Almost without fail, when I mention anything having to do with my eating habits, someone feels the need to justify why they don't eat well. Let's just clear a couple things up:
1. I don't care if you eat well
2. I don't care if you don't eat well
3. I don't want to hear your reasons
Okay. Now that we have that out of the way, and have established that you are free to do as you choose with your fork and its relation to your mouth, let's proceed.
People usually tell me that they would eat right if it weren't so difficult. Get real, people. Let's all say it together. "MSG is addictive and I am a user" I get it. It's delicious. It's in everything that can be on a shelf for 5 years without going bad. It is eaten by everyone else, so Why Not You? But at least keep the blame with your addiction, and not the difficulty of eating something that actually has nutritional value.
"Paleo" is for "paleolithic". Duh. Which means that a caveman could do it. If someone seriously looks at me in the face and tells me that they cannot do something that a caveman could then.. I have nothing else to say, so Good Day Sir.
I get being lazy. While your domestic cavewoman might not have fancy paleo meals because she lacked the ease of a neighborhood grocer and, yanno, an oven and stuff, the Latter Day Paleolithic Eater might dumb it down for many reasons - and there is no shame in having laziness be one of them. Shit, it's among the top of mine.
My day consists mostly of starting with a green smoothie and then picking at small things like nuts or fruit throughout the day. When I need something more substantial I throw in an avocado. A hard boiled egg, if I want to live on the wild side. By wild, I obviously mean "actually use a stove".
But being paleo does not necessitate being fancy, domestic or even remotely capable of creating culinary masterpieces. Whether its a lack of knowledge, a lack of time or a lack of desire, "difficult" is not something that this diet is by nature.
I will say, though, that when I choose to actually put in the time and effort, the spreads I have created since beginning my New and Enlightened Eating have been surprisingly delicious, and shockingly well received by My Small Humans. They are meat lovers, so it hasn't been a tough adjustment. They freak out about not getting pasta and mashed potatoes as much as they would prefer, but I smack 'em a few times and they quiet right down.
It can be expensive to do the fancy stuff, though. Because I am tightening up right now, I haven't been doing the sort of grocery shopping would need to do in order to make beautiful Paleo meals. So, though I may occasionally feel a little suffocated by the mundanity - as long as I have meat and veggies on hand, I don't struggle to keep us fed and on course.
Last night: BBQd chicken breasts, bought from Costco in the individual packages and kept in my freezer. I gave them broccoli that was about to go bad in my fridge because I forgot it was there, and I warmed up some rice I'd made for them about five days ago. I had a sweet potato with mine, but gave them week old fridge rice because they are stupid and don't like the sweet potatoes. Come ON. Potato? Good. Sweetness? Very good. Where is the problem, here?
Tonight: I considered being domestic and creative, but decided against it. I would have, except that I didn't want to. So I pulled out a couple of the individually wrapped salmon fillets (bought from Costco - again - in the freezer section), threw them on a broiler pan, shook on some fish seasoning, cut up the last lemon in my fridge and let it sit atop the sweet little fishies as they broiled for 10 minutes. Since they have been eating pistachios all afternoon, I don't feel obligated to feed them a side, but I'll offer salad to my little man. The kid loves his romaine and ranch.
So the point is that I am making it work. It doesn't need to be complicated, and it doesn't even need to be expensive. I'm broke and my cupboards aren't chalk full, but I have enough of the basics that we stay healthy and full.
And healthy.
Did I mention healthy?
I. Love. My. Paleo. Life.
