts are reporting their tweets and activity being seen by people who don't follow them and should have no way to see any of their posts but they show up somehow, anything can get you shadowbanned or blacklisted by The Algorithm, and rumor has it you may have to soon send government ID and sensitive info and images of your face to twitter HQ for verification to squash down the bots (that toooootally didn't get worse after the company got bought by that X obsessed nutjob nah this time he'll totally fix it you guys trust us)

yeah, I totally trust those loser dweebs who completely tanked one of the most popular social media platforms of the past decade in less than 6 months I totally don't see anything bad happening with having my legal government info on the twitter servers

my name is mo, i'm nineteen and i am a freelance illustrator & writer from europe, or more precisely germany! i am a massive star wars fan (as one can probably tell) and have been hyper-fixating on that and other science fiction stuff since i was little so i'd definitely like to say that you should probably expect that on this blog.

i have been drawing for a little over eight years now and plan on getting into game design in the near future once i graduate. i also really enjoy writing and reading aside from daydreaming of space and my favourite genres usually drift between sci-fi and fantasy types of books. basically, i really like escaping reality.

however, aside from facing enemies and issues as a super cool jedi master, i also deal with my neurological disability in my day to day life, which forces me to permanently be dependent on my ferrari - er - wheelchair. so if my posts lack, i'm probably laying in hospital for driving too fast with it. i do urge you to check out my main blog @momojedi! when i'm not drooling over captain rex or gushing over star wars to my boyfriend, you'll likely find me there, where i pretty much post every week - if not every day.

x - - - - - - - - - - - - - x Another day, another 'what the fuck is going to happen today.' You'd made it three months into the job, and unlike the dozens of other people who started around the same time you did, you hadn't suffered any truly severe mental breakdowns quite yet. There was a vague memory in the back of your head about company statistics regarding the amount of new recruits that lose their mind within their first few weeks, and you'd overcome this stigma the other employees had put in you. Between all of what you experienced within the first three months, at this point there was so much trauma to be uncovered that we may as well just keep digging deeper. Why not stay? You got to experience what was quite literally a major collapse of the company and then quite literally the chopping block resulting from the aftermath of 'ROBOTUS'. That was.. Something, yeah.

But, you finally had a place in the company that you really excelled at; Media Manipulation. Within the three months you'd spent in the department, it's been a lot more interesting than you'd ever think. There was something surreal about seeing where memes and popular trends are artificially inflated to reach the masses with mental propaganda. But, on the lighter scale of your job, Gigi likes you. The head of the department actually knows you exist in the crowd of faces the office offers, which could work out positively for you job-wise. In the back of your mind, there was also an idea stirring around. It didn't take you long to decipher which employees were considered "more important", and Gigi was one of them. Not only that, but so is Reagan Ridley. The thought of her made your heart sink into your stomach for a moment before a warm anxiety spread through your chest soon after. Ever since your first day, meeting her in that elevator was just the beginning of the absolutely debilitating crush you'd developed on her. You couldn't help but remember the brief moment she had interviewed you about your position in the department when she was looking for someone to fire. The way her gaze held yours. She honestly intimidated you a bit, both being your boss and your crush.

You pulled your hands up to your face, resting your elbows on your desk as you rubbed the exhaustion from your eyes. Sitting and scrolling through Twitter for the last two hours had not only rotted your brain out of your ears but your will to live along with it. With a huff, you raised from your office chair to stretch, your eyes falling across the room and through the glass wall that separated the department from the rest of the office. People and creatures all intermingled together, even in offices that were in eye-shot. Flopping back down in your chair, you took a chug of your water before slouching back down to continue sanding your brain down with whatever would pass your time. The door pushed open, causing you to jump out of your daze and immediately look alive. Gigi had come back, Reagan in tow. The two seemed to be lost in a discussion, walking into the office without even glancing at those working around them. Your gaze seemed to just... follow her. From the door to across the office, you couldn't help but just stare. How round and soft her face looked, her big expressive eyes, albeit tired. Even though it was messy, you couldn't help but wonder how soft her hair was when she took it out of that ponytail... There was hotness overtaking your cheeks as you lower yourself back down into your seat, heart pounding. Again, just. Debilitating. You'd just freeze and stare, unsure one what to do or say. Reagan and Gigi seemed to have looped around fairly quickly, their voices steadily getting louder as they began to approach the exit door again. 'Oh god. She's coming back around. What do I do? What do I do? What do I-' your mind racing. You felt your body just tense from the nervousness building up in your chest. A snap brought you back to Earth. You blinked out of your panicked daze, only to look up and see Reagan and Gigi both locked directly on you. Reagan must've snapped you back because she was already standing awful close to your seat. They both looked concerned. "You were staring pretty hard there. You feeling alright?" Gigi raised an eyebrow at you. "Your face is entirely red." "Maybe they need to lie down-" you could hear Reagan echo behind her. "N-No, I'm fine! Thanks though, really," you wiped the sweat that had formed on your brow off with your sleeve. "Really, I'm perfectly fine." You could tell neither of them were really convinced. "Alright, well, keep yourself together. You've come this far without a breakdown, you can keep going-" Gigi trailed off as her and Reagan made their way to the door. "Why do you even have them on Twitter? No wonder they're breaking down," You could hear Reagan echo behind her as they made their way out and the door slammed shut behind them, immediately sending you crashing back down into your chair. What the hell was THAT?! Embarrassing is what it was, like holy shit that was bad.You looked like you were going to pass out in your swivel seat. How would you ever recover from something like /that?/

if you want the short-but-also-long version, here's a carrd i made listing most of the comics im reading (not all--im following smth like 200 comics week to week--but most). at the bottom is linked my side acct on twitter where i post exclusively abt webcomics. my all time list, tho... let me know your fave genres or what you like to read and i can give more specific recs, but SOME OF my faves rn (i have. so many more i could list. i just dont want this post to be So long know) are

webtoon originals:

Lavender Jack - ALL TIME FAVE. vigilante / mystery comic with an absolutely gorgeous art style and really fun writing/characters, simultaneously following the eponymous lavendar jack as he exposes the city's richest criminals, as well as the detective trying to expose him. it's fun bc the mystery isnt his identity--they tell you who he is!--it's watching him act and not knowing why, unravelling that at the same time as the detective. all four of the main characters are so good and interesting (i am Obsessed with the way LJ talks), the art and coloring are lovely. its so fucking good i cannot recommend it enough

Eleceed - this comic is so silly and i love it so much. local high schooler feeds a stray cat, finds out the cat is actually The most powerful super-powered human man in the country who was injured, accidentally turned himself into a tabby, and is now lying low. the guy starts mentoring the kid, who also has powers, while keeping his location a secret. the protag is a sweetheart, i love the cat mentor, and i love all the friends the protagonist makes and how their friendships are portrayed. second fave comic of all time. i love it

Seasons of Blossom - every season of this is a different story following different sections of the main cast. first season is a fake dating plotline, the second season is a boy and his older brother's best friend finding closure over the brother's suicide from a few years before. s1 is a lot of fun and s2 is devastating and really good. it's currently on the third season which is really good. the art's really pretty and i thiink it's getting made into a kdrama?

City of Blank - the world is populated by creatues called "blanks," which will steal any face they see, slowly becoming that person by generating their bodies and gaining their memories. humans have to wear masks to keep their faces from being stolen. the main character, rex, is a half-blank. when his brother, mikah, was stabbed, he allowed rex to steal his face, and now with mikah's memories coming slowly in rex is trying to solve mikah's murder. the worldbuilding is Really fun, i like the art a lot, i think the characters are super fun, the humor is charming. i really like this comic!!

Gourmet Hound - this is a complete series! follows the main character as she tries to find the chef who made her favorite dish at her late grandmother's closed restaurant. it's a really gorgeously drawn and written comic about loss and processing grief. it's been finished for a while and is an old favorite of mine

Surviving Romance - i have no idea how to explain this comic. it's insane. i have fun reading it. do you like insane timeloop stories? try this one. this author also has a fun complete comic called The Makeup Remover i quite like

Heir's Game - i didnt know how to explain this one so here's the series description: "When a new heir to the duchy of Belluna comes of age, there is held the Heir's Game: a brutal series of duels to determine the heir's bodyguard. When Theuden, the new heir, meets Isran, a quiet duelist with a mysterious past, their love will threaten to change everything." very fun and dramatic historical romance comic w very nice art. author also has a completely zombie apocalypse comic, shootaround, which i liked

Swimming Lessons for a Mermaid - this comic is complete (and might be behind a paywall / daily pass) and so cheesy but i love it. a mermaid who can barely swim is given legs, but starts taking lessons with a competitive swimmer to try to improve her swimming ability. i really like the way interactions between friends in this comic are written, it's just really fun to read

Infinity - this is almost unbearably corny but also its a comic about fencing epee which. i love webomics and i love fencing epee i cant not be in love with it

Dark Zone - teenagers have been going missing for years when, for the first time, one reappears. however, he doesn't come back quite right. really interesting worldbuilding and mystery, i also love the romance between the leading lads and the way friend interactions are written. very cool scifi comic

The Beast of Hadingley Hill - supernatural romance comic. leading lady goes to work for a princess who is cursed to look like a monster and is trying to find a suitor who can stand to be around her. it's pretty new and shaping up to be reallt interesting. this author has another completely webcomic, lorenna immaculate, which i also really liked. i also rlly like the art style!!

EQUALIZE - i. also dont know how to explain this one. crime/mystery comic. some of them have superpowers but its sort of an aside. i think this comic is so fun, really balances serious and silly w great chemistry between the leading lads. i cannot tell if its meant to be romance or platonic but i love them so much. the art is really neat and i especially love the bright coloring style and sense of humor

Photoaxis - a really compassionate comic about an enthusiastic spider photographer's encounters with ghosts. i like the leading characters a lot and the comic is like... it all feels like being awake and at peace at 4am. the art's also really nice, feels very much like a scrapbook

Broccoli Soup - i also dont know how to explain this comic. very interesting and surreal comic about hopping worlds and being polite. the art changes with every new world, which makes it a neat read

Nobody's Library - updates daily, follows a librarian hopping from world to world trying to find books that have gotten lost from his magic library. he's very tired and just wants to get his books and go home but keeps getting involved in criminal shenanigans. its just fun. i own a volume of this one!

Raining Knives - completed comic i think about all the time. main character, dylan, is haunted by the ghost of his murdered twin, jerry, who insists dylan solve his murder. dylan doesn't need to solve it, though--dylan did it. this is is a dramatic mystery comic and a super good read

Lucid Memories - this comic is ongoing and behind a paywall / wait-until-free. mason loses his memories in a car wreck and has to play a gameshow in his dreams to get them back. the art is really pretty, it's also a very neat mystery of both who mason used to be and the purpose/identity/motives of the seemingly harmless/charming game show host. i really like this

Castoff - this is also like. my all time favorite comic. fantasy comic about vector, a boy cursed so that anyone who meets his eyes instantly becomes afraid of him. he's mistakenly arrested by a bounty hunter for treason, but when she tries to turn him in, his powers act up and the two of them are rocketed across the country. now they have to get along while she tries to bring him home (and make some friends along the way). i've been reading this comic for years and am so charmed by all the cast and the art

Sleepless Domain - very dramatic magical girl mystery/romance comic. i dont read a lot of magical girl stuff but i really love the worldbuilding in this one, plus the main characters are a lot of fun, and i love the romance between the leading ladies. really cute but also terrifying

Widdershins - i own two volumes of this one! the magic system and worldbuilding are really interesting, all of the characters are super charming. wizards in the fictional city of widdershins, one of the four magical "anchors." i LOVE the chapter hangman's knot so much, but i also love all the rest of the comic. its a really fun

UPDATE: As of May 29, Chauvin has been charged for third-degree murder. Continue pressuring officials for harsher charges because what he did was clearly not an accident. Also continue pushing for the other cops who were at the scene to be charged.

Several strong typhoons battered the Philippines, especially Luzon, and caused billions of casualties through the typhoons Quinta (international name, Molave), Rolly (international name, Goni), and Ulysses (international name, Vamco). I know my account isn’t that big but I hope I could help spread awareness about my country’s situation in any platform I have.

A total of 242,220 residents or 57,742 families from 1,008 barangays in Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Western and Eastern Visayas were affected by Typhoon Quinta. Of the total affected, 65,579 persons or 16,830 families sought refuge in evacuation centers. Cost of damage to agriculture and infrastructure has also risen to ₱737.1 million, with Calabarzon bearing the highest cost worth ₱593.1 million. Typhoon Quinta partially destroyed 27,213 houses while 2,315 others were totally damaged. At least 330 passengers remain stranded in the different ports of Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region, Western and Eastern Visayas. (source: CNN)

Rolly, at its peak, made 2 landfalls in Bicol region (Catanduanes and Bicol), prompting some 96,887 families or 372,381 persons to evacuate their homes. Some 147 houses were submerged in lahar and debris from Mt. Mayon. The country's 18th storm this year left an estimated P694.37 million worth of damage to agriculture in Bicol alone, according to the report citing the Department of Agriculture. Typhoon Ulysses, the Philippines' 21st tropical cyclone for 2020, began pummeling Luzon on November 11. Still reeling from Super Typhoon Rolly (Goni), Bicol was the first to face Ulysses' wrath, as the typhoon triggered massive floods in parts of the region. Ulysses then battered Calabarzon, Central Luzon, and Metro Manila, unleashing powerful winds and torrential rain that left neighborhoods submerged and people appealing for aid and rescue. 150,000 farmers and 275,000 hectares of land have incurred losses amounting up to P10-B (~268 USD) after the devastations caused by Typhoons Quinta, Rolly, and Ulysses. That’s from agriculture alone, the losses from the massive flooding of Cagayan and Isabela are still not included in the computation. (source: CNN)

Massive flooding in Cagayan, due to continuous environment abuse

The massive flooding in Cagayan, the worse yet in 40 years, only shows environmental neglect. The biggest problem is the degradation of forests in both Cagayan and Sierra Madre sides. Today, the Cagayan River isn’t even visible as the region submerges in flood.

The province is the catch basin of rain water coming from Cagayan Valley and the Cordillera Administrative Region. Illegal logging has veeb a problem as well for the past 5 decades. The flooding has affected at least 179, 940 individuals in 26 municipalities of Cagayan. More than 11,000 families have been evacuated.

Several factors caused the floods, including recent tropical cyclones and tail-end of a cold front, which prompted the release of water from Magat Dam. Excess water flowed to Cagayan River and its tributaries, flooding communities. (source: Rappler)

Dam operators must be held accountable for Cagayan and Isabela floods

The widespread flooding in Cagayan that gripped the nation this weekend is partly being blamed on the massive release of water from Magat Dam. Typhoon Ulysses made landfall late night Wednesday, November 11, and by Thursday, November 12, Magat Dam opened 7 gates and discharged 6,244 cubic meters of water per second. Dams including Magat rushed to open gates only at the height of Ulysses.

Magat did not make sufficient water drawdown 2 to 3 days prior to Ulysses, as mandated by its protocol, because its gates were not even open 3 to 4 days prior to landfall According to the Magat Dam protocol, there should be a drawdown 2-3 days before the expected landfall.

They had 3 days in advance [to pre-release water], the forecast was made at least 3 days in advance. If you did not contain the release within 1-2 days only but rather within 5 days, then the rivers will be able to handle it better.

The panic on Friday night was partly due to a dearth of information coming from inside Cagayan, which national media had not physically reached at that time. The steady stream of updates only came from the Twitter feed of Vice President Leni Robredo, who herself was also only getting updates from Manila. (source: Rappler)

Save Sierra Madre, Stop Kaliwa Dam

Sierra Madre is the longest mountain range in the Philippines and it protects the country from strong typhoons. However, illegal and abusive deforestation is keeping it from maintaining its full functionality. Kaliwa Dam is proposed to be built along Sierra Madre mountain range, and the environment experts and the citizens are wary of its possible repercussions.

Pampanga Needs Help

Just like what’s happening in Cagayan and Isabela, Pampanga is also facing the run-offs by massive floods from Sierra Madre, Tarlac, and Nueva Ecija. Water from Bulacan will go down to Macabebe and Masantol. Waters in San Luis, Pampanga already reached head level.

Citizen-blaming

Office of Civil Defense Asec. Casiano Monilla denies that government was caught flat-footed by Ulysses and shifts blame to citizens who supposedly did not heed early warnings. The prime duty of the government is to serve and protect its people. The government refuses to be held accountable from their own incompetence. There wasn’t even a proper briefing before the typhoon struck.

Sen. Gordon also told the public that “No one will take care of you or your family best other than you. Don’t rely on the government.” This also caused unrest in the citizens who wanted to ensure the safety of one another. Because it only seems that we always have to beg to be served when in fact, all the money circulating the government came from taxpayers’ hardworks .

Oust Duterte, Now

Amidst all struggles the Filipino people are facing right now, from the covid virus up to the cyclone casualties, all of it comes down with the toxic and overly romanticized Filipino Resilience. Additional disaster response are not even planned well, hence the lack of mobilization. The president has all the power to do so, with one word. But not only does he keep the people waiting during crisis, he also only does briefing during or after the disasters. This is why people ask, “Nasaan ang Pangulo?” (Where is the President?)

Fanatics defended the president from criticisms, when asking for his presence will always be a valid question, because we all want to see the response to those who need it most, and not some measly comment on how he wanted to swim with the Filipinos but can’t, because of his health. That is not the point. The president doesn’t need to swim in order to reach help to the Filipinos, he just has to tell all of the country’s rescue forces to hurry.

Addressing the Taal Volcano eruption — “I will eat the lahar and pee on the volcano.”

Addressing the Covid virus — “I will spit [on] and punch the coronavirus.”

Addressing the massive flooding and demand for accountability — “I want to swim with you but the problem is, they’re stopping me, because if I die, there is only one president.”

The Filipinos can no longer wait and laugh at measly hyperbole. People are dying.

Thankfully, independent rescue missions and donations were arranged by several individuals and organizations to lend a hand to those in need. One of those who were seen with initiatives is the Office of the Vice President who is in partnership with Bangon Luzon in Project Kaya Natin ‘To (We can do this). So if you’re looking for a trustworthy organization to donate for the victims of the typhoons, this is where you should donate.
