This is something I’ve talked about on Twitter briefly but I also want to bring it up here because I’m seeing people discuss it (and honestly nitpick a bit) but yes, people think that WBY’s comfort to Jaune is jarring considering what happened in Episode 8. I get why people think that, but I honestly disagree.

WBY understood from the Paper Pleasers that Ascension isn’t actually death, but rebirth. Jaune was the only one out of the four who hadn’t accepted that yet, and it’s through this acceptance that they were able to reach the tree in episode 9. That scene needed to happen. They’re able to display their understanding of Ascension alongside their concern for Ruby. They’re all still worried about her, but they also know that they can’t force Ruby out of the tree (unlike what NeoCat wants to try to do).

People seem to forget that it’s not just RWBY who care about each other, it’s been RWBY and JNPR (+Oscar and Penny and so on) that have all been a group of friends/family. Of course they’re going to look out for everyone, and that includes Jaune. The people who despise his very presence on screen are just ridiculous, I can guarantee you he’s not “stealing” scenes like people always say. They need to get that Jaundice mentality out of their head. It’s just annoying at this point.

You can dislike Jaune, that’s fine. But saying he’s stealing screen time or the story is just plain stupid. Again, his acceptance of Ascension had to happen otherwise WBYJ never would have been brought to the tree. He’s a narrative foil to Ruby, a deuteragonist alongside his team. He’s a part of the story, as much as some people will hate that.

Another thing to add; I’ll say Ruby didn’t quite want to end her life as she simply wanted to be a different person. She says it herself in episode 8 “I don’t want to be me anymore.” That can still be taken as suicidal ideation, but again, Ruby knew like WBY that ascending doesn’t automatically mean death, she was there listening to the Paper Pleasers. Along with that point, in the moment how were WBYJ supposed to know what the tea did? They don’t have our point of view as the audience, they’re characters taking in the beats of a story.

None of RWBYJ fully understand the Ever After, and up until episode 9 (and maybe even 10) they didn’t know the full story compared to the fairytale. Their shock and confusion regarding ascension and what happened to Ruby was completely reasonable, but again they had accepted that it wasn’t death, Jaune just needed to catch up on that idea. He was afraid to, which makes sense considering what he’s been through in the EA.

That’s all I really have to say. I’m still waking up as I make this post so I guess if anyone wants to add anything they can. Please though, if you’re going to reply or add a point keep it civil. There’s really no need to fight or be so aggressive. K thanks bye.
