Home Safety Checklist for Families
The sanctuary of your home is where precious moments unfold and memories are etched into the fabric of your family's story. Yet, within these walls lies the responsibility to shield your loved ones from the unforeseen. Hence, the commitment to family safety planning must be at the forefront of every homeowner's mind. Whether it's childproofing your home to safeguard your curious toddlers or home hazard prevention to protect the venerable, ensuring a securing home environment is an ongoing journey, filled with vigilance and care.
Tumblr media
Key Takeaways
Understand the importance of creating a living space that prioritizes the well-being of your family.
Apply practical steps to childproofing every nook and corner to prevent avoidable mishaps.
Recognize common household dangers and learn how to mitigate them effectively.
Emphasize the necessity of regular reviews and updates to your home safety procedures.
Embrace the peace of mind that comes from a well-secured home environment for your family.
Assessing Your Living Space for Potential Hazards
Ensuring a secure environment for your family begins with rigorous hazard detection throughout your home. It's all about understanding common risks and implementing strategies for prevention, such as securing furniture and storing substances safely. Let's break down the vital steps of creating a child safe home that is friendly for curious toddlers.
Identifying Common Household Dangers
Data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission underscores the prevalence of household items that we often overlook as potential threats. From minor objects that pose choking hazards to furniture that might tip over, vigilance is key. Even everyday items like electrical outlets and cleaning supplies need to be seen through the lens of child safety.
Choking hazards: small toys, batteries, magnets
Tipping risks: bookshelves, televisions, dressers
Access to chemicals: cleaning agents, detergents
Combining awareness with proactive safeguarding can substantially mitigate these risks.
Securing Furniture and Appliances to Prevent Accidents
According to the National Safety Council, anchoring heavy furniture and appliances is a non-negotiable aspect of childproofing. Appliance anchoring and using furniture restraints such as brackets, wall straps, and braces could be lifesavers, preventing the devastating consequences of tip-over accidents.
Secure top-heavy furniture to the wall
Use anti-tip brackets for appliances
Regularly inspect the stability of secured items
Ensuring stability not only protects young children but can also provide peace of mind.
Proper Storage of Medications and Toxic Substances
The American Association of Poison Control Centers places a significant emphasis on the proper and secure storage of medications and chemicals. Poison control is a critical component of maintaining a safe home for toddlers, and it can be achieved through a few dedicated steps:SubstanceStorage RecommendationsMedicationsHigh, locked cabinets well out of children's reachCleaning AgentsLocked areas, preferably in original containers with safety capsPesticidesAway from food and in locked storage
By implementing these measures, we not only adhere to poison prevention protocols but also create an environment where curiosity doesn't lead to harm.
youtube
As we navigate each section of our homes, taking these precautions ushers in a structure of safety that supports the growth and exploration of our littlest residents. Being thorough in securing home for toddlers ensures that our living spaces are as nurturing as they are safe. It is our responsibility to anticipate the unpredictable and shield our loved ones from preventable dangers lurking within our homes.
Fire Safety Measures Every Home Should Implement
Ensuring your home is prepared for the unexpected is not just about locking doors and childproofing cabinets; it's also about implementing essential fire safety measures. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), a crucial step in safeguarding your household is the proper smoke alarms installation. Smoke alarms should be a non-negotiable feature, placed in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every floor of your residence, basement included. This strategic placement is vital to provide the earliest possible warning in the event of a fire, giving your family precious time to evacuate to safety.
The importance of fire escape planning cannot be overstressed, a sentiment echoed by the American Red Cross. Every member of your family should be familiar with at least two exit strategies from each room, ensuring a swift and unobstructed pathway to the outdoors. Furthermore, create a family emergency meeting spot outdoors, which will serve as a roll call location, to account for all household members during a swift evacuation. Regular drills and discussions about the fire escape plan not only enhance preparedness but also help to reduce panic during a real emergency.
Equally imperative is the accessibility and maintenance of home fire extinguishers. The U.S. Fire Administration underscores the need for understanding the various types of extinguishers available and selecting the right one for the specific risks in your home, such as electrical equipment or cooking oils. Beyond just having these extinguishers on hand, it is essential that they are routinely inspected and that every capable person in the residence knows how to operate them. Integrating these fire prevention techniques into your family safety planning can significantly reduce the hazards of fire, turning potentially devastating situations into manageable incidents with well-prepared responses.

How to Choose the Right Scaffolding Accessories for Your
Project
Embarking on a construction project demands a careful and calculated approach to ensure both the safety of workers and the efficiency of the work at hand. Choosing the right scaffolding accessories is a pivotal aspect of this process. In this blog post, we will delve into a comprehensive guide that covers five essential factors to consider when selecting the perfect scaffolding accessories for your project.
1. Determine the Height of Your Project:
The first and foremost consideration is understanding the height requirements of your construction project. Different tasks necessitate various scaffold heights, and an accurate assessment is crucial. Take into account the number of levels your project entails, the architectural intricacies, and access points. Armed with this information, you can confidently choose scaffolding accessories that cater to the specific needs of your project.
2. Consider the Weight Capacity of the Scaffolding:
Safety is paramount in any construction setting, and this begins with a thorough understanding of the weight capacity your scaffolding system must bear. Calculate the combined weight of workers, tools, and materials that will be present on the scaffold at any given time. Ensure that the selected accessories can comfortably support this weight to prevent accidents and maintain a secure working environment.
3. Determine the Type of Work Being Done:
Each construction project involves a unique set of tasks, and the type of work being done plays a pivotal role in accessory selection. Whether you're engaged in painting, plastering, electrical work, or any other specialised activity, tailor your choice of accessories to meet the specific demands of the job. This may involve selecting specialised platforms, guardrails, or brackets designed for the type of work being performed.
4. Check Safety Standards:
Compliance with safety standards is non-negotiable in the construction industry. Before finalising your choice of scaffolding accessories, ensure that they meet or exceed industry safety standards and regulations. Verify that the accessories comply with regional or national safety codes, as this step is essential in minimising the risk of accidents and creating a secure working environment.
5. Choose Quality Accessories:
Investing in high-quality scaffolding accessories is an investment in the success of your construction project. Quality accessories not only enhance safety but also contribute to the overall durability and stability of the scaffold. Look for accessories made from robust materials, featuring secure locking mechanisms, and backed by reputable manufacturers. While cost is a consideration, prioritise the long-term benefits of quality accessories over short-term savings.
Choosing the right scaffolding accessories is a strategic decision that can significantly impact the success of your construction project. By meticulously considering the height, weight capacity, type of work, safety standards, and prioritising quality, you pave the way for a safer, more efficient, and ultimately successful construction process. Take the time to make informed decisions at the outset, and your project will benefit from a foundation of safety and stability.

Investing in Bonds: A Comprehensive Guide | Proinvest Ideas
Introduction
When it comes to building a well-diversified investment portfolio, bonds are an essential asset class to consider. They offer a level of stability and income that can balance the higher risks associated with stocks. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the world of bonds, why they are a valuable addition to your investment strategy, the different types of bonds available, how to invest in them, and the associated risks and rewards. Investing in Bonds
What Are Bonds?
Bonds are debt securities issued by governments, municipalities, corporations, or other entities to raise capital. When you invest in a bond, you essentially lend money to the issuer in exchange for periodic interest payments and the return of the bond’s face value (principal) when it matures. Bonds are often considered a safer investment compared to stocks because they typically offer a fixed interest rate and have a defined maturity date.
Why Invest in Bonds?
Income Generation: Bonds provide a steady stream of interest income, making them an attractive option for income-focused investors, retirees, and those looking for consistent cash flow.
Diversification: Bonds can help diversify your portfolio and reduce overall risk. They often move inversely to stocks, meaning they can offset losses in your equity holdings during market downturns.
Preservation of Capital: High-quality bonds, particularly those issued by stable governments or blue-chip corporations, are generally considered low-risk investments. They offer a higher level of capital preservation compared to stocks.
Predictable Returns: Bonds typically offer fixed interest payments at regular intervals, providing investors with predictable returns.
Types of Bonds
There are several types of bonds available for investors. Here are some of the most common:
Government Bonds: Issued by national governments, these are often considered the safest bonds. In the United States, they’re called Treasury Bonds, Notes, and Bills.
Corporate Bonds: Issued by corporations to raise capital, they come in various risk categories, with higher yields for riskier bonds.
Municipal Bonds: Issued by state and local governments, these bonds are often tax-exempt, making them attractive to investors in high tax brackets.
Convertible Bonds: These bonds can be converted into a predetermined number of common stock shares at a specified time.
Zero-Coupon Bonds: These bonds don’t pay periodic interest but are sold at a significant discount to their face value and redeemed at face value upon maturity.
High-Yield (Junk) Bonds: Issued by less creditworthy entities, these bonds offer higher yields to compensate for the increased risk.
Foreign Bonds: Issued by foreign governments or corporations, they carry currency risk but can offer diversification benefits.
How to Invest in Bonds
Investing in bonds can be done through various avenues, depending on your preferences and financial goals:
Individual Bonds: You can purchase bonds directly from the issuer, usually through a broker or financial institution. This method allows you to build a customized bond portfolio.
Bond Funds: Bond mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) pool investors’ money to buy a diversified portfolio of bonds. This is a convenient option for those seeking diversification without managing individual bonds.
Bond Ladders: This strategy involves purchasing bonds with staggered maturities to create a stream of income and manage interest rate risk.
Robo-Advisors: Some automated investment platforms offer bond portfolios tailored to your risk tolerance and financial goals.
Assessing Risks and Rewards
Investing in bonds comes with its own set of risks and rewards that investors should carefully consider:
Rewards:
Income Stream: Bonds provide a regular income stream through interest payments.
Capital Preservation: High-quality bonds are generally considered low-risk investments, helping protect your capital.
Diversification: Bonds can help diversify your portfolio, reducing overall risk.
Risks:
Interest Rate Risk: When interest rates rise, the value of existing bonds may decrease. Conversely, falling rates can increase bond prices.
Credit Risk: Bonds from lower-rated issuers (e.g., high-yield bonds) carry a higher risk of default.
Inflation Risk: Inflation erodes the purchasing power of fixed interest payments, potentially reducing the real return on bonds.
Liquidity Risk: Some bonds may have limited liquidity, making it challenging to sell them quickly without significant price concessions.
Building a Bond Portfolio
Constructing a diversified bond portfolio is essential for managing risk and achieving your financial goals. Here are some tips for building a well-balanced bond portfolio:
Diversify by Type: Include a mix of government, corporate, municipal, and other bond types to spread risk.
Consider Maturity Dates: Invest in bonds with varying maturities to create a “laddered” portfolio that balances income generation and interest rate risk.
Assess Credit Quality: Balance higher-yield, higher-risk bonds with those of higher credit quality to manage credit risk.
Stay Informed: Keep abreast of economic and market developments that may affect your bond portfolio, especially changes in interest rates.
Conclusion
Investing in bonds is a fundamental component of a well-rounded investment strategy. Bonds offer stability, income, and diversification benefits that can help you achieve your financial goals while managing risk. Whether you choose to invest in individual bonds, bond funds, or other vehicles, it’s essential to understand the types of bonds available, assess the associated risks and rewards, and construct a diversified bond portfolio that aligns with your investment objectives. By incorporating bonds into your investment strategy, you can build a more resilient and balanced portfolio for a secure financial future.

5. Stability and Resilience in Pricing
Historical data underlines the inherent resilience of gold prices. Instances of protracted price declines are eclipsed by robust rebounds, particularly during periods of financial tumult. This resilience underscores gold's reputation as a haven, thereby contributing to its long-term price stability.
6. Seamless Intergenerational Wealth Transfer
Gold investments are imprinted with a venerable tradition in India—namely, the bequeathment of wealth to successive generations. This cherished custom, often manifested during significant life milestones like weddings, reinforces gold's enduring legacy as a cherished asset.
7. Collateral for Loans
Physical gold assets inherently possess liquidity, rendering them a viable choice for collateral when seeking prompt loans from reputable financial institutions and banks.
8. Diversification for Balanced Portfolios
Notwithstanding the enticement of returns proffered by stock markets and real estate, they entail notable long-term risks. Integrating gold into an investment portfolio can effectively diversify risk, capitalizing on its proclivity for stability in pricing.
9. Assurance of Secure Investments
Comparative scrutiny of historical rates underscores the enduring security proffered by gold investments for the future. Their ability to sustain value in the market over protracted periods stands as a testament to their reliability.
10. Long-term Value Preservation
Unlike other assets susceptible to depreciation over time, gold assets exhibit unwavering resilience. Their value remains impervious to the ravages of age, ensuring favorable returns and enduring financial security.
For those venturing into the realm of investment, personalized gold and silver coins from esteemed sellers like Rahul Refinery assure transparency, bolstered by NABL certifications and other industry endorsements. Leveraging avant-garde Swiss technology, our products epitomize excellence. Set forth on the journey of acquiring customized coins for personal or corporate aims by initiating your order with us.

Why The Renewable Energy Sector Growth Is Accelerating
Tumblr media
Energy derived from natural sources that are produced faster than its utilization is referred to as renewable energy. With the scarcity of natural resources in ratio to the worldly population the need for more efficient and natural fuel is the need of the hour. Energy can be produced through various mediums like solar, wind, water, and geothermal energy which fall under the renewable resources bracket.
Did you know, the earth’s temperature has risen ban average of 0.14° Fahrenheit (0.08° Celsius) per decade since 1880? The rate of warming since 1981 is more than twice as fast: 0.32° F (0.18° C) per decade.
(information source: https://www.climate.gov/news-features/understanding-climate/climate-change-global-temperature#:~:text=Earth's%20temperature%20has%20risen%20by,0.18%C2%B0%20C)%20per%20decade )
The above global warming crisis requires nations to channel energies towards lowering carbon emissions and hence the acceleration in renewable energy. From 2023 to 2032, it is anticipated that the potential of non-hydro (solar and wind) renewable energy sources would expand threefold. Nearly a third of the world’s total energy production by 2032 could originate from non-hydro renewable sources. The growth of solar and wind power generation has been exponential.
Non-hydro Renewables Share of Global Electricity Generation (%)
Main factors responsible for the Renewable Energy sector upsurge
Declining costs towards generating renewable energy have been a fundamental contributing factor to the expansion of the renewable energy sector. Factually, since 2010, the cost of power produced onshore and offshore, using wind as a source of energy generation has lowered by almost 50%, whereas the price for energy generated by solar cell systems has reduced by 85%. These two renewable energy sources could now compete with fossil fuel electricity in pricing.
Because of economies of scale, competitive supply chains, and other considerations, renewable energy sources grow more economical as they’re implemented more extensively. These declining costs are not only engaging more adoption towards their use but also aim to make it available in every look and corner of the globe. In the past decade, for instance, the expense of installing solar power has massively declined by 34%, enabling the quantity of solar capacity deployed worldwide to expand. Due to the unique features of being flexible and regulated, technological advancements once innovated can be adopted in one location and can be immediately imitated in other areas maintaining standardization in renewable energy generation.
According to the latest report from the IEA, the global energy crisis is prompting a sharp acceleration in the deployment of renewable energy, with total capacity expansion assessed to nearly double in the following five years, overtaking coal as the primary source of electricity generation.
Countries are resorting increasingly toward renewable energy sources such as solar and wind to substantially reduce their dependency on foreign fossil fuels, whose rates have quadrupled, as a consequence of multiple issues that surround energy security prompted by Russia’s incursion into Ukraine. The capacity of renewable energy is presently projected to rise by 2 400 gigawatts (GW) between 2022 and 2027, as per Renewables 2022, the IEA’s most recent annual analysis on the industry. During that period, this amount would indeed be equivalent to China’s entire energy capacity.
Multiple aspects of the implementation of renewable energy are likewise self-reinforcing. It gets simpler to enlist further policy assistance and monetary support as renewable energy emerges well, boosts its political power, and draws more funds. The cost of investment has declined as financiers work in tandem with the most prominent engineering consultancy not only to gain expert insights into the technicalities but also addresses project risks harmoniously.
Renewable energy sector synopsis:
As the energy revolution accelerates, we envisage seeing a rise in investments in renewable energy. There will undoubtedly be significant potential for renewables businesses as investments soar, notably for those functioning along the supply chain of solar and wind power. The production of solar power modules, cells, inverters, wafers, and tracking systems as well as the development and management of wind and solar power plant projects and assets all have the potential to benefit. We expect that these firms will eventually make the power sector more sustainable, providing beneficial investment possibilities in the process.

By CALVIN WOODWARD, ELLEN KNICKMEYER and DAVID RISING
September 10, 2021 GMT
In the ghastly rubble of ground zero’s fallen towers 20 years ago, Hour Zero arrived, a chance to start anew.
World affairs reordered abruptly on that morning of blue skies, black ash, fire and death.
In Iran, chants of “death to America” quickly gave way to candlelight vigils to mourn the American dead. Vladimir Putin weighed in with substantive help as the U.S. prepared to go to war in Russia’s region of influence.
Libya’s Moammar Gadhafi, a murderous dictator with a poetic streak, spoke of the “human duty” to be with Americans after “these horrifying and awesome events, which are bound to awaken human conscience.”
From the first terrible moments, America’s longstanding allies were joined by longtime enemies in that singularly galvanizing instant. No nation with global standing was cheering the stateless terrorists vowing to conquer capitalism and democracy. How rare is that?
Too rare to last, it turned out.
___
Civilizations have their allegories for rebirth in times of devastation. A global favorite is that of the phoenix, a magical and magnificent bird, rising from ashes. In the hellscape of Germany at the end of World War II, it was the concept of Hour Zero, or Stunde Null, that offered the opportunity to start anew.
For the U.S., the zero hour of Sept. 11, 2001, meant a chance to reshape its place in the post-Cold War world from a high perch of influence and goodwill as it entered the new millennium. This was only a decade after the collapse of the Soviet Union left America with both the moral authority and the financial and military muscle to be unquestionably the lone superpower.
Those advantages were soon squandered. Instead of a new order, 9/11 fueled 20 years of war abroad. In the U.S., it gave rise to the angry, aggrieved, self-proclaimed patriot, and heightened surveillance and suspicion in the name of common defense.
It opened an era of deference to the armed forces as lawmakers pulled back on oversight and let presidents give primacy to the military over law enforcement in the fight against terrorism. And it sparked anti-immigrant sentiment, primarily directed at Muslim countries, that lingers today.
A war of necessity — in the eyes of most of the world — in Afghanistan was followed two years later by a war of choice as the U.S. invaded Iraq on false claims that Saddam Hussein was hiding weapons of mass destruction. President George W. Bush labeled Iran, Iraq and North Korea an “axis of evil.”
Thus opened the deep, deadly mineshaft of “forever wars.” There were convulsions throughout the Middle East, and U.S. foreign policy — for half a century a force for ballast — instead gave way to a head-snapping change in approaches in foreign policy from Bush to Obama to Trump. With that came waning trust in America’s leadership and reliability.
Other parts of the world were not immune. Far-right populist movements coursed through Europe. Britain voted to break away from the European Union. And China steadily ascended in the global pecking order.
President Joe Biden is trying to restore trust in the belief of a steady hand from the U.S. but there is no easy path. He is ending war, but what comes next?
In Afghanistan in August, the Taliban seized control with menacing swiftness as the Afghan government and security forces that the United States and its allies had spent two decades trying to build collapsed. No steady hand was evident from the U.S. in the harried, disorganized evacuation of Afghans desperately trying to flee the country in the first weeks of the Taliban’s re-established rule.
Allies whose troops had fought and died in the U.S-led war in Afghanistan expressed dismay at Biden’s management of the U.S. withdrawal, under a deal President Donald Trump had struck with the Taliban.
THE ‘HOMELAND’
In the United States, the Sept. 11 attacks set loose a torrent of rage.
In shock from the assault, a swath of American society embraced the us vs. them binary outlook articulated by Bush — “Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists” — and has never let go of it.
You could hear it in the country songs and talk radio, and during presidential campaigns, offering the balm of a bloodlust cry for revenge. “We’ll put a boot in your ass, it’s the American way,” Toby Keith promised America’s enemies in one of the most popular of those songs in 2002.
Americans stuck flags in yards and on the back of trucks. Factionalism hardened inside America, in school board fights, on Facebook posts, and in national politics, so that opposing views were treated as propaganda from mortal enemies. The concept of enemy also evolved, from not simply the terrorist but also to the immigrant, or the conflation of the terrorist as immigrant trying to cross the border.
The patriot under threat became a personal and political identity in the United States. Fifteen years later, Trump harnessed it to help him win the presidency.
THE OTHERING
In the week after the attacks, Bush demanded of Americans that they know “Islam is peace” and that the attacks were a perversion of that religion. He told the country that American Muslims are us, not them, even as mosques came under surveillance and Arabs coming to the U.S. to take their kids to Disneyland or go to school risked being detained for questioning.
For Trump, in contrast, everything was always about them, the outsiders.
In the birther lie Trump promoted before his presidency, Barack Obama was an outsider. In Trump’s campaigns and administration, Muslims and immigrants were outsiders. The “China virus” was a foreign interloper, too.
Overseas, deadly attacks by Islamic extremists, like the 2004 bombing of Madrid trains that killed nearly 200 people and the 2005 attack on London’s transportation system that killed more than 50, hardened attitudes in Europe as well.
By 2015, as the Islamic State group captured wide areas of Iraq and pushed deep into Syria, the number of refugees increased dramatically, with more than 1 million migrants, primarily from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq, entering Europe that year alone.
The year was bracketed by attacks in France on the Charlie Hebdo magazine staff in January after it published cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, and on the Bataclan theater and other Paris locations in November, reinforcing the angst then gripping the continent.
Already growing in support, far-right parties were able to capitalize on the fears to establish themselves as part of the European mainstream. They remain represented in many European parliaments, even as the flow of immigrants has slowed dramatically and most concerns have proved unfounded.
THE UNRAVELING
Dozens of countries joined or endorsed the NATO coalition fighting in Afghanistan. Russia acquiesced to NATO troops in Central Asia for the first time and provided logistical support. Never before had NATO invoked Article 5 of its charter that an attack against one member was an attack against all.
But in 2003, the U.S. and Britain were practically alone in prosecuting the Iraq war. This time, millions worldwide marched in protest in the run-up to the invasion. World opinion of the United States turned sharply negative.
In June 2003, after the invasion had swiftly ousted Saddam and dismantled the Iraqi army and security forces, a Pew Research poll found a widening rift between Americans and Western Europeans and reported that “the bottom has fallen out of support for America in most of the Muslim world.” Most South Koreans, half of Brazilians and plenty more people outside the Islamic world agreed.
And this was when the war was going well, before the world saw cruel images from Abu Ghraib prison, learned all that it knows now about CIA black op sites, waterboarding, years of Guantanamo Bay detention without charges or trials — and before the rise of the brutal Islamic State.
By 2007, when the U.S. set up the Africa Command to counter terrorism and the rising influence of China and Russia on the continent, African countries did not want to host it. It operates from Stuttgart, Germany.
THE SUCCESSES
Over the two decades, a succession of U.S. presidents scored important achievements in shoring up security, and so far U.S. territory has remained safe from more international terrorism anywhere on the scale of 9/11.
Globally, U.S.-led forces weakened al-Qaida, which has failed to launch a major attack on the West since 2005. The Iraq invasion rid that country and region of a murderous dictator in Saddam.
Yet strategically, eliminating him did just what Arab leaders warned Bush it would do: It strengthened Saddam’s main rival, Iran, threatening U.S. objectives and partners.
Deadly chaos soon followed in Iraq. The Bush administration, in its nation-building haste, failed to plan for keeping order, leaving Islamist extremists and rival militias to fight for dominance in the security vacuum.
The overthrow of Saddam served both to inspire and limit public support for Arab Spring uprisings a few years later. For if the U.S. showed people in the Middle East that strongmen can be toppled, the insurgency demonstrated that what comes next may not be a season of renewal.
Authoritarian regimes in the Middle East pointed to the post-Saddam era as an argument for their own survival.
The U.S.-led wars in Afghanistan and Iraq killed more than 7,000 American military men and women, more than 1,000 from the allied forces, many tens of thousands of members of Afghan and Iraqi security forces, and many hundreds of thousands of civilians, according to Brown University’s Costs of War project. Costs, including tending the wars’ unusually high number of disabled vets, are expected to top $6 trillion.
For the U.S., the presidencies since Bush’s wars have been marked by an effort — not always consistent, not always successful — to pull back the military from the conflicts of the Middle East and Central Asia.
The perception of a U.S. retreat has allowed Russia and China to gain influence in the regions, and left U.S. allies struggling to understand Washington’s place in the world. The notion that 9/11 would create an enduring unity of interest to combat terrorism collided with rising nationalism and a U.S. president, Trump, who spoke disdainfully of the NATO allies that in 2001 had rallied to America’s cause.
Even before Trump, Obama surprised allies and enemies alike when he stepped back abruptly from the U.S. role of world cop. Obama geared up for, then called off, a strike on Syrian President Bashar Assad for using chemical weapons against his people.
“Terrible things happen across the globe, and it is beyond our means to right every wrong,” Obama said on Sept. 11, 2013.
THE NEWISH ORDER
The legacies of 9/11 ripple both in obvious and unusual ways.
Most directly, millions of people in the U.S. and Europe go about their public business under the constant gaze of security cameras while other surveillance tools scoop up private communications. The government layered post-9/11 bureaucracies on to law enforcement to support the expansive security apparatus.
Militarization is more evident now, from large cities to small towns that now own military vehicles and weapons that seem well out of proportion to any terrorist threat. Government offices have become fortifications and airports a security maze.
But as profound an event as 9/11 was, its immediate effect on how the world has been ordered was temporary and largely undone by domestic political forces, a global economic downturn and now a lethal pandemic.
The awakening of human conscience predicted by Gadhafi didn’t last. Gadhafi didn’t last.
Osama bin Laden has been dead for a decade. Saddam was hanged in 2006. The forever wars — the Afghanistan one being the longest in U.S. history — now are over or ending. The days of Russia tactically enabling the U.S., and China not standing in the way, petered out. Only the phoenix lasts.

Season 9, Mission 14: Fort Knox
Tour group
~
JANINE DE LUCA: All right Runner Five, Mr. Yao. There is only audio surveillance in this room and I have muffled the microphones. We can talk freely.
SAM YAO: I really don't like this, Janine. I mean, okay, they did let us into Van Ark's mystery base, but then they stuck us in this tiny room, insisted we take medical exams. Peter and Maryam still aren't back from the med bay. I can't believe we let them just inject us with tracking devices.
JANINE DE LUCA: We had no choice, Mr. Yao. It was take the subcutaneous trackers or leave Red Scorpion Base. General Bakari claimed he would meet us on arrival, but so far we have only been escorted by soldiers. The security here is intense. Barbed wire fencing, perimeter guard towers, patrols in unmarked uniforms. If our operation goes wrong, escape will not be... [door creaks open] Someone's approaching. [loudly] Which is why they'd better pay well for this job! Don't you agree, Sven?
SAM YAO: Uh... yeah. Yes. Mercenaries, us. Money, ooh, we want it.
GENERAL BAKARI: You can relax. I've relieved the guards in this section, shut down the cameras.
JANINE DE LUCA: General Bakari, there are others in our team -
GENERAL BAKARI: - still in the medical bay. We can't wait. The trackers you've received are a new security provision powered by bioelectric energy. They didn't tell you this, but it takes about 40 minutes for a tracker to stabilize in its new host. We've got that long before your every movement is monitored. That's just enough time. [drops bag on the floor] There are maintenance uniforms in the duffel bag. Put them on.
JANINE DE LUCA: General -
GENERAL BAKARI: I trust you weren't counting on a sentimental reunion, De Luca? There's a mission at hand. Red Scorpion Base has a secret you're going to help me liberate. All of you, out into the corridor. No time to dawdle.
~
SAM YAO: This place is just a maze of metal hallways, isn't it? Shh. Hey, do you guys hear that?
[distant metallic footsteps]
GENERAL BAKARI: A patrol coming from the intersection ahead. Duck into that store room, quick. [cloth rustles, footsteps pass] They've passed. Those maintenance uniforms will help at a distance, but the patrols here know all the authorized faces. Come on, this way. Speaking of faces, it's Runner Five, isn't it? You gave me this gammy leg. My own stupid mistake, I admit, chasing you on that motorcycle.
JANINE DE LUCA: Perhaps if you had not sided with Prime Minister Hakkinen, General, you might have avoided injury.
GENERAL BAKARI: Is that reproach I hear, De Luca? You were always so quick to judge. Sigrid was a monster, but with impressive ambition. It seemed folly to oppose her, so i toed the party line loudly when she was listening. Soldiers served their country, after all. I hear there's a thief in charge these days. Not sure your vote turned out much more righteous than mine.
SAM YAO: Hey!
JANINE DE LUCA: Don't let him needle you, Mr. Yao. The base, General. It is in excellent condition, especially given we have seen evidence it predates Z-Day.
GENERAL BAKARI: Very good, De Luca. Yes, Red Scorpion Base has been here for many years. Once we get to the next intersection, you'll see where it came from. Where's Tom, Janine? I was sure he'd be with your team.
JANINE DE LUCA: Tom... Tom was killed in action some time ago.
GENERAL BAKARI: Unfortunate. He had a weak heart, that boy. I saw it every day I sheltered you two after your parents passed. Thought I taught you to watch out for each other!
I'm not authorized for this part of the base. I've stolen passes, but if we're caught here, we will be shot. Do you see the turrets bracketing the door ahead? Machine gun emplacements, automated. Look at the symbol on the turret mountings below each gun barrel.
SAM YAO: Those are stars and stripes. Flags, American flags.
[door rattles open]
GENERAL BAKARI: And past the door, a flag painted on the wall. They're not allowed to fly one outside. Red Scorpion Base was established by the American military 20 years before Z-Day. Black ops research, top secret, and they're still very much running it today. Quickly, all of you, there are a lot more patrols in the next section. Follow the corridor branch left, on the double.
~
SAM YAO: Look, Five, by the water cooler. That's the portrait of the last US president. God, this is crazy. There's still a US military and they're hanging around a base in Tunisia!
JANINE DE LUCA: A base somehow connected to Ernest Van Ark and V-type fungus.
GENERAL BAKARI: You already know about the local fungus, eh? The US military heard rumors of it decades before Z-Day, whispers unearthed by archaeologists in North Africa. They thought it had martial potential, set up a base here to dig for it. They hit on caves of the stuff underground. There's an archive room on our way. I'll show you what they found.
SAM YAO: Wow! Janine, look! Down the corridor to the right, that looks like the war room from, well, every movie with a war room ever. Ah, there must be a hundred screens in there.
JANINE DE LUCA: All cycling through images of landmarks. The Brandenburg Gate, Times Square full of zombies, a toppled Eiffel Tower. General, are these images current? What reach does this army have?
GENERAL BAKARI: Honestly, the US isn't what it was, but the man in charge of Red Scorpion Base likes to keep eyes everywhere. [drones whir] Come on, there are surveillance drones in these corridors. I hear some coming. Forward.
SAM YAO: [whispers] Likes to keep his eyes everywhere? Yeah, yeah, that sounds like Van Ark, doesn't it, Five? If the Americans are running Red Scorpion Base, is he backed by their army? The others are getting ahead. We'd best speed up.
~
[door rattles open]
GENERAL BAKARI: We're in the main research annex deep underground. This is an archive room, oldest on Red Scorpion Base. If you want to know about the fungus, this is the place.
SAM YAO: But it's just a room full of dusty filing cabinets. Oh, and Polaroid pictures of scientists stuck up on the wall. Scientists in a cavern full of black ash.
GENERAL BAKARI: Certain branches under the Department of Defense saw huge promise in the fungus. They dreamed of perfecting a symbiosis to make humans faster, better, stronger. The early experiments went poorly. People died. The decision was made to destroy the fungus after it nearly escaped containment, every trace burned away.
JANINE DE LUCA: General, the glass tank in that corner, the blackened lump inside...
GENERAL BAKARI: A relic. This room is a memorial. The old research data is all locked away. The lump is a museum piece, scorched rock from a once red cave, long dead now.
JANINE DE LUCA: Then... the fungus is not why you summoned us?
GENERAL BAKARI: Not at all, De Luca, though not a bad guess. What I have for you is much more important. Come along through the far door. Incidentally, you see the old photo on the left, the one showing a team in bulky armor scouring rocks with flamethrowers? They still call Red Scorpion’s emergency response the fire team. These days, they wear powered exoskeletons, flamethrowers integrated. They're what comes for us if we make a mistake. We're short on time. Go.
~
SAM YAO: Loads of fancy computers in here, Five. Must be in a sciency bit.
GENERAL BAKARI: Ancillary data storage. From here, we can access files from the Red Scorpion's latter day experiments. Listen carefully, De Luca. The base contracted your team on my recommendation. Since Z-Day, Red Scorpion's been short-handed. They sometimes recruit outside personnel. Three months ago, one of my aides went MIA. Any deserter is viewed as an unacceptable security risk.
SAM YAO: Did you kill him?
GENERAL BAKARI: Fellow took a bad fall. I disposed of the body, arranged evidence of his flight to the mountains, suggested we needed help to locate him. Obviously, no one's ever going to find him outside, and our security head is getting desperate. Once she briefs you, she'll send you into the mountains to hunt down the deserter. There, you'll divert to designated coordinates. You'll find buried parts of a vehicle I've had hidden. Assemble it and escape.
JANINE DE LUCA: You are not coming with us, General?
GENERAL BAKARI: I'm rarely allowed off the base, and I don't intend to return to the UK to stand trial. I know you're thinking it, De Luca.
JANINE DE LUCA: You betrayed your nation. It would be my duty.
GENERAL BAKARI: And you always loved duty. As a child, you used to turn your night light out on principle. [computer beeps] Give me a minute with the computer. I'll get what you're here for.
SAM YAO: Um, which is what, exactly?
GENERAL BAKARI: Research from Red Scorpion Base, something that can change the future. The file I'm giving you is encrypted, I can't open it. Did you bring a computer expert?
SAM YAO: Sort of. We, um, lost our equipment, though.
GENERAL BAKARI: The file is too big to transmit without powerful equipment. If you were able to decrypt it, you might have been able to send key details out. As it is, you'll need to get this thumb drive to the UK intact. If anyone suspects you're smuggling data off the base, you're dead, understand?
JANINE DE LUCA: General, if we leave you here -
GENERAL BAKARI: I'll be fine, so long as the operation succeeds. Humanity, kin, and hope, De Luca. That's what this is for. Do not let me down. The head of security just pinged me. The rest of your team is done in the medical center. She wants to brief you all, stat. We need to get back. There's one more thing I need to give you. Through the door on the right. The doctors should be on their break. This way, run!
~
JANINE DE LUCA: General, is this a hospital ward?
GENERAL BAKARI: It's an emergency care area. Ah, here it is. Five, give me your arm. My research indicates you'll be the best subject for this.
SAM YAO: Wait, what-what are you doing? You can't just inject strange substances into people!
GENERAL BAKARI: The bio data in the injection is a crucial component of the information in the files. The only way to transport it is inside a living host.
JANINE DE LUCA: It's long past time you explained exactly what this information is, General.
GENERAL BAKARI: It's a cure, Janine.
SAM YAO: For what?
GENERAL BAKARI: For everything. Every ailment that plagues humanity, every virus, every infection. A panacea.
JANINE DE LUCA: That's impossible.
GENERAL BAKARI: No. It may take years, even generations to formulate a usable vaccine, but the germ of it is here. The zombie plague has brought such pain to humanity. I accept I played my part in it. But this data, the antibodies in Five's blood, and the files on that drive, they may be the one worthwhile thing to come out of all that death.
JANINE DE LUCA: Then I leave the decision to you, Five. Very well. Proceed, General.
SAM YAO: I'm just gonna, um, not be here watching that. Injections always make me feel queasy.
GENERAL BAKARI: Your trust will be repaid, Janine, I promise you.
JANINE DE LUCA: I hope so.
SAM YAO: Oh my God. Janine, Five, over here! There's a door with a little porthole. On the other side, it's-it's Van Ark! He's unconscious, hooked up to, well, it's like a giant dialysis machine. Looks like it's draining him.
GENERAL BAKARI: I was saving him until last. Good bait to get you here, but if I explained too soon, you'd only get distracted.
JANINE DE LUCA: Is Van Ark running the research department? What are the Americans giving him through those tubes?
GENERAL BAKARI: Van Ark running the place? [laughs] Not at all. The fellow at the top, no one ever sees. Nasty piece of work by all accounts. But Van Ark here, he isn't in charge of anything. Van Ark is one of the experiments.

Another anti-mask shithead screws up everyone else’s week on the Hill
Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) has tested positive for coronavirus after refusing to wear a mask while in the Capitol.
The lawmaker was set to travel with President Donald Trump to Texas Wednesday, but his positive result was caught in the pre-screening process. Gohmert said last month that he would not wear a mask around the Capitol because he was being regularly tested for the virus.
“[I]f I get it,” he told CNN in June, “you’ll never see me without a mask.”
Gohmert, who was in attendance at Tuesday’s House Judiciary Committee hearing with Attorney General William Barr, is the seventh representative to contract the virus. He was spotted without a mask on Tuesday speaking with Barr within an arm’s length prior to the hearing. Barr will be tested today for coronavirus following Gohmert’s positive result.
Following his positive test result, Gohmert didn’t immediately isolate and self-quarantine, as health experts advise. He reportedly returned to his office, saying he wanted to inform his staffers of the test result in person rather than having them learn from news reports. Several staffers were already in the process of leaving by the time he arrived.[...]
He is one of a cluster of Republican members of Congress who have refused to wear masks, despite party leaders including Sens. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) wearing them around the Capitol. Several Republican representatives were chastised during the Barr hearing Tuesday for not wearing masks in the hearing room.
Okay, my turn:
According to Fox News, Gohmert (who they very gingerly state “has been prone not to wear a mask around Capitol Hill “, and not the more accurate “has been prone to be a belligerent asshole when questioned on the topic”) was scheduled to be on Air Force One today with President Trump for another campaign fundraising fund.
At 66, Gohmert is inside the red-alert age bracket where the mortality rate has always been a little bit higher. He’s also a Texas Republican, a group which helped found the GOP Death Cult that has openly suggested more of us should be willing to die so that others can start making money again.
When the House Democrats proposed proxy voting in May to cut down on the infection risk among members, Gohmert’s bellicose response from the House floor was a mix of Constitutional originalism and “come on, don’t be a pussy” chest thumping, invoking (of course) the pandemic economy while doing so. So on that level, you can say that he literally asked for this.
And then there’s the Trump-led “magical thinking” wing of the party, the idea that wishing can just make all of this go away overnight. Gohmert definitely earned his stripes as an early member of that movement during a live TV interview in April where he plugged a “magic powder” he claimed was being used in Germany, one which allegedly killed the coronavirus on contact and keeps killing it for up to 14 days. You walk through a tent misted in this stuff and boom, invincibility!
There were a few problems with this story, the first being that when PolitiFact pressed Gohmert for even the most basic details about what the hell he was talking about, he didn’t answer their calls.
The second was that this “Germany” place he said it came from? Turns out it’s a real country with people who can confirm or deny bullshit fairy tales.  Dr. Jörn Wegner, a spokesman for Deutsche Krankenhausgesellschaft, or the German Hospital Association, didn’t waste words: "What your congressman said is absolute nonsense. There are no such tents and there’s no powder or magical cure." But you know how it is. Anything is possible in your imagination. Just don’t try to requisition a fantasy from a medical supply company.
In spite of all of the above, here’s hoping that Gohmert makes it through this. And here’s hoping that he gets sent home at the end of his current term so the folks back home can give him shit about what type of magic powder he was on when he came up with that yarn.
Also added to the infected column in the past week: Trump national security adviser Robert O’Brien. Trump claimed on Monday to have not seen him lately, which, all things considered, is one of the few things he’s ever said that I can believe without hesitation.

The Basics of Bond Investing Long-Term
Introduction Investing in bonds can be a smart long-term strategy for individuals looking to diversify their investment portfolios and generate steady income. Bonds are debt securities issued by governments, municipalities, and corporations to raise capital. In this blog post, we will explore the basics of bond investing for the long term, including the benefits, risks, and key considerations. The Benefits of Bond Investing Bond investing offers several advantages for long-term investors: - Steady Income: Bonds pay regular interest payments, known as coupon payments, which provide investors with a steady income stream. - Capital Preservation: Bonds are generally considered less volatile than stocks, making them a more conservative investment option for preserving capital. - Diversification: Including bonds in an investment portfolio can help diversify risk and reduce overall portfolio volatility. - Predictable Returns: Bonds have fixed maturity dates, allowing investors to plan for future cash flows and estimate returns. Risks and Considerations While bond investing offers many benefits, it is important to be aware of the risks involved: - Interest Rate Risk: Bond prices are inversely related to interest rates. When interest rates rise, bond prices fall, and vice versa. Long-term bond investors should be prepared for potential fluctuations in bond prices. - Credit Risk: Bonds issued by entities with lower credit ratings carry a higher risk of default. Investors should carefully assess the creditworthiness of the bond issuer before investing. - Inflation Risk: Inflation erodes the purchasing power of future bond income. Long-term investors should consider the potential impact of inflation on their bond investments. - Liquidity Risk: Some bonds may have limited liquidity, making it difficult to sell them at a desired price. Investors should be aware of the liquidity of the bonds they choose to invest in. Types of Bonds There are various types of bonds available for long-term investors: - Government Bonds: Issued by national governments, these bonds are generally considered low-risk and offer stable returns. - Municipal Bonds: Issued by local governments or municipalities, these bonds are often tax-exempt and can be attractive for investors in higher tax brackets. - Corporate Bonds: Issued by corporations, these bonds offer higher yields but carry higher credit risk compared to government or municipal bonds. - Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS): These bonds are designed to protect investors against inflation by adjusting the principal value based on changes in the Consumer Price Index. Long-Term Bond Investing Strategies Here are some strategies to consider when investing in bonds for the long term: - Ladder Strategy: This strategy involves diversifying investments across bonds with different maturity dates. By spreading investments, investors can mitigate the risk of interest rate fluctuations. - Buy and Hold: Investors can choose to buy individual bonds and hold them until maturity, ensuring a predictable stream of income. - Bond Funds: Investing in bond mutual funds or exchange-traded funds (ETFs) allows investors to gain exposure to a diversified portfolio of bonds managed by professionals. Conclusion Bond investing can be a valuable long-term investment strategy for those seeking steady income and capital preservation. By understanding the benefits, risks, and different types of bonds available, investors can make informed decisions and create a well-rounded investment portfolio. Remember to consult with a financial advisor to determine the best bond investment strategy based on your individual financial goals and risk tolerance. Read the full article

All is fair in Love & War - 15
Pairing: Loki x reader Content: Plotting, pining, maybe don’t imagine things too well if you’re afraid of heights. Some people being ass-holes. Some death and gore. A tad of panic (though no disco, sorry). Also! There will be some dialog with bracket within the citation – this is to signify it’s spoken in a different language. A/N: I’ve taken the liberty of tagging people who seem to follow, but if you do/don’t want a tag pls let me know. It seems there might be some issues with tagging which I couldn’t fix via app. Checking it now on laptop, it seems fine, but let me know if there are still problems.
Tumblr media
15. Impatient
There is only one way in and out of king Gorm’s bed chamber. Officially. The door is guarded constantly by the only competent soldiers in the entire nation. This may have something to do with the comfort of their lives as well as that of their families because no other commoners, not even the servants, live as luxuriously or eat such fine meals. True, it is still grubby compared to anyone of noble blood, but if someone is granted the position as royal bodyguard, then his or her daily struggle is over. This of course results in two things. One is the mixed envy and disdain for whomever holds such a job. The other is your need to find a way past the guards or an altogether different way into the chambers.
That is why you find yourself dangling halfway out of a narrow window, trying to get the tri-hook securely attached to the balcony above. A clank sounds through the clammy night air, indicating that the thing at least has struck something, and as it and the rope does not begin a rapid descend towards you then you dare to breathe out a sigh of relief (it is the seventh attempt or more). Carefully, you pull the rope towards you until suddenly it stops. Carefully first. It seems to hold a light strain, so you put more of your weight behind it. Then more, and more, and eventually you are hanging free from the window.
A hissing voice come from within. “You test it, now you get back here!” Röskva reaches out to you, swinging you gently back into safety. “This no way for madama to behave!”
The young girl is endearing in her fury and you cannot help laughing a bit. “Well, then I should be fine doing it, shouldn’t I?”
“Shush! You want to be discovered?” Large, dark eyes have you pinned to the floor before she moves to look out of the window. Next moment she is back with a frown. “Now how you go get it back?”
“Relax, dear, that balcony is easily accessible from the corridor above which leads to the music room. No one would blame me for walking there.”
The girl is not quite convinced. “But at this hour?”
You manage to calm her down, but the Vanar is only satisfied once you are safely back in the guest chambers (rope and hook in hand).
What matters more. however, is that the little window with the balcony above is near identical to the layout by the king’s private sleeping quarters, so presuming you still know how to climb a rope there is now very little between you and a visit to Gorm. But what about the queen? At least the two have no children to inherit the throne, but the lady strikes you as the kind of wife that could become vengeful even without any sign of foul play. But I’m only going to have a look around.
Looking up from the array of lockpicks and other tools which you have been oiling, your eyes wander to the northern horizon. Somewhere out there is the one person who has managed to open your eyes and see the world for what it is. It was never you intention to let Loki have your heart, taking his in return, but here you are…and you will do anything in your power to keep him safe.
“Röskva?” There is a soft hum in response, and you continue in a broken attempt at Vanir. “(Jotun-king planning kill this king?)”
There is a rustle as the girl puts down the sewing she was working on, then the subdued sound of bare feet before she comes into view, taking a seat near the window. “(You know this.)”
“(He in danger if here.)”
“(Yes, madama.)” A deep frown is almost obscuring her eyes completely. “(What is it that you are plotting?)”
It is still harder to find the words than articulate the rolling R’s, but you plow on undeterred. “(Who become new ruler here?)”
“(There will be an –)“ she uses a word that carries little meaning to you until she explains it: election.
Of course, those eligible to vote would be the men of noble ancestry, but as for the candidates…they have to be approved by the heads of the dominant religions in Midgard, every commoner knows that the and priests, templars, and monks silently wants things to change for the better of the simple folk. Where else but to the gods have the people been able to turn to as things got worse for them? They have witnessed the suffering, tried to care for as many as possible while watching from first row how the court have gorged themselves.
“(Send my love word…he stay safe…I home soon.)”
…   LOKI’s PoV   …
Glass shards dance across the stone floor, capturing and refracting the light from the afternoon sun into a myriad of tiny rainbows, but the beauty of destruction is lost on Loki as he stares at the message in his shaking hand. Clearly, it is not written by [Y/N]. He would know her clumsy letters or runes anywhere. No this is writing is careful and tight to minimize waste of space, each word chosen carefully to be as precise as possible without revealing too much. This is in itself by no means alarming, as most of the messages about her are written by someone else, but the last words…
I fear she will take your role.
As much as the king of Jotunheim had wished to be more closely involved, his part of the scheme is but a limited one despite the importance of it. The old him would have taken it as an offense if anyone, anyone at all, would consider taking over such a task regardless of their reasons for it because that Loki only would be blinded by a destructive notion of inadequacy and dismissal. But this Loki (the son of Frigga, Odin, and Laufey) king of Jotunheim feels none of that. Instead, it is a cold fear of another’s potential suffering that is making his world spin and hands shake. No coherent thoughts form in his mind, and once they appear, they are twisted into grotesque nightmares. If she does and she is caught... the distress is causing the trembling hands to change hue. They will imprison her. A chill which not even the fire can overpower steals into the room. Or maybe kill her on the spot. Tendrils of ice spreads across the floor from where Loki stands, coiling around and up anything in their path, and the flames in the hearth shrink visibly. A knock on the door startles him.
“My king…Thor has arrived.” The servant sounds particularly timid.
What?! It takes a conscious effort to keep his voice level. “Show him to the throne room.”
Finally becoming aware of the surroundings, the king breathes deeply in an effort to shackle his emotions. As he watches skin return to a humane hue and the destruction fade, leaving small puddles on the floor, a thought so outlandishly rash it makes his chuckle occurs to him. And who better than to help carry out this approximation of a plan than Thor?
Striding into the hall, he finds Loki standing by the roaring fire. The red coat nearly reaches the floor but does nothing to hide the muscular arms folded across the brother’s broad chest wrapped in armour of gold inlaid silvery metal.
“Thor, what a delight to see you here!” The smile Loki has plastered on his face is not entire fake.
Electric blue eyes reflect the heat of the fire as they land upon Loki for a second before another voice answers. Kind, warm, and familiar. The brothers could go anywhere in any of the realms and still recognize Frigga through the noise of the rowdiest place even if she spoke in a whisper.
“My son, I need you to listen to me now more than ever.” Stepping into sight, she reaches out for the younger of her children. “We have received the same message as you. I know what you want to do.”
The king of Jotunheim stays rooted in place, watching her hands fall before speaking. “Oh, really?” It is futile to challenge her, because Loki is her son more than Odin’s, but he will not have anyone stand in his way. “And what, pray tell, are my plans?”
“Brother, do not act foolishly,” Thor interjects, his voice a reminder of his powers, “if you go to stop lady [Y/N], then you risk exposing her not to mention abandoning your kingdom to an uncertain fate. Is that what you want?”
Where Frigga’s words merely had annoyed Loki because he knows that she sees more than others (not like Heimdal does, of course), Thor’s words stokes a fire deep within. A flaming rage similar to the one that flared upon hearing the Midgardian’s crude insult in the tent less than a fortnight ago. And this time the Jotun is fully aware of the red that begins to fill his eyes, a sight that would make cowards of most (and does at least make Thor frown)…but Frigga steps forward to take the cold hands in her own.
“Please, listen to me. Let me show you what I have seen.”
After a nod, she drags him to a seat. He lets her place his palm on her forehead, even bends slightly so she can reach his, before in- and exhaling slowly to regain a semblance of calmness.
The dark hall around them falls away, leaving them in an emptiness of opportunities until he relents control to Frigga, and glimpses of unknown places appear with one common denominator: [Y/N]. The first scene shows her slip behind a painting in the dead of night when only the stars light the castle’s interior. Next, she reappears in what appears to be a bathroom by pushing a panel in the pink and white wall aside, then tiptoeing across smooth stone which change to a fluffy carpet. She stops at a fourposter bed decorated with gold and pink lace, but he cannot see what happens there, only hear the spine-chilling sigh a few moments later. Then the scene changes and [Y/N] is dangling from a rope, a familiar stubborn expression on the upturned face. Next moment she stands on a balcony, knife in hand. Suddenly it is day, the court of nobles mingling about the familiar shape are at an uproar, but at least she appears safe.
“This is what can be,” Frigga’s voice fills the void that has surrounded them, “it is to prefer over this…”
Loki’s form is leaning over Magni’s neck, urging the horse on at a dangerous speed. He arrives at a castle without any attempt at disguising who he is, who he really is, and alarms sound everywhere causing guards to barge into a darkened bedroom styled in rich reds and greens where an unassuming man sits up in bed with a start and a familiar figure is caught sneaking in through a balcony door armed with a dagger. The next scene shows her too, in the same room and with the same soldiers and (Loki guesses) the king…but the only one alive is the Jotun despite the blood soaking his clothing and the many injuries he has sustained. Crimson eyes flare in the dark as he rocks the lifeless form of the woman he loves.
In reality, it is not Loki who is rocking, but he who is being rocked. Frigga is holding her son almost like she did when he was young and upset, and of course Loki realises this in much the same way that he is highly aware that Thor is watching, or that he has to keep the Jotun powers in check to avoid the risk of hurting either of the Asgardians.
Breathing deeply, the hard clench of his fists steadies him. “None of those futures are certain.” He knows a bit of how Frigga’s gift works.
“That is true.” But the sadness in her eyes is not subdued when their eyes meet.
“I assume you have conferred with Heimdal.”
It is Thor who answers, relenting the information that the Watcher has seen nothing alarming at Sjöblik as of yet. The tone is clear, tough. Both he and Frigga are trying to get Loki to stay put, inferring that he will be to blame for any ill events that may happen. If [Y/N] is harmed because of me…the risk alone is to great, and the dread it brings is strong enough that for once the Jotun is permeated by a cold as intense as the winters in these lands. It threatens to paralyze him, suffocate him in his own apathy. Never before has Loki felt this powerless, and he hates it with a passion almost comparable to the intensity of his love for the one person he is being asked to abandon to fate.
“There must be somethi–“ he begins desperately before being interrupted.
“Not now.” Frigga shushes.
A heavy hand lands on Loki’s shoulder. “Do not worry, little brother. You have trained this maiden of your well! I think she may yet surprise us pleasantly.”
Unsurprisingly, Frigga has had the foresight not to leave her son alone in Utgard, and as a result, Thor has been having a blast challenging anyone to spar until Loki relents. Now they are circling each other in the snowy courtyard while almost every Jötun in the keep watches from the sidelines. Mjölnir is standing neatly in a corner as per usual when the brothers brawl simply to minimize the risk of collateral damage (though it obviously does not eliminate it), and Thor is using a mighty sword in its stead.
They know each other well, rarely falling for the feinting jabs or swings. In truth, neither of them expect to win a match like this by means of weapons and crude violence although each participant is more than capable of slaying the strongest of foes if it were a real battle. Loki has never favoured brawn, always being reminded of his lesser size by his father and anyone else not fond of the dark-haired child. And Thor? He has the strength and he may not be as bookishly intelligent as Loki, but the God of Thunder is far from stupid, especially when it comes to tactics.
The first real move comes in a powerful sweep with the sword, developing out of a seemingly harmless jab, and Loki has to flatten his back onto the compacted snow as the blade hums through the air inches above his nose.
“Ah! Close one, brother!” Thor has been pulled around by the momentum, leaving the master of the keep time to regain both footing and breath. “This is a fine weapon!”
Loki sends a handful of throwing blades towards the blond’s unprotected back. “It is traditional for the Jötun clans of the northern plains.”
Each slim knife is deflected by either vambraces or the weapon in question, making Thor grin proudly. Keep laughing, brother mine. Behind the Asgardian, the snow transform into ice while collapsing in on itself, readying to launch a crystalline missile towards the unsuspecting fighter. Not yet. Rolling to avoid a new stroke, Loki reaches the rack with weapons available throughout the sparring session and grabs his favourite longer ranged weapon: a smooth spear of dark wood with silver and gold threads inlaid along the shaft. The tip is nearly black with the exception of the same threads weaving in and out of each other.
“I was wondering if you would keep relying on your toothpicks.” Blue eyes shine with mirth, teeth gleam like snow in sunlight.
A few jabs and a sweeping arch for Thor’s feet has the guest positioned perfectly for the surprise hidden in the snow. “Not at all,” Loki smirks, “I just deemed it polite to let you stand a chance.”
Clenching a fist suddenly, the sorcerer fires the icy missile. As if in slow motion, he sees it burst from the snow with deadly precision and it would have hit true if Thor had not had the wits to throw himself awkwardly to the side, now it merely grazes the warrior, sending him spinning into the heaps of snow. By the time his face reappears, it is met with the gleaming tip of a spear less than an inch from the nose.
“Loki…one,” the champion smiles.
Thor smiles undeterred, eager to continue the game as though he were a puppy. “Thor nil. Smart fighting.”
…   READER’s PoV   …
“What d’you mean they dis’peared?!”
King Gorm’s rage is echoing through the halls, causing the servants to scurry on with their heads down and the nobles present to attempt carrying on with their conversations although with slightly shrill voices. Standing by a tall window of stained-glass mosaics, the distress makes you smile despite the fat drop of rain that have been falling nonstop the last couple of days.
An answer is given and appears to be unsatisfactory. “NO! I’ll no’ ‘ave it,” the monarch nearly screams, “don’t you come spurtin’ tha’ kinda nonsense! I ‘spect nuttin’ less than p’fection! I want them punished! ALL o’ them!”
“But my lord,” finally the distressed voice of the military advice can be heard, “the few that did return, dutifully and with proo–“
“ALL o’ them! You think I dunno see wha’ ‘tis? Huh?! Lettin’ their mates wander off like tha’?!”
A shiver runs down your spine that has nothing to do with pettiness or the shill of the damp air. Whatever has happened (probably a regiment opting to desert) will now cause innocent souls suffering simply because the king acts like a spoiled child. Someone should send him to the front. Have him live under the same conditions as the lowliest soldier. It is a futile wish, of course. No one here will suggest anything that can cost them their own safety. Maybe they just don’t care about others?
