One man’s ‘I can’t let people know I listen to this artist it’s so cringe’ is another man’s top artist on Spotify Wrapped.

Where is love
Does it fall from skies above?
Is it underneath
The willow tree

Why do people want popular artists to be obscure so bad- like as someone who listens to a mix of popular and more niche artists, it literally sucks when a musician you like has a small (or even nonexistent) fanbase. Some don’t put out merch or even CDs because music isn’t their full time job. They either don’t do live shows, or do nothing BUT live shows for extended periods of time- the latter is kind of sad sometimes. One of my favorite songs is one I heard at an Endless Mike show, and it still hasn’t come out a year later. There aren’t any recordings of it online, either, because his fanbase is so small.
Some of these artists literally can’t feed themselves either. Like it’s actually awful. Stop being mad your favorite artist is popular and be grateful they can make so much content for you. Especially when it comes to bands like My Chemical Romance, where the artists in question grew up poor- be happy their successful!

Spotify picked out new music for me. The first song bodes well! That's highly specific and I'm impressed.

Been going through the discography of this Estonian folk/jazz band from the 70s.
Using youtube to find music can be good sometimes.

"where do you find all your music? I have no idea where to find niche stuff" - people who have been in my car/occasional streams as i listen to shit 20 other people in the world have heard
My secret is Walnut bob, dismiss yourself, yuri 2356 and other music archiving and reuploading youtube channels. They have the good shit and if i ever am not satisfied, bandcamp and soundcloud are perfect for browsing all the shit.
I also recommend listening to more compilations and mixes people post on youtube. Use the youtube mixes feature too. Im not even joking I've gotten some really fascinating music from them.
Music and record stores also are great for this, if you dont have one near you, go to a good will and see if they have a CD/cassette/vinyl/other music storage medium section, plus its cheap so you can buy a bunch of them if you want.
Also get a cd player or small digital music player. I don't have recommendations for those unfortunately because i still need one myself, but you could probably get a pretty solid answer if you asked someone who works at a music store.
Here's some shit i found !
^^(this is one that helped kickstart how i engage with and look for music to this day, all the way back in 2018 baby, i was 14 whole years old)
