Best books of 2023, honourable mention #2: The Hands of the Emperor- Victoria Goddard

These are books that I read in 2023, not necessarily ones that were published in 2023. These are the books that I enjoyed the most, the list is entirely subjective. Honourable mentions didn't quite make the top 10 and are in no particular order.

This was a really interesting take on fantasy as a whole. I wouldn't call it cozy fantasy as such, but instead it felt more like the plot of a contemporary novel in a high fantasy world, and honestly I kind of loved it. I definitely wouldn't have enjoyed it if it hadn't been done so well-- over 800 pages with little to no action is generally a hard sell for me-- but honestly I just enjoyed every moment of it. It had a lot of themes that I've really been loving recently: humanising idolised characters, people generally taking a break, and (obviously) found family. Stressed secretary gets his boss who is also his friend and is also the divine emperor of the world to go on holiday honestly should sell itself but if you need any more convincing it's got cultural identity crises, a protagonist who fails to realise he's a protagonist and a whole lot of friendship and found family and a little bit of actual family.

hello friend mutual of mine you've open a fuckin wormhome about that campaign i mentioned in a rb that you said you were interesdted in

okay so, it's like. undetermined when it'll start but im suspecting august-october time we'll finish withe current campaign and move onto it

my group runs it on discord and it is kinda lightly splatoon flavoured to a degree but this campaign is mostly its own distinct thing so it'll be fineeee

we use the Call of Cthulu ruleset with soime heavy homebrew rather than DnD instead - using 1d100's where the lower the number the better xd

but yeah. it's a backrooms/scp style campaign where the cast is hired by two siblings to get back their quasi third sibling who's vanished with a trace leading to a mysterious delapidated house above a laboratory that reaches so deep into the earth the signals ~mysteriously distort beyond reasonable measures~. i've got planned some analogue horror,some body horror, some senses of realityw arping, the occasional goofy area with underlying unease, and probably (in my own opinion) the most tragic yuri couple around planned out in it

and this is without going into greater detail about characters,extra worldbuilding and the like but oughoughough yes hello hi
