Day One Hundred Thirty-Four

So. This morning, Mr. X resigned. I had a feeling that was going to happen- though I didn't necessarily think it would happen today- but he came and talked to me, explained that he's dealing with a lot outside of work (note: I already knew this, but I tend to know things even when I'm not supposed to). I told him taking care of himself and his family comes first. It sucks, but... there it is.

The Principal is going to have Mr. O, the teacher we were already planning to hire to replace Mr. X, to finish out this year is a long-term sub. He came to tell me that part when I was mid-teach, and here's the funny thing: nearly every time he does that- interrupts class for something- it's when I'm saying something super dramatic, and today was no exception.

It's the start of a new unit, so I was doing my usual vocab lesson, and the word I'd just defined was "radicalization" (note: this unit is about current world issues). I was explaining online radicalization, and getting my students to react in shock and disbelief when I explained how different extremist groups use social media, when he stepped through the door.

I paused mid-sentence (much suspense) and stepped out to speak. And, of course, I picked up right where I'd left off when I stepped back in. I don't miss beats!

My students were skeptical- in all three sections- that I could define all twenty vocab terms in the time I had to do it in class, but I did it while elaborating and using the terms in context. Because I'm a wizard. I did some seriously exaggerated gloating afterwards, too, and received equally exaggerated applause and/or groaning from my students. We speak about serious things in my classroom, but we also have fun.

At the end of the day, I went down to the staff room to box up books for donation (Mr. N pulled some pirate moves during his prep time and got more boxes for us). Then I headed out to track practice- on our track today!- which was delightful. I taught rookie sprinters how to use starting blocks, and then they and the veterans did block practice. They also did some 300m repeats with The Head Coach afterwards.

It's probably going to snow tomorrow, but it was great to be out in the sunshine today!

The fact that its been a year since i first watched TOH feels fake-

idk i vividly remember sitting in my dorm room procrastinating all my assignments because i was just so invested i couldn't imagine doing anything else until i finished this show

and i got so invested so quickly which hasn't happened with a show in so long but i found it so easy to get invested in the characters, the relationships and the story

I have a lot i could say but alas my brain refuses to let it happen

I wish i watched it sooner but I'm glad that i watched it at all, Lumity is incredibly important to me and I'm so happy a ship like them exists in media today, they are just so sweet and well written, I love all the sweet platonic and found family relationships we get.

This show deserved better, I have so much respect for the crew for making season three as engaging and as good as it is especially considering they had to keep it to 2 and a half hours, but it deserved to have a full season.

Anyway TOH is a good show and I’ve met the coolest people bc of it, this show deserves the hype it gets, it’s a beautiful show and I’m thankful to Dana and the crew for creating it <3

i've decided to mod cyberpunk *more* and get some clothes and cyberware options. so of course i've decided to do it two days after a big patch. and of course the list of additional mods to make it all work is huge. and of course i've installed a bunch of them only to get to the last one and see that that one *specifically* isn't updated and is causing crashes now. so i can't play cyberpunk at all until this one mod updates.

Day One Hundred Eleven

Today was one of those days that just worked. My lesson plan was pretty simple: reading books for twenty minutes, time to share current events write-ups, and then a little cause and effect assignment. Students had to use the information in the articles they read yesterday to explain the points in history leading up to the main conflict in the books they're reading.

It was perfect, timing-wise, and you all know I love that. But it also really showed me students' understanding of the history in question. Plus, a lot of them- more than usual- were eager to share what they'd written when I asked for volunteers.

Let me tell you about the best thing, though. I've got a special needs student who's been dealt a rough hand in life, and school's been a massive struggle, so I've been trying (and everyone has been trying) to figure out how to help him. I had a breakthrough recently because he told me multiple choice questions are a strength for him, so I started modifying some of my assignments to be multiple choice rather than open response. He started completing work, and seeing his grade go up, and that's encouraged him to engage more in class. Now, today's assignment? Couldn't really make that multiple choice, so I wasn't sure how it would go. But all he did was ask if he could type rather than handwrite (yes), and then he took off on it with no need for assistance from me.

I ran and told his case manager, Mr. P, as soon as school was done: this student's completing his work, he's reading during SSR, he's finally having some success. Mr. P was happy to hear it and jokingly asked me why I didn't work in special education instead of regular education. I said I'm not always good at figuring out what to do, but that I did get really good training in college regarding special ed. law, making modifications, differentiating instruction, etc... It's definitely been helpful throughout my career to have had that.

Another awesome thing today- totally different- was having the bulk of my APGOV students come in during flex time to do some review and keep the course knowledge in their heads for the exam in May. We started by checking out some of the resources on AP Classroom (actually, we started by talking about what's happened with the government since the first semester ended) and then played a round of Kahoot so they could check how much they remember. That was a ton of fun.

And now it's the weekend! Woohoo!
