Rambles on 400 seconds

I had a brainstorm about 5 years ago, about a Pecha-Kucha style (20 x 20 sec slides) talk that I might do: the universe in 400 seconds. I don’t know what compels me to share it now—hm, maybe it’s timely? I don’t know. I just stumbled on it and enjoyed reading it. So here goes...

So, we have just 400 seconds to live.

What did I say, 400 seconds? That's the amount of time given to me on stage, and that's how many seconds I'll give you to think about this. I mean, the universe.

What is it? Why are we in it? Are we in it together, or are we all separated with our own interpretation of what's happening? Or are we suspended in the common understanding, between us all? What's happening, really?

Let's think about this. Less than 360 seconds left, now.

Should we meditate? Should we think about a big problem that we want to solve? Should we thank our parents and love our families? Give credits to our neighbors, our bosses, our presidents? Should we start giving shit away so we feel better, lighter? Should we admit to the fact that we are here, ostensibly "helping people" but really, just taking advantage of the situations and trying to get ahead in our own pursuit of... What? Meaning? Victory? Money, Fortune and Fame? Not that the pursuit of money is particularly promising here, mind. Should we be thinking about what it is that's important to us? What IS important to us? Is it money? Not money. No one will admit to that, and even if it is, to you, it's just a means to the end that you want. What is it?

Let's take a deep breath, and think about it.

Do you have any ideas? Good ones? Bad ones? How many more ideas can you come up with in the next 240 seconds?

Beep. Beep.

Let's think about all these people we are with, tonight. How many are we? Is it enough to build something if we needed to, like a house? Probably.

What should we build, since we are here, together? How will we do it? What meaning will we derive from it? Why would we? Because it's fun? But oh, shit, we don’t have enough time. Let's slow down, a bit. Breath in. Breath out.

I know.

120 seconds now. 2 minutes, after this one.Is this what it feels like if we were in an airplane, and if we were in that scene in the movies where the pilot will unexpectedly announce the End? That "everything is going to be okay" but you know that it ain't? 100 seconds to go. And we are supposed to find some meaning to the time passing. The life thus far. But.  What if we just stopped? What if we could stop time, and meditate on things, a bit? What if we can press this pause button? Take a look at the person next to you, right now. Look at each other. Take in the fact that we are here. Together. Do you see?Can we expand on that? Can we create a moment that lasts and lasts, in the next ten seconds? The end.
