Love
Chat Noir brings a soundtrack to a fight. Hawkmoth never stood a chance.
AO3
It was over.
They had lost.
Slowly, arms trembling with the effort, Ladybug tried to push herself up from the ground once more before giving up and collapsing in a heap once more. Frustrated tears slipped from her eyes, mingling with the blood that stained her cheeks, the saltwater stinging her wounds.
Through the ringing in her ears, she heard Hawkmoth soliloquizing about his triumph, swinging his stupid cane around and narrowly avoiding her head. Wasn’t it enough that he had won? That he stood over her, undefeated and was about to take away everything that she held dear? Now she had to hear him gloat about it too?
At least Chat wasn’t around to hear it, she thought humorlessly, and then immediately regretted it. Ladybug hadn’t allowed herself to think about it after it happened, too focused on the fight, pushing herself harder, faster against Hawkmoth, not even allowing the thought that Chat was dead to cross her mind.
She would win, and she would cast the cure, and he would spring to his feet, making a stupid pun for her to roll her eyes at, and everything would be alright.
But now…the image of his crumpled body filled her mind, his slack limbs, expression frozen in surprise. Hawkmoth had only laughed as she screamed, darting out of the way of her rage, leading her on a merry chase and now…
…now.
It was over.
She hadn’t been able to save him. Grief and guilt warred inside her, consuming her whole and Ladybug bowed her head, awaiting Hawkmoths final blow. He wouldn’t spare her, she knew. At least…at least she would see Chat again soon.
Ladybug flinched before closing her eyes in resignation as Hawkmoth's hand grasped her face, fingers reaching for her earring. In that moment, her heart was thundering in her chest, the blood rushing in her ears so loudly it was as though she could feel the force of it making the ground beneath her shake.
“What the–” Hawkmoth loosened his grip on her ear and Ladybug opened her eyes to see him gaping at something behind her.
Something that was getting louder and louder, before a booming voice rang out:
Duniya mein kitni hai nafratein
Phir bhi dilon mein chahate
Mar bhi jaye, pyar wale
Was that a…was that a song? Ladybug could hardly believe what she was hearing. Ignoring the pain it caused, she twisted to look behind her, eyes widening at the sight of…
Of Chat Noir, alive. A disbelieving, almost hysterical laugh escaped from her mouth, relief and joy and love blooming in her chest, filling up her throat and leaving her speechless at the sight.
As she watched, dumbfounded, he set down a loudspeaker before turning to face them. She saw no signs of injury apart from a slight limp as he advanced towards them, his expression grim. The music continued to blare out loudly behind him, and Chat spared her a quick, reassuring glance, but any levity in his eyes disappeared when he properly saw the state that she was in, his mouth tightening into a hard line.
Squaring his shoulders, Chat stood above her in a silent face off with Hawkmoth, who seemed just as dumbfounded as her.
Mit bhi jaye, yaar wale
Zinda rehti hain unki mohabbatein
Faster than Ladybug could blink, Chat moved, whizzing his baton around and slamming it into Hawkmoth's stomach.
“ OOF!” He bent over double from the force, but before he could recover, Chat hit him, again, and again, and again, until Ladybug realised with incredulity that he was…
He was timing his hits to the beat of the song, raining down his blows as the music echoed loudly in the street around them.
Finally, Ladybug found her voice. “Have you been practising this?”
“I might have done,” Chat shrugged, shooting a grin at her over his shoulder. “Once or twice.”
“I–”
“That’s okay, you can thank me later.”
How did he do it, Ladybug wondered. He was alive, and she was so absurdly glad that it almost hurt, but already she wanted to throttle him, to wipe the insufferable smirk from his face, to… kiss him her mind supplied helpfully and she quashed the thought down quickly. Thankfully she could pretend she was simply flushed from fighting as Chat offered his hand and pulled her to her feet a little too hard, sending her crashing into his chest.
Ladybug's cheeks flamed. Pulling back slightly, she avoided his knowing gaze and swallowed roughly. “Um–we should…” she paused, losing her train of thought as the instrumental part of Chat’s song was replaced by a woman’s singing. Shaking her head, she carried on “we should uh, do something about hawkmoth,” gesturing to the man lying unconscious in a heap at their feet. “Before he wakes up, I mean.”
“Of course.” Chat agreed with false seriousness before grinning. “But there’s something more important I have to ask you first.”
“There…there is?” Ladybug’s mouth went dry, her heartbeat fluttering in her chest. Chat looked at her warmly, an emotion she couldn’t– wouldn’t– name filling his eyes and she struggled to squash the hope blooming within. “What is it?”
“Do you want to know what this song is saying?”
Ladybug blinked. Of all the things he might have said, this had not been what she expected. Disappointment washed over and she struggled to school her expression, blinking rapidly. “What? No!”
Belatedly, she realised that she was still holding onto his hand, and ripped it from his grasp, turning away. Stupid boy, she thought angrily, with his stupid questions, and her stupid heart, jumping to stupid conclusions.
Although she had been curious… “okay fine,” she threw her arms up in exasperation. “What does it mean?”
“It means, ” Chat took a step forward until she could feel his chest against her back. Breath hitching in her throat, Ladybug, struggled to stay still, her whole body thrumming with electricity as he tucked her hair behind her ear. Grabbing her by the hand, he entwined their fingers and spun her around to face him so quickly she almost stumbled.
This close, she could see the way his eyes glittered with mirth and wondered distantly what he saw in her own eyes as he leaned forward. Whatever it was, he didn’t see it for long as her eyes fluttered shut at his proximity.
“It means,” Chat whispered, his breath ghosting against her skin deliciously, sending a shiver down her back. She could hear the smile in his voice and abruptly, Ladybug knew without a shadow of a doubt that the next words out of his mouth would be important. That they would change her life, in one way or another.
“Their love stays alive.”
Ladybug’s eyes flew open.
Love.
“Love?” she breathed, hardly daring to raise her voice above a murmur. She must have misheard, must have begun to daydream again because–
“Love.” Chat echoed her. His mouth ticked up in a smirk. “You heard me.”
“Does that mean…?”
“Yes." Cupping her face gently, Chat stroked her cheek as she leaned into the touch. Pecking her softly on the lips, he laughed, and the sound sent her heart soaring. “I’ll give you a proper confession, one befitting my Lady later, but first…” he trailed off, looking down pointedly. Following his gaze, Ladybug stifled a gasp at the sight of Hawkmoth, awake now and glaring venomously up at them through his uninjured eye.
“I think we’d better deal with him first, don’t you?”
