A summary of the Chinese AI situation, for the uninitiated.

These are scores on different tests that are designed to see how accurate a Large Language Model is in different areas of knowledge. As you know, OpenAI is partners with Microsoft, so these are the scores for ChatGPT and Copilot. DeepSeek is the Chinese model that got released a week ago. The rest are open source models, which means everyone is free to use them as they please, including the average Tumblr user. You can run them from the servers of the companies that made them for a subscription, or you can download them to install locally on your own computer. However, the computer requirements so far are so high that only a few people currently have the machines at home required to run it.
Yes, this is why AI uses so much electricity. As with any technology, the early models are highly inefficient. Think how a Ford T needed a long chimney to get rid of a ton of black smoke, which was unused petrol. Over the next hundred years combustion engines have become much more efficient, but they still waste a lot of energy, which is why we need to move towards renewable electricity and sustainable battery technology. But that's a topic for another day.
As you can see from the scores, are around the same accuracy. These tests are in constant evolution as well: as soon as they start becoming obsolete, new ones are released to adjust for a more complicated benchmark. The new models are trained using different machine learning techniques, and in theory, the goal is to make them faster and more efficient so they can operate with less power, much like modern cars use way less energy and produce far less pollution than the Ford T.
However, computing power requirements kept scaling up, so you're either tied to the subscription or forced to pay for a latest gen PC, which is why NVIDIA, AMD, Intel and all the other chip companies were investing hard on much more powerful GPUs and NPUs. For now all we need to know about those is that they're expensive, use a lot of electricity, and are required to operate the bots at superhuman speed (literally, all those clickbait posts about how AI was secretly 150 Indian men in a trenchcoat were nonsense).
Because the chip companies have been working hard on making big, bulky, powerful chips with massive fans that are up to the task, their stock value was skyrocketing, and because of that, everyone started to use AI as a marketing trend. See, marketing people are not smart, and they don't understand computers. Furthermore, marketing people think you're stupid, and because of their biased frame of reference, they think you're two snores short of brain-dead. The entire point of their existence is to turn tall tales into capital. So they don't know or care about what AI is or what it's useful for. They just saw Number Go Up for the AI companies and decided "AI is a magic cow we can milk forever". Sometimes it's not even AI, they just use old software and rebrand it, much like convection ovens became air fryers.
Well, now we're up to date. So what did DepSeek release that did a 9/11 on NVIDIA stock prices and popped the AI bubble?

Oh, I would not want to be an OpenAI investor right now either. A token is basically one Unicode character (it's more complicated than that but you can google that on your own time). That cost means you could input the entire works of Stephen King for under a dollar. Yes, including electricity costs. DeepSeek has jumped from a Ford T to a Subaru in terms of pollution and water use.

What this is telling all those people who just sold their high-end gaming rig to be able to afford a machine that can run the latest ChatGPT locally, is that the person who bought it from them can run something basically just as powerful on their old one.
Which means that all those GPUs and NPUs that are being made, and all those deals Microsoft signed to have control of the AI market, have just lost a lot of their pulling power.
Well, I mean, the ChatGPT subscription is 20 bucks a month, surely the Chinese are charging a fortune for-

Oh. So it's free for everyone and you can use it or modify it however you want, no subscription, no unpayable electric bill, no handing Microsoft all of your private data, you can just run it on a relatively inexpensive PC. You could probably even run it on a phone in a couple years.

Just a little update. Currently 6 weeks into classes and going strong. Got high marks in both thus far. Finished one paper and got a stellar review, now onto two more projects and then I'm in the clear for a while. One of my professors made me aware of a part-time teaching opportunity at the university available after I get my degree in the spring of next year, so that was very flattering and exciting!
After two long weeks of hives, they're on their way out and should be finished by the end of this week, but somehow in the mix of everything, I think the antihistamine cream I was putting on my eyelids caused one to crack like hell and is now ~infected~ *jazz hands*. I'm putting triple antibiotic on it when Ginger isn't around since Ginger is very allergic to it for some reason. Also employing the eye patch, which I haven't had to do for a while, in order to ensure that the eye still works and focuses and doesn't rely too much on the normal, healthy eye at this point (because of course the one that is also infect is my lazy eye that I have to work extra hard to keep healthy anyway.)
Also, there's been some... there's been a bit of a kerfuffle at my one work place. Due to recent political upheaval and the ever-pervasive gen AI in my field and other fields, I haven't...received any work from them in about two months. I'm not the only one either. Many of us are just sitting and waiting. We're not sure what's going on. Our contracts are all still active and we're all still on the payroll, but there's nothing quite so disheartening as getting an email from the bookkeeping software saying, 'you've been paid,' and it's... just 0. Thankfully my other job is still going and will continue to go strong until June, and I've been able to pull extra hours.

All that to say, it will be fine. I'll make it fine. Just holy fucking shit can things stop happening.
To end on a high-note- you all have been so very kind in helping me cover 17% of the cost of this semester of classes! That's tremendous! I deeply, truly appreciate your help, and have been keeping it in mind as I plunge back into my academics so as to keep my spirits high and my work ethic strong <3

Thoughts On Gen AI Art
I want to put my thoughts on the subject down in words, and this seems as good a place as any
I hate that society and capitalism have forced me to be anti AI Art! Ten years ago, this was literally my biggest dream! There is a *very* close alternate timeline where my career is fully enmeshed in generative ai (as opposed to only sort of enmeshed)! Like, I cannot emphasize enough that I was basically a coin flip away from going back and getting my graduate degree *in AI* (instead I decided I liked having money, and kept working as a software dev)
Also! It is so so so frustrating how many of the complaints and scare tactics around Gen AI are ultimately bogus. Mostly - plagiarism and the environmental impact are both wildly misconstrued... Most folks do not understand the Sheer Amount of data that these LLMs are trained on.... It is an amount of input which is essentially incomprehensible. The actual impact any individual piece of art has on the model is so minute as to be meaningless; and frankly, it icks me out to be on the side of 'strict copyright good actually'???? Like, one of the consequences of putting your work out publicly is that people can use it - there is definitely a good discussion to be had around if models are trained on media that is supposed to be behind a paywall, and if so how we either prevent that or make them pay to use it, but the way the discussion is currently framed is *actively dangerous* because it is in *direct opposition* to fair use. (This is a complex subject! I know! But there is a big difference between 'this is cruel/immoral/tacky' vs 'this should be illegal'! If it becomes a legal issue you MUST consider the WORST consequences as well as the intended ones! Laws generally, and US laws specifically are *not* historically good at differentiating between actual human individuals and corporations or abstract technological entities! And 'actually it should be harder to appeal as fair use' is NOT the right side to be on!!!!)
And the economic impact.... Guys please don't believe pop sci articles, shits always more complicated then that
But anyway, I think that right now there is no way to justify the use of generative ai for the creation of static media. That is so clearly taking jobs out of the hands of actual living humans - even the argument that you would never have actually paid someone to do XYZ is a bit suspect along basically the same lines as making fan content for jk Rowling - like.... Sure, that may be true, but now you definitely won't, and also you are tacitly endorsing this use. (Similarly to making fan content for jkr, I consider this to be tacky but not actually A Sin)
HOWEVER -- I think I am pro AI Art for things that you literally could not possibly get a human to do.
The main use case I have in mind is video games. Either more traditional viddya games, or things like endless choose your own adventure novels**.... Also new kinds of musical instruments --- imagine a synth that changes itself as you play it? There is some really really cool stuff just over the horizon in these sorts of directions - and there is no person they are replacing, no one *could* do those things. Harm still has to be considered on a case by case basis, it should go without saying, but like. At that point the argument really becomes 'this piece of art shouldn't exist because it's taking resources away from this other piece of art' - which is to say, fundementally a bad argument. There is no ethical consumption etc etc
**there is an argument that this is tt:RPGs but guys... It really isn't. Like, I love DnD as much as the next millennial nerd, but there really is a fundementally different urge met by a Group Role Play activity and a Single Person Visual Novel, or RPG video game .... Like, people play DnD with their friends and then go home and load up Baldur's Gate - these are different activities. The 'anytime anywhere completely private AI story book writer' is a role that *could not possibly* be filled by a human
AND all of this is sort of eliding over the fact that like, using AI good is a skill! AI output sucks! It is genuinely hard to get AI to consistently produce useful output! I think that will become more and more apparent as time goes by and the shine wears off - a lot of uses for AI will become ubiquitous and common place, and improve as that occurs, but a lot will just go away because it is fundementally easier to work collaboratively with a human being then to use generative ai.
I Do estimate that in like... 15-30 years there will be some Andy Warhol type artist who uses AI in some fancy and challenging way, fundementally altering the social landscape around AI Art... But like, we'll see.

Ai Error!: Bug in the System!
So, fun fact, this is what an Ai produces when there's been a callback error in the Python script!
You see... I tend to tinker with the UI-Config.json, config.json, and CSS files while I wait for gens to finish, or when I'm running a track through a mastering script. Just kinda perfecting the software for my use case.
And eeeeevery once-in-while, I'll change something that the Ai flips out over.
Like that one time I set Face Restoration visibility to "False", instead of "false". Took me AGES to track it back to an accidental Auto-caps.

Mech Construction Showcase: Nine-Ball
Greetings, Dan here!
Armored Core is one of the primary inspirations behind Beneath Twisted Earth. I played it back during Gen 1, and would occasionally return to replay it to get that same feeling. When YouTuber, Josh Strife Hayes did a longform video revisiting Armored Core 1 for the PS1 last year, it sparked the inspiration that would become BTE. From the megacorp-ruled, war-torn dystopia, to the mission-downtime story progression for pilots AC is in BTE's DNA. That is not to discount the influences from other properties (Battletech, Front Mission, Gundam, Nausica, etc), just that it provided the initial spark to this project. So when the announcement for AC6 came out over the summer I was very excited. I'll be picking up my copy this Friday to keep the mech juices flowing through the final development steps. To commemorate the occasion, this Mech Construction Showcase will be showing off the main antagonist from Gen 1, (26 year old spoiler warning), Nine-Ball.
For those not familiar, Nine-Ball is a high end AC constructed by the AI that runs all of what remains of the human world. This AI played all factions against each other, and Nine-Ball was its avatar amongst them, using it to pose as the mercenary pilot, Hustler One. When the time came Nine-Ball, directly piloted by the AI as an assault unit against key targets that threatened its primary programming (maintaining human population and advancement through endless war). Because of this, Nine-Ball comes equipped with the same equipment that other pilots might come across, but the build has been optimized for speed and frequency of attacks.

Nine-Ball is designed with a medium amount of armor so as not to sacrifice speed, to reflect this, we will equip it with an Anodyne Frame, giving it 36 AP. The Boosters will likewise come from Anodyne, giving it a Movement Rating of 3. In order to reflect its high end optimization from skill and attacks, we will install a Sakura CPU, giving Nine-Ball four Utilities, and a Sakura Radiator to provide a Heat Rating of 14.
For the four Utilities, we will go with the AI Assistant to give Nine-Ball a one stat/skill reroll per round; an Aerial Frame allowing for flight capabilities; a Sensor Suite to allow it to scan the field in a variety of ways; and a Neural Interface granting a +5 to Mech Piloting. While the names for a couple of these utilities may imply a biological component or another AI involved, we will consider these both expressions of Hustler One's full capabilities as an AI itself.
As for Weapon Systems, Nine-Ball is known for carrying missile launchers, a laser blade, a pulse rifle, and grenade launchers. While we could have used the 14 HR to build four weapons, we will instead create two weapons, and simulate the remaining weapons through mods and disposables allowing for stronger weapons. For this build, Nine-Ball's primary weapon will be it's Pulse Rifle, with a Weapon Skill of 60, and 9 HR. We will set the damage for this weapon at the relatively low d6 dmg for two heat, while we will increase the Rate of Fire to 2 for two heat. We will also give the Rate of Fire an optimization to raise it up to a total of 3 attacks per round. For ammunition, we'll spend four heat to give the rifle 12 Ammo. Then for Range we will make it effective at Medium range. Since Nine-Ball is high end, we will fill all three mod slots. The first, to reflect Nine-Balls usual grenade launcher loadout, we'll attach a grenade launcher mod to the pulse rifle. This will be limited to three shots, but should be enough to approximate. Next we'll install a Targeting AI that will add +5 to the associated Weapon Skill, again accounting for Hustler One's processing capabilities. Finally, we shall install Incendiary Ammo increasing damage dealt by +2.
Next, for targets that are up close, the Laser Blade. Now the version that Nine-Ball uses is equivalent to what starting pilots equip, so we will only spend one heat, giving it d4 in damage. With a Weapons Skill of 49, even if this is a low amount of damage any hit would deal a minimum of 5 dmg. Nine-Ball is known for attacking quickly in melee, so while we will only spend one heat on the Rate of Fire, giving it 1, we will optimize this feature to raise it to 2 attacks in a round. We will spend two heat to have 6 Ammo, and one heat to give the blade Melee range. For mods, we will install the Targeting AI and Incendiary ammo again.
Even though Nine-Ball's RoF is high across both of its weapons, we let the ammo be relatively low, meaning the AC has 3-4 rounds of consecutive attacks depending on the weapon before running out. Fortunately, any consecutive hits will stack damage on targets quickly thanks to high Weapon Skills. Still in order to compensate for any battles that it can't finish quickly, we will equip an Ammo Hopper for a refill on the Pulse Rifle. Then to account for Nine-Ball's normal load out of missiles, we will equip two disposable missile decks which will cover medium through far ranges.Â
While Nine-Ball does have some gaps in its effective ranges, Close, Sniping, and Artillery, its MR of 3 will allow it to close any gaps with its opponents quickly. Ultimately, just like the boss of Armored Core Gen 1, this build would present a challenge for most opponents. Of course there were multiple ways this mech could have been built in the system to reflect the desired feel. This is just how I decided to go about it. It was a fun, slightly more in-depth build to help get ready for AC6's release on Friday. Next time though, I'd like to make a "mid tier" mech as well as visit another of BTE's core inspiration franchises. While we could go real robot, I think I'll use this chance to instead, build something more akin to a super robot. Next time, let's build the Shining Gundam from Mobile Fighter G Gundam.
