National Nutrition Month
Tumblr media
March is National Nutrition Month; a month dedicated to education around the importance of good nutrition and exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle. Every year, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) chooses a theme to focus on; this year’s theme is to “Celebrate A World of Flavor.” I love that this year’s theme is focused on inclusivity, and the fact that there is no one set model of “health” for all people. I want to focus on the importance of finding ways to respect bodies for what they need in ways that are manageable for people’s lifestyles, cultures, and differences. Here are a few tips to focus on “Celebrating a World of Flavor” and finding your “healthy” this month and the rest of the year:
1. Focus on a Variety of Foods
It’s important to nourish your body in ways that make you feel physically, mentally, and emotionally well. This means eating a large variety of foods from all the food groups- grains, proteins, fruits, vegetables, and dairy. Eating ONLY foods that you might label as “healthy” can quickly become unhealthy when ignoring foods you enjoy. I always encourage people to normalize that all foods (yes- cookies, ice cream, ~tasty foods~) can fit in a healthy diet as long as we practice moderation and variety. I recognize that in this day and age it can be difficult to find balance with our busy schedules. Therefore, it can be helpful and fun to plan a weekly menu in advance with your family members to ensure adequate variety. This way, you can try foods from new cuisines and cultures at least a few times per month and explore your taste preferences.
2. Explore Your Cultural Identity
"Celebrating the cultural heritage, traditions and recipes from all people is a tasty way to nourish ourselves, learn about one another and find appreciation in our diversity" says Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Libby Mills, a spokesperson for the AND. Ask your loved ones about family traditions and enjoy bonding over these. It can be fun and exciting to recreate old family recipes together, and keep these traditions alive from generation to generation. I encourage you to also create new traditions around food together with your loved ones.
3. Find Joy in Food
Food is such an important part of our daily lives; it is so crucial to our mental and physical health to enjoy the foods that we fuel our bodies with. If we ignore our cravings, our bodies and minds will continue to ruminate and think about these foods until the craving is satisfied. Sometimes, if we hold off for too long, it can lead to disordered behaviors and negative feelings around certain foods. Food is meant to be social, nourishing, emotional, and fun. I want to stress the importance of allowing yourself to eat the foods that you enjoy, in moderation! All foods can be included as part of a healthy diet when eating in balance and variety. Check out your local grocery stores for cooking inspiration and try having some fun in the kitchen! Cooking and trying new recipes/cuisines together can be a great way to bond with your family members, or even practice self care for you!
4. Move Your Body in Ways You Feel Good
We have all been taught that exercise is an important part of a long and healthful life. But most people don’t recognize the harms and physical damage of compulsive and unenjoyed activity. When we don’t fuel our bodies appropriately or are forced to participate in activity, the thought of exercise becomes dreadful, unappealing, and harmful to our mental and physical health. These patterns do not set us up for lifelong, positive relationships with exercise and our bodies. This month, I challenge you to find an activity that makes you feel happy, energized, and fulfilled. Light activities such as walking the dog, stretching, throwing a baseball, etc. are all ways to get active (as long as you are appropriately nourished to do so). Support local business by checking out yoga studios, climbing gyms, swimming classes, ice skating rinks, etc. Make sure you are enjoying yourself and honor your body when it does not feel up to exercise!
5. Meet With a Registered Dietitian
The world can be an intimidating and confusing place in regards to nutrition and finding what’s “healthy” for you. Unfortunately, the media is full of products which are meant to sell and fail in the long run; just so after you’re feeling down, you’re back to buy it again. Dietitians can help with deciphering these unclear messages and help find ways to respect your individualized cultural and medical needs in the world of nutrition. Please feel free to reach out to schedule sessions with a dietitian to help reach your long term goals and lead a healthy lifestyle that’s best fit for you.

Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week #7
Feb 23-March 1 2024
The White House announced $1.7 Billion in new commitments from local governments, health care systems, charities, business and non-profits as part of the White House Challenge to End Hunger and Build Healthy Communities. The Challenge was launched with 8 billion dollars in 2022 with the goal of ending hunger in America by 2030. The Challenge also seeks to drastically reduce diet-related diseases (like type 2 diabetes). As part of the new commitments 16 city pledged to make plans to end hunger by 2030, the largest insurance company in North Carolina made nutrition coaching and a healthy food delivery program a standard benefit for members, and since the challenge launched the USDA's Summer EBT program has allowed 37 states to feed children over the summer, its expected 21 million low income kids will use the program this summer.
The US House passed a bill on Nuclear energy representing the first update in US nuclear energy policy in decades, it expands the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and reduces reducing licensing fees. Nuclear power represents America's single largest source of clean energy, with almost half of carbon-free electricity coming from it. This bill will boost the industry and make it easier to build new plants
Vice President Harris announced key changes to the Child Care & Development Block Grant (CCDBG) program. The CCDBG supports the families of a million American children every month to help afford child care. The new changes include capping the co-pay families pay to no more than 7% of their income. Studies show that high income families pay 6-8% of their income in childcare while low income families pay 31%. The cap will reduce or eliminate fees for 100,000 families saving them an average of over $200 a month. The changes also strength payments to childcare providers insuring prompt payment.
The House passed a bill making changes to the Small Business Administration’s 8(a) program. The 8(a) is an intensive 9 year program that offers wide ranging training and support to small business owners who are socially and economically disadvantaged, predominantly native owned businesses. Under the current structure once a business reaches over 6.8 million in assets they're kicked off the program, even though the SBA counts anything under $10 million as a small business, many companies try to limit growth to stay on the program. The House also passed a bill to create an Office of Native American Affairs at the SBA, in order to support Native-owned small businesses.
The White House and HUD announced steps to boost the housing supply and lower costs plans include making permanent the Federal Financing Bank Risk Sharing program, the program has created 12,000 affordable housing units since 2021 with $2 billion and plans 38,000 additional units over ten years. As well as support for HUD's HOME program which has spent $4.35 billion since 2021 to build affordable rental homes and make home ownership a reality for Americans. For the first time an administration is making funds available specifically for investments in manufactured housing, $225 million. 20 million Americans live in manufactured housing, the largest form of unsubsidized affordable housing in the country, particularly the rural poor and people in tribal communities.
The Department of Energy announced $336 million in investments in rural and remote communities to lower energy costs and improve reliability. The projects represent communities in 20 states and across 30 Native tribes. 21% of Navajo Nation homes and 35% of Hopi Indian Tribe homes remain unelectrified, one of the projects hopes to bring that number to 0. Another project supports replacing a hydroelectric dam in Alaska replacing all the Chignik Bay Tribal Council's diesel power with clear hydro power. The DoE also announced $18 million for Transformative Energy projects lead by tribal or local governments and $25 million for Tribal clean energy projects, this comes on top of $75 million in Tribal clean energy projects in 2023
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg put forward new rules to ensure airline passengers who use wheelchairs can travel safely and with dignity. Under the planned rules mishandling a wheelchair would be a violation of the ACAA, airlines would be required to immediately notify the passenger of their rights. Airlines would be required to repair or replace the wheelchair at the preferred vendor of the passenger's choice as well as provide a loaner wheelchair that fits the passenger's needs/requirements
The EPA launched a $3 Billion dollar program to help ports become zero-emission. This investment in green tech and zero-emission will help important transportation hubs fight climate change and replace some of the largest concentrations of diesel powered heavy equipment in America.
the EPA announced $1 Billion dollars to help clean up toxic Superfund sites. This is the last of $3.5 billion the Biden administration has invested in cleaning up toxic waste sites known as Superfund sites. This investment will help finish clean up at 85 sites across the country as well as start clean up at 25 new sites. Many Superfund sites are contained and then left not cleaned for years even decades. Thanks to the Biden-Harris team's investment the EPA has been able to do more clean up of Superfund sites in the last 2 years than the 5 years before it. More than 25% of America's black and hispanic population live with-in 5 miles of a Superfund site.
Bonus: Sweden cleared the final major barrier to become NATO's 32nd member. The Swedish Foreign Minster is expected to fly to Washington to deposit the articles of accession at the US State Department. NATO membership for Sweden and its neighbor Finland (joined last year) has been a major foreign policy goal of President Biden in the face of Russian aggressive against Ukraine. Former President Trump has repeatedly attacked NATO and declared he wants to leave the 75 year old Alliance, even going so far as to tell Russia to "do whatever the hell they want" with European NATO allies

I’m creating an informational series on tube feeding on my Instagram @ paralyzedguts and I’d like to get some questions and perceptions from orally fed people on tube feeding! I’d like to create something like a FAQ and a common misconceptions post about enteral nutrition.
Tell me in the tags what you know (or think you know) about feeding tubes! Do you have a feeding tube? If so what kind? You can shoot me an ask as well.
I have a GJ (gastrojejunostomy) tube for gastroparesis. I take all my nutrition through the tube (100% tube fed).

A silhouette of a human demonstrating multiple routes of nutrition.
The person has a pink bottle with a route line going through the mouth, down the esophagus, and into the stomach to represent oral nutrition.
They have a grey feed bag with multiple route lines to represent enteral nutrition. One from the bag in the nose, down the esophagus and into the stomach representing an NG (nasal-gastric) tube. Another from the bag into the stomach, representing a G (gastrostomy) tube. And a third from the bag to the intestine, representing a J (jejunostomy) tube.
They have an orange parenteral bag with two route lines. The first from the bag to the person’s arm, representing total or partial parenteral nutrition via a PICC line. The second one from the bag to the person’s heart, representing TPN/PPN via a port.

Food bank usage across Canada is the highest it’s been since 1989, with a 47 per cent increase nationwide since March 2022. This number is expected to rise significantly when the data from the March 2023 to March 2024 period is calculated.
Ahead of next month’s federal budget, a London NDP MP is pushing for a national school lunch program.
Lindsay Mathyssen, MP for London-Fanshawe, says a national program would amount to equality for children in public schools through healthy food and nutrition.
“When you’re going to school hungry, you don’t concentrate, you don’t perform the way you need to, you can’t absorb things,” says Mathyssen. “If you’re constantly hungry that’s always on your mind.”
Such a program is long overdue, she says. Not only will it provide food to students, but it also aims to alleviate the burden on their parents or guardians. Many people are forced to choose between rent or other necessities and food, so this would provide some relief. [...]

April 30, 2023
"Day of the Homeschooled Child is a yearly observance to recognize children harmed by minimal homeschool laws across the U.S. On this day, we come together to honor three specific groups within the homeschooling community:
Children who have been murdered in homeschool settings
Children who survived severe abuse and neglect in homeschool settings
Homeschool alumni with traumatic experiences
Why? Because in the national conversation surrounding homeschooling, abused children and adults are too often unheard. That’s why we founded the Coalition for Responsible Home Education and created Homeschooling’s Invisible Children, a public database of child abuse and neglect cases in homeschool settings. And it’s why we created Day of the Homeschooled Child, set in April to coincide with National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
Today, over 1.7 million children are homeschooled in the U.S. But unfortunately, state homeschool laws have almost no measures to ensure these children are receiving a quality education in a safe home.
Here’s a glimpse of what this policy failure looks like:
In 48 states, it’s legal for registered sex offenders and convicted child abusers to homeschool their own children without any restrictions. There are no requirements for those at-risk children to have contact with mandatory reporters of child abuse.
In 11 states, parents aren’t required to notify education officials of their decision to homeschool. That means countless homeschooled children aren’t being accounted for in any way.
No state requires homeschooling parents to screen their children for medical conditions or ensure those children receive care. Abusive homeschooling parents can keep their children away from life-saving medical care without anyone to notice or intervene.
Millions of homeschooled children lack guaranteed access to child welfare programs their public-schooled peers have. That includes food and nutrition programs, age-appropriate sex education, mental health counseling and resources, and monitoring for child abuse and neglect."

Famine is already probably present in at least some areas of northern Gaza, while other areas are in danger of falling into conditions of starvation, the US state department said on Friday a day after the world’s top court ordered Israel to admit food aid into the territory.
“While we can say with confidence that famine is a significant risk in the south and centre but not present, in the north, it is both a risk and quite possibly is present in at least some areas,” a state department official told Reuters.
The US comments add to a growing and powerful consensus that Israel’s military offensive in the Palestinian coastal territory has triggered a famine.
The number of trucks distributing aid in south and central Gaza had nearly reached 200 a day, an increase on a month ago, but more were needed, the state department official said.
“You need to address the full nutrition needs of the population of Gaza of all ages. That means more than just that minimal survival level feeding,” the official said, adding that malnutrition, and infant and young-child mortality was a significant, growing problem.
“It has to be addressed by additional assistance coming and the right kind of assistance coming in,” he said.
The official added that a maritime aid corridor promised by the US president, Joe Biden, which includes the construction of a floating port, would be ready in mid to late April, making efforts to deliver substantial aid by sea a race against time unless there is a meaningful increase in deliveries by road via Israeli border crossings.
The comments from Washington come despite Israeli claims that it is allowing sufficient access of food and other aid into Gaza. Last week Unrwa – the main aid agency delivering aid to Palestinians – said that it had been prevented from delivering aid.
The US warning follows hard on the heels of a ruling by the international court of justice (ICJ) in The Hague, which also warned that famine was becoming a fact in parts of Gaza.
On Thursday a panel of judges at the UN’s top court, which is already considering a complaint from South Africa that Israel is committing genocide in the Palestinian territory, issued a unanimous ruling ordering Israel to admit humanitarian assistance.
“The court observes that Palestinians in Gaza are no longer facing only a risk of famine … but that famine is setting in,” the judges said.
That, in turn, followed a report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, the global authority on food security, assessing that famine was imminent and likely to occur by May in northern Gaza, and could spread across the entire enclave by July.
On Friday the head of Unrwa, Philippe Lazzarini, tweeted that the ICJ’s ruling was “a stark reminder that the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is man made and worsening”.
Israel has faced accusations, including from the UN’s top rights official, Volker Türk, that it is potentially committing “a war crime” by continuing to obstruct food aid to Gaza’s population of 2.3 million.
The latest comments come amid mounting frustration in the Biden administration with Israel, which is a recipient of substantial military, financial and diplomatic support from Washington.
In a statement marking Arab-American Heritage Month, Biden said: “We must pause to reflect on the pain being felt by so many in the Arab American community with the war in Gaza.
“The trauma, death and destruction in Israel and Gaza have claimed, and continue to claim, far too many innocent lives – including family and friends of Arab Americans across our nation.”
Biden, who is facing significant disillusionment among US voters over the war in an election year, said that his administration was “working with partners across the region to respond to the urgent humanitarian crisis, deliver desperately needed aid to Gaza, free the hostages taken during the brutal Hamas terrorist attack on 7 October, and establish an immediate ceasefire that would last at least six weeks, which we would work to build into something more enduring”.
The latest famine warnings came as the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, approved new talks on a Gaza ceasefire, and heavy fighting continued in the strip including at several hospitals.
Netanyahu’s office said new talks on a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release would take place in Doha and Cairo “in the coming days … with guidelines for moving forward in the negotiations”, days after they appeared stalled.
On Monday the UN security council demanded an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza, the release of hostages held by militants, and “ensuring humanitarian access”.
Member states are obliged to abide by such resolutions, but the Doctors Without Borders charity said nothing has changed on the ground.
Aid groups say only a fraction of the supplies required have been allowed in since October, when Israel placed Gaza under near-total siege.
Israel has tried to blame shortages on the Palestinian side, namely a lack of capacity to distribute aid, while humanitarian groups say that Israel is not allowing enough trucks in to make deliveries.

- Picks the other up from the bar when they’re too drunk to drive
- Takes care of on sick days
- Drags the other person out into the water on beach day

- Brings the other lunch at work
- Has the better parental relationship
- Tries to start role-playing in bed
- Embarrassingly drunk dancer
- Still cries watching Titanic
- Firmly believes in couples costumes

- Makes the other eat breakfast
- Remembers anniversaries
- Brings up having kids
Tumblr media
Thanks for choosing two of my all-time-even-when-I‘m-as-old-as-solar-systems-ships✨Let‘s see…
Tumblr media
- Gives nose/forehead kisses:
Nose? Definitely Hermione and it drives Draco mad, because it’s such a silly gesture and he doesn’t really understand it because WHY THE BLOODY NOSE of all places but secretly he loves it. Forehead? Draco. He almost overuses it. It’s a no-nonsense gesture, a “I’m a hopeless romantic deal with it” declaration, a “You’re safe with me” assurance and a “I adore you more than I have words for” love letter.
- gets jealous the most:
Draco although he doesn’t show it. But there are signs. Hermione can tell. The eyebrow twitch, the love bombing once they’re alone, the overcompensation with grand speeches and display of luxury but the most telling one of all: Draco is making an utter fool of himself—no matter how calm and collected he looks doing it.
- picks the other up from the bar when they’re too drunk to drive:
Draco. He acts as if he’s annoyed by it but he’s satisfied that she calls him to pick her up, that she feels safe with him. Also: drunk Hermione is very funny and cute and entertaining and he teases her about it when she’s sober again.
- takes care of on sick days:
Draco. By the time Hermione listed her symptoms he has already owled for potions and healers and plans to buy enough groceries for at least a month just in case. Hermione doesn’t want him to make a big fuss about it but he basically declares it a national emergency and makes sure she really recovers. Meaning: she is not allowed to read or research while sick.
- Drags the other person out into the water on beach day:
Hermione. Because what’s the point of going to the beach if you don’t go into the water but of course Draco argues, that it’s called “beach day” and not “swim” or “ocean day”.
- gives unprompted massages:
Hermione. It’s her way of easing things up between them. A physical way for her to express she is there with him, that she listens.
- drives/rides shotgun
Hermione. Jump in. We don’t have time for questions.
- brings the other lunch at work:
Draco. Proper nutrition isn’t one of Hermione‘s top priorities. She skips meals on a daily basis because she is too focused on her work. Also: it gives Draco an excuse to stop by and steal some smooches.
- has the better parental relationship:
Hermione.
- tries to start role-playing in bed:
Draco. He read in a muggle magazine, made the quiz that determined whether that’s something he could be interested in and tried it the first chance he got. Needless to say it ended in them almost dying of laughter.
- embarrassingly drunk dancer:
Hermione. And she forces Draco to join in.
- still cries watching Titanic:
Draco. Being the hopeless romantic in the relationship, it’s right down his aisle. Although he slightly sympathises with the rich and therefore get’s smacked by Hermione.
- firmly believes in couples costume:
Draco. It’s one of the few benefits of being a couple and he is fully committed to see it to its full potential.
- breaks the expensive gift rule dusting Christmas:
Draco.
- makes the other eat breakfast:
Draco. Hermione is not allowed to leave the house until she’s had breakfast. Just coffee doesn’t count.
- remembers anniversaries:
Both. Although Hermione remembers a lot of personal and small ones like the first time he smiled at her.
- brings up having kids:
Draco. Every chance he gets. There’s no point in postponing because they love each other, they are settled and he wants a minimum of two. A boy and a girl. Three if he’s lucky and Hermione plays along.
Tumblr media
- Gives nose/forehead kisses:
Kakashi. For appearing so aloof all the time he does use kisses and touches as his main love language and once Sakura got used to it, she realised how much she actually needed this kind of affection from a partner.
- gets jealous the most:
Sakura. Kakashi is a beautiful, respected man and Sakura was used to being treated indifferently and always being the second fiddle. Noticing other women glancing after him makes her want to explode.
- picks the other up from the bar when they’re too drunk to drive:
Kakashi. Sakura is a clingy and honest drunk. So it’s quite amusing but for the most part he doesn’t trust anyone else with picking her up.
- takes care of on sick days:
Sakura. There is no debate. Kakashi isn’t allowed to leave the house and is fed chicken broth and at least 3 litres of tea. And he is not allowed to complain.
- Drags the other person out into the water on beach day:
Sakura. Kakashi isn’t a fan of the cold water but can’t say no when Sakura wears that large sun hat and green swimming suit and has that huge smile on her face when she starts a splashing war.
- gives unprompted massages:
Kakashi. After a long day in the hospital or on a mission her shoulders and neck are so tense and although she never complains or asks, he can see that she is uncomfortable. He can’t stand it. Within a few minutes she falls asleep.
- drives/rides shotgun:
Sakura.
- brings the other lunch at work:
Kakashi. Although Sakura knows how important a nutritious meal is, she is too exhausted to meal prep. It gives Kakashi a sense of fulfilment knowing he can do this little thing for her.
- has the better parental relationship:
Sakura. But Kakashi was basically adopted into the family by day one.
- tries to start role-playing in bed:
Sakura. She convinces herself it must be something Kakashi likes because he has more experience and because of the Icha Icha books and she doesn’t want to be “bad in bed”. So she tries it and Kakashi humours her but makes it clear he is not into it, especially if Sakura doesn’t enjoy it.
- embarrassingly drunk dancer:
Sakura. Kakashi can’t decide if it’s cute or funny or oddly attractive but Sakura has moves he has never seen before.
- still cries watching Titanic:
Sakura.
- firmly believes in couples costume:
Kakashi. It surprises Sakura just how committed he is. She has to admit it’s actually quite fun.
- breaks the expensive gift rule dusting Christmas:
Sakura. Her gifts are a combination of expensive and thoughtful. She has a vision in mind.
- makes the other eat breakfast:
Sakura. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. End of story.
- remembers anniversaries:
Kakashi. He makes sure to remind Sakura what’s so special about each anniversary: the way she looked, how she smiled, something she said. Those moments are precious to him.
- brings up having kids:
Sakura. She never thought about it before but with Kakashi it just makes sense.

Chris Evans And Jinx Are Teaming Up To Be Superheroes For Accessible, Wholesome Dog Food
It turns out, Marvel didn’t mention Captain America is very much a dog person.
Chris Evans, the 41-year-old megastar actor and last year’s “Sexiest Man Alive,” is brand ambassador for pet nutrition startup Jinx. The company published a press release on Wednesday wherein it announced the so-called “Dog Dream Box.” A limited edition collection made in collaboration with Evans, the new Dog Dream Box consists of four things: a bag of kibble, chicken tender treats, a tennis ball, and a rugged rope toy designed by Evans and his beloved dog named Dodger. [...]
The Dog Dream Box, priced at $19.28, is available today exclusively on Walmart’s website. It will expand to select brick-and-mortar locations nationwide beginning Monday, May 1. The rollout coincides with May being National Pet Month.
“We are thrilled to be launching this collection with Chris and Dodger, longtime friends of the brand and now creative partners of Jinx,” Kyle Banahan, Jinx’s president, said in a statement for the press release. “What is so fantastic about our partnership with Chris is his genuine love for the brand—he was introduced to us initially as a customer and deeply believes in what we are doing. We, in turn, were inspired by the authentic bond that Chris and Dodger share that reminded us of the way we feel about our own dogs. The Dog Dream Box is the ultimate starter kit to make sure your dog is living their happiest, healthiest life.”
For his part, Evans said in a statement for Jinx’s press release: “I am excited for other dogs around the country to try some of Dodger’s favorite bites and fall in love with Jinx like we did, as a healthy diet is crucial to their overall wellbeing.”Read more on Forbes.com

This helps to unravel at least some of the enigmas raised by the farmers’ protests of recent months. Instead of the classical alliance between workers and peasants proposed by Lenin, are we witnessing the formation of a new historic bloc? With tractors, combine harvesters and all the other machinery, the technological revolution wiped out the peasant masses Lenin was describing. Today’s peasants (at least those who have been protesting in Europe in recent months, and certainly not the labourers – often immigrants, even more often illegal ones – who work in their fields) are small landowners, similar to independent truck drivers, the small self-exploiting capitalists described by the Italian sociologist Sergio Bologna (one cannot help but remember the independent Chilean truck drivers who contributed so much to the fall of Salvador Allende). Along with nutritional sustenance, peasants provide global capitalism with ideological support. This abstract financial system needs to anchor itself deep in our psyches in order to effectively govern at the level of the nation-state. Capital’s political representatives do not need farmers’ votes, nor their economic output, as much as they need the ‘imagined community’ that is created around the potato, the grape or the white asparagus. A representative of Dutch farmers remarked in 2019, ‘If there will soon be no more farmers, don’t say “wir haben es nicht gewusst”’. That he was unafraid of ridicule in making a comparison with the Holocaust is an indication of how far symbolic investment in the figure of the farmer can go.
Yet more groping towards the question "Why do farmers have so much political power, when they have neither the votes nor the economic power of sectors governments worldwide are happy to piss on?"

National Clean Your Home Month Day 13
I woke up very grumpy and low energy this morning thanks to overheating because I'd put my normal amount of blankets on, anticipating that the outdoor temperature would drop to near freezing like it usually does, but instead it warmed up overnight to 50°F. While overheating, I had this weird dream about seeing Chris Colfer at a tour appearance with @spaceorphan18. It wasn't a book tour, it was him going around the country talking about how making Glee was the worst 3 years of his life. (Yes I know, but in the dream it was 3 years.) Also he still looked 23.
I had more coffee than usual, did a shorter swim than usual, and then managed to do maintenance chores and tick some things off my list.
- in addition to washing my swimsuit, I used the rest of the vinegar solution left over from yesterday for soaking a shirt that had deodorant stains. The shirt's not dry yet, but from the preliminary inspection, it looks like the soak worked!
- called the bank to deal with the credit card issue I discovered yesterday, they said they would fix it and I shouldn't be charged for late payment
- Ticked off a whole bunch of financial related chores from my list. Ugh. But they're done. And I listened to my iTunes on shuffle while I did it. Top sing-along moments were Barbra Streisand singing "Where Is It Written?", "Steven's Last Night In Town" from Ben Folds Five and "I Want A Monster To Be My Friend" from Sesame Street.
- folded towels that were washed yesterday while watching "American Commune," a documentary about The Farm commune. I was super excited to find this documentary yesterday since I've had my copy of The New Farm Vegetarian Cookbook since I was a teenager and have never stopped using it. Some kids who were raised on The Farm talked about how they ate soybeans constantly, and this will not surprise you if you have read the cookbook.
- made tofu and nutritional yeast "cheese" sauce for lunch and ate it with homemade crackers. I promise, I had actually planned that for lunch even before watching "American Commune", but having watched it, the lunch seemed especially appropriate.
- put away the towels
- took a picture of some of the wool dryer balls I've made in hopes that people on Tumblr will want some because this is really too much for one household:
Tumblr media
They're made of clean wool straps from old wool socks, sweaters, etc. Let me know if you want a set! I can't guarantee particular colors, but you can let me know your preferences. We use three in our dryer. No charge for the balls and no charge for shipping in the US; if you want to pay something, I would gladly accept Tumblr rainbow checkmarks or other badges I don't have yet.

🇵🇸 🚑🏥 🚨 CHILDREN IN GAZA FACE DEADLY TRIPLE THREAT, SAYS UNICEF IN PRESS RELEASE
The Palestinian children living in the Gaza Strip face a deadly triple threat of disease, starvation and occupation violence says the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) in a press release on Friday.
According to the press release, children in Gaza face a "triple threat to their lives" as cases of disease rise, nutrition falls, and "the escalation in hostilities" approaches its 14th week.
The UNICEF points to the thousands of children who've already been killed in Israeli bombing and shelling of the Gaza Strip. The press release also emphasized that while conditions for children are rapidly deteriorating, there are increasing cases of diarrhea, while food poverty is on the rise, raising the risk of mounting child deaths.
“Children in Gaza are caught in a nightmare that worsens with every passing day,” UNICEF’s Executive Director, Catherine Russell is quoted as saying.
“Children and families in the Gaza Strip continue to be killed and injured in the fighting, and their lives are increasingly at risk from preventable diseases and lack of food and water. All children and civilians must be protected from violence and have access to basic services and supplies," she added.
According to the press release, cases of diarrhea among children under the age of five rose from 48'000 cases, to 71'000 cases in a single week beginning Dec. 17th, the equivalent of 3'200 new cases of diarrhea per day.
UNICEF points to the increasing in cases of diarrhea in such a short period is a strong indication that child health in the Palestinian enclave is quickly deteriorating.
According to UNICEF, before the escalation in Israeli aggression, an average of 2'000 cases of diarrhea in children under the age of five were recorded each month, with the increase to today's totals representing a 2'000% increase.
The UNICEF press release adds that, "Since the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification warned of the risk of famine in the Gaza Strip in late December, UNICEF has found that an increasing number of children are not getting their basic nutrition needs met."
UNICEF also emphasizes that about 90% of children under two years of age are now consuming "two or fewer food groups" according to a UNICEF survey conducted on Dec. 26th.
UNICEF says that the same survey, conducted just two weeks previous showed that 80% of children under two were consuming two or fewer food groups at that time, a 10% increase in just two weeks, a marked deterioration for such a short time frame.
UNICEF added that most Gazan families said their children are only getting grains, including bread, or milk, which UNICEF says meets the definition of "severe food poverty".
UNICEF goes on to point out that dietary diversity for pregnant and breastfeeding women has also been severely compromised, with 25% of respondents to their survey saying they'd only consumed a single food type the day before, with 65% having only eaten two food types.
"The deteriorating situation is raising concerns about acute malnutrition and mortality breaching famine thresholds," the press release says.
UNICEF says it is "particularly worried" about the nutrition of over 155'000 pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers, in addition to the over 135'000 children under two, "given their specific nutrition needs and vulnerability."
"When combined and left untreated," UNICEF says, "malnutrition and disease create a deadly cycle."
"Evidence has shown that children with poor health and nutrition are more vulnerable to serious infections like acute diarrhea. Acute and prolonged diarrhea seriously exacerbates poor health and malnutrition in children, putting them at risk of death.
UNICEF says that Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip has "damaged or destroyed essential water, sanitation and health systems," and has "limited the ability to treat severe malnutrition."
In addition to the occupation bombing and shelling, displaced Palestinian families living in Gaza are unable to maintain the necessary hygiene levels necessary to prevent disease. And given the alarming lack of potable water and sanitation, many families are forced into openly defecating in the streets.
On top of this, only a few functioning hospitals remain in service in the Palestinian enclave, with the medical centers still open remaining focused on responding to the unending streams of trauma patients wounded in Israeli occupation bombing and shelling.
In this way, the local hospitals and healthcare personnel are "unable to adequately treat disease outbreaks."
UNICEF points to its own work in the Gaza Strip, delivering vital medical and other supplies, hygiene kits, infant formula, specialized food needs, nutrient supplements, and ready-to-use therapeutic foods for the "early prevention and treatment of acute malnutrition."
"UNICEF is calling for the resumption of commercial traffic so the shelves of shops can be restocked, and for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire to help save civilian lives and alleviate suffering," the press release states.
"UNICEF works to provide the life-saving aid the children of Gaza so desperately need. But we urgently need better and safer access to save children's lives," UNICEF's Executive Director, Catherine Russell is quoted as saying.
"The futures of thousands more children in Gaza hang in the balance. The world cannot stand by and watch. The violence and suffering of children must stop."
