The Joy of Traveling
Beyond the confines of my host city, I embarked on adventures that spanned the breadth of the continent. From traversing majestic landscapes to unravelling the secrets of historical landmarks, each expedition served as a testament to the boundless possibilities that awaited beyond borders. Traveling around Oslo, Gdańsk, Warsaw, and Kraków, with my Erasmus friends was an unforgettable adventure, filled with laughter, discovery, and a deepening of our bonds. Each city offered its own unique charm and experiences, and sharing these moments with friends made them even more special. Our journey began in Oslo. The natural beauty of Norway’s capital took our breath away. The crisp air and the stunning fjord views were refreshing, and we felt a sense of tranquility.

Next, we traveled to Gdańsk. As we wandered through the picturesque streets of the old town, the colorful facades of the buildings and the scent of the sea air filled us with a sense of wonder. We visited the historic shipyards and learned about the city’s rich maritime history. Exploring the bustling Long Market, we sampled local delicacies and marveled at the intricate architecture of the Neptune Fountain. In the evenings, we gathered at cozy cafes, sharing stories and laughter, feeling a growing sense of camaraderie.

Warsaw was another of our destinations. The contrast between the modern skyscrapers and the historic old town was striking. Walking through the reconstructed streets of the old town, I felt a deep appreciation for the resilience and spirit of the city. We visited the Warsaw Uprising Museum, and the somber stories of bravery moved us deeply. Despite the city’s tragic history, there was a vibrant energy that we all felt, especially when we stumbled upon a lively street festival. Dancing and singing along with the locals, we felt a part of something bigger, a shared joy that transcended language and cultural barriers.

Our final trip was to Krakow, and it quickly became a favorite. The medieval charm of the city, with its cobblestone streets and stunning architecture, was enchanting. Visiting Wawel Castle, we felt like we had stepped back in time. The grandeur of the castle and the beauty of the cathedral left us in awe. In the evenings, we explored the vibrant nightlife of Kazimierz, the Jewish quarter. The eclectic mix of bars and cafes, along with the live music, created an atmosphere of warmth and camaraderie. Sharing pierogi and other traditional dishes, we laughed and talked late into the night, feeling grateful for each other's company.

Our trip to Auschwitz was a sobering experience. The weight of history and the stories of unimaginable suffering were deeply moving, and we supported each other through the emotional visit.

Throughout our travels, the shared experiences brought us closer. We navigated unfamiliar cities, tasted new foods, and learned about different cultures together. The challenges we faced, from getting lost to language barriers, only strengthened our bond. Each city offered its own unique experiences, but the common thread was the joy of discovery and the deepening of our friendships.

Neptune at night guard in front of Town Hall
Tumblr media
During night the contrast and dimensions of the Neptune Fountain, the Town Hall and the main city square of Gdansk gets a certain perspective. A cold spring night is is framed in dark, light, and mystery.
A center of social life day and night since medieval times, this area is worth visit freqently both for the views and the food and drinks. Placed in the crossing of Długi Targ, the "Long Market"/city square, and Ulica Długa, the long lane/street, the Town Hall is the second tallest building in old Gdansk.
The first Town Hall was mentioned back in the late 1200s. But the first building that later was extended again and again was built here in 1336CE. With addition of the statue of king Sigismund the great as part of a taller tower, it reached the current height.
During the European war theater of WWII, this building like the rest of the city was heavily damaged. Reconstructions was done 1946 to 1952.
Today the old Town Hall is part of the City museum. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gda%C5%84sk_Town_Hall
