The Brain's Learning System: A Natural Process of Growth
Tumblr media
What if we thought about our brain not just as a static organ, but as a dynamic learning system—one that gradually develops and refines itself through experience and practice? The beauty is that this system is always ready to grow. It just needs the right conditions and consistent engagement.
Understanding Neural Growth
Think back to your last "aha!" moment—that instant where everything just clicked. That wasn't just a random occurrence—it was your brain forming new neural pathways, strengthening connections through a process neuroscientists call synaptic plasticity. This biological process is your brain's way of adapting to new challenges and learning.
Three Pathways to Cognitive Development
Growing your cognitive capabilities isn't about grinding harder; it's about upgrading smarter. Here are three evidence-based approaches to trigger your next system update:
Progressive Challenge Gradually expose yourself to increasingly complex material in your areas of interest. Read papers slightly above your current understanding. Engage in discussions that stretch your thinking. Your brain builds new connections most effectively when working at the edge of your current capabilities.
Cross-Domain Learning Research shows that learning across different domains enhances cognitive flexibility. Whether it's combining music with mathematics, or art with programming, each new skill you develop creates neural networks that can strengthen your primary areas of expertise. Choose activities that interest you and commit to steady progress.
Structured Stress and Recovery Moderate challenge, followed by adequate rest and reflection, creates optimal conditions for learning. Take on projects that push your boundaries, but remember to build in time for processing and integration. This rhythm of engagement and recovery allows for sustainable growth.
Observable Changes
Here’s what happens when your system updates:
Sharper Intuition: Decision-making becomes faster and more accurate. You just "know."
Enhanced Pattern Recognition: You see patterns and connections across different domains that others might miss.
Increased Creative Connections: Ideas flow like a well-oiled machine, linking seemingly unrelated concepts.
Greater Metacognitive Awareness: You gain clarity about how you think and learn, which enhances your growth potential.
The Continuous Nature of Growth
Learning isn't about passing discrete tests or reaching fixed levels—it's an ongoing journey of small improvements. Each challenge you tackle builds upon previous learning, creating an increasingly rich foundation for future growth. There’s no endpoint; there’s always room for refinement and development.
Your Learning Journey
Consider this: What small step could you take today toward expanding your understanding? Perhaps it's spending 30 minutes with a challenging book, starting a new creative project, or engaging with someone whose expertise differs from yours.
Remember that cognitive development is gradual and cumulative. The key isn't dramatic transformation but consistent, intentional engagement with learning opportunities. Your brain's capacity for growth is remarkable—it just needs your patient, persistent participation in the process.
What matters most isn't reaching some predefined level of achievement, but maintaining curiosity and commitment to gradual improvement. The journey of learning itself becomes the reward.

If you’re talking about rape in fiction and criticizing it from the perspective of this is wrong to write because it’s wrong in real life your missing something
Things being depicted in fiction can both condemn and advocate for the real thing depending on how its depicted
Given neuralplasticity and how the unconscious mind deals with fiction its easy to internalize certain ideas and ways of thinking about people through how you think about those you see in fiction
(this is the part of how the human brain reacts to fiction that propaganda takes advantage of to convince one group of people to stop thinking of other groups of people as people)this is more dangerous when you remember how many people are lurning sex ed from porn most of wich don’t depict consent

Mind Maps and Cognitive Decline
Tumblr media
The Concept Behind Mind Maps Mind maps, a concept developed by Tony Buzan in the 1970s, are visual tools used to organize information in a hierarchical manner, showcasing the relationships between various ideas or pieces of information. The core idea is positioned centrally, with branches extending outwards to represent critical concepts, which can be further subdivided into smaller sub-concepts. This non-linear structure promotes a more flexible and creative approach to organizing and retrieving information.
Cognitive Science Behind Mind Maps Mind maps leverage several principles of cognitive psychology, including dual coding theory, network models of memory, and spatial memory utilization. Dual coding theory, introduced by Allan Paivio in 1971, posits that information is stored in memory in both verbal and visual forms.
Mind maps take advantage of this by combining text with images and spatial arrangements, thereby enhancing recall and comprehension (Paivio, 1971). The hierarchical nature of mind maps also mirrors the network models of memory, where knowledge is stored in interconnected nodes. Gordon Bower (1970) suggests that the more connections a piece of information has, the easier it becomes to retrieve. Mind maps facilitate the creation of these connections by visually depicting relationships between concepts (Bower, 1970).
Tumblr media
Mind Maps and Cognitive Decline Research indicates that engaging in cognitively stimulating activities, such as creating mind maps, can slow cognitive decline, particularly among older adults. These activities promote neural plasticity and cognitive reserve, which are essential in maintaining cognitive function as one ages. Key References - Bower, G. H. (1970). self-care sunday⁣ ⁣ ⁣ this morning started with the idea to share how i do my self-care on a Sunday. After I uploaded the firs story, I felt that it was counterproductive. so I deleted the story and declared a story-break. ⁣ ⁣ self-care can look different for each and one of us, there is no one size fits all and that’s okay. each one needs to find what fits them. ⁣ ⁣ So what did I do today?⁣ ⁣ Morning Ritual still consisting sun salutation before dropping into my heart in meditation with a cup of hot water and lemon to give the body a flush. I’ve also added subconscious re-programming to the party.⁣ ⁣ A good session of cardio to get heart pumping and the good juices flowing. You know that post-workout high feeling? That’s chemicals in your brain doing the Cha-cha! ⁣ ⁣ Sliding into a more conscious way of eating as i want to take responsibility of what I am feeding my vessel, instead of mindless consuming, so I had a play based meal.⁣ ⁣ Popped by a yoga studio for some yin-yoga, which I think my be my favorite type of yoga now. The connection of the body, mind and emotions is so fascinating to me, I walked out the class reborn. ⁣ ⁣ Communion, had the loveliest fika with two likeminded souls. Just being able to pour yourself out in a conversation, share and grow together is a gift. ⁣ ⁣ My heart is full of love. I feel aligned, focused and inspired. Note
Lots of people are complaining that Nott hasn't had enough life experience to have been able to know to say to Caleb what she did say and I was just wondering what the psych major meta writer thought about that.
To start with, here’s what Nott said to Caleb after his reveal:
“I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry. It wasn’t you. It’s not your fault. It wasn’t you. You were made to do it. It’s not your fault. I know you don’t realize that now, but you will. This pain that you have, that you wear all over you like a mask… it’s just that. And you can take it off some day. I know it hurts, but it wasn’t your fault. And I’m just gonna keep telling you that until you believe me.[…]What you did was awful. Truly terrible, despicable, and unforgivable… until you can forgive it. At some point you’ll have to do that, and I swear to you that I will be at your side until you do.”
I think there are three big things to talk about here.
The first is that we’re dealing with a fantasy race that has a much more accelerated lifespan than humans. That means that all of the growth process are likely going to be accelerated as well, including neurological development.
Our ability to understand and process complex emotions and situations, our emotional intelligence, etc. do develop in part because of the things we experience, but they also develop because of the actual neurological development of the brain. Those two things work hand in hand to develop the way we process and handle this sorts of emotional things.
There are multiple parts of the brain that take part in our emotional processes and our emotional intelligence, and the neurological development of those areas is going to have an impact on how maturely and intelligently a person is able to take in and handle emotions and emotional experiences. Different parts of the brain need to be able to interact in order for us to not just feel what the right reaction should be, but also how to put it into action. And different parts of the brain control our emotional responses and our ability to recognize and be conscious of those emotional responses. Brains undergo actual physical development, so how well these parts of the brain work does have to do with where they’re at in their physical development.
So if we’re dealing with a fantasy race that has an accelerated lifespan, and therefor accelerated biological development, there’s also going to be accelerated neurological development. So the neurological development of a 6-9 year old goblin would likely be closer to a 17-20 something year old human than it would be to a 6-9 year old human.
While the brain continues maturing well into the 20s and even sometimes beyond, it develops from back to front, so most of the areas that control and process emotions develop sort of early on to the middle of the process. The things that older teenagers and people going into their 20s usually have a harder time with are things like decision making, considering consequences, and impulse control, because the parts of the brain that mature last are the parts that control those things. So a goblin in the 6-9 age range would, at the very least, have reached the point in their neurological development where the emotion centers of the brain have matured.
That’s not to say that our experiences do not have any impact on the development of our emotional maturity and intelligence. It absolutely does. Adolescent neural development is largely experience dependent, especially in very specific windows. The way this mostly works in post-childhood development is that connections are either strengthened or eliminated rather than newly created, as most of the neural networks and connections were already made during our earlier years. So those connections are there, and our experiences either strengthen those connections, or the are eliminated.
Now, the brain during these years has incredibly neuralplasticity, so it take a lot less input to impact brain development. So the possibility that, when dealing with a fantasy race that has an accelerated lifespan and development, and therefor and accelerated neurological development, would be impacted more by individual experiences when it comes to their neural development, especially during adolescent and young adult years, than a race with more typical human life span.
This brings us into the second thing… we know very little about Nott’s background and the things she’s actually experienced. It can be surmised from what we do know about her, such as her problem drinking, being on her own when she comes from a race that generally lives in groups, and her clear dislike of her kind, that she’s been through some stuff that would definitely be difficult emotionally, which would impact the way her brain develops.
So those are the two big things. While she’s only had 6-9 years of life experience, we don’t know exactly what she’s experienced in those years, just that at least some of it was pretty bad, and because she’s a goblin, a race that has an accelerated lifespan, it’s reasonable to think that it’s possible that those experiences would have more of an impact on her development than they would on someone with a more “normal” life span.
Now for the third thing… even with all of that, I’m not so sure that what she actually said to Caleb was THAT deep. They may have been words of comfort that were appropriate for the situation and for the person to whom she was talking, and she might not have necessarily been wrong, but despite the wording she used for some of it, I don’t know that I’d say any of it was particularly profound, and I don’t think a lot of it really demonstrates particularly complex thinking about these things.
To start with, she assures him that none of it is his fault, that someone made him do it, which isn’t particularly nuanced thinking because things like Caleb’s situation are far more complex than that and they certainly aren’t black and white in that way. Later on she does say that it was a horrible thing that he did, but that’s still not necessarily giving him any of the responsibility, and goes on to basically say that it’s a forgivable thing as long as he can forgive himself, which isn’t a particularly mature way to view culpability. There are far more complexities to that sort of thing that revolve around people outside of ourselves who are effected, as well as completely external things like cultural morality and other larger impacts of such things, and self-focus when it comes to things we’ve done is a rather immature emotional perspective.
What seems to be the deepest thing she says is about how his pain is a mask that he will one day take off, but while it’s said in a flowery metaphor, this isn’t particularly profound either. It’s basically saying that he thinks that this horrible thing and this pain is the defining thing about him, but that one day he’ll be able to forgive himself and he’ll stop defining himself by those things. It’s absolutely correct, but it’s also not something that takes the highest amount of emotional intelligence or the most complex thinking to say.
Again, that’s not to say that any of what she said to him was necessarily wrong. While there’s more complexity to all of it, the things she says are absolutely valuable to this kind of experience, and right in a lot of ways. It’s just not the incredibly deep, profound, complex thing that some people are making it out to be. She said some of it in some flowery metaphor, but she has a high intelligence, so that’s not so out of bounds for her to be able to do that.
So, all of that combined - the accelerated development of goblins, the fact that we don’t know everything that Nott has experienced, and the fact that the things she said weren’t that complex in their thinking and reasoning - leads me to say that the idea that she shouldn’t have been able to have the emotional intelligence or maturity or whatever to say all of that is pretty silly.

Somatic Psychotherapy in Campbell, CA
Tumblr media
“Long-lasting responses to trauma result not simply from the experience of fear and helplessness but from how our bodies interpret those experiences.” ~Rachel Yehuda
Talking about trauma doesn’t make it go away.
Tumblr media
If you have been told that, you were sold a bill of goods.
Focusing solely on the story of how the trauma happened can actually be dangerous. You can re-trigger the trauma, flooding yourself with intense, overwhelming emotions. Even your biology can change — if you keep re-living the story, you will strengthen the neural circuits for the trauma, cementing the trauma experience in yourself. That is the opposite of what you want.
Research shows that strong emotions, old patterns and trauma are held in the body. That means that to heal these old wounds you need to access body memories. Somatic therapy (soma means “of the body”) uses talk therapy, body awareness and mindfulness to access deep emotional pain to provide lasting relief from the pain.
Somatic psychotherapy is grounded in neuroscience, how the body stores memories, and how to release the pain of those memories.
Experiencing emotions in the body is a universal experience. A study done in 2013 shows that no matter where you come from geographically, the felt sense of emotions is the same. “More than 700 participants in Finland, Sweden and Taiwan participated in experiments aimed at mapping their bodily sensations in connection with specific emotions.”
Emotions can trigger body sensations, and body sensations can also trigger emotions, creating a feedback loop. With somatic psychotherapy, we can access painful emotions through body sensation and interrupt that feedback loop, creating lasting change.
Sensorimotor Psychotherapy
Sensorimotor psychotherapy has been developed and refined over the last 40 years by Pat Ogden, founder of the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute and co-founder of the Hakomi Institute. Sensorimotor Psychotherapy blends traditional talk therapy with a mind-body approach to effectively treat childhood trauma, neglect and abandonment that often lead to PTSD and complex PTSD.
“Sensorimotor Psychotherapy blends theory and technique from cognitive and dynamic therapy with straightforward somatic awareness and movement interventions… that promote empowerment and competency.” ~Dr. Dan Siegel, award-winning educator, researcher and author
