National Fruit Compote Day
With a burst of natural sweetness, this delightful mix of fruits cooked to perfection promises a fruity explosion that tantalizes taste buds.
If you’ve got a sweet tooth, you’re probably a fan of the fruit compote. A delicious mixture of fruits or berries and sugar, the compote brings a punch of flavor to greek yogurt, a fruitful ending to a full course meal, or a sweet addition to your morning cereal. And on March 1st, if you ever needed an excuse to start your day with a mixture of sugar and fruits, then here it is!
History of Fruit Compotes
A fruit compote is a simple treat. It is technically a fruit sauce, made with fresh or frozen fruit chunks and sugar. The sugar is cooked on the stove to make a syrup, and the fruit is added in and warmed until the two mix together to create a syrupy sweet sauce. The sauce has a variety of uses, such as toast spread, in smoothies, on top of cakes or waffles, or into granola.
Food historians credit the dish’s original origin to France. The dish was originally served by itself in 17th century France as a dessert item. Interestingly enough, the dessert was originally created for its supposed health benefits.
The idea was that this dessert, or fruits cooked in any syrup, balanced out the effects of humidity in the body. The dessert was treated as a health remedy originally but eventually was served for pleasure as a dessert.
As the dish entered the medieval era, it was served at the beginning of the final course at a feast, usually with a potage, or a creamy vegetable and grain soup. Compote then became a staple dish in all feasts! In the Renaissance period, the compote was served cold in a dish to signal the end of a feast.
Since the meal was easy to prepare, did not cost much, and could be greatly varied based on the type of fruit, it became a staple throughout Jewish homes in Europe. The item was served at Jewish meals on toast, in yogurts, and creams.
Today, many countries serve compote instead of whole fruits and vegetables. Vegetable compotes are often served as soups, dips, or spreads. Fruit compotes are often used as toppings or desserts. Today, some of the most prolific compote recipes come from Germany, Holland, Belgium, Scandinavia, and France.
History of National Fruit Compote Day
Exactly when National Fruit Compote Day started being observed isn’t clear, but the food item is celebrated has been around for donkey’s years. The word ‘compote’ is from the French language, meaning a mixture.
With no dairy ingredients, fruit compote became a popular staple cuisine in Europe – but you will often find it served with yogurt or whipped cream. Many people who observe a dairy-free diet will also freeze fruit compotes in containers and eat this as a dairy-free ice cream substitute!
Fruit compote also goes well with cakes and biscuits, often serving as the fruity part of homemade cheesecakes. Pouring it over granola and cream also makes it the perfect end to a full course meal.
How to celebrate National Fruit Compote Day
If you’re feeling a bit handy in the kitchen, cooking up some fruit compote of your own isn’t too hard to do at all. Just choose your favorite berries and fruits, and boil them in water with plenty of sugar and spices. To give it some extra flavor you can add vanilla to the syrup, or drop in some orange peel or cinnamon sticks while it’s boiling. Dropping in some grated coconut will give your creation a little something extra.
Consider also trying a compote-based recipe, such as using compote to make frozen fruit popsicles, or mixing compote into ice cream to make a thickened frozen fruit treat! Make a simple compote to put into other treats.
Try topping your toast, cereal, granola, yogurt, or ice creams with this sweet spread, and you may just find your new favorite treat! If you want to eat it hot, try baking a cake or cupcake, and then filling or topping it with warm fruit compote!
If you’re in the mood for something a little boozy, one traditional recipe sees the syrup made with wine, but you could just use dried fruits soaked in alcohol if you wish. Some recipe variations call for wine, rum, or tequila to create a tangy flavor mixed with sweetened sugary fruit. You can either soak the fruit in alcohol for a few days to soak up the flavor, or you can mix the alcohol in at the cooking stage for a sharper flavor!
Looking for a creative way to get your daily serving of fruits? Don’t like eating fruits whole? There’s no better way to get your “five a day” than with a tasty treat like this, so give fruit compote a try today and join many others across the world observing National Fruit Compote Day.

Happy National Fruit Compote Day! Compote (French for “mixture”) is a dessert originating from Europe, made of whole or pieces of fruit in sugar syrup. Whole fruits are cooked in water with sugar and spices.   The syrup may be seasoned with vanilla, lemon or orange peel, cinnamon sticks or powder, cloves, other spices, ground almonds, grated coconut, candied fruit, or raisins.   Compote can be served either warm or cold.   Some compote variants use dried fruit.   The Culinary Institute of America considers compote to be one of two types of fruit sauce: there’s coulis, made with smooth, pureed fruit and then there’s compote, which is a chunky mixture.   Compote conformed to the medieval belief that fruit cooked in sugar syrup balanced the effects of humidity on the body. 🍒🍑🍍🥝🍋🥭 #NationalFruitCompoteDay #FoodSales #FoodConsultant #FoodDude #FoodService #Food #FoodServiceSolutions #FoodOfTheDay #NobertSales @NobertSales (at Germantown, Tennessee) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpQZXAZpnJ0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

National Blueberry Cheesecake Day
National Blueberry Cheesecake Day is celebrated every year on May 26. It is a day dedicated to the blueberry cheesecake, one of the most popular desserts in the U.S. Although originating in ancient Greece, cheesecakes have today spread to the far corners of the world and each region has its own varieties of cheesecakes. One such very popular variety is the blueberry cheesecake.
History of National Blueberry Cheesecake Day
Cheesecake is a rich dessert cake made with cream and soft cheese on a graham cracker, cookie, or pastry crust. Often, it is topped with a fruit compote or puree.
Every year on May 26, people all around the U.S. celebrate National Blueberry Cheesecake Day. Legend has it that blueberry cheesecakes were fed to the athletes at the Olympic Games in Greece. It is a historical dessert that has been carried on through centuries without losing popularity.
While cheesecakes can be traced back to ancient Greece, the cheesecakes that people eat now are a more recent innovation. People have come up with different kinds of interesting flavors for cheesecakes but May 26 is the celebration of the classic blueberry cheesecake.
As cheesecakes spread to different countries, more ingredients were added and different varieties began popping up. While in America, cream cheese is the primary ingredient for cheesecakes, Italians prefer to use ricotta. On the other hand, Germany and Poland use quark, a special kind of curd cheese. As cheesecakes became localized with time, bakers thought of newer innovations for it. One of the most popular innovations was the addition of fruit to cheesecakes and perhaps the best of them all was the sweet and enticing blueberries!
Blueberry cheesecakes, too, come in a number of varieties. Some of the most unique blueberry cheesecakes include blueberry mint cheesecakes, chocolate blueberry cheesecakes, and kombucha blueberry cheesecakes!
National Blueberry Cheesecake Day timeline

The first Greek cheesecake recipe is written by Athenaeus of Naucratis, a Greek grammarian and rhetorician.
1872 Cheese by Accident
Dairyman William Lawrence of New York accidentally invents cream cheese while trying to make a French cheese known as Neufchâtel.
1912 Cheese of Today
James Kraft develops pasteurized cream cheese that is the trademark cream cheese used by many cheesecake makers today.

5 Facts About Cheesecakes That You Didn’t Know
Cheesecakes are not cakes
Olympic cheese
Types of cheesecakes
World’s most expensive cheesecake
Cheesecake postage stamps
Cheesecakes, despite their name, are basically tarts, and the word ‘cake’ is applied to a broader food category than what cheesecakes are today.
It is believed that cheesecakes originated in ancient Greece where they were served to Greek athletes at the first Olympic Games.
Cheesecakes can be categorized into two types: baked and unbaked — and, based on the region, each of these is available in different varieties.
The world's most expensive cheesecake comes from Saks Fifth Avenue, a famous American luxury department store chain.
Häagen-Dazs, the popular American ice-cream brand, once made flavored postage stamps of their flavors including strawberry cheesecake, macadamia nut brittle, and cookies and cream.
Why We Love National Blueberry Cheesecake Day
It celebrates food
It celebrates cheese
It celebrates cheesecake
Food is always celebratory. Especially food that serves to make us realize how many wonderful flavors there are in this world that we can taste and relish.
Cheese came into existence even before written language did. According to Ancient Polish cheese strainers, cheese dates back 7,500 years. And Egyptian murals that date back 4,000 years also show the art of cheesemaking.
The popularity of cheesecake is widespread because different regions of the world have come up with their own versions of it. Italians like ricotta cheese, Greeks like feta or ‘mizithra,’ Germans like cottage cheese, and the Japanese prefer a combo of egg white and cornstarch.

ATLA OC Week Day 4: Meeting the Gaang
@atlaocweek
Mizuki had realized her dreams, and done it her own way.  As soon as Fire Lord Zuko’s funds for his half-siblings had started arriving and they were able to hire a nanny, she’d wasted no time in finishing her culinary education, cramming three years’ worth of education into less than two years of physical time.  After taking a couple of years to get some work experience, she had applied for a position in the Royal Palace’s kitchens just as everyone else did, despite Zuko saying that there would always be a position open for her.  She got the job fair and square, and finally, just a few weeks ago, she had been promoted to Junior Pastry Chef at age 22.
However, the kitchens were always so busy that Mizuki had had little time to celebrate.  Mere days after her promotion, the Avatar, his fiancée, and their friends had arrived to mark the sixth anniversary of the Fire Lord’s accession to the throne.  Although Mizuki was spared the agony of having to come up with meatless entrees at every meal, the Avatar was also very fond of sweets, so she had been kept on her toes attempting to find and replicate old Air Nomad recipes.
Today, however, she had a little bit of breathing room.  Last night’s dessert had been mini tarts, with custard or moon peach filling. Those things were so damn fiddly to make, what with all the shaping of the dough and filling, so Mizuki had felt a sense of relief when the head pastry chef had okayed her plan for some simpler sweets.  The cookies had already been baked, and she was going to make a nice fruit compote to go along with it.  Currently, she was slicing ash bananas; sure, she could have delegated this task to a lower-ranked cook, but it was a nice way to de-stress.  Knife work had always soothed her.
“Wow!  Look at her go!”
Thankfully, she had enough experience with sudden loud noises in the kitchen that she didn’t jump, which would almost certainly have resulted in her finger being sliced open and all this fruit having to be tossed away.  Instead, she calmly put her knife down, and turned to see four people standing near the entrance.  Although Mizuki had never seen them up-close before, she instantly recognized them.
Dashing over to them, she said, “Avatar Aang.  Master Katara.  Sifu Toph. And…Sokka.”  Fuck, that was awkward.  “It’s an honor to meet you all.”
“You don’t have to do all that fake-polite stuff,” Toph assured her.  “We’re not those fancy-pants Fire Nation nobles.  If it’s not a good time, just yell at us or something and we’ll leave.”  Turning to Sokka, she added, “You scared her, Snoozles.  Her heartbeat is through the roof.”
Sokka said, “Yeah, uh, sorry about that.”
Mizuki shrugged. “It’s okay.  I’ll live.”  It wasn’t so much that he’d scared her as it was Mizuki recalling what had happened the last time someone had complimented her knife skills, but she had no desire to start discussing that with people she had only just met.
“But you have to admit it was pretty cool!” Sokka said.  He started rapidly slicing through the air with his hand, making appropriate sound effects.  “Ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-CH!”
“It didn’t look like anything special to me,” Toph told him.
Sokka’s face lit up, and he pointed at her.  “Aha! I’m not falling for that this time!”  Toph stuck her tongue out at him in return.
“Uh…guys…” Katara cut in.  “Maybe you should just let Aang tell her what he wanted to tell her and not waste any more of her time?”
Once they’d calmed down, Aang said, “I just wanted to tell you that we all really liked those little tarts last night.  They tasted exactly how they used to make them in the Air Temples.  And when we asked Zuko, he said you were probably the person who made them.  So Katara and I were wondering…maybe you could make some more of them for our wedding next year?”
“If she has time for it, sweetie,” Katara reminded him.
“Of course,” Aang agreed.  They kissed, and began eye-sexing each other so intensely that Mizuki presumed that only her presence deterred them from starting to tear their clothes off each other on the spot.  Toph muttered something that sounded a lot like, “Get a room,” and Sokka made exaggerated retching noises.
“I’m glad you liked them. And I will try to supply some for your wedding if at all possible,” Mizuki said, feeling proud at herself for keeping a perfectly straight face.
Well, she thought as they left and she returned to work, public displays of affection or not, it was nice to get compliments on her cooking from a guy and not have to endure his flirting...or bear his children.   Although it had been years since she’d had to deal with Ozai, she was still pleasantly surprised whenever she encountered people who were capable of civilized conversation.
