It's September 25th, 📔 Comic Book Day. Whether you grew up glued to the pages of comic books, or you’ve never experienced the wonders that lie between their pages, Comic Book Day encourages you to get out and embrace this incredible story telling medium.
Comic books have existed in America since "The Adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck" arrived from 🇨🇭 Switzerland in 1837. The first standard-size standard-sized comic book, "Funnies on Parade," appeared in the early 20th century. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's creation of the superhero "Superman" turned comic books into a major industry in 1938 - one that's grown exponentially to encompass radio serials, TV and book series, movies, theme parks, board games, video games, apparel, merchandise, etc.
Parents have historically assigned the role of villain to comic books when it comes to what they want to see their children reading, but that’s all turning around. Enlightened parents have come to realize that comic books actually promote literacy in children, as they involve the reader in a complex negotiation of words and images, making logical sense of the narrative, and weaving the action together based on cues in the illustrations. Sounds like a superhero, not a villain, eh? ☮️ Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet

Today is National Comic Book Day!
Take a look at this artist’s book made with comics from our Special Collections. It was created by Swiss artist Dieter Roth (April 21, 1930 – June 5, 1998). Do you notice anything different about this book? Many large worm holes pierce the pages, playing on disruption and multiple readings.
Bok 3b und bok 3d : Rekonstruktion der im Verlag “Forlag ed.” Reykjavík 1961 erschienenen Bücher [Dieter Roth ; herausgegeben von Hj. Mayer und D. Rot]. Roth, Dieter, 1930-1998. Stuttgart : Hansjörg Mayer, 1974. ca. 550 p. : all ill. (some col.) ; 23 cm. German

"As long as I'm alive, I'll keep fighting --! I'll keep trying to find a way to beat you!..I won't quit. Not now! Not ever!" ~ #Spidergirl 59; When I was 12 this was the coolest line said in the history of ever. It's still holds up I think.. Also It's #nationalcomicbookday (Not to be confused with #fcbd in #may ) - Obviously #maydayparker and the Spider-Girl #comics mean a great deal to me. How can I not honor them before my birthday weekend. #makeminemayday #mc2universe #spidergirlcosplay #maydayparkercosplay #spiderverse #marvelcomicscosplay #982 #spiderversecosplay #spiderman #spidermancosplay #mayday #mayparker #mayparkercosplay https://www.instagram.com/p/CFkJ3Hajzai/?igshid=bgt655c1p24q

But . . . the car, though? The Hagley Library is observing National Comic Book Day today with the National Industrial Conference Board’s 1948 contribution to the genre, We Hit the Jackpot.
The NICB, a membership organization for corporations and the broader business community, was founded in 1916. Its founders were seeking a collective response to rising public criticism of businesses in the aftermath of high profile industrial disasters like the 1907 Monongah mining disaster, the 1909 Chicago Crib Disaster, and the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire.
They were also hoping to address growing tensions in the United States between labor and management, made evident by a rising tide of increasingly confrontational strikes like the citywide strike that shut down Philadelphia in 1910, the Bread and Roses strike of 1912, the Wheatland Hop Riots, Indianapolis streetcar strike, and Paterson silk strike of 1913, the Ludlow Massacre of 1914, and the recent Everett Massacre of 1916.
Tumblr media
By the time of the publication of We Hit the Jackpot, however, the NICB was, like most American business institutions, fully engaged in the ideological battles of the Cold War. This publication, released as a supplement to American Affairs, its quarterly journal, was intended to persuade readers of the ways in which American capitalism and free enterprise benefited workers and consumers. During a January 1950 distribution of the resource, American Affairs editor Garet Garret noted that:
“Whether or not the readers of American Affairs may be interested in [We Hit the Jackpot] either as entertainment or information is not the point. There has been much discussion of the value of the comic as a means of mass communication—that is to say, in this example, as a way to make employees of American industry more intelligently aware of what they live by and how the free voluntary system works for everybody. Other attempts to put the story in that form, for the eye, have not been always successful, owing perhaps to the puerility of the product. This is the best thing of its kind we have seen; where the distribution of it has been followed by analysis of response, it has proved itself to be effective.”
This comic book is part of the Hagley Library’s collection of trade catalogs and pamphlets. You can view it, and other comic books published by the business community, in our Digital Archive by clicking here.
