Neither Joel nor Esme keep particularly early nights, though it’s by occupational habit for one and occupational necessity for the other. Midnight is a fleeting moment; quiet, velvety darkness softens the first of its sixty seconds as Esme rolls to comb gentle fingers through Joel’s hair, thumb brushing tenderly over his forehead before her lips touch the spot where a few strands have rooted silver among rich deep brown.

“One.”

He stirs, dark eyes blinking up at her in the few precious seconds it takes for them to adjust to the low light, before a fond smile brings up the sides of Joel’s mouth, dimples warmly illuminated. One hand rises to brush softly against the side of Esme’s face and she leans into the familiar touch, a soft purring hum of contentment thrumming against warm calluses.

“It’s bedtime, love,” he hums, voice burred low and swirled with sleepy purple. “What are you doing?”

“Counting,” Esme answers. Her whisper slides into a soft giggle as Joel pulls her gently in for a kiss and she turns her head so his mouth lands on her cheek while she nuzzles into the side of his face instead. “Don’t make me lose my place! Or I’ll have to start over again…” The delighted, teasing sparkle in her eyes suggests she wouldn’t mind so much.

“Two,” she murmurs, as she turns to kiss the center of Joel’s palm, then each of his fingertips. “Three, four, five, six, seven.”

Esme nuzzles her face into the curve of Joel’s hand again before guiding it to rest on her back, warm through the chiffon of her chemise. “Eight,” she kisses softly into his left eyelid, followed by “Nine” into his right.

Her hands have been massaging his shoulders, thumbs working deep over trapezii to loosen the tension stored up there during the day, but as Esme adds to her counter with a trail of kisses and murmured numbers down Joel’s face, her hands glide up to cup his cheeks, tilting his head slightly to give her better access to every softly shadowed contour of his features.

“Thirty,” Esme whispers, a little teasing giggle curling over her voice as she leans in towards Joel’s lips, then swerves at the last second to kiss very deliberately at the corner of his mouth, then places the next over his dimples.

She pulls back just enough to look adoringly at him for a moment—thirty-three seconds of midnight taken so far, twenty-seven left to tick away—and smile, gold eyes curving into crescents like a summer moon hanging low and reflected in still water.

“Thirty-three.” A careful kiss over Joel’s freshly-shaven chin.

“Thirty-four.” Lips press soft to the cartilage at his throat and curve up sweetly when it bobs in response.

Esme’s smile brightens as she shifts her weight to lean over Joel’s face again, close enough to press their foreheads together. With twenty-three seconds of midnight left to slip between her fingers like unstrung pearls before she threads them between Joel’s, Esme’s lips brush against his. “Thirty-five. Happy birthday, my love.”

The kiss is tender, a celebration in its own quiet, precious trove of three seconds thrice over—not that Esme keeps a particularly faithful count beyond the first three, smiling into the kiss and losing herself in the feeling of something blooming warm and sweet like impossible sunshine between them.

Joel makes a soft sighing sound in the back of his throat when she pulls back, dark eyes bright and impossibly soft as Esme brushes a hand through his hair again. He cradles her face with one hand and tips her into another kiss, plush and deep as the dark night around them.

There’s an edge of mischief glinting over Esme’s reddened lower lip when she grins at Joel and traces a winding path down the column of his throat, touch lightening as her fingertip passes collarbone. “Still a few seconds left of midnight, and so much more of you to celebrate. I want to make sure you start today very happy.”

Today was a friends of yours birthday tomorrow and you loved giving people gifts so it was like Christmas came early for you. You had made these beautiful pink paper roses with “happy birthday” written on the petals since your friend loves flowers you thought it was be a nice thoughtful surprise. Honestly making gifts by hand or getting little thoughtful gifts for people was your specialty, you came from a family that didn’t have the biggest bank account and when you were younger you couldn’t afford to buy your friends “proper” (there is no proper gift in my opinion) presents for birthdays, Christmas etc.

So here you are now at your dining table finishing up the last petal before putting it into a gift bag ready to give it to them tomorrow. As you were you heard the front door open and bill walk into the kitchen. “I’m back love.” He said sounding excited and happy. “Hey.” You shouted back, before you felt a pair of hands over your eyes. “Bill, babe, what are you doing?” You giggled smiling at his little act.

“Nothing, just need you to stand up close your eyes and follow me.” He smiled grabbing your hands gently pulling you up from the dining room table. “Oh no..” you giggled in a teasing way. “Oh shut up and close your eyes.” Bill chuckled softly pulling you towards the kitchen. “Okay okay eyes closed.” You smiled closing your eyes as you felt bill lead you to kitchen, placing you at the kitchen island. “Okay wait there.” He said you could practically hear the excitement in his voice. You heard the sound of something being pulled out of a bag. “Okay okay open!” He says sounding very happy.

You open your eyes looking down at the kitchen island seeing a small bouquet of all your favorite flowers and a big white expensive looking box sat next to it. You were gobsmacked and hesitated. “Go on, open it.” Bill said with the biggest grin on his face as he handed you the box. You opened the box to find a three piece set of jewellery. A beautiful sliver diamond necklace along with a matching ring and bracelet, before you could say anything bill jumped in not being able to contain his excitement. “Do you like it? It’s the same one I saw you looking at the other night.” He smiled very happily. It’s true this was the set you’d been wanting forever but the price always put you off, it was to expensive.. and bill brought it for you.

“I..I..” you didn’t know what to say, you were at a loss for words, all you felt was tears forming in your eyes. Bill saw this and his fave a immediately dropped. “What’s wrong? Do you not like it?” He asked frantically. “..no no I love it.” You said softly tears running down your cheeks. “Then why are you crying my love?” He asked whipping your tears. “Because.. nobody’s done this for me before..” you said a small smile on your face. “Well…” Bill giggles softly. “You better get used to it now that you’re with me.” He grinned wrapping his arms around your waist. You laughed gently smiling up at him, before he kissed you.

Fragile, vulnerable, feminine, suitable for my age (37 years old)

Fragile, vulnerable, and feminine... I believe the best fragrances to evoke fragility and vulnerability would be something sheer and delicate, something close to the skin, something that doesn't shout when you enter a room...but is more intimate and whispers... something as soft as an angels breath, barely there and yet inexplicably present.

The following fragrances come to mind when I think of delicate femininity and of course they are sophisticated too and have a timeless quality so they would suit any age <3

Chance Eau Tendre Chanel

This is the first fragrance I think of when I think of femininity, fragility, and vulnerability. From the bottle to the scent inside, this fragrance is the very definition of delicate. The name of this fragrance, Chance, makes me think of a lingering chance encounter that changes your life forever... also, I adore how it's an Eau Tendre. I consider tenderness to be a very precious yet underrated quality that is often associated with femininity - and this perfume is certainly tender, it is like a soft and tender kiss on your skin. It's one of my fave perfumes ever, actually, I love looking at it sitting on top of my vanity, the bottle is just gorgeous in an understated and delicate way.

Also, on that note of tenderness and it's association with femininity, I can't help but think about the following quote from Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar,

Bright Crystal by Versace

This perfume is light and airy, and yet sweet, a fragrance for angels to wear as they lie on a soft fluffy pink cloud of sweetness!

And the bottle is perfect. I've heard many say that Bright Crystal has a 'youthful essence' and is most suitable for a woman in her twenties ...but I disagree, to me, this fragrance has more of an 'ingenue' essence, which, whilst, yes, is often associated with youthfulness...it is also very much associated with femininity and fragility. Hence, this fragrance would be absolutely perfect for you as it evokes that poetic feminine vulnerability that you are looking for <3

Stella Nude

Roses have long been associated with love, beauty, and femininity. This fragrance has rose as it's dominant note. However, unlike other rose-based scents, this fragrance isn't grandiose or powdery. Notably, it doesn't make loud proclamations of romance as much as it whispers sweet nothings.

It's an intimate and delicate fragrance and for this reason, I believe this fragrance would also be absolutely beautiful on you and would very much suit you as it evokes a a femininity that is fragile, sheer, and delicate rather than one that is bold, extravagant, ornate, and sultry. It's very much a stripped back fragrance and, as such, absolutely embodies vulnerability.

Other fave fragrances that embody delicate femininity and are also timeless and can be worn at any age:

2. Guerlain - My Insolence

3. DKNY - Stories

4. Naughty Alice - Vivienne Westwood

I find that the above fragrances, whilst all undoubtedly feminine, are not extravagantly feminine but enchantingly feminine - both types of femininity are absolutely beautiful. The first type (extravagant femininity) brings to mind Marie Antoinette Rococo Opulence and the second type of femininity (the delicate and enchanting femininity which I believe you are after from your ask) is almost mystical in the sense that it evokes a woodland nymph or lady of the lake - soft and vulnerable, a hidden and almost mythic femininity.

You have to tell us what perfumes you use!! Put us on! What’s wrong with le labo? I like the le labo rose 34 :(

A tough one to answer because I wear multiple perfumes a day and I'm almost always trying out samples, much to my family's displeasure. (I've been called a torture artist for making them smell some of the things I've worn!) But I try to mostly do sampling when I'm at home. Full bottles I own and wear when I'm out and about include but are not limited to:

Andy Tauer L'air du desert marocain - LOVE OF MY LIIIIFE! It smells like nothing else, simply one of the best dry ambers in existence. You must sample this if you like perfume at all.

Tauerville Rose Flash - my favourite rose scent (yes, even more than Portrait of a Lady!) A super jammy rose with a weird, funky citronella kind of base note. Projects like nothing else, I adore it. 

Thierry Mugler Alien - one of the best designer perfumes of all time, one of the best jasmines of all time. I love her. I wear this to the grocery store lol

Guerlain Vetiver Extreme - I didn’t care for the OG Guerlain Vetiver, though it’s considered one of the best in the genre (and I adore vetiver as a note!) but this one I love, it’s super smoky and incense-y. Hard to find in Aus but great value for money.

Comme des Garcons Incense: Avignon - you spray this and a Gregorian chant starts playing. A beautiful, airy, completely unforgiving incense. 

Prada Infusion d'Iris - A papery, dry iris. It uses the dry facets of iris, vetiver, incense, and a slug of iso e super (an aromachemical that smells like cedar/pencil shavings) to create an effect like the smell in a very clean library. One of my safe (for other people!) scents. 

Wik & Co Marveilleux - a lipstick rose/iris from an aussie indie brand. Smells like a vintage style scent that’s been given a modern twist. The closest I get to a decadent floral. 

Lalique Encre Noire/Encre Noire Extreme/Encre Noire Sport - my vetiver babieeeesssss. Encre Noire is one of the best vetivers ever made and probably the best soliflore for this note. Unfortunately, it only lasts about an hour on me so I spray it profusely. Extreme is deeper and a bit more powdery, Sport has some mineral notes in the top, both are also lovely. 

Lush I'm Home/Rentless/What Would Love Do?/Lord of Misrule/Goddess - I love my little lush bottles!. I’m Home is a cosy vanilla/benzoin, Rentless is Christmas spices with a huge slug of patchouli, WWLD is a lavender/citrus, Lord of Misrule is a patch/vanilla/pepper situation, and Goddess is what has to be described as a brutal oud, paired with rose and osmanthus. All lovely, well priced, and more inventive than about 80% of the designer/niche market. 

Serge Lutens Gris Clair - my fancy chemist lavender/hot ironing darling. Glorious.

Rania J Ambre Loup - gorgeous, cosy amber, with a lot of clove in the top notes. Not too powdery.

YSL M7 - one of the first western oud scents. Smells very medicinal, like cherry cough syrup - one of my faves. 

Prada Candy Gloss  - another cherry scent, I’m obsessed with medicinal/clinical cherry notes (I often enjoy almond/heliotrope perfumes because they smell very similar to cherry!). What perfume people call a ‘dumb reach’ - lovely, crowd pleasing, unchallenging. 

Molinard Habanita - powdery but in a good way. A vetiver-vanilla combo that is dominated by heliotrope (cherry-ish) and tobacco for me. Love the bottle.

Goldfield and Banks Wood Infusion - another aussie niche brand. A sticky oud and sandalwood, it projects like crazy. This one is addictive!

Guerlain Mitsouko - the chypre to end all chypres. 

Ariana Grande Cloud - a Baccarat Rouge 540 dupe, the best BR540 dupe, a saffron/medicinal top that blooms into a warm gourmand base. I get compliments from strangers when I wear this one. 

Escentric Molecules Escentric 01 - iso e super (aforementioned pencil shavings aromachemical) with a truly lovely pink pepper top note. 

Gucci Guilty Absolute pour Homme - smells like bandaids. Smells like a muscle rub. The affect is created by a truly dark combination of vetiver, cypress, and patchouli. I adore it. 

Agent Provocateur l’Agent - tuberose and incense, mainly myrrh. Very gothic, dramatic, seductress in silk dressing gown draped over a staircase. 

Dior Homme - A masculine (citrus top, woody base) with an iris (lipstick smelling) heart note. It is heavenly. 

Estee Lauder Youth Dew - my brother once called it, 'the sulfur of the damned'. Smells like Betty Draper mid existensial crisis. A coca coca oriental. 

Tocca Guiletta - this is a breezy light floral that has almost nothing I like listed in the notes, and yet I love it? It lasts forever, i take it on holidays. (Man, remember holidays?)

Tom Ford Black Orchid - Had it for years, love it deeply. A chocolate-cucumber top accord with a decaying floral/incense base. Smells like a dying 1920′s starlet. 

Tom Ford Grey Vetiver - a buttery vetiver accord in the style of Comme des Garcons Man 2. 

Kyse Frollino Lavanda - a huge dose of essential oil-ish lavender on top of a salted butter/sugary base. It’s just gorgeous. 

100bon Amaretto and Framboise/Carvi Jardin et Figue/Davana and Vanille Bourbon - these are all natural scents with surprisingly good longevity. The almond is a little boozy, the fig is very creamy, the davana a bit more fresh. I wear them in summer because they’re not cloying and they don’t give you a headache. 

I have decants of Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady/Musc Ravageur and Heeley Cardinal that I wear pretty often as well. And I have a sample of Ormonde Woman that I'm hoarding because I love it and I want a bottle very badly but it is spennnssssyyy ($230 for 50ml). My wishlist is equally as embarrassing.

As for Le Labo, that’s really just a petty me thing; I don’t like brands that overcharge for their product. Fact is, unless the scent includes really difficult to source (real oud), rare (Mysore sandalwood), or expensive (real orris butter, saffron) ingredients, there’s no reason why the scent should be sold at such a markup. 

(I would probably never buy a full bottle of a Frederic Malle perfume either, though I love many of them and I like the brand a lot more than Le Labo, because they are similarly exorbitantly priced - mostly because of the ingredients.)

A lot of niche brands do markup (Byredo, Creed, ROJA DOVE) because they’re selling the aesthetic, and I don’t jive with that. I like a few Le Labo scents (Thé Noir 29, Vetiver 46, their oud is alright) and i would buy them if they were in the 100-150$ price range. I also like that they have an affordable in house sampling service. I don’t like how they name their perfumes after the most used ingredient, because I think it’s misleading (Santal 33 does not smell like sandalwood, it’s a violet leaf bomb, etc). Rose 31 I do hate though lmao. It smells like sour cumin to me.

I got tagged by my fav @daniwouldnever! Thank you I’m very excited and honoured. I will admit that this was more difficult than expected. Anyway, in no particular order...

1. Charlie Bradbury - Supernatural

Charlie was the first lesbian I ever saw on screen. She was nerdy and brilliant and a redhead and a total fucking badass. I knew I liked her from the moment she started dancing in the elevator, but was completely in love with her by the time she said “I’m the one who saves damsels in distress around here.” I was able to find myself through Charlie, and I will forever be grateful for that. Also she looks like she gives really good hugs, which is always a required factor of being a fave of mine.

2. Sadie Kane- The Kane Chronicles

Egyptian gods I love this girl. I think when the first book came out I was only one or two years younger than her and I idolized her. Her sass and constant teasing of her polar opposite brother were very familiar to me. I desperately wanted to be able to dye streaks in my hair like her and wear ‘punk’ clothes. What I love the most about Sadie though is her heart. She puts up a very tough front but she wears her heart on her shoulder and would do anything for those she cares about. No offence to her author but my headcanon is that she’s definitely a lesbian experiencing some hardcore comphet. For her sake I hope it wasn’t too hard breaking up with her god boyfriend once she figured it out.

3. Anne Shirley - Anne of Green Gables

For those that aren’t aware, I’m named after this one. It’s my middle name, yeah, but with four letters my mother managed to manifest a daughter with pretty much the exact same personality as the tenacious redhead from Green Gables. Honestly, I don’t mind one bit. If I had to choose a character to be kindred spirits with, it’d be Anne. 

4. Draculaura - Monster High

She’s pink! She sleeps in a coffin! Her style is to die for! She was the first Monster High doll I ever owned! She’s pink! She drinks vegan smoothies and cries easily when she’s frustrated! Draculaura is kind and welcoming and has untreated ADHD! I just really love her okay I get excited.

5. General Leia Organa - Star Wars

I mean. It’s Leia Organa why do I have to explain? She’s smarter than her brother and (ex?) husband combined. She’s the prettiest woman in space. While Charlie was the first lesbian I saw, the Princess was my gay awakening. (With help from Padme too)

6. Nile Freeman - The Old Guard

Again. Why do I have to explain. I love everything about her and every second she’s on screen, but my favourite moment comes after her fight with Andy on the plane. She’s been killed, kidnapped, killed again, had her faith called bullshit, gotten into a fight, had bones broken that healed in seconds, just generally had the rug pulled from beneath her feet in every conceivable way and her external freak out lasts what... thirty seconds? Before she allows Andy to pull her up. Nile’s strength and compartmentalization is insane. She knows it’s not time for her to have a full breakdown, so she doesn’t. She comes from warriors indeed. 

7. Elena Alvarez - One Day At A Time

Ah Elena. Similar ages, sexuality, interests, fathers. I just like her. She’s extremely relatable, and I can’t watch certain episodes without bawling. 

8. Marceline the Vampire Queen - Adventure Time 

As we have established I like vampires. Of all shapes and sizes. They tend to come with tragic backstories and Marceline kind of takes the cake in that regard. She’s very sentimental! She’s mischievous and sings! Her girlfriend is literally Bubblegum! 

9. Aurora/Briar Rose - Sleeping Beauty

Okay, hear me out. A lot of people don’t really like Sleeping Beauty, but I’m here to tell you why Aurora is actually one of the best Disney princesses. 1. She doesn’t even have to do much, she just sleeps for a century. I wish I could do that. 2. She has not one, but two beautiful names. 3. Three fairy godmothers. 4. The solution to the blue/pink debacle is purple I just don’t think Flora and Merryweather would listen to me. 5. Have you heard the original ‘Once Upon A Dream’? That song has drugs in it. 6. Maleficent.

10. Poison Ivy - DC Comics

With the third redhead on the list I can admit I have a type. Sue me, I like gingers. And sexy eco-terrorists who date insane clowns. She just wants to protect the environment, I don’t see what the problem is.

Kiss It & Make It Better

Steven stumbles upon a new power that, just like all of the rest, doesn't work quite like his mother's. It has some negative side effects that he's a bit reluctant to explain to the others.

Steven adores Connie.

This is probably obvious in everything he does. What began as a partnership, as a mutual interest in all things magical and fey, has become something so much more. It’s something he’ll always carry with him, forever.

So of course it’s with her that he discovers a new power.

Most of his powers are fairly standard fey stuff. He can summon a shield and disintegrate it at his will. He can summon wings, too; semi-transparent things that are hued an unnatural pink, insectoid and bizarre-looking even to Pearl, who knew his mother best. He can manipulate others, though it is a temporary thing and people are usually aware of the magical interference on their thinking if they’re not already strongly learning that way.

Then there’s this.

Steven presses a joking kiss to the injury on Connie’s finger, so mild that calling it an injury is hyperbole, and insists he’ll make it better. They laugh, both their cheeks blushing at the flirtatious nature of it all. And then they stare at each other in awe as the paper cut on Connie’s finger magically seals itself, the skin suddenly baby-smooth. Connie runs her fingers over it again and again, a “Whoa” murmuring out.

Steven winces at a prickling ache in his own finger. He looks down to see a paper cut there, in what might have been an identical spot to the one on Connie’s.

“I didn’t know you could heal,” Connie whispers.

“I didn’t either,” he confesses with nervous laughter.

Is that paper cut from that, just now? No. It couldn’t be. It’s just a coincidence, though he doesn’t remember how exactly he got the papercut in the first place. That’s fine.

“How?”

Steven shrugs, fingers curling into his palm, and hopes that Connie leaves it at that.

Of course, she doesn’t. Connie has always been inquisitive by nature, and it’s one of Steven’s favorite things about her. There’s nothing wrong with it, period, but it makes something like this… well, more than a little awkward.

“Describe what happened,” Garnet says in that stoic way of hers, and Steven feels his face heating.

“Okay, so!” Connie takes Steven’s hand in hers, a grin spread across her face. “We were just joking around, right? And I’d gotten a paper cut earlier today at school. And I complained about it to him, so he said he’d ‘kiss it and make it better.’ And then he did!”

“I’ve never heard of a fey healing a mortal with a kiss,” Garnet murmurs. “You weren’t using magic?”

“Garnet.” Steven laughs, high and awkward and nerves spiking. “You know I can’t.”

“All fey have access to magic.”

“Clearly that doesn’t mean me.”

“The skills you call ‘powers’ are all different forms of—”

“We’ve had this conversation!” Steven waves his hands, wildly, desperate to direct the topic elsewhere. “It doesn’t matter. It was a one-time thing, and it won’t happen again.”

He’s scared of what might happen if it does.

Garnet nods once, and though no expression forms at her lips or in her eyebrows, he wishes he could see past her visor to know what her eyes were saying. “We could ask Mother.”

Connie gasps, excitement bursting at her seams, but Steven pales. The idea of Sapphire finding out — she would take one look at him and know. He’s never been able to hide anything from her. She would probably ban him from every healing anyone ever again. Or maybe she’d be okay with this.

Or maybe Steven’s freaking out over nothing, because who knows if he got that paper cut from somewhere else that he just forgot about?

“I-I don’t know. Maybe this was just a fluke.”

“We could always test that theory,” Garnet suggests.

“Fine.” Steven knows he’ll regret saying it, but he acquiesces. “Let’s test it!”

He words it as a challenge, praying fervently that Garnet will read his mind and see that they should just drop this subject and leave it alone.

Garnet, however, is not, nor has she ever claimed to be, a mind reader.

“Ooh, this sounds like a fun experiment. And you are due for another sword-fighting lesson, Connie.”

Normally, Steven is ecstatic when Connie’s up for training with Pearl. She’s very much Pearl’s student, as graceful and diligent as her teacher. The brownie has always been willing to share the things she’s learned — not in terms of the skills she knows inherently, as a brownie, but the skills she learned and trained herself in and mastered. The two of them in the arena together are a brilliant, dazzling display.

But today’s lesson seems like it would be less for Connie and more for Steven.

“Don’t, uh. Don’t beat each other up too hard,” Steven says, as Connie follows Pearl to the fairy circle.

Connie laughs. “Oh, I’m gonna kick Pearl’s ass.”

“Profanity, young lady,” Pearl scolds.

It would get a giggle out of Steven if he wasn’t absolutely terrified.

“What are you doing in my room?”

“Go away.”

“This is my room.”

Steven doesn’t move. He stays exactly where he is, curled up behind one of Amethyst’s many piles of miscellaneous paraphernalia. Amethyst sighs, the sound so near a groan that he almost winces, and then he feels the shift of movement and cloth as she plops down next to him. He’s on his butt, knees up, arms wrapped around them and head pressed between, but Amethyst leans over him, almost on top of him. “What’s got you down, bud? What’re you hiding from?”

“Nothing, geez!”

“So you’re telling me that you’re in my room for no reason?”

“What’s the big deal? It’s not a full moon, is it?”

“Stop being obtuse, you dweeb.”

Steven groans. He shifts, pushing Amethyst off of him in order to look at her. “I just… well. Garnet and Pearl are training with Connie because they think it’s going to help me, but I’m pretty sure it won’t. So I’m hiding out in here so I won’t have to face them when they’re done.”

“Just tell them that.”

“It’s not that simple.”

“Sounds like it is when you won’t tell me why it’s complicated.”

“I don’t wanna talk about it.”

Amethyst hums, but she sounds almost as if she’s bored. She isn’t; Steven knows her well enough by now, but as always, it makes his nerves spike. As if he’s burdening her by being here, when the very reason he’s here is because he knows she doesn’t see him like that and she never will. “Well, why don’t you ask Sapphire? Maybe her future vision can help out so you won’t have to say anything.”

Steven considers it. He has a feeling that Sapphire would be straight with him about it, but she would spell everything out, word for word. And he doesn’t know if he wants to hear her wise voice articulating the specifics of this strange new power.

Which is how Steven winds up in front of Ruby.

“What’s goin’ on, Ste-man?” Ruby asks, burning a Poptart in her hand right before she devours it.

“I gotta ask you for some advice.” The words sigh out him, almost like he’s deflating, as he plops into the seat at the counter.

Ruby blinks, stunned. Yeah, Steven isn’t surprised by that. The last time he went to Ruby for advice, she’d made him swear never to come to her again. “That’s Sapphire’s thing, I guess,” she’d said with a blush and a nervous laugh. But Ruby had lived for eons, just like Sapphire, and just because she didn’t have the korrigan’s future vision didn’t mean her insight wasn’t also valuable.

Especially when it came to said korrigan.

“So… how do you recommend approaching Sapphire when I don’t want to actually talk about something, I kinda just want her to know it?”

Ruby’s expression remains exactly the same. Stunned, bewildered. Steven’s wondering if he’s made some sort of mistake when Ruby says, “Sapphire… can’t read minds, Steven. You know that. Sure, she can see a bunch of different futures, but that doesn’t mean she’s going to know what’s bothering you right away.”

Okay, that makes sense, but that doesn’t mean it’s what he wants to hear.

“What’s up with my fave little man?” Ruby asks, hopping up onto the counter and swinging her legs over the side.

And, honestly? No one else is allowed to be so diminutive with him. If only because Ruby knows exactly what it’s like to be called that kind of thing, and she doesn’t get the privilege of growing up like he does. (Then again, she can choose whatever human form she wants.)

“Uh, so…” He knows Ruby won’t let this leak. Of all of them, she’s probably the most tight-lipped... except in her anger, of course. “Connie and I discovered a new power of mine, but… I don’t really know how to tell her that I think it’s got some pretty negative side effects? But she’s already working on it, so… I just wanna know if I should pretend it doesn’t work, or that it was a fluke, or whatever.”

“Huh.”

Ruby doesn’t say anything for a moment, tapping at her chin with a furrow to her brow. “Mind if I ask what kind of side effects?”

“Um…” Steven bites his lip.

Ruby sighs. “Well, if you’re not gonna talk about it with me, I don’t know how you’re expecting to talk about it with Sapphy. And Steven, we’re all gonna know sooner or later. Might as well rip off the band-aid now, y’know?”

She was right. Of course she was right.

“I guess I have the power to heal people,” he begins.

“Oh, like Rose’s tears!”

Ruby’s starry eyes make Steven laugh, tone high and awkward. “Uh, kind of. But through kisses. And it’s not just healing. I don’t know how Mom did it, but for me, it seems like… I can take on whatever injury they’ve got.”

“Oh.” Ruby’s expression changes immediately from one of excitement to one of concern. “You sure?”

Steven shrugs. “It’s only happened once and it was over a paper cut, but… yeah, pretty sure. Usually once a new power hits, I can kind of tell.” Emphasis on the kind of; they all remember when his wings manifested. That had been…

Ruby nods slowly, gears turning in her brain. “Well, we should probably tell people about this, right? You don’t wanna end up in a situation where you feel like you have to use it, and everyone’s expecting you to, only for that to hit the fan right then.”

“I-I guess?”

Ruby slaps his shoulder, and he yelps. Her touch burns his skin through his jacket. “C’mon, little man!”

“I’m coming, I’m coming.”

“This assumption you’ve made is based on one single event.”

Steven nods slowly, though the lump in his throat is heavy. “Um… yeah. I would really rather not test it, if that’s what you’re about to suggest.”

Sapphire considers this. She is at about Ruby’s height — which is to say, she comes up this waist and no higher. He used to think that she used to look down on him despite this, and in hindsight, that’s pretty hilarious, because Sapphire doesn’t conceive of others that way. Korrigans are typically incredibly beautiful creatures, and though Steven would say that Sapphire fits the bill, many fey would not; for Sapphire, somehow, came into being with only one eye. Sapphire has been treated horribly enough by plenty of fey for that sole thing — Steven’s even heard someone claim she has “more in common with the monsters than with fey” — and while that almost made him go off, she insisted it was fine.

She even jokes that her future vision requires two, and her third is for sight. Steven isn’t sure what to make of any that, but he does know that she’s probably the least likely to look down on anyone else.

“We won’t do anything that cannot be swiftly remedied.” Despite the assurance, Steven finds himself hesitating. Sapphire gestures for him to follow her, so he does. “You know, Steven, that your mother’s healing abilities worked differently.”

He swallows. “Yeah.” Hers were perfect, infallible in every way. Her tears would heal injuries with absolutely no casualties. Supposedly she could heal fey on the brink of death — something quite difficult for fey to reach in the first place — and they would resurrect, good as new and fatigue restored.

Steven’s powers are almost always different from Rose’s somehow. Never quite as unique, never quite as special.

“What you may not have known is that they affected mortals differently than they did fey.”

He blinks. He looks up, trying to catch Sapphire’s gaze, but she’s too many steps ahead. He recognizes this path well; she is leading him to the fairy circle. When he was young, they built the house around it. Apparently some of his mother’s magic was able to make it so that this particular circle could only be accessed by those with the proper credentials, though Steven hasn’t the foggiest idea about how any of that works.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that this circle is not composed of typical mushrooms, but of eternal fairy roses. Her namesake.

“Can you, um… elaborate?”

As they come to the circle, she extends her hand to him. He takes it, and together they step into the circle. A moment later their house is gone, their surroundings morphing into strange and new shapes until they settle on a familiar scene:

His mother’s fountain. Its water seem higher than ever as they exist the fairy circle, the statue of her higher still.

“Your mother’s powers were regenerative with injured fey; their heart would cease to beat, and your mother’s tears would inspire it to continue on, as if it’d never stopped. Broken bone would mend, lost limbs would regrow. But with mortals, it was very different. Their limbs would remain lost, her magic only causing the skin to heal over exposed bone. Their stopped hearts, when awoken, would be marching to an entirely new rhythm.”

Unease settles in his stomach.

“I’m curious to see if your power behaves the same on mortals and fey, or if it too finds different purpose in our differences.”

Steven stops.

They’ve come to the edge of the fountain. Sapphire smiles, and with a burst of magical energy, a dagger appears in her hand.

“N-no, Sapphire—”

“Easy, now.” Sapphire presses the dagger into the tip of her index finger. Steven watches, horrified, as her blood pools there, before slowly dripping to the stone floor in red speckles.

His stomach lurches again. He feels bile rise and he pushes it down, down, down. It’s just blood. There’s nothing to be concerned about. It’s just blood. And he can fix this.

The dagger disappears and Sapphire beckons him closer with her uninjured hand. Obediently, he comes to her side, but when she extends the injury to him to heal, he freezes. He stares at the blood, still dripping ever so slowly to the floor below.

 What, you can’t handle a little blood, Steven Universe?

“Let’s… just use Mom’s fountain. Okay?”

Sapphire pauses. Something odd crosses her face and Steven squeezes his eyes shut, begging her to do literally anything else but push her injury in front of him and insist.

“Okay.” His eyes fly open to see that Sapphire has turned from him, already dipping her finger into the pond; he nearly misses the shimmer from the water, and when she pulls her hand away, the injury is there no longer.

“I-I’m sorry.”

“I should have asked if this was something you were comfortable with before I insisted. Forgive me.”

Why does he feel like he’s just failed her?

He’s lying face down in his bed, curled up under the covers, when he hears a knock at his door. He shoots upright, untangling himself from the blankets as quickly as he can and ends up on the floor with a thud. “U-uh, come in!”

He’s just barely on his feet when Connie comes in, bruises all over her and a look of concern on her face. “Steven?”

 Oh.

In his haste to throw a pity party, he totally forgot that he’d forgotten he’d agreed to try to heal Connie’s training injuries. He scans her for a moment; she’s got a particularly nasty bruise on her elbow, but otherwise her injuries don’t seem too bad. She’s probably sore — will he inherit that, as well, or will he be spared it? If it’s just this one time, then this is probably fine, right?

“Yeah. C’mon in.”

She shuts the door behind her and comes in. He sits on the bed and she moves to sit beside him. He’s already taking her hand and bending down to kiss it when she puts a hand on his shoulder and pushes him back. He looks up, startled to see that concern still there.

“Steven… Ruby and Sapphire told us about it.”

“Us?” he squeaks.

“Pearl and I. I’m assuming Amethyst and Garnet probably know, too.”

His face burns. “Oh.” Slowly, Steven lets her hand drop, and he pulls his hand away from hers, sitting it back in his lap. He stares at them, fidgeting them while the silence grows. Connie seems to be expecting something from him, but he doesn’t know what it is.

“Steven…” Connie sighs. “Next time, please just tell me. Please just tell me something like this would hurt you, okay? We can always just go to your mother’s fountain. Or not! I don’t even go there half the time after training because these aches and bruises are earned, you know? So I don’t even need healing!”

He nods. “Yeah. Okay.”

Another beat passes. Connie gives a soft, gentle sigh, and she curls her hands around his face, pulling his eyes up to meet hers. “Steven. If healing someone is going to put you at risk, then we’ll just bandage things up and let them heal the old-fashioned way. Okay? Let me care for you.”

Steven presses his forehead against hers and offers her a slow, hesitant smile. “Okay.”

She presses a kiss to his nose, and for a moment, everything is better.

The whole point of valentines day is to yell about how much you love someone (at least that’s how I see it) so that’s exactly what I intend to do! I haven’t had this blog for very long but already I’ve met so many incredible people who have all made this place a home for me! I spend a lot of (too much) time on the internet so honestly?? Favorite color: blue for sure, green second. I probably wear blue and black the most, although I love a good red dress even if I’m kinda pale for red lol 

Last song I listened to: Pink Moon by Nick Drake. Beautiful song that my parents would always play growing up and the melancholic vibes really just hit different

Favorite musicians: Now this is a tough question with a loong answer. When I say I listen to a bit of everything I mean it. Put my playlist on shuffle and it’ll go from a 50s love song to screaming death metal to classic rock to jazz to grunge to rap to indie pop to a classical theme score, the list goes on. My fave song tho is La Vie en Rose by Edith Piaf. Lately tho I’ve been really into 90s grunge; think Nirvana, Hole, Babes in Toyland, Soundgarden, Toadies, Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone, Veruca Salt, L7, Skin Yard. Oh and the Smiths and Skinny Girl Diet. I could go on forever lol. My Spotify playlist is a never ending 26 hour mess.

Last film I watched: Spirited Away. Totally weird and creepy and confusing but beautiful and I love it. Making use of that HBO Max free trial for some Studio Ghibli binge watching B)

Last show I watched: Inuyasha. I’ve been feeling pretty nostalgic lately so I’ve been rewatching some childhood faves. (Like ATLA lol) As a kid I preferred Sailor Moon, it was my first ever anime but didn’t get as into Inuyasha as my friends did. Watching it now tho it’s enjoyable. Too bad it goes on for so long but doesn’t get a proper ending. 

Favorite characters: Too many to think of? Zuko, Iroh, Azula and Sokka from ATLA. (and Suki and Mai.. I love them all) Hermione Granger from Harry Potter. Gilbert Blythe from Anne of Green Gables. Lindsay Weir from Freaks and Geeks. Hyde and Jackie from That 70s Show. Akito from Kodocha (the manga, we don’t talk about the anime adaption) Sailor Mars from Sailor Moon.. the list goes on

Sweet, spicy or savory: sweet for sure. A little square of chocolate to get you through the day is always essential

Sparkling water, tea, or coffee: Tea. I can’t standdd anything carbonated or fizzy, for some reason they always burn my throat and nose more than they should and I’ve never been able to drink them. Tea tho? Great. Outstanding. A classic. Especially iced tea, in the summer istg I probably drink it almost as much as water.

Pets: I have two cats and a dog who I love. They’re my family pets and I’ve had our cats for as long as I can remember. They’re brothers and orange tabbies and my dog is a dachshund who is very much blind.

3. what random objects do you use to bookmark your books? - library receipts, post-its, junk mail, pencils

5. are you self-conscious of your smile? - i think it’s one of the few things i’m not self-conscious about, actually. i like my smile.

8. what artistic medium do you use to express your feelings? - writing, often poetry but sometimes prose. i like creating playlists, too, and singing.

9. do you like singing/humming to yourself? - yeah, i sing to myself all the time. whatever song i have stuck in my head at the moment.

10. do you sleep on your back, side, or stomach? - side, but very occasionally my stomach.

32. tell us a story of something that happened to you after 3AM when you were with friends. - i went to a waffle house at 5am with a friend and some friends of hers i’d just met on her birthday. we were all really drunk, the food took forever, and it tasted awful, but we were happy and laughing.

48. what was your biggest fear as a kid? is it the same today? - my dad told me a story once, about when i was a kid. he said that he and i were walking together near the lake in the neighborhood across from mine. i was holding his hand, and i said to him that this was the happiest time in my life because i wouldn't be the same when i grew out of being a child. i think i have the same fear now--that i'll never be that happy again.

- i like records but i only have one. it's an album by ccr. i really like them

- my dog shiver is turning into a little old man, but he still acts like a puppy. he likes attention and whines to communicate. he'll greet you at the door and put his front paws on your thighs to say hi. follows you all around the house. loves to cuddle.

- my pigeon spirit is young and vocal. she coos for attention. when i go to sleep, she grunts every time i move to ask where i am and if i'm okay. i take showers with her and sit on the tile; she puffs up right into my side and sticks her wings out for me to splash water on her. she likes to be close to me to get neck scritches and push her head into my neck and preen every bit of me she can.

- it's white wallpaper with pink roses along the top and ribbons of pink and green striped vertically. my mom chose it before i was born.

- they sort of remind me of dark water where everything is reflected back in it--not just the sky but the trees and people walking--and they make you want to look closer because you know there's something in there, it's not just a reflection, like flat glass. but it's hidden until you dio your hand in the pictures broken.

hi!! no not annoying at all.....sorry for the late reply! i am happy to give u a list of some of my faves..i may add more onto this in the future but ill give u a brief version,.,,bc im currently struggling to remember the names of a lot of my faves!

probably my fave fic ever, and in all honesty im not entirely sure why. that’s not an insult at thebaddestwolf, who writes several sentences that brings me to tears throughout the course of this story, but just because it is out of my usual realm of things i read? its a post doomsday fic, where ten/rose are communicating via psychic paper.... needless to say its angsty but has an ending that is not only happy, but satisfying.

oh god..this one hurts me in a way that is so deep... and it is done very well. there are hints (I say hints, but it is honestly pretty obvious) of nine/rose throughout, and basically the premise is in one of nine/roses adventures at a foreign bar  rose stumbles upon a ten (who was in search of her)  right after the titanic incident.. so good... kind of a sad ending.

for starters, i already love abbey, so all of her stuff is worth a read.

but as far as content goes, we have this really great 10/rose dynamic in which we have an easily embarrassed/trying to seem chill totallynotchill rose against a cheeky- if a bit blunt ten and it is wonderful. sexy, gorgeous writing, mastery of the characters being written- their voices are very clear.

oh god,,,,, where do i even start... okay im gonna be honest and say i havent finished this one...not because of how long it is or because i wasnt interested by ANY MEANS but because the rose was so raw that it hurt to read. from my understanding, the ending is happy, and it is probably some of the best writing ive read for doc who.... you will not be disappointed. it is so sososo crazy good. the premise is there are still some flaws in pete’s world, and tentoo/rose have to learn how to fix that issue..while still trying to relearn their dynamic. it is PAINFUL... but gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous.
