Dragon Ball GT 53

✨GT Stands For Granddaughter Tugging✨

All right, so Naturon Shenron seemed to be easy pickings in the previous episode, but it turned out that he was just feigning defeat in order to absorb Pan’s body.  The version we saw in Episode 52 was actually an ordinary mole that had been transformed by Naturon’s powers.  Now that he has Pan’s body, he... looks very much like he did before, actually.  I mean, he’s blue, with red claws instead of black, and he has this big frill on his head, and two tails for some reason.   I’m not saying they didn’t change the design for this new form.  My point is that he still looks more like a mole than like Pan.  Like, give him an obnoxious Winnie the Pooh T-shirt or something.

Anyway, the big dilemma here is that Goku has to stop Naturon before he destroys this whole city they’re fighting in, but if he kills Naturon, he’ll kill Pan in the process.  Meanwhile, Naturon can now do stuff like the Kamehameha, because he has all of Pan’s abilities.

For her part, Pan is totally on board with Goku taking the shot.  She’d rather die than be used this way.  When Goku stalls and talks tough, Naturon sees through his bluff, and Pan tells him (somehow?) that he’s got to do whatever it takes. 

So Goku takes the shot, 10x Kamehameha, pointblank range, right in Naturon’s face.  Closed-casket funeral.

Back at their house, Pan’s parents are like “I sure hope Pan’s doing okay.”  Okay, why are they just sitting at home wondering about this?  They can sense energy.  Can’t they tell what’s going on?  Gohan glances back at a photo of Pan and remarks “I half expect that it might be Dad that’s giving Pan all the trouble.”  Like, is he being cute about this?  Can he sense Goku blasting Pan into smithereens at that very moment, and he just doesn’t want to let on in front of his wife?

Not that it matters, because it doesn’t work.  Everyone seems surprised by this, and Naturon speculates that Goku subconsciously held back.  Goku’s like “No way, I put everything I had into that attack,” and Naturon’s like “Well, then how else can I still be alive?”  

Okay, this is some real bullshit here. 

So Goku realizes he can’t win this fight, and he’s too sad about Pan to keep trying.  Naturon is very pleased with himself about this, so he decides to add insult to injury by extruding Pan from his body so Goku can see her one last time. 

And Goku was counting on this to happen?  He was only playing possum so he could grab hold of Pan and yank her back out.  So this is basically the reverse of the last episode, where Naturon faked defeat in order to get Pan.  

Then we see Naturon’s true form, and he looks like Rage Shenron if he were based on a mole instead of a chicken.  Goku just whales on him for a bit and then finishes him off with a plain old vanilla Kamehameha.  The end.

✨"Good" "Ideas", Poorly Executed✨

Okay, so a lot of things don’t add up with this one.

First, in the last episode, Naturon claimed that he was the Seven-Star Dragon Ball itself.  In other words, he has no physical body of his own, and must lure in unsuspecting people and animals to gain physical substance.  So what the hell is this, then?

Second, why does he look like a mole?  I’m not saying he can’t look like a mole, but in the last episode, it was strongly implied that he only looked the way he did because he had taken over a mole’s body.   But then he continued to look like a mole when he got Pan’s body, and he still looks like a mole when he loses Pan. 

Third, if this is what Naturon looks like when he loses his host, then why didn’t we see this form in the last episode?  

Fifth, why does Pan’s body make him more dangerous than he was before?  This is just like when Luud got a power boost from Pan, even though Pan herself doesn’t have much in the way of power.  Yet somehow, when a bad guy uses her power, they can give Goku a hard time.  It’s just kind of hypocritical, how they never let Pan get a win or do anything cool, and they keep her weak so she won’t be able to get in the way of the story, but somehow she’s just strong enough to be a liability.

Sixth, why does Goku need to kill Naturon with his most powerful attack?  Can he not just incapacitate him instead? Naturon joked about his 10x Kamehamaha barely rating 5x.  Well maybe a 3x Kamehameha was just what the doctor ordered.   Something to hurt Naturon without killing Pan.  Which reminds me...

Seventh, this is just the same premise as Luud and Baby, and Super 17 for that matter.  We can’t stop the bad guy without risking the life of a good guy. It’s a decent enough story concept, but we’ve already been here a few times before. 

Eighth, how in the hell does Goku not know how much power he’s putting into his attacks?  If he can’t go through with shooting Pan, then fine, but how does he say that he’s going to do it, charge up the attack, fire it, and then just not hit as hard as he intended?  Unless this was part of Goku’s bluff.  He wanted Naturon to think he had lost his nerve when he actually hadn’t?  But that doesn’t sound like Goku.  I’m not saying Goku wouldn’t go that far, but I don’t think he’s a good enough actor to pull it off.

Ninth, how did Goku know Naturon was going to release Pan long enough for him to pull her out?   I mean, it worked, obviously, but how did he even know Naturon could do that?   The trick made more sense when Naturon did it, because he knew the good guys would want his Dragon Ball, and if he made it seem like he was losing, they would take the Dragon Ball and fall into his trap.   But in this situation, Goku doesn’t have any bait for Naturon to take, and Naturon had no compelling reason to show him Pan one more time. 

✨Positivity Page✨

I will give the writers some credit for making each Dragon the author of his demise.  Haze rope-a-doped Goku and Pan, then mocked them for not finishing him off when they had the chance.  Then he... neglected to finish them off when he had the chance.  Rage made himself so big that he couldn’t be defeated, but he also left himself exposed to the rain, which was probably the reason he kept his electric slime separated in the first place.  But he got too full of himself, and exposed his weakness.  Oceanus had a pretty formidable power, but she used it to pick on seagulls, and terrorized them enough that they knew how to find her weak spot, and were more than willing to point it out to the good guys. 

And here, Naturon has been attacking this city for two episodes straight, which means that when he’s in dire need of a new body, there’s no one around to provide one.  Everyone fled the area a long time ago, so he’s cornered.   Well... he could try to take over Goku’s body, but I assume this wasn’t an option for some reason.

✨Is This Episode Worse than "The Roaming Lake"?✨

You may have noticed how short this entry is, and that’s because the episode is very thin, even by the standard set throughout the rest of GT.

The bulk of this episode is spent on Goku dodging Naturon’s attacks while they each talk about Goku’s dilemma.  The only other character involved is Pan, who makes her position clear throughout.  You can sum it all up in three lines of dialogue, but GT milks it for like ten minutes. 

The problem here is that there’s no suspense to any of this.  Of course Goku’s going to shoot Naturon.  He can’t just let him go.  If nothing else, he needs the Dragon Ball back.  As for Pan, as long as she’s stuck in Naturon’s body, she’s lost to Goku anyway. 

People often criticize Dragon Ball for diminishing the impact of character deaths, because you can just wish all the casualties back to life at the end of every battle.  And that’s a fair point, but in this scenario, the Dragon Balls appear to be off the table.  Maybe Goku could wish Pan back to life later on, but he certainly can’t use the Dragon Balls right now, and using them later may not be an option.  From what the Elder Kai said, it sounds like Goku can’t use any Dragon Balls, anywhere. So if he kills Pan here, she’s dead for good.

Which ought to make this episode more dramatic, but it really doesn’t work, because we know they won’t write Pan out of the story here.  They’ve made the formula too clear by this point.  The supporting cast is completely gone at this stage of the series, so if Goku kills Pan, who’s left?  Is he just going to find the rest of the Shadow Dragons by himself?  Is he going to recruit Bulla or Goten to help him the rest of the way?   No, of course not. 

So when you watch this episode, there’s no doubt in your mind that Goku will find a way to save Pan and defeat Naturon.  Which means it gets really tedious watching the characters agonize over Goku’s choice, when in fact he never actually had one. 

It also hurts the big twist when Goku reveals he was playing possum.  He just laid down and said he was beaten, which is just laying it on way too thick.  We already know he’ll figure something out, so having him just shut down like that is kind of pointless. 

Besides, if all Goku had to do was pull on Pan to get her out, then why didn’t he do that in Episode 52, when she got pulled in to begin with?  The whole thing just comes across as arbitrary and dumb.

You know, what would have been a better ending would be if Goku did decide to attack Naturon, but instead of a Kamehameha, he went for the Spirit Bomb.  Because the Spirit Bomb only hurts malicious opponents, so if Goku throws on at Naturon Shenron, it’ll only hurt him while sparing Pan completely, right? 

And yes, I know Goku use the Spirit Bomb later in this saga, but my point is that Episode 63 sucked, so removing that Spirit Bomb so Goku could use it in a more tactical way in this episode is win-win. 

Anyway, 54-0 for the Roaming Lake.  This is just getting pathetic.

The Shadow Dragons arc is an interesting and cool concept for Dragon Ball, but GT failed to execute properly.

The story and concept is great as a final arc for the overall dragon ball story, but it didn’t take full advantage of what they were given and what it had to offer. Which is why I'm hoping the current manga finds a way to bring back the Shadow Dragons for a second chance like they did with Broly given how often the Dragon Balls have been used in Super.

One problem the original arc had was that it only focused on Goku and Pan fighting the dragons. I think a way to fix this would’ve been if it wasn’t just Goku and Pan but instead everyone got involved from the start. I would’ve loved it if all the characters split up in groups of two or three to find a dragon and defeat it to retrieve a dragon ball.

For example: Gohan and Piccolo (who’s still alive instead of randomly sacrificing himself) could face against Nuova Shenron who is the dragon attached to King Piccolo’s wish for him to return to his youth. This dragon ties into both characters, Nuova symbolizes the sins of Piccolo's father's past while he is also the four star ball, an important relic in Gohan's family. Meanwhile Vegeta (along with Bulma tagging along cause she feels responsible cause of what Old Kai said to her, plus she has the radar) would fight Naturon Shenron who is the dragon attached to the wish to bring back the people Vegeta killed as Majin Vegeta during the Buu Arc. Bulma is the one who made the wish so she's Naturon's "creator" and Vegeta is tied to the wish because of his biggest regret from his past. That would be an interesting confrontation for both characters and a good overall character moment for Vegeta.

-Black Star DB saga is not nearly as dull and boring as people say. The Machine Mutant stuff picks up right away and I honestly thnk the Lord Luud stuff is really cool and freaky in a good way. and then once you get to Planet M2 it really picks up

-Vegeta's characterization in GT is the perfect development for him

-Baby saga should've been a little longer. I wanted more of Goten vs Baby and Gohan vs Baby Goten

-I like the designs of the first 3 dragons. Naturon (the mole dragon) was kinda dumb but his transformation was pretty sick imo

-SSJ4 is the true form of the Super Saiyan from the legend

-Super 17 is a cool concept they just needed more time to explain how tf they made a new 17 and how he linked with the original

The Shadow Dragon Balls

ok for people who haven't watched Dragon Ball GT, i'll give a quick rundown about what i'm talking about.

Dragon Ball GT is an 1996 anime series made by Toei, the people who animated Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dr. Slump. It's a continuation of Z, taking place roughly 20 years or so after the death of Kid Buu.

The final villains of GT are a team of seven beings known as the Shadow Dragons. They were created from overuse of the titular Dragon Balls, and as such, seek to punish humanity for constantly relying on Shenron (of which they are all a part of) to fix their problems for them.

When the Dragon Balls are used, they generate large amounts of positive and negative energy. Depending on the selfless/selfish nature of the wish, one half will be used and the other will be stored inside.

When too much negative energy builds up in the Dragon Balls (such as say. constantly using them to resurrect entire planets of innocent people or erase EVERYONE'S memories of a former monster so he can live a normal life) they turn bluish-violet, crack, and a corrupted Shenron comes out instead and splits into the seven Shadow Dragons without granting a wish.

Each Shadow Dragon is a humanoid, vaguely reptilian being with a dragon ball embedded somewhere in their body, which is their actual self, similar to the Gems from Steven Universe. Each Shadow Dragon also has a specific power that aids them in combat. Some rely on it heavily, whereas some use it to supplement their martial arts techniques. They also each represent a specific wish made in Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z.

The seven Shadow Dragons that appear in Dragon Ball GT:

Naturon Shenron (7) - He can possess people to become stronger. Represents Bulma's wish to revive everyone good who died during the Buu conflict.

Oceanus Shenron (6) - She can shapeshift and control wind. Represents Oolong's wish for panties to prevent Emperor Pilaf from wishing for world domination.

Rage Shenron (5) - He can generate and manipulate electric slime. Represents Roshi's wish to revive Goku to fight Nappa and Vegeta.

Nuvoa Shenron (4) - He can generate fire and survive high temperatures. Represents King Piccolo's wish for eternal youth. He is the only good Shadow Dragon because he was created from a selfish wish.

Eis Shenron (3) - He can generate ice and survive low temperatures. Represents Yamcha's wish to revive the victims of King Piccolo's rampage.

Haze Shenron (2) - He can pollute the area around him, passively weakening everything around him. Represents Upa's wish to resurrect his father, Bora.

Syn Shenron (1) - He can absorb the other six Dragon Balls into his body, obtaining their powers and becoming Omega Shenron, the true form of all seven Shadow Dragons. Represents Kami's wish to revive every single person on Namek killed by the Frieza Force, which was done so that Porunga (who disappeared after Guru died of grief) would return and Dende (who was killed by Frieza) could get him to teleport everyone off the exploding Namek except for Frieza.

Omega Shenron (All) Omega Shenron has the abilities of all seven Shadow Dragons, with Syn as the dominant personality. He is effectively the Eternal Dragon Shenron himself, but as an enemy instead of an ally. He is the final villain of Dragon Ball GT, and the franchise as a whole.
